Courtney Roper was nominated by a colleague who wishes to remain anonymous.
As parent liaison and member of the leadership team at Crosspointe Elementary, Mrs. Roper has a proven ability to make a difference in the lives of her students. She is a critical player in the effort to generate greater and more positive connections between parents, teachers and staff. "Mrs. Sunshine," as she is affectionately called, continues to promote a positive atmosphere at school, and encourages students to learn and grow.
Mrs. Roper’s position has been in place for several years to help facilitate parents' involvement in the education of their children. She has an excellent performance record in her school and district. She provides a nurturing atmosphere on all levels and adheres to high moral and ethical standards on a daily basis.
Some of Mrs. Roper’s liaison's duties include home visits, staffing parent centers, distributing NCLB information, administering surveys, informing parents, providing training, and supplying information. Mrs. Roper also distributes community resource lists containing agencies that can help find housing and employment. She continues to spend countless hours making sure the communication between her school and the surrounding community is at its highest level.
Mrs. Roper helps immigrant families decipher a new culture of schooling—one that may involve fundamentally different approaches to learning than those to which they are accustomed to. If families don't understand complex school issues, administrative procedures, teacher expectations, or their own potential as advocates, their children may not receive the access to educational opportunities that they deserve. Mrs. Roper helps parents understand this connection and never gives up on them.
She works with the guidance department to help support the parents and teach them how to support their children as students. Mrs. Roper takes her responsibility seriously and never questions the countless hours she puts in to make the students and families feel welcome. She provides information to parents about her school's procedures, instructional programs, and the roles of administrators and staff members.
If parents request help in completing specific forms for school registration, Mrs. Roper conducts meetings at school or in their homes. She provides information to parents about the resources available to them throughout the school system and community. Mrs. Roper also contacts parents to serve on school committees and attend special events at the school. She serves as a contact person for parents and maintains confidentiality when carrying out responsibilities. She is always participating or helping with the School Improvement Committee and school renewal efforts.
According to the nominator, Mrs. Roper considers herself to be in the greatest profession in the world. She serves as a mentor and a guide for students and parents to pursue their dreams.
"Without Mrs. Roper and her continued spread of sunshine, students and families would not be able to thrive," the nominator said. "She is a LifeChanger in our community due to her positive attitude, excellent communication skills and dedication to her students."
I have worked beside Courtney as a parent volunteer while our kids were in marching band. She treated every student as if they were her own child. She brought a ray of light into every room she entered. She always welcomed people with a smile and open arms. She is an amazing person who is the definition of selfless, caring, sincere and dedicated. She truly loves very child she crosses paths with and they love her back. Go Courtney! You deserve this!

#LifechangeroftheYear should be the hashtag for Mrs. Roper! Her "job" at Crosspointe is just the beginning of what she does for other people. I worked beside her for a solid year and watched in amazement at the level of commitment and hours of service put in for others in the community on a daily basis.
At school, she is indeed the Parent/Community Liason. With the help of a prestigious grant, she opened a resource center within the school where parents and children alike could come and get materials and support. She had the vision and brought it to life. It is a room where she tirelessly works but is also child friendly...murals on the walls, the best of literature on the shelves, and hands on resources for parents to come and use. She's implemented the AVID program which is dedicated to closing the achievement gap by preparing all students for college and other postsecondary opportunities. Parents are taught how to partner with teachers to support their child's learning. This is critical in a school such as Crosspointe because the majority of parents speak English as a second language if at all. They do not know how the American educational system is set up or what questions to ask in regards to student expectations. She is the "gap filler", which has been remarkable to witness. Parents feel welcome and are encouraged to be a part of the process due to Mrs. Roper's leadership.
Through the partnering with many groups and individuals in the community, she has made certain that every child has what he/she needs in order to be successful in the classroom and home as well! These items do not magically show up. It's hours upon hours of hard work beyond the walls of the school that make these things happen. When the majority of school employees are leaving school at the end of their workday, many times she's just beginning. She might be making a home visit where parents can feel more comfortable sharing concerns. There may be a meeting set up with a community agency to find out what types of support can be provided for families and students whether it be to meet physical or emotional needs of all involved. Food may need to be brought in, decorations created, and set up prep for faculty meetings, parent workshops, county presentations, and student celebrations. Her thumbprint is very evident in the climate of the school; you can witness this as you walk through the school and see the work of the students on the common walls. Quite frankly, it's the things others don't think about and don't want to do that she does. The hours spend behind the scenes are what makes everything work so well during the course of the year! These are the things very few witness.
There are many other community partnerships that Mrs. Roper impacts. While they are things she does outside of the PBCS job, they do intertwine. She is a committed volunteer at the Boynton Beach Soup Kitchen. At holiday time, while others are at home with their families, she's helping to prepare and serving food. There is a plate of warm food there and hug for more than a handful of students and families that see her on a daily basis at school. This is especially critical because it has provided some stability to struggling families which in turn allowed them to stay in that area and keep their children enrolled in the same school. She's had personnel fundraisers which benefit the Soup Kitchen and her passion for all less fortunate is visible through her actions.
When a local high school student wanted to create a non-profit to help homeless students, Mrs. Roper was right there offering possible options and connections in the community as possible supporters. She was the one to identify students in need and was there so the process of support could be put into place. She helped to support someone else's vision and outreach and to make dreams come true. Once again, she volunteered countless hours to support that program, Abbie's Angels, which has grown to impact not only homeless students at Crosspointe Elementary but many students throughout the county.
Many times throughout the year, she sets up opportunities for local police officers to interact with students. Officers partner with students in the "Shop with a Cop" program during the holidays. They walk through the halls of the school periodically just to help students become more comfortable with their presence. Law enforcement programs are put into place for teaching safety and creating awareness about many subjects that are real threats (stranger danger, what to do if you find a weapon). All of these things help break down barriers and allow for cultural understandings to be broadened.
Mrs. Roper is a leader and participant in making the world a better place. She is all about kindness and creating a world where every child has a chance to succeed! She's the model of a LIFECHANGER!
I’ve known Courtney for over 5 years as a colleague at Crosspointe, but more importantly, as my friend. Her nickname “Sunshine”
is totally appropriate, as even in tough or stressful situations, she NEVER loses her optimism or her smile. She gives her whole heart and soul to the benefit of both the children and the staff at Crosspointe Elementary. But beyond the workplace, she also gives of her time to benefit others in our community. She volunteers at the local Soup Kitchen as often as possible, and has recruited many others to also give of their time to help. She has received the heart of volunteerism from her parents, also active volunteers, and has passed this precious spirit to her teenage son, who also donates his time both at the Soup Kitchen and to benefit the children of Crosspointe. So she’s paying it forward generationally!! Additionally, Courtney is extremely involved as a band parent for her son’s high school, Park Vista. She not only chaperones for their trips to competitions, but also helps to coordinate fundraising efforts for their trips to performances. With all this extra activity, she also finds time to give in other ways around the community such as Race for the Cure and other community fundraisers without personal recognition. She also spends personal time with friends to listen and share with one another. I know this, because I’m blessed to have a caring friend like Courtney Roper. She is so deserving of the recipient of a life changer award.
Courtney is most definitely a ray of sunshine to everyone she meets. She tirelessly supports and fundraises for many causes that are near and dear to her heart to include Komen Race for the Cure and JDRF One walk. After working or on her days off she can be seen volunteering in the Soup Kitchen as well as volunteering at her son's High School. Courtney lives by the mantra, "kindness matters" and definitely leads by example.
Courtney touches the lives of all that know her. She is a bright ray of sunshine and always has a positive attitude that spreads to others. I have known her for many years and she is continuously happy, generous and always lends a hand to make other people's lives better. She is very dedicated to her students, family and friends. No one deserves this honor more than Courtney!
I have got to know Courtney through her volunteering at Park Vista for the marching band. She is tirelessly helping our kids at many events and actively assisting wherever needed. We are all truly thankful to have her with us at Park Vista and I am sure she is a tremendous help at Crosspointe. It is wonderful to see dedicated parents recognized for their efforts and I applaud Courtney for her dedication to both programs, she is truly an inspiring LifeChanger.

Mrs. Roper is a ray of sunshine. Everyday she is changing lives for the better. She always has a kind word and a smile. The children love her and she constantly provides for their needs. The first time I met Courtney I was so surprised that she welcomed me as a volunteer with open arms and made me a part of the school.I am a retired teacher and asked if I could assist teachers in need of help.Courtney immediately replied and supplied me with the names of teachers in need of assistance.I was very appreciative of her prompt response since I just moved to the area.I fully support the comments provided by the nominating person who covered all the grounds in support of Courtney's deserving of the Life Changer of the year award.

Ms. Courtney, I met you through a speaking engagement at crosspoint Elementary school, I was sharing my story of how AVID and mentor like you helped shape the person that I am today. For a short moment, I saw something in you--- PASSION. You had that hope in your face, it was obvious that you love what you are doing.
We then follow each other on social media, the love and dedication for what you do is all over your page. You deserve this and then some. Even after I went off to college, I thought you guys forgot about my visit. Little did I know, out of nowhere with your help and some students, I received a care package with goodies and words of encouragements. "Random act of kindness" the message on top of a protein bar. I can't thank you for your patient especially with students who really need the extra support. I am so happy for you.

I do not work with Courtney at Crosspointe Elementary School, but everyone that knows Courtney will agree that she is a caring and generous person. She is always involved in helping our community, and making sure everyone around her is okay. Courtney's famous quote is "kindness matters" and she lives by these words. She is so sweet, and I am lucky to have crossed paths with her and have her in my life.
Yes Courtney is a life changer in many ways! Not only does she stand in the hallway each morning to greet the students with a Good morning, she checks in with any student who is looking sad or upset. She takes time to make sure they are okay gives them a hug, changing a sad face to a smile and helping the children start the day knowing someone cares about them. All of her amazing work at Crosspointe is not the only reason Courtney is a life changer. During school holidays and summer vacation, she serves at the local soup kitchen and encourages others to join her. But wait there is more! She serves as the President of the local high school Band Parents group. She organizes fund raises and chaperones the band on their many competitions to ensure the high school students are able to participate and more often then not win the competitions. Courtney helps everyone from students to teens to the homeless and poor families in our community. Courtney does all this with a smile and love in her heart. She exemplifies being kind and never expecting anything in return!

I have only been a staff member at Crosspointe Elementary School for 4 months.
