LifeChanger of the Year Nominee Profile

Kristy Arguelles was nominated by an anonymous colleague.

"Mrs. Arguelles currently serves as our Library Media Specialist, but she does so much more than just manage the library and catalog books," explains her nominator. "She is an active leader in our school and community, and she is pivotal in the success of our students, both inside and outside of the classroom."

Whereas many librarians sit in the periphery as students enter and exit their library doors, Mrs. Arguelles takes an active role in the educational and emotional well-being of every student she encounters.  A student is below grade-level in reading?  No worries - Mrs. Arguelles is quick to pull out the reading intervention kit sitting below her desk.  A student can’t divide fractions?  Mrs. Arguelles is on it, teaching them tips and tricks to mastering the skill. A student doesn’t have warm clothes in the winter?  Mrs. Arguelles has a stash of clothes tucked away with items generously donated by members of the community.  Her love for students is second-to-none, and she only wants what’s best for them.

"Mrs. Arguelles is also what I call 'aerial support' for our school.  Anywhere she sees something can be done to improve our school, or where she can drop in to support teachers, she does so," said her nominator.  "If teachers need copies made or fixed assets to be completed, Mrs. Arguelles is there to help and ease their stress. The stressful job of a classroom teacher is made somewhat easier simply because Mrs. Arguelles is always willing to drop in and help, no matter the task."

"In addition to her supporting teachers, Mrs. Arguelles works hard to bridge a gap between the greater community and our school. On several occasions this school year, Mrs. Arguelles arranged Open House days for our universities, businesses, and parents of students to come into our school and see what amazing things are happening for kids.  Mrs. Arguelles believes that by bridging these gaps, we are more apt to grow as a school if we have the support and trust from these institutions and people," said the nominator.

"Finally, Mrs. Arguelles is the most humble person I know.  She would never seek this honor and distinction out on her own, and I believe that is what makes her all the worthier.  It shows that she is in education for the right—and only—reasons:  not for herself, but for students. She is so deserving of this award," said the nominator.
