LifeChanger of the Year Nominee Profile

Misty Whitehead was nominated anonymously.

Mrs. Whitehead has been a LifeChanger since 2014, when she started teaching. She currently teaches software development after discovering her love for the subject in 2019. She has taught various courses like computer applications, STEM, and computer science and engineering. During each of those classes, she has incorporated coding without realizing until recently that she has been teaching programming since the beginning.

Her passion for programming spills over into her students. This is visible in the way her students talk about their work and how they have fun programming in class. Her students are excited to share their work with others and are willing to help other students as they program. She also volunteers as the robotics club co-sponsor and Technology Student Association co-sponsor.  

Mrs. Whitehead is also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the International Society for Key Women Educators. She is currently the president of her local chapter of Beta Beta. As a project for the 2021-2022 school year, Mrs. Whitehead applied for and received a grant from WE Teachers through a partnership with Walgreens. She won $500 that she was able to use towards making calm-down boxes for 20 first-year teachers in four different counties.

"Mrs. Whitehead not only strives to support early-career educators, but she also presents on computer science and engineering at conferences to help other teachers incorporate these topics into their classes. She spends multiple hours applying for grants so that her students will have access to materials to enrich their STEM education. She is constantly thinking about her students before herself. All of these reasons are why she is a LifeChanger," said her nominator.
