The growth and development I've seen in band members can be linked to Mr. Cannady's teaching."

Every day, when students face mundane busy work or academic tasks, Mr. Cannady is an inspiration. He deviates from conventional teaching methods and empowers students to "learn how to drive." Rather than relying on mere memorization, except for scales, he encourages the band to delve deeper into music, nurturing a thoughtful and musically inclined mindset. While there is always a technique to follow when playing an instrument, Mr. Cannady steers the band to tap in and feel the music.

"I may have a long way to go regarding music, but my band director, Mr. Cannady, makes me want to keep playing. He always reminds me to push myself for the band. That is what Mr. Cannady encapsulates. Teamwork and dedication. He has changed my life and provided me with a sense of passion in my day-to-day life," stated a student.

Through his guidance, he has steered numerous bands toward achievements they once deemed unattainable. His excellence extends across all levels, garnering high recognition from individuals in various domains, including high school, college, and even the professional sphere.

Despite his remarkable accomplishments, Mr. Cannady remains nurturing, cultivating a supportive community for his students to grow within. He exudes kindness and refuses to tolerate rudeness, promptly addressing any instances of disrespect. Embracing an "old school" approach, Mr. Cannady instills respect and holds students accountable for their actions—students who enter his room in a negative or disrespectful state leave with transformed attitudes. By fostering solid lines of communication, he ensures that he remains aware of any challenges or difficulties his students may face. He embraces the role of a "band dad," safeguarding his students and actively preventing any harm that may come their way.

Above all, Mr. Cannady prioritizes his students' sense of safety and well-being, striving to create an environment where they can thrive both within his band and throughout the campus of THS.

Mr. Cannady has been a teacher, a mentor, and an inspiration. As an educator he saw our goals as his goals. During my time under his direction I was keen on improving my tone as a saxophonist. His feedback was encouraging but honest, and made me continue to strive for better. Today when asked how I developed my sound I tell them about Mr. Cannady and his large emphasis on building a strong concept of sound. As a mentor he has helped me navigate college auditions, helped me keep my head up when my mom was recovering from a stroke and continues to encourage me and my future endeavors music or not music. During freshman year of college he drove over an hour to come listen and support my college marching band. Even after graduating Mr. Cannady wants nothing more than to see our success. I was recently selected as a saxophone section leader for marching band and during my interview I found myself speaking from a bank of skills and music concepts instilled in me from Mr. Cannady. As a music education Major I reflect on the ways that Mr. Cannady taught us and the things he valued and know I want to continue them in my own band room some day. Under his direction I never had a day when I felt he wasn’t excited be standing in front of us on the podium and ready to teach us. The passion he holds for music is truly an inspiration. Thanks for all you have done and continue to do for us and this art form. -Nic

He was the best of himself. He taught my four sons music. In a different light. My son Larry Jr. just passed away. Mr. Cannedy gave them their brother back. Through the love of music. Lil Larry played in the band. The year's later his brothers Samuel, Solomon, CJ, and Cameron joined the band. Mr. Cannedy taught them to be the best of themselves through the love of music
