Surmeet is dedicated to her students and always goes the extra mile. She and I partner to provide self-protection and Teen Dating Violence presentations to all of her students at all the schools she serves. In addition, she recommends services to other school counselors and during 2020 when it wasn't possible to see students face-to-face she figured out a way for me to present via Zoom but be "me" in the classroom. Her students love and appreciate her and it is apparent by watching her interactions with them.

Surmeet is a School Counselor in Bering, Alaska and serves as a counselor for two schools in the area. Surmeet has to be the easiest person to talk to on this planet, such a great listener, and has a very comforting presence. These qualities and the care she takes of the people around her is truly inspiring because it gives folks an opportunity to open up, not feel judged and feel heard. She’s fostered a sense of community within her patient work and the people she works which is why she often goes above and beyond when it comes to her work. I have met here once in Anchorage and she seems very nice. My friend in Brevig also shares about how nice and helpful she is in the community, in the school, to students as well as to her colleagues.
Surmeet is warm with students and welcoming with visitors to her school and community. She participates in a leadership role with Upward Bound. Making her school one of a small handfull int he state to offer this college and career connection for high school students. This means dedicating time multiple days a week to after school tutoring and college readiness guidance. She helps students see themselves as capable, competent, and ready to meet new challenges in new places. Many of these students are the first generation in their family to attend college and come from families that live below the poverty line.

I met Surmeet at a job fair in Missouri, where I had the pleasure of interview her and subsequently be a part of offering her a contract to move to Alaska to serve the children of our school district. Since then not only has Surmeet become a valued colleague, but she has become like another daughter to me.
She gives 100+ percent of herself to all of the students she serves and does it with such a loving heart that lifelong relationships are formed. Being willing to make such a huge adjustment in her living situation by moving to a very remote village in Alaska, for the sole purpose of changing the lives of students is the perfect example of the dedication she has for her work. We are so lucky to have her as a part of our team and I am so blessed to call her "family". I have no doubt Surmeet will continue to change lives for the better for many years to come. Surmeet has been a joy in our community, especially in our school. A lot of the students have warmed up to her and can talk to her about anything going on in their lives. She goes above and beyond during school hours for every student and staff member in the building. She uses her best judgment and knowledge of the students' personal life to best help them with their struggles and she adds a little extra love while doing so.
I met Surmeet when I was working at the Teller school where she served our students there as well as the Brevig Mission School. From studying for the Counselor to working as a Counselor is a journey I witnessed first hand. Coming from India and studying in a place like Maryville and then working in a super remote place like Brevig Mission takes a lot of courage and confidence to do that. I met Surmeet five summers ago in my University Orientation process. My first impression of her was that `who is this tiny human so full of life with brimming enthusiasm`. She had an aura of happiness around her, was easy to talk to, very approachable in that big room full of people, and so we got talking in the wink of an eye. Soon, I learned that she chose to be a Counselor, a course only a handful understood in India. I was no exception. I come from a land of engineers and doctors.
You ought to be strong-willed and exceptional to pick a versatile career and pursue it with confidence, when seeking help from the near and dear is not an alternative. As dumbledore says, its our choices that show what we indeed are, far more than our abilities. You would be surprised to know that Surmeet was the youngest in her class. She was in it to win it from day one, and I'm so pleased that she is being recognized in her line of work. I'm also elated to hear about her accomplishments and the little wins that she gathered along the way while making a difference in little lives under her mentorship.
Personally, I've seen her grow from strength to strength enduring all the hardships a student life offers. I've seen her write motivational quotes on sticky notes and paste them on the mirror to remind us how awesome we are every day. Tiny changes, as in Surmeet do bring in a lot of optimism and be rest assured if she is around as she'd invariably nudge you in the right direction, she genuinely takes good care of the people around her.

Ms. Surmeet represents a working body of counseling professionals who symbolize high work ethics, standards, cross cultural awareness, and proficiency. I would ask the Awarding committee to consider that Surmeet works in a remote region of Alaska. Although the overall number of respondents may appear low she has impacted a family in every village within our region. Per capita Ms. Surmeet response posts represent over 15% of our region, over 100% of the village (community) residents, and a large cross section of cultures and age groups (youth to elders). Lastly, she is an indelible and lifelong impact in our lives.

Surmeet has been so good to me since I arrived in our School. She's always been ready to help and always there to listen to your struggles! I can see her dedication to serve the children in the bush. She welcomes every child with smile and so much positivity! I am so blessed to have known her as our guidance counselor and as a friend.
Surmeet has been a wonderful addition to our Bering Strait School District counseling staff! She sponsors the Educators Rising Chapter in Brevig Mission, supporting and encouraging potential local teachers to gain in confidence and skills. I got to see and work with her in classrooms, facilitating wellness activities with the junior high and high school classes. I not surprised that Surmeet Gaba has been nominated for an award as a person who changes lives for the better. I have observed Surmeet positively interact both personally and professionally with children and adults. In her job as school counselor to two remote Native villages, I observed her positive, supportive attitude enable her to gain the trust of young students and even hard to reach teenagers. She has a happy, friendly, nonthreatening way of engaging with student and adults from all walks of life and cultures.
When Surmeet needs to discuss a hard truth, she doesn't shy away from the discussion. Instead, Surmeet comes right out and addresses difficult issues in an ernest, honest, and non-threatening manner. Her non-judgmental attitude and accepting demeanor win over even the most angry, or scared child. After a conversation with Surmeet, students want to cooperate with her and complete whatever tasks she suggests to help with their personal concerns. She teaches and encourages students to use techniques to enable them to deal with anxiety, fear, trauma, depression, anger, conflict resolution, and other issues that can cause children to struggle in school and in the community.
Surmeet also stresses self-care and wellness with students as preventative measures. She takes a genuine interest in each student with whom she interacts and pays close attention to their conversations. Taking the time and being such a careful listener enables Surmeet to discover the unique needs of each student she encounters. She is not only very good at her job, she is also a very nice, kind person. I am proud to be her colleague and friend.

I have known Surmeet for 20 years now.
She has always been this caring,loving,kind and selfless person.
She is this confident woman with a soul as pure as a kid.
There is this particular conversation that I had with Surmeet and it will always remain very close to my heart. We were doing our long distance friendship thing,calling each other at random hours and just talking. I asked Surmeet, now you have a degree and I am sure you have so many opportunities to move out of Alaska. Why live in such harsh conditions? And her response to this was, "my kids need me more right now in Alaska".
And this is when I knew that my best friend was gonna do great things. I remember having tears in my eyes and I still do while I'm typing this. That day she inspired me to be a better human being too.

I have known Surmeet for more than a decade now as a very optimistic and soft-spoken person. Even as a child, I remember her to be very caring and loving by nature. Surmeet is an exceptional individual that deserves recognition for the work that she has done with students in the Upward Bound Program at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Surmeet effectively co-created a mental health curriculum based around the utilization of biofeedback sensors and wellness practices. She then worked with students in her community and across the State of Alaska to implement the curriculum in a remotely supported environment.

I was introduced to Surmeet by a common friend. Surmeet is one of the most courageous and positive people I have met in my life. We have only met on FaceTime and phone calls, but thanks to her warmth and kindness, our friendship is strong. She is fiercely independent and loves what she does. Surmeet is always able to see the positive. She sends me lots of photos of Brevig Misiion because she knows I love nature and Alaska. I’m so glad she has been nominated for this award —she truly deserves it!

As soon as my brother left NSHC to be sent out after his accident, I knew I had to get on the next flight out. My brother was in critical condition and nobody knew what was going to happen. Thanks to Jessica, I was able to get down to Anchorage to be John’s cheerleader and mom and dad’s moral support.
Let’s rewind a little though. There was an angel at the airport. A woman that just happened to be in the right place at the right time as I was.
I was AN ABSOLUTE MESS in Alaska Airlines. I ran back and forth from the bathroom to grab tissue. I’d breathe for a few minutes, then start to bawl again. I went up the the counter service agent and I begged her to get me a seat. I was on standby and we all know that there is nothing we can do, but sit and play the waiting game. This was not the day. My heart was already below the ankle and my anxiety was through the roof. Worst case scenarios kept racing through my head and I’d cry. I started to ask person by person to give up their seat. Nobody seemed to be able to.... So I sat and cried more.
This lady I mentioned before, she came and was the first to ask me what was going on. I broke down ... but this stranger... she held me and listened to me cry. She took me to sit next to her and she wiped my tears... She FED me pizza. (I told her I couldn’t eat, but she didn’t take no for an answer). She gave me a caprisun to drink, and had normal conversations with me. She made sure I was ok and I won’t ever forget her.
We both made it on the flight to Anchorage and gave each other big hugs as we went our separate ways in the Ted Stevens International Airport. Before leaving , she made sure I had a ride coming.
God bless her heart. If you ever read this, thank you. Thank you for being kind to me , and teaching me that it is important in a world where you can be anything, to be kind.

My brother survived the accident. In result, he is now a paraplegic patient. His name is John, and he thanks you too for being there for his baby sister, who longed to be with him.

If there is one person who deserves this award more than anyone then it would be Surmeet. She is joyful, optimistic, caring and above all a very generous person. Once she sets her mind on to something she'll give her all to achieve it and do it right. There are many people who say that they want to bring a change in this world and help others by doing so but they seldom do it when the time comes. Surmeet isn't one of them. She chose the path to help others ever since she thought about it and she continues to do so selflessly. It takes a lot of courage and determination to do this while staying so far away from home. Surmeet is a dear friend, and one of the most caring, supportive, and positive persons I have encountered in life. We have known each other since grad school. She was always there to provide moral support in getting through the difficult phase of being a grad student and making ends meet.
Even post grad school, to this day, there have been countless occasions where I have shared my life problems with her (mostly through organic conversation - she is a master at that!). She just has a knack for listening keenly, understanding, and providing optimal insights into any situation. She is very perceptive, and I believe her ability to balance empathy and remedial action, is what makes her uniquely approachable, likable, and trusted, even by her students.
On the professional front, over the past couple years, Surmeet has been providing social-emotional, behavioral, academic, and suicide prevention counseling services to two rural areas in the state of Alaska. She has become endeared there by the school staff, students, and community members alike, and has implemented several successful programs for student and community well-being.
She truly is a selflessly committed person and consistently has been touted as going above and beyond towards her North Star - to ensure that her students’ and her communities’ needs are met, and that they have the best possible guidance in overcoming grave challenges such as intergenerational trauma and becoming healthy, happy and successful.

Surmeet Gaba is a wonderful young woman . I know her personally since her childhood. She is most dedicated and always helpful to people . She goes out of her way to make people happy and comfortable. It’s a pleasure knowing her. She has this attitude of never giving up. She is caring to a different level. She is in a joint family in India and despite being the youngest in family , she is extra concerned for everyone’s needs , including her Grandad. The warmth she exudes is very welcoming . She truly deserves this life changer award !! ?? .
