Paige Smith was nominated by her colleague, Ryan DeVries, who submitted the nomination on behalf of her assistant principal, Missy Shipp.
"Paige Smith is the best English teacher I have ever seen," said Shipp. "I marvel at her instruction and ability to push large numbers of students to reach higher than they have ever reached. She uses Google and other technologies to create a true 21st-century classroom allowing students opportunities to create their own learning. Since last year, her enrollment in Dual Enrollment English 101 and 102 has more than quadrupled. Paige can challenge the bright, yet underperforming students at the highest levels. She does not just teach the 'smart kids.' She willingly looks for students with potential and works diligently to challenge them."
The best word to describe Ms. Smith is "pride." Because of her extensive pride in her students and her ability to reach them, Ms. Smith is willing to stop at nothing for her Seniors. She teaches English 101/102 and Journalism I/II, and she's the staunchest ally for students as they stumble toward the finish line. Ms. Smith is fearless about contacting parents and working with them to inoculate Seniors from Senioritis. She is detailed in her efforts to engage parents and ensure all stakeholders are helping every Senior make it.
She takes pride in holding high standards. She is fearless about making students work hard until the end of the year. She does not let up and let them coast. It takes an extraordinary amount of tireless work to keep pushing teens that are done being pushed. At the same time she is pushing, however, she has the uncanny knack for showing mercy and advocating for "that" student that needs the benefit of the doubt.
"Counselors and others get a lot of credit for our graduation rate, but Paige should take a large amount of pride in that number because her dogged efforts are a large part of that success," said Shipp. "For these reasons and more, Paige deserves to win the LifeChanger of the Year Award."
To say that Mrs. Smith has changed my life would be an understatement. When I first entered high school, I had no clue where I wanted my future to lead me. I took Mrs. Smith’s journalism class as an elective and immediately fell in love with it. I am now a reporter for Southern Utah University News, an opportunity rarely granted to freshman students, but thanks to the countless hours Mrs. Smith spent working with me and teaching me, I was able to receive the position on high school journalism experience alone. Mrs. Smith is a personable teacher that takes the time to get to know every one of her students. If a student seems more down than usual, Mrs. Smith notices. If a student goes above and beyond their usual standard, Mrs. Smith notices. She makes sure all students feel seen and heard. She also gives students the perfect amount of freedom they need to explore on their own and get hands-on experience with her guidance. Mrs. Smith taught me more about the real world than anybody I’ve ever met. When I succeed or fail in life, I turn to Mrs. Smith for advice or encouragement even now. Mrs. Smith leaves impacts that last far beyond high school. I attribute my love for the craft of writing to her, and I don’t believe there’s such thing as a better mentor, teacher, and friend than Mrs. Smith.
While school is sometimes boring and something I dread, knowing I have Journalism with Mrs.Smith is something that excites and motivates me. When I joined Journalism last year, I was completely blind but Mrs.Smith was a major help along the way. Throughout the last two years, I've grown closer to Mrs.Smith and only gained more love and respect for her. She's so passionate about The Lariat that it inspires everyone around her. She has definitely made a huge impact on my life and I'm certain shes impacted others too. My years as her student are ones I won't forget. She is definitely the Lifechanger of the year!
Mrs. Smith has been my teacher for the past two years, and in many ways has become more than a teacher and is now a really close friend. She constantly motivates me to do my absolute best and I always feel like she has my back. Every time I walk into her classroom I feel like i'm at home and all the stress from my other classes is gone. But she has not just helped me, every student that walks into her room is affected in a positive way. I can say with full confidence that every single one of her students loves her. I had never felt comfortable in a classroom until I walked in for the first time. The fact that she can deal with me everyday is special on its own, I constantly am obnoxious and try my best not to do my work. But she finds a way to put me on task and help me complete my work. So in many ways Mrs. Smith has changed my life and I will always be grateful that I got to be her student.
To put it simply, Paige Smith is indefatigable. Her energy, efforts, and ideas literally help every program at our school succeed!
Mrs. Smith is by far the best english teacher I have ever had throughout my educational career. While she teaches about english, she also teaches about life. I had Mrs. Smith my senior year of high school and I can say with 100% certainty she made my transition from high school to college much easier than most students’ transitions. She is kind-hearted and cares about her students more than she cares about the grades, which makes the students want to learn even more resulting in high grades anyways. She absolutely deserves this award because it fits her perfectly!

I am so proud to say Paige Smith is not only a great friend but an amazing colleague. She fosters a love of learning in students and encourages them to be their best. She spends countless hours ensuring her classes are not only invested in learning but provide the necessary feedback for students to continue growing in her content area. Paige is not only a role model for her students, but she also has many colleagues looking to her for guidance and advice to help them grow in their relationships with their students. I am so thankful that our students get to experience how great a teacher she is.
Mrs. Smith is an amazing teacher. She is one of the hardest working teachers I have ever known. The improvement her students show in writing through the year is phenomenal. This only happens because of the grading and feedback that she gives her students. The amount of time and energy required to do this for over 250 students shows extraordinary dedication. She does this while also putting out the school newspaper, The Lariat. The Lariat is a professional quality newspaper that keeps our school community informed and connected. On top of all this, she selflessly helps out other staff members. Our dual credit program would not be thriving without Mrs. Smith. I've always thought that if I would want my own child to have a teacher then that is a good teacher. Not only do I want my child to have Mrs. Smith I would be disappointed if he did not have Mrs. Smith. Mrs. Smith is a vital part of our school community.
Mrs. Smith is a top tier teacher and human. She does everything she can to make her students successful, both in the classroom and out of it. She ties lessons to the "real world," and teaches them the skills they need for graduation and beyond. She makes her students feel educated, safe, and loved. She frames everything she does with humor, so her students are hooked and remain interested in whatever she is teaching. She spends countless hours, even in her "off" time, putting together high interest effective lessons for all of her classes.
Paige Smith has been at Shadow Ridge since it has opened, that is when I met her. She is one of the sweetest people that I have met. I hear only good things about her from the students. She is involved in our school and loves it and the students that attend there. She is an amazing person.
Having worked with Mrs. Smith and watched as she mentored and taught my 2 older boys, I am grateful for her patience with her students, example of hard work, firm in her expectations, and kind in her smile. Both of my boys returned to her for a letter of recommendation as well as advise for their future. She genuinely cares about her students and those she works with. She was my son's 2nd biggest cheerleader when he did great things but wasn't afraid to call him out when he was slacking. For some reason her call out was harder than moms! She truly cares about people, and it is a pleasure to know and work with her.
Ms. Smith was my English teacher back in 2015. She is caring, compassionate, and loves what she does. As she guides you to the next steps on your life, she gives advise that fits every situation. She is one of my most memorable teachers, and deserves the recognition for not only for helping me succeed, but the rest of my classmates as well.
As a colleague, Paige has been a life saver. With her support and encouragement my teaching only improves. We have collaborated and bounced ideas off one another in an attempt to do right by our students. We have created a beautiful vertical alignment where her class build upon the little that students remember from my class. She helped me adjust to a new school, as well as adjust to having my own children in campus. Without her, I would be utterly alone, blindly feeling my way through the day. Ultimately, Paige knows how to build the best relationships with her students, and that is something that I am still striving to achieve.

I have had the honor and privilege of being Paige Smith’s student teacher for the past two semesters! She is incredibly dedicated and passionate in what she teaches and the way she plans her lessons! She has taught me everything I know about classroom management and how be a positive influence in all students lives! Every student that has come across Mrs. Smith’s classroom will tell you that they have learned more in her class than previous years or have been thoroughly felt prepared for after high school! She is always friendly and a positive light in her students lives and those who are honored enough to call her a friend! She has been such a role model for me and past student teachers! Paige Smith is an active member of our school staff. She has revived the school newspaper and has switched it to becoming a completely digital platform that has been widely accepted by our student. She has been a stable part of Shadow Ridge for many years and this school is a better place because she is here.
I was previously one of Mrs. Smith's previous students. Mrs. Smith not only shaped me into the student that I was able to be but also the person that I am today. Mrs. Smith has inspired me to do more than I ever thought that I could. With her help I was able to obtain a job working for the state as an Investigator in the Welfare Division. I still reach out to Mrs. Smith and am thankful to have her as a strong role model in my life. Mrs. Smith is incredibly dedicated to her students and always made her classroom a safe place to learn and be treated as a person. I cannot think of anyone who deserves this award more than Mrs. Smith as she is such an amazing influence on today's students, former students and even colleagues.
Very excited to hear about this well deserved nomination!! I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Smith my sophomore year of high school in my journalism class. From the moment I walked into that classroom I could feel Mrs. Smith's positive energy radiate. When I first took journalism I thought it was going to be an "easy 'A'" class. I soon realized I would be pushed to my limits. I continued on with journalism my junior year and grew a bigger bond with Mrs. Smith. She helped mold my writing into what it is today. I also had the pleasure of having Mrs. Smith my senior year as her TA and English student. I was able to see her every single day and loved every moment of it. We shared laughs, tears, joy and everything in between. Every day I looked forward to seeing Mrs. Smith and can see how much she influenced every student that walked past her. You didn't have to have Mrs. Smith as your teacher to know her door was open to everyone. She always kept the classroom lighthearted and overall a mystery on what crazy thing Mrs. Smith was going to say or do. I remember reading Hamlet in her class and the ghost of Hamlet's father was mentioned. She stood on a few desks to turn on the "ghost" she created. She flipped a switch and this object with a little white cape started "flying" around the class. I remember seeing everyone laughing at how above and beyond she was going to symbolize this ghost from Hamlet. She always had a way of keeping students, especially her senior students, engaged in every activity; even if that was vocab tests with funny videos that went along with the vocab. I owe a lot of my success to Mrs. Smith and her teaching tactics. I recently graduated with a B.A. in journalism and communications, I now work for one of the biggest casino corporations in Las Vegas and work with their social media and marketing team. Without the outpouring love and support from Mrs. Smith I don't think I would've found the career path I am on. So thank you again Mrs. Smith!! I couldn't think of a better nominee for this award, congratulations!!
Paige Smith is an amazing teacher and an amazing mentor to young adults. She taught my son Kale but, more importantly, she helped foster a love of learning and writing. Her journalism class has followed him to his major in college and become the occupation he desires most. Every student deserves a teacher who cares the way she does and I will forever be grateful to her.
I was very lucky that I met and been taught by Mrs. Smith during my high school career. As someone who just got here in the country and barely know anything, Mrs. Smith pushed gave me a boost of confidence to go out there and see what the world looks like that no matter what I do in life, I know that she’s by my side supporting me. When I was struggling to look for any scholarships, she sent me a lot of scholarship opportunities, and for that change my path. With people like Mrs. Smith that I know will always be at my back supporting me, I am here writing this comment telling her that I am progressing both in my work and school career and knowing that she deserves this award. I was an exchange student in Las Vegas, and I had the opportunity to be one of Mrs. Smith journalism’s student. She not only encouraged me in a way a teacher has never done before, but she also made me love her lessons thanks to her empathy and passion.
I have never found before in a teacher the qualities that she has, with which she helped me growing as a student and as a human being. I am so very grateful that I got the chance to have been her student, and she truly deserves this nomination. Thank you Mrs. Smith!
Ms. Smith is an exceptional teacher, colleague, and mentor. She motivates even the most reluctant learners through her steadfast support and engaging lessons. She is an expert at crafting positive relationships with her students and truly is their teacher for life. Not too many teachers have been invited (and attended) as many weddings, celebrations, and life events as Ms. Smith has for students she taught years ago.
Ms. Smith has an uncanny ability to understand what each student needs academically. She is a genius at finding just the right book for the right student at the right time. She pushes students to see beyond their present circumstances and to dream bigger. She fights for them to keep going and is their consistent champion. Ms. Smith uses literature and nonfiction texts as a vehicle to explore the world. There is never a dull moment or one without a life lesson in her classroom.
Few educators are as innovative and engaging as Ms. Smith. She freely shares her ideas with other teachers and is as supportive of them as she is her own students. Ms. Smith somehow creates consistency and structure while simultaneously enduring her lessons with rigor and enthusiasm. I am a better teacher thanks to my time working with Ms. Smith. Her positive influence even extends past her classrooms walls. She definitely deserves the formal title of Life Changer, because she has already influenced, improved, and changed so many lives.
Mrs. Smith taught me principles and inspired me beyond just the English lessons and journalism practices she displayed in her classroom. She teaches students to be resilient, diligent, and to achieve things bigger than yourself. She is incredible approachable and always willing to assist her students. I am grateful to have had her for a teacher every year of my high school education, and her class and teaching style has influenced my career aspirations as well as I pursue a profession in communications and journalism. As one of Mrs. Smith's former pupils, I can attest to the fact that Mrs. Smith was an incredible, dedicated educator. She took her role as a teacher at Shadow Ridge seriously, and her passion for teaching and mentoring high school students shone through every day. I took Journalism 1 and 2, and it was an honor to write for/edit the Lariat, with her at the helm. Looking back, I realize now the impact that my time as a Lariat writer had on my preparedness for college/workforce and improving my literacy, and I owe it all to Mrs. Smith's guidance and leadership.
I was also a TA for her senior-level English class, and I witnessed first-hand her love for literature, teaching, and mentoring high school seniors. She has this incredible knack for making learning fun, and it was mesmerizing to observe! Teachers like Mrs. Smith are a dime-a-dozen, and I am grateful that our paths crossed.
Mrs. Smith, myself, my sisters (who were also her students), and my mother are still in constant contact, after ~10 years of my first day in Journalism 1, which is a testament to the impact she had on my family's time at Shadow Ridge High School. My life has changed in a lot of ways since I was a teenager in her classroom, but Mrs. Smith has remained a constant. No matter what happens, she will always be my journalism teacher!
I was very fortunate to have been a student of Mrs. Smith almost a decade ago yet, her influence will stick with me forever. Not only was her witty humor something to marvel at but her continuous investment into her students is inspiring. Mrs. Smith is a master of her craft and moreover, does so with care, poise, and passion. Paige Smith was my high school Journalism and 12th grade Honors English teacher at Shadow Ridge High School. As an openly LGBTQ+ student in a LDS Church majority school, I often felt isolated, scared, anxious, and worried about how my peers and teachers would perceive me. However, Paige Smith made sure to make me feel included and important within her classroom and within school as a whole. In her journalism class, she encouraged me to write about topics that mattered to me, that didn’t hold back, and that were inspiring. She provided me with the freedom I needed as an aspiring teenage journalist to be who I wanted to be. Hands down my favorite teacher of all time was Paige. Every day, I looked forward to going to her class because I knew I had a teacher looking out for me who genuinely cared about who I was as a person. Mrs. Smith took the time to get to know me, which no teacher had ever done for me prior. I always knew that Paige’s classroom was a safe space for me. During my senior year, the pandemic hit and my school was forced to shut down, leaving many students like myself to feel mentally isolated. Despite the circumstances, Paige went out of her way to check in on students, reach out, and make sure they had someone to talk to. I owe so much of my growth to Mrs. Smith’s dedication to creating a safe learning environment. Because of her, I am now a Junior in college pursing a bachelors degree in Journalism. She has inspired me to want to work closely with students and learn from them. As I complete my degree and plan for achieving my masters degree, I look back on high school fondly and remember Paige well. I would not be who I am today if it wasn’t for her. Mrs. Smith is not only the life changer of the year, but the life changer of the decade. She has changed my life forever for good.
Thrilled to hear about this nomination! Paige Smith was the foundation for two of my children when they were in high school. As the journalism teacher, she treated them as staff members, placing responsibility and trust in their hands, resulting in their confidence and growth. As an English teacher, she truly opened herself and her love of literature and learning in a way that not only inspired but propelled them forward into their own life of Loving literature. Asa person, she is just wonderful. I’m forever grateful to Paige Smith for the impact she’s had on our family.
Paige was my mentor teacher while I student taught and I couldn’t have asked for someone better. She showed me how to love students, hold them to a high standard, and find joy in teaching. I think back to my time in her classroom and often remember her telling me: “If it’s not fun, what’s the point?” I try and implement that attitude into my classroom, so students remain engaged and find joy in their learning. She also showed me how important it is to connect with EACH student, not just the ones that are easy to connect with. At one point, we would pick a student for each other that we didn’t really know and challenge each other to go and talk to the student and learn something about them. I also remember that in my classroom, and look around to see who is being forgotten. Paige is truly amazing and definitely changed my life and others around her.
Mrs. Smith was one of the best teachers I have ever had. I took her Journalism class my junior and became an editor my senior year. She helped me to develop my confidence in journalistic writing and inspired me to pursue a career in journalism. Mrs. Smith is the most caring and thoughtful teacher I have ever had and I still regret not taking her dual enrollment english class. I am so lucky to have been her student and I am immensely grateful the impact she has had on me.
Mrs. Smith is makes English class entertaining for students. Not only is she a amazing English teacher, but she’s a bright and optimistic person overall. Some days I didn’t feel motivated to do anything but her bright spirit pushed me to do what needed to be done. Although I graduated high school, we still keep in touch. I was lucky enough to have Ms. Smith as my English teacher senior year 12 years ago and am lucky to get to see the impact she still holds til this day. I am always blown away at the amount of support she still gives to her students both present and past. She is someone who truly made me feel a part of her family and made me look forward to her class each day. She taught in a way that made you feel like she was your ally, someone who was in your corner at all times. Hands down one of the funniest people at Shadow Ridge making her ability to connect with every generation that has been lucky enough to have had her so easy. Mrs. Smith was honestly a backbone in my academic career. She took the success of her students personally and never rested until our goals were achieved. I started my senior year unsure of what college would look like for me, Mrs. Smith gave me tools to find a school that was the perfect fit for me, she told me to set the bar high and cheered me on the whole way. When I got into my dream school she was probably more excited than I was. Mrs. Smith was the reason coming to school was so easy, she cheered me on, never let me take the easy way out, she was a good listener and an even better friend. I’m not sure if she even knows the impact she had on my peers and I. That is just the perfect reflection of the kind of teacher she is. Just showing up for her students without taking the impact she has into consideration, it is just who she is. Mrs. Smith is the perfect candidate for life changer of the year.
Mrs. Smith is not only one of the best teachers I’ve ever experienced throughout my education, but one of the most down to earth, best people. I am now a third year pre-nursing student at UNLV and have yet to encounter someone I enjoyed as much as her. I learned so much in her class, but I also felt welcomed, important, helped, and supported. Mrs. Smith has poured her heart and soul into her career and it shows through her tenacity, and demeanor towards her students and fellow faculty. I had the privilege of taking two classes under her, and I loved both of them. If anyone deserves this nomination and acknowledgement, it is her! She has changed my view on life and school.
Mrs. Smith created such a unique and exciting learning experience on a daily basis, almost to the point of me changing my career path. I had always enjoyed my English courses but never in the same way as when she instructed me. I found that there was so much more to not only the English language, but the demeanor and delivery of teaching as a whole. On the days I felt the least motivation in school, I always had her class to look forward to; the energy that she brought to the classroom was truly captivating. Even the students you may never expect to enjoy this class found it interesting and exciting. Mrs. Smith brings such a welcoming aura that I would often spend my lunches chatting with her and other English teachers; and on the days I was out of school early, I would often stop by her Journalism class to pass time. I never imagined I would feel compelled to stay longer at school than I needed to. Mrs. Smith has readily written me a letter of recommendation, and I feel she would happily help any past, present, or future student when they needed it. If I were to ever nominate an individual for this award, I couldn’t think of a better candidate than Mrs. Smith.
Mrs. Smith’s work goes beyond teaching English and journalism. She has always taken an interest in her students lives by helping promote positivity and laughter in the classroom. There was never a class period that did not contain some form of laughter and fun. Mrs. Smith is a ray of sunshine that has never failed to brighten my day. So proud of you Mrs. Smith and your amazing career.
I was a student of Mrs. Smith and she gave me confidence and motivation in a time when I truly needed it. She taught me how to be a better writer, but she also prepared me for the future and was my greatest supporter and advocate. I had the privilege of being Mrs. Smith’s student for Journalism and Dual Credit English for 3 years of high school. Mrs. Smith is one of the most influential educators I’ve had the pleasure of learning under. I was lucky enough to be her student for my junior and senior year of high school. She was not only a phenomenal teacher who helped me prepare for my future in college, but also a mentor. Through college she continued to mentor me as I prepared for my own career in education and provide me opportunities to learn from her and other educators. Her passion for educating and influencing her students in a positive way is unmatched and something all educators strive for. She has greatly changed my life and continues to be a positive influence in my life even years after I’ve left her classroom through her teaching, parenting, and being an overall strong, inspirational woman. Ms. Smith sees students for who they are. She does not judge people based on appearances or the ways they choose to communicate. She has a keen sense of a person’s interests and abilities, and has a way of relating to students that few teachers have. I recall a particular instance when I was in her journalism class wherein I wrote an article that we were both proud of. Unfortunately, the subject matter expert was less than thrilled with the final draft. However, Ms. Smith was supportive of my work and my decision to not edit (and ultimately publish) the article in a way that was disingenuous to my writing. This was over 10 years ago and I still think about the impact that level of support had on me. I can count on one hand the number of teachers to whom I still credit some of my success in navigating the “real world”, and Paige is one of them.
I had Mrs. Smith my senior year of high school back in 2017. She was by far one of my favorite teachers at Shadow Ridge. This was due to her ability to connect with students, create an engaging learning environment, and support us in our goals and aspirations. Since graduating I have contacted her for help on scholarships and kept her up to speed on my life updates. I have even visited her since graduation with classroom with former class mates. She is an incredible person and absolutely deserves this award.
Using the word “perfect” to describe Mrs. Smith as a teacher is an understatement. She is one of the few teachers I’ve seen who actually takes pride in her job and does it to the best of her ability. You can tell that she truly cares about each an every one of her students, as well as her work as a teacher, whether that be in assignments, projects, tests, videos, games, etc. Mrs. Smith leaves every one of her students happy and full of knowledge, which is something only great teachers do. I even see many sad to graduate and move on because of the impact Mrs. Smith has had on them.
Ms. Smith is one of the best instructors I have had throughout my academic career. She was my teacher for three consecutive years and supported my efforts whether it pertained to my academics or personal life. Smith is one of the most understanding and charismatic individuals I have ever met. She has helped me better both my writing and public speaking skills. She is also one of my role models even now as I navigate my way through college and my professional career. Truly an outstanding educator and person.
Incredibly incisive, patient, and humorous, Mrs. Smith remains perhaps one of my most memorable (and favorite) high school teachers. Her teachings have equipped me with the grammar and journalism skills that have greatly impacted my career in political communications. I always counted on Mrs. Smith to make me laugh, especially when she showed us hilariously cringe-worthy music videos (It’s Thanksgiving) or chatted with me about Big Brother. She has impacted the lives of so many of her students and I believe this award would honor her work.
Paige (Mrs. Smith) was an amazing teacher! I went to college for physics, but English was my favorite class my senior year of high school and nearly entirely due to Mrs. Smith. She deserves to be recognized for her amazing teaching abilities and the impact she’s had on all of her students!
Mrs. Smith was so much more than a teacher. She was a friend to me when I often felt like I had none. I always felt right at home every time I walked into her classroom. Mrs. Smith introduced me to journalism and the inspiration that comes from sharing stories with others. Thank you Mrs. Smith for being the best teacher, mentor, and friend.
As a long time educator alongside Paige, I love that she is being recognized for the outstanding human that she is. I have learned so much about having high expectations and compassion from her. Paige treats each of her students like they are her family. Because of that, the results are incredible. She has students who know her, love her sense of humor, and walk away from her classroom equipped for the real world.
