"Ms. Shurtleff has been an uplifting and inspirational teacher who has fostered growth, positivity, and inclusivity in her classroom, and I have been very lucky to have her as a teacher," said the student. "Throughout this year, she has consistently worked with me in order to ensure understanding, while also connecting with me as a friend. Her cheerful exterior allows for me and other students to feel welcomed into her classroom. Even in her friendliness, she has maintained an instructive curriculum that provides a readiness for testing within her classroom while also teaching valuable life skills."
"Her influence is not confined to her classroom," said the student. "She has made a name for herself in our school with her commitment to the Slam Poetry Club, where she has allowed people to voice their joy, sadness, anger, and so many other emotions in a friendly environment. She has also spearheded an outreach project within our school and community where she has promoted diversity and equality through a Holocaust Memorial, which will be accompanied with presentations from members of our local Jewish community. Her impact is so vast in our school and community, so it is hard to confine everything in this short message, but overall, Ms. Shurtleff is an amazing teacher who has been so impactful, both in my life and the lives of all of her students."
I have known Alexis Shurtleff for nearly 20-years. Alexis values education, but most of all, she values her students. She is a positive influence in their lives and is dedicated to helping them succeed.
Alexis is an amazing human!! I have known her for almost ten years and she has done so much for other people.
Alexis is an incredibly compassionate and dedicated teacher. She cares so much about her students and their education and strives to make her classroom a safe learning environment for all students. She goes above and beyond to create engaging lessons that the students can relate to while managing to teach them relevant historical context and current events.
Alexis pushes her students to learn, grow, and be responsible but is also accommodating if necessary.
Alexis also strives to make herself a better teacher and coworker through constant training and development. As the department head she is always ensuring her fellow teachers have the help and tools they need to provide the best learning environment possible.
Alexis is a wonderful teacher. I teach middle school and my students feed into her classes. She always gives me the highlights for my former students and it’s always great to hear what they are up to! It’s apparent that she cares about her students and works hard to give them the resources and tools to succeed.
To Miss Shurtleff, her students come first. She prepares fun and interactive learning experiences for the classroom. As a result she has been able to build great relationships with her students, have a bond of trust and are inspired. Being a teacher isn’t just a job to her, Miss Shurtleff goes above and beyond for her students. She is well integrated with the school and seeks out opportunities for the students to shares their voices in a safe environment, like the Slam Poetry Club. Giving this award to Miss Shurtleff will so give her class enormous amounts of pride and inspire them further. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this award.
I had Mrs. Shurtleff my senior year of high school, I was originally taking an AP English class but I was falling far behind and wasn’t going to be able to keep up and transferred into her class halfway through the year. Right away I could tell everyone in her class believed they had a voice, and not only that but when they spoke they were heard. Real conversations happened. Real engagement happened. I’ve always loved English class, but something about the way she taught had me mesmerized. Every assignment we had felt personal, like she genuinely took her time to make her assignments engaging and fun for everyone. My last semester of high school I had begun trading books with her. I started reading The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides, and the story line was just so mesmerizing that I absolutely had to share it with someone. I asked her if she had ever read the book and if she wanted to. I came back two days later and she had finished it. THE WHOLE THING. On top of grading, making assignments, planning her lessons, and living her life, she took the time out of her day to sit down and read this book. I will never love a teacher as much as I loved her and I don’t think anyone has ever set such a high bar in my life. If anyone deserves this, it’s Mrs. Shurtleff. (If you see this Mrs. S, thank you so much for the impact you had on my life. You made high school bearable)
Alexis is a phenomenal teacher. She’s always is thinking up ways to make her lessons more impactful for her students. She takes time and goes above and beyond to help her students understand the concepts she is teaching and learn life lessons along the way. There are many days I wish I were still a student so I could take her class!
Time and again Alexis has gone above and beyond for both our kids, giving them personalized attention and finding ways to help them foster a love for learning. Couldn’t think of a better choice for this honor.
Alexis is the department head and leads the English department with kindness, knowledge, and fairness. She cares about her students growth, both educationally and socially, and it shows in the way she teaches.
You can tell by just a few minutes talking to Alexis about her job as a teacher that she genuinely cares about her students and their success - not just in her class but in their overall education and well-being. She is both professional and caring in her teaching objectives and her lessons are thoroughly planned.
Alexis not only teaches the students she works with, but provides an enriching experience throughout the process. She connects with students by pulling in current events and making pop culture references. She is enthusiastic and caring to her students. Alexis pushes herself as an educator by continuing to learn and by educating other staff members.
Alexis is our oldest grandchild and has always been a great example to all of her extended family. It has been so special to see how she relates to her students. We are proud of all her accomplishments and happy to see she is being recognized for her achievements.
