Music that Describes Latoshia

Latoshia Cannon was nominated by Darryl Webster, a colleague.

For 20 years, Ms. Cannon has tirelessly devoted her life as an educator to serving children. She taught speech and language to students in South Korea for years before moving to Washington DC to teach special education students. In 2014, she joined the District of Columbia Public Schools System (DCPS) as special education teacher at the Columbia Heights Education Center. After four years of dedicated service to special education students, she moved on to Tubman Elementary School, where she's currently spending her 8th year. Her unique ability to lead and work collaboratively with teachers, mental health staff, community partners, and other interagency entities has proven to be a strength of hers that has served the school well.

Her pleasing personality and caring demeanor has made a tremendous difference in the school’s culture. She goes all out for the students, and her enthusiasm is shown each and every day she enters the building. Regardless of how stressful things get at school, she puts her best foot forward, rolls up her sleeves, and works until the job is done. During holiday events like Halloween and Throwback to the 80’s, her elaborate costumes bring great joy to the school atmosphere. Her leadership earned her highly effective ratings, as well as a promotion to assistant principal in August 2021. She goes the extra mile to ensure her school meets various special education timelines and mandates. During the COVID-19 pandemic, her leadership helped maintain the efficient operations of the school. She received highly effective ratings and recently was promoted to assistant principal at Tubman ES.
