Music that Describes Kate
Kate Melvin was nominated by a friend, Sarah Thompson.
Ms. Melvin is a LifeChanger in her professional and personal life. She is dedicated to her students and always goes above and beyond to meet their needs. Her school is a Title I school that serves rural, economically disadvantaged students. These students face financial and familial hardships. Knowing this, Ms. Melvin works extremely hard to meet their social, emotional, and physical needs.
A few examples of how Ms. Melvin is a LifeChanger as a teacher is her ability to see and fill a need. Recently, a student came in with shoes that no longer had a sole. That evening, Ms. Melvin bought him a new pair of Nikes to ensure he was never embarrassed about his shoes again. Another way that Ms. Melvin serves her students is by inviting them to eat lunch with her, not as a punishment but as an opportunity for them to talk and make connections.
Ms. Melvin understands that the role of a teacher is more than distributing content; teachers must serve as mentors, providers, and guardians to the students who often do not receive the support they need at home. Last year, Atkinson Elementary School was shaken when one of its students was fatally injured in an accident. This student had been in Ms. Melvin's class during his fourth-grade year and again last year. After this tragedy, Ms. Melvin was instrumental in supporting this student's family and friends while dealing with her own heartbreak, as she loves every student like they are her own.
"Kate is more than a teacher," said Thompson. "She works hard every day to connect with all of the students in the school so that each of them knows they are loved and supported."
