Rasaan Powell was nominated by her colleague, Henry Jones.
Powerful, instrumental, and inspiring. These three words were used to describe Ms. Powell. Her impact on the student body of Smilow Prep began with her rise to being the interim principal. She embodies the core values of creating joy, pursuing growth, and becoming better together. Students respect and cherish her for holding them accountable, celebrating academic and behavioral progress, and, lastly, being someone they can receive motherly advice from.
"I have had many great interactions with Ms. Powell these past two years," said Jones. "From receiving coaching for classroom culture, positive relationships, and restorative practices with students and peers. My favorite moment involves having a heart-to-heart moment with her when I felt I wasn't impacting my students academically. Ms. Powell quickly expelled that negative thinking by showing me how much my kids' testing scores had grown. She also told me how much the students enjoy having me in their classes because I make reading fun."
Why is Ms. Powell a LifeChanger? Ms. Powell's impact on the students and teachers goes beyond any titles. Her genuine love for Black kids, men, and women comes truly from a place of love. She's constantly pouring into others and does this not for recognition and fame but because she always wants what's best for others. Even through adversity and those who try to derail her progress, she has been a beacon of positivity and professionalism.

Ms. Powell is a true compassionate leader. Not only does she show up ready to serve students but also the staff on her team. She leads with honesty and integrity. She works diligently behind the scenes to make sure the school and staff needs are met. Her expertise is respected and is needed for the climate and culture of the school. I’m grateful to have worked with a leader as such. Her greatness and energy that she brings is unmatched. Ms. Powell is a leader that continues to serve and lead in excellence.
Rasaan Powell is an awesome and amazing person, coach and principal. She has set the bar at Smilow Prep and others are following her lead. As educators we get extremely tired this time of year, but Rasaan brings 100% to work everyday.
Rasaan is not only a life changer, but an excellent leader, listener and lovable person. Some people say they listen to teachers, but her actions prove that she does everyday. Some people think they are great leaders, but Rasaan shows it on a daily basis. She showers the staff, students and parents with love and kindness that can’t be matched.
My words can’t express how dynamic of a person she really is, but I truly hope you get the opportunity to see her in action.
An innate leader, Ms. Powell uses collaboration with team building to reach the desired academic goals and achievement. Serving as principal can be a challenging experience and Ms. Powell meets those challenges head on. I give her my complete recommendation for this prestigious honor.
Rasaan is not only a life-changer, but she is a life-savior. She is a Down South Superhero. I’ve seen her put out fires between raging adults. I’ve seen her step into children’s lives and transform them. The out-pouring of love that she shared with Patricia, Bubba, and Punchanella brings tears to my eyes. She was and is the Angel that introduced those children to God. Those things I saw with my own eyes. Powell is like one of the secret angels. Always in the right places at the right time. She doesn’t mind putting others before her because she knows that you don’t have to dim one light in order to shine bright. I dealt with something very personal and could have crushed anyone, but through guidance and wisdom spoken from Mrs. Powell…I have walked into my future. A born LEADER!! When I’m around Rasaan Powell this the presence I’m in. A person who leads by serving. I’ve never witnessed her asking someone to do something she wouldn’t do or hasn’t already done. She has earned the trust and respect of those around her because they know that she will support her people in doing what’s right. Powell was one of my first managers when I stepped on the education scene several years ago. The way she was able to balance a true love for the students while maintaining professionalism and balancing her authority, was and still is inspiring. Powell gains respect and admiration by the way she serves, casts vision, and shows up daily giving her all. Her presence is both commanding and calming. Working with her shaped how I show up as a leader, and I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this honor. Give her the flowers now!

Rasaan Powell is a great leader because she doesn’t do for the accolades or acknowledgement. She does what she does to make a difference in scholars lives. There isn’t a role she hasn’t played in smillow prep and she does it with love. She is what and educator should strive to be. Simply an incredible leader and mentor and friend.
I nominate Ms.Powell. Ms Powell loves helping young people and goes above and beyond to help todays youth strive for excellence. Over the 20 plus years I’ve known Ms Powell she has always helped others and loves education.She is a strong leader and able to get anyone to follow her leadership because she leads by example. She works from when her feet hits the floor in the morning and I’m sure she dreams about how she can help her school to move forward to excellence at night.
I’ve had the honor of knowing Mrs. Powell for most my life, and in my opinion she is the Best administrator I’ve ever had the opportunities to work with. She goes above and beyond with everything she does, she doesn’t believe in mediocre. I agree with everything Mr. Jones stated above. This is my first year teaching/coaching at Smilow Prep. As well, this is my first year coming in contact with the positive energy Ms. Powell has! She more than a boss, she’s a leader, motivator, and a great listener. Not only has Ms. Powell pushed me to my full potential, she’s encouraged me to keep striving for excellence, keep wanting to be better and do more. I first met Ms. Powell 13 years ago as colleagues & I have watched as she took on different roles & moved up in companies. Everything she gets is deserved because she works hard at each role she has been assigned. She is a great friend, person, and colleague.

She is one of the best principals in the world. She stepped up after the former principal resigned and really turned Smilie Prep around. It’s a school where students and staff wants to be. Rasaan has several job titles at Smilow Prep and she exceeds everyone expectations. She goes an extra mile for her staff and students.

Rasaan!!!! I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this award! From the moment you interviewed at Smilow I knew that I had the opportunity to grow exponentially as a professional. I not only grew as a Dean of Students from working with you, I also grew in my confidence in that it is ok to lead with your heart, passion and love for people.
