William Clay was nominated by his colleague, Alicia Green.
"Three words that I would use to describe Dr. William Clay would be fearless, dedicated, and caring," said Green. "This LifeChanger has dedicated his career and life to working with at-risk students, especially young men of color. He has done what most people are afraid to do. He put his caring, concern, and love for his students into action."
Dr. Clay has created a safe environment for his students to heal and thrive. His work with his students in the classroom lets them know that they have a voice, and that he is there to listen and help them learn how to problem-solve. Dr. Clay also goes above and beyond to reach all of his students. His patience in listening to every one of them is remarkable—no issue or problem is too small or significant for him to help a student solve.
"One of the most emotional interactions I have had with Dr. Clay was during one of our quarterly counselors' meetings," said Green. "I remember him being very compassionate and transparent. He shared that after several interactions with one of his students, it was discovered that one of their parents may have abused this individual. He stood by his student and supported them throughout the process...He advocated for his student, even to the point of appearing in court. Once the authorities could complete the investigation, the findings were consistent with the information presented by the student. He stood firm on his conviction despite his fear of possibly losing everything he had worked so hard for. Only a few people would have done this. Yes, not all heroes wear capes. Sometimes they wear the hat of a Professional School Counselor."
