Music that Describes Brandie

Brandie Nelson was nominated by Rachael Harms, her principal.

"Mrs. Nelson is one of those rare teachers who deeply understands how kids learn and knows how to reach kids who exhibit concerning behaviors," said Harms. "Her classroom is an inviting space with calming music, low lighting, sensory tools, and an abundance of love. She can teach kids to read, but she can also teach kids to function as a learner in a school."

Mrs. Nelson works with students who struggle with impulse control, or who have endured trauma and do not trust adults. When other adults are tempted to throw up their hands and quit, Mrs. Nelson comes up with another way to try.

"I can't even estimate how many students she has helped, but it is likely thousands," explains Harms. "She even has a former student who struggled with writing and is now a published author of three books! In addition to assisting students, she has helped create systems to support students."

"With her guidance, we have implemented structures for intensive behavioral and academic intervention that allow us to meet the needs of more students than one person alone can manage," said Harms. "She has changed our school for the better and has undoubtedly saved lives with her dedication to children."

The district leadership has tried multiple times to move Mrs. Nelson into a position where she can mentor other teachers. Still, she stays firmly planted in Chapman Hill, where she can continue to make a difference in the lives of her students.

"The world needs more Mrs. Nelsons - true champions of children," said Harms.
