Music that Describes Libby

Libby Micela was nominated by her colleague, Rachelle Sears.

"If you're ever looking for Libby, here are some helpful things to look for: someone walking around campus with a beautiful, welcoming smile, and probably a t-shirt that says 'Bee Kind,' 'Positive Vibes,' or 'Dream * Believe * Achieve *.' No matter what, she’ll greet you by name, make eye contact, and make you feel like the most important person in the world," explains Sears.

"I met Libby Micela when she was hired as a kindergarten teacher. She was wonderful with her students, parents, and colleagues. For the first time, I had a friend and colleague. We collaborated, attended PLC meetings together, ate lunch together, and shared much light-hearted laughs. She has a way of making you feel like you are the funniest, smartest, or kindest person. She lifts the other person up. Clearly, I adore her, but that is not why she should be a nominated."

Mrs. Micela attended Arizona State University, where she received a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education (K-8). She also attended Ottawa University, where she received her Master's Degree in School Guidance Counseling (K-12). Since she holds full state certifications in both (as well as endorsements in Early Childhood, Reading Specialist, and SEI), she has options in what she can do in a school setting. When asked at the end of the year if anyone was interested in changing positions, she’d mention she could help in areas of counseling. She did not expect to move from kindergarten, but made the offer since she is accommodating.

Prior to 2019, Las Sendas Elementary never had a school counselor. As a matter of fact, at that time, Arizona stood at 905 students for every counselor. For the 2019-2020 school year, Mesa Public Schools took steps to reduce that ratio. They hired Mrs. Micela as a counselor, and this school year will mark her third year as a school counselor. If you ask anyone on campus, they will instantly say, “We do not know how we ever survived without a school counselor!”  With a campus of around 800 students, having a counselor is the glue to the community. She advocates for the children and is supportive to the parents and staff.

Weekly, she teaches social/emotional lessons. Since learning is social and emotional, Mrs. Micela takes a whole-child approach to education, moving beyond a focus on academic achievement alone to incorporate life skills. She is building relationships. She teaches children how to manage emotions and make responsible decisions. Mrs. Micela has found her gift, and that gift is connecting to students and giving strategies to help children.

Las Sendas Elementary is a K-6 school, so you can imagine the range of social-emotional challenges that come from 5 years old to 12 years old. On any given day, you can find Mrs. Micela teaching a little one how to “belly breathe” when he needs to calm down, or inviting a group of 6th grade girls to eat lunch with her. She does that to be a safe place for the girls and to talk through friendship issues in a real scenario. In a school this large, Mrs. Micela not only teaches classes, but also needs to be available to manage 800 students, and there can be plenty of challenges. She has changed lives by being available every day in a full-time capacity.

Not everyday is teaching SEL lessons for Mrs. Micela. Some days, she has to tackle hard topics such as suicide concerns, self-harm, and children who have had a death in the family.

Outside of her School Counselor role, you can find Mrs. Micela volunteering to help field trips, organizing book drives, presenting at staff meetings, helping the principal and the office professionals, or loading up food items after a food drive. She will always help others!

"A person who enjoys advocating for children and is approachable and kind is very deserving to be nominated for LifeChanger of the Year. I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this special honor," said Sears.

Libby, counselor extraordinaire! Las Sendas is truly fortunate to have such an amazing counselor on our campus. Not only is she there for our students, but she’s an invaluable support for our staff as well. In addition to being available for immediate concerns, Libby works hard to be proactive and teach students strategies they can use at school and at home. Ms. Micela inspires those around her to be better and kinder and creates a safe space for those in need, a true example of a Lifechanger. I am honored to work with such an incredible colleague!

We met Ms. Micela when our oldest child went to Kindergarten. As a parent sending my first baby off to school not knowing anyone was a little overwhelming to think about at times. I hoped & prayed she would would have an amazing teacher, an amazing year & it would be a good experience for all of us. Ms. Micela more than exceeded my hopes & prayers. She wasn’t just the best teacher for my child, she was the best for all of us. She always welcomed us with open arms, was always just a phone call or email away. I was so sad when I heard she wouldn’t be teaching the next year when I would have another Kindergartner. Then she became the Counselor, which meant we would still get to interact with her on a regular basis. I will always be grateful for the blessing she is in all of our lives. We love you Ms. Micela!

As a parent in todays world, sending my precious children to school can sometimes feel overwhelming and frightening. Words can not express the gratitude and comfort I feel knowing that Libby Micela is a text away when our family is in need of extra support. Libby goes above and beyond her required duties to help see that my kiddos thrive during these challenging years of elementary school. Having a child who battles anxiety on the daily, it can be especially exhausting as a parent. On a particularly challenging day last year my child was in tears at drop off. After coming home and talking things through we finally came to an agreement to go back to school, but only if she could talk to Mrs Micela first. Libby worked her magic by talking things through, and even followed up with a phone call to me. Libby is a ray of light and hope in our family. She has the skills to do what I can’t as a parent. She is extraordinarily dedicated, positive and generous. We are so blessed to have the gift of a Mrs. Micela in our life.

Libby Micela is not just a great person and counselor... she is "extraordinary" in every way!! Libby is the first line of support for students and Staff. Libby is so successful at her job because of her compassion & support. She is an advisor and advocator for those that seek her guidance. Libby understands the power of connections and supports everyone to become the best that they can possibly be while offering techniques on how to cope with challenges, struggles, etc. (especially during these COVID years). Libby facilities thinking and coach students to make decisions as they work through their struggles, etc. At the same time, she is cultivating the dreams of so many of our students. She is a true leader by taking on more roles than just the counselor at our school. One of the things I adore most about Libby is how she radiates "pure joy"! Once you are around Libby, you always want to be around her. She has an infectious personality that puts everyone around her in such a good mood that they forget their worries.

Libby Micela is a perfect candidate for LifeChanger of the year! Three years ago, when Libby was hired as our school counselor, I was excited. I knew she would be a good counselor for our school. At that time, I did not know what a GREAT counselor she would be. Libby has become a crucial part of our school. Since we often work together, I have observed Libby in action many times. She is always professional, empathetic, knowledgeable, and trustworthy. I have witnessed her impact on our school. She has become a leader, having a huge influence on learning. Libby has a natural way of making others feel valued. She collaborates with staff to help students succeed. She has built so many relationships with students, staff, and parents. She has been there for students who have had traumatic losses. She checks in with them and makes sure they are doing well. The students know there is someone at school who cares about them, and they can go to for support. She has helped change their lives. I am so happy Libby was nominated as LifeChanger of the year. This honor could not go to a better person.

Nobody deserves this award more than Mrs. Micela! She has helped my daughter navigate through school. Wether it be for belly breathing when she’s prepping for a test or mentor friendships. She is someone my daughter trusts and so do I! She definitely deserves this title!

Libby, You truly are a blessing to our staff and students. Many times over the last couple years I have sought your counsel with unique circumstances in my class. Thank you for your kind and wise guidance that has been so helpful and instrumental in bringing about positive change. I see how you interact with students through their struggles. You have loving patience, give them positive direction and encouragement, teach them coping and self advocacy skills, and respond with whatever help is needed. You are so loved and deserving of this recognition!
