Jemel Floyd was nominated by Leah Berzon, a member of the community.
As the Building and Grounds Supervisor for LAUSD’s Grand View Boulevard Elementary School, Mr. Floyd's Monday through Saturday, 6am-2:30pm schedule doesn’t exactly offer ample leisure time. Additionally, he is a single father of three young girls, and a tiny, yet mighty turtle named Killa. Apparently, Killa is the most demanding of his children, especially when it comes to turtle food.
"The day I met Jemel Floyd I knew there was something special about this strikingly calm and present man, but I had no idea just how special I would know him to be," Berzon said. "Around campus, Jemel is known and adored by teachers, students, and staff alike. In fact, he is hailed as 'J. Flo,' which to me, makes perfect sense. The very moment you meet him, you undoubtedly know he 'flows' to his own unique rhythm, a rhythm infused with heart, kindness, and a whole lot of soul."
Once he completes his day’s work, Mr. Floyd travels to George Washington Preparatory High School, located in South Central Los Angeles, where he volunteers his time as a coach for the boys’ and girls’ volleyball teams, as well as the girls’ basketball team. He does this Monday through Saturday from 3:30pm-5:30pm throughout the entire school year, and has been diligently doing so for the past seven years.
Many students in South Central LA have encountered gang violence, homicide, and severe poverty, including at George Washington High. This is, in part, what inspired Mr. Floyd to volunteer his time as a coach. He knows that athletics provides a healthy and safe outlet for these teens, which helps them avoid falling victim to drugs and gang violence.
"Tragically, over the past several years, students have lost their lives to gang altercations," Berzon said. "Now, more than ever, after-school programs, activities, and athletics are urgently needed to support these students in achieving happy and fulfilling lives."
And yet, the generous outpouring of Jemel’s time, energy, and compassion doesn’t stop there. On the weekends, he volunteers with a male youth group dedicated to ending violence. Once again, he acts as a coach by offering guidance on how to negotiate altercations without the use of guns. This type of work is certainly not for the faint-hearted, but Mr. Floyd's calm, powerful mentorship proves to be a healing tonic to many teens and young adults. He offers them light even amidst the darkest of situations.
"While there are many do-gooders in this world, I have yet to meet someone as caring, dedicated, competent, and driven to make a difference as Jemel," Berzon said. "He not only demonstrates professional excellence and fatherhood, but also redefines the meaning of altruism. And what strikes me the most is he does ALL of this without any need or want of recognition – he has no agenda except to follow his heart."
When Ms. Berzon asked Mr. Floyd what he would use the prize money for if he were to receive a LifeChanger of the Year award, his answer was simple and direct – it would be used to purchase the athletic equipment his teams desperately need (and deserve).
This is the J. Flo way of life. While his teams aren’t always ranked as #1, every player has already won. These teens have utilized Mr. Floyd's coaching and leadership to rise above their challenging, disheartening, and sometimes dangerous life situations and truly participate in life.
"My hope is that we all strive to live our own lives enriched with the compassion, dedication, and heart-centered leadership J. Flo demonstrates every single day," Berzon said. "I know he’s got my vote."

I am a supervisor at Mar Vista Medical Therapy Unit which is located on the Grandview school premises. Jemel (Jay) has always been available to me and my staff whenever we had a technical problem or an issue related to the building and even outside of our. Uilding where there was a raised cement which could cause falls and injuries. Jay is very approachable and does what is in his power to get things done/fixed for us. I have observed his interaction with the school and California Children Services' staff , patients and fsmilies. He is very polite and patient and alwsys tries to help them. He has a redpectful and yet friendly attitude toward people and if something can be done- will be done by him as soon as it is possible. He will be a great candidate for the life changer of the year. Mr Floyd has 48 hours a day to do all he does for our community. Not only is he respectful but he also teaches our elementary school students to show respect for others. He is a guardian angel both spiritually am physically. And then after school he gives he remaining time to teaching life skills through basketball and volleyball. Countless children are empowered by this man.

Mr. floyd not only is one of only two janitors for our huge school, but he also protects the kids and staff if anything looks even slightly suspicious. Coach Floyd, one of the most genuine hardworking individuals I've ever come across. Transferring in my junior year of high school It was instantly noticeable how many of the students gravitated to coach Floyd, making sure every student felt secured and comfortable. I think Jemel would be a great recipient for the Life Changer of The Year award as his character and good will has paved many ways for thousands of students.
While I live on the other side of the country, my daughter, who nominated Jemel for this award, spoke so highly about Jemel and the work he does with his teams. I raised my daughter in the suburbs of CT and I can't imagine some of the senseless violence these kids are exposed to at such a young age. Athletics is a wonderful way to keep kids focused and healthy (both mentally and physically,) and I commend Jemel for his tireless efforts. It takes a special kind of person to spend the kind of time, energy and effort he does coaching and mentoring these kids. So bravo to Jemel and may this award go to him and his teams!

Jemel is my older brother. I live in Las Vegas. I'm 27 years old and ask him for a lot of advice. He is always calm level headed and always makes times to talk to me. We didn't grow up together but him being my brother he takes pride in it and always always guides me in the right direction. That's the most love you can show someone and I'm thankful to have him. I have known Jemel since his high school days at Leuzinger . I was a Teacher there as well as the head basketball coach. Jemel was an outstanding student and basketball player. The skill level and enthusiasm of the athletic teams he has coached this year has increase exponentially. The students appreciate that they have someone that cares about them and dedicates their time to help them grow in their academics and beyond. Mr. J, as my students and I call him, is a great custodian. No matter how stressful a day might be having, he always manages to make me laugh. Before adult hood Jemel was highly influential to his peers. It was apparent many years ago in the court yard of Leuzinger high school that J-Flo was a born leader. Always poise and calm, his demeanor was and is a display of self confidence and self control. People are naturally attracted to these qualities. Loyal, honest and driven, Jay would put a plan together and see it through every time. Always looking out for his folks. I witnessed Jay care for friends in times of need when those friends didn't even care for themselves. I'm proud of the fact that Jemel uses his energy positively because I personally know he had plenty of experiences that he could've used as excuses to take a darker path. 27 years later it's great to hear that one of the REALIST amongst us is being recognized for his contributions regardless of the outcome. Mr.Floyd is a very humble fun loving guy, who goes over and above for his students and those he comes in contact with, Since meeting him over 2 years ago he has been nothing but a mannerable gentleman offering his services to anyone he comes in contact with, all while wearing the biggest brightest smile( clear sign of genuineness) He deserves this award and many more like it, for his services dedication and compassion for the youth and young adults of today...??????

JayFlo is a man of compassion, humility and quiet strength. He is known to stand for truth even if it is not the most popular stance among friends, colleagues and family. No one deserves this award more than Mr Jemel Floyd.
So blessed to know this young man. He has been nothing but a perfect gentleman since I met him many years ago at a Washington Prep mixer. He has always showing nothing but total admiration for his natural children and the ones he mentors through sports. He even is affectionally known as step Dad by my fatherless children. His commitment to excellence and community involvement is rare in this day and age. I strongly recommend that he be granted this award along with all the rights and privilege that go along with it.
In his line of work, Jay always carries himself with the utmost professionalism and takes the time to listen to others. He takes pride in helping others and on being dependable. A trustworthy individual.

I've known this gentleman for a while and has always showed passion in everything he does. I've seen him coach the kids to preform to the best of their abilities, Floyd is always encouraging the kids and providing them with life experience talks. Jemel Floyd is an amazing person. I had the pleasure of working with him at my school and I can say that I witnessed his caring spirit and willingness to help others. He mentored my son and helped him to see the importance of education. Now my son is doing well in college! Jemel is definitely a life changer!

Mr Floyd has done a great job in the community by helping being a mentor and Father figure not only to his personal kids but other kids as well and has been a great example of what giving back to his community is. I have come to know Jemel after only 2 short years of my child attending Grand View Boulevard Elementary. I realized immediately he is very diligent and hardworking and is often commended by teachers and parents alike!
