Chayanee Brooks was nominated by her spouse, David Brooks.
"As Chayanee's spouse, I see her tireless dedication to supporting students and improving her own professional development. I am also a colleague of Chayanee’s at the same Title 1 school on the Big Island of Hawaii, where I see her impact on the students and other teachers directly," said David. "Chayanee has always known she would be a teacher. She comes from a family of teachers in Thailand, where her grandmother started the teaching tradition in her family. I have witnessed Chayanee’s unwavering love of teaching and can attest wholeheartedly to her hugely impactful effect on students and the teaching profession in Hawaii."
The love and dedication Mrs. Brooks commits to her students has made significant, beneficial differences in their lives. She is currently a Pulitzer Center Teacher Fellow involved in bringing students' untold stories to light. This fellowship formally is recognizing her constant advocacy for student voice, with classroom lessons designed to maximize engagement and collaboration. Mrs. Brooks has made socratic seminars a norm for students in her English and AP English classes. Her students are remarkably more confident in speaking and sharing their opinions with enough critical thinking to take others’ opinions into account.
"I notice this in my social studies classes and see the impact Chayanee is having on the students beyond her own classroom," said David.
In addition to creating a great community in her classrooms for cogenerative, open-ended, and explorative dialogues that generate authentic learning experiences, Mrs. Brooks loves to get to the students' level and learn with them. She works with students, rather than above them, to celebrate insights. She doesn't shy away from controversial subjects. Students know her classroom is a safe environment for sharing opinions and growth. Whenever conflicts may arise that warrant intervention, Mrs. Brooks uses restorative practices to keep the community of learners caring about all students equally.
Mrs. Brooks is constantly reading state-level memos that offer opportunities to impact students. In 2016, she applied for Ka’u High School to join college tours that were sponsored by the state. As a result, two groups of rising seniors were able to visit west coast colleges and universities to see what higher education environments looked like in person. Several of those students went on to four-year colleges and universities including, but not limited to: UC Davis, Georgetown, Princeton, University of Texas, University of Hawaii Manoa, and University of Hawaii, Hilo.
Mrs. Brooks' impact on those students was very significant because 90% of the student body at her school is eligible for free and reduced lunch. She has also taken students to join science fairs, provided make-up services to students before proms, taken students on field trips to plant trees in nature preserves, and much more. Students love Mrs. Brooks because she is making a huge, beneficial impact on their lives, and it shows.
More than impacting students, Mrs. Brooks is making a huge impact on other teachers and state-level policies. She's a district-level mentor, which allows her to work closely with beginning teachers at her school to help them improve their own teaching practices. She's also a Hawaii State Teacher Fellow, which gives her a platform to direct changes at the state level. Recently, Mrs. Brooks co-taught a professional development course for teachers that investigated how the book What Schools Could Be by Ted Dintersmith could inspire schools and teachers to find authentic learning opportunities. Currently, she's designing a state-level professional development course for teachers that will focus on equitable grading policies, especially competency-based grading. The goal is to allow more teachers to be able to use assessments as impactful tools to help students grow and find joy in their growth, which will impact students (and families) by changing the focus from, “What’s my grade?” to “Where can I grow and develop from where I am now?”
As part of the Teacher Fellow group, Mrs. Brooks has the opportunity to work with the state superintendent to discuss assessment, supporting schools’ social and emotional learning approaches, and more. What makes her so special is her inclusion of students' voices when she is working with state and district-level people. She regularly discusses issues with students before meetings so she can share what the students themselves are thinking and experiencing. For example, Mrs. Brooks recently discussed state-wide universal screeners and how they are impacting students’ emotional health. Of course, she asked a diverse group of students what they really thought of the testing they had to endure. The students knew Mrs. Brooks has their own interests as her priority, and they trust her completely, so they opened up with real insights that were valuable to share.
"At home, I see Chayanee constantly impacting students when she is giving feedback on student work and engaging in after-school meetings with colleagues," said David. "She takes all opportunities to improve herself seriously, but she shows her true love of teaching when she describes classes that have had dynamic discussions and engagement, the kind of meetings when the class time ends, but students don’t want to leave or end the discussion. When students take the lead in their learning, Chayanee is showing her mastery of giving students the opportunity to grow."
Recenty, Mrs. Brooks has been bringing in books to her classroom to distribute freely for pleasure/extensive reading. She has written grants to get books, and she scours thrift stores on a weekly basis to buy more books to put on her, “Free to take and read, independent reading classroom library” shelf. She thinks of what her students might like and tries to let students “taste” different kinds of books without pressure.
"Chayanee and I both teach a student who has identified learning disabilities," said David. "Because Chayanee shares books freely for ‘tasting’ and ‘exploring’, this student told her, paraphrasing: 'This is the first book I have ever enjoyed reading. I can connect with it because it is relevant and has an author’s voice that I can hear clearly.'"

Chayanee is a go-getter, persistent and will never back down from seeing her students succeed not only in Academics but in Life. I have worked with Chayanee for several years both as teachers who would collaborate on academic & classroomm managment strategies and as mentors and coaches working towards providing support for our teachers in an array of academic and behavior concerns. She thinks outside the box, is always willing to go the extra mile and find new avenues for students to try something new. Teaching in a rural community has its pros and cons, yet Chayanee is always uplifting and keeps a positive attitude with students letting them know that with a little hard work now they can make big strides for their future after high school. It is such a joy as a literacy coach to pop in her room for a quick walkthrough and see students engaged and understanding their reading material; and believe me some of the reading material required for 11th & 12th grade - lets just say I would lose interest. She has a great sense of humor about her. You can see it in her eyes and body expressions. If you were to walk around campus and ask about Mrs. Brooks her students boost with "she is always positive", "she will go above and beyond'', "If I do not understand something she will take the time to really sit down and help me", "she is always cheerful and really makes connections with you" and my favorite "she is easily approachable with help in any class". I honestly can say that she impacts so many lives at our school, that she will "Go Down in History" even if it is just at our school, as the "Best English Teacher". I love that wherever her life takes her, her impacts on student academics and life at KHPES will always be a story to tell.
LifeChanger Chayanee seeks new ways to impact learners by sharing innovative insights with a diverse educator network. As Chayanee nurtures our youth, she simultaneously spearheads efforts to help teachers thrive. Recently I got to read Chayanee’s article about her NBCT journey that she calls her “odyssey” that was filled with hurdles and challenges. Her heartfelt story is an inspiration to me as I hope to follow her steadfast steps.
What is evident in every one of Chayanee Brooks’ efforts is her love and dedication to her students. She possesses an unwavering belief in them as she strives to shatter the limits life/situations/self-doubt has artificially placed upon them. Chayanee Brooks is truly a life changer.
Chayanee has been a participant and contributor to numerous Professional Development Opportunities that the Hawai?i State DOE has conducted related to both formative and summative assessments. She continues to be a valuable member of the Smarter Balanced Authoring Program as an ELA item author as well as the Performance Assessment Development Initiative. I recently worked with Chayanee to provide feedback on a course she spearheaded related to equitable grading practices. Not only did working on this with her truly demonstrate how passionate she is about supporting teaching and student learning but also her professionalism, ability to take initiative, take risks, collaborate, and her strong ability to give and receive feedback.
Chayanee Brooks is a dedicated AP English teacher, who continually focuses on improving her content knowledge and pedagogy. She attends training sessions presented by Hawai`i State DOE and those presented by College Board. She translates that life long learner attitude to her students at Kau.
As a former student of Mrs.Brooks, I can honestly say that she has changed my life and the way in which I perceive the world around me. One thing I will always remember is the first year we had online schooling due to the pandemic, Mrs.Brooks took this opportunity to distance her classes from the set school curriculum that we learn from a book. She created a more personalized, engaging curriculum that taught us about real world problems that were happening at the time, and created a safe space for students to voice their personal opinions without the intolerance of the internet. She always had a positive attitude, genuinely enjoys being a teacher, and always showed compassion for every individual student, something I desperately needed as the world was changing around me.
Chayanee has been a Mentor in the KKP CA Induction and Mentoring Program for many years. She is a wonderful mentor to new teachers at her school. She is never afraid to step up and support the program or her new teachers. It is a privilege to work besides Chayanee and it has always been a positive experience.
I'm currently taking a PD course that Chayanee is co-leading. I've also met her briefly through teacher groups that are held throughout our state. Chayanee demonstrates a passion for assessment and finding ways for students to be a part of the evaluation process. She also perseveres to continue to learn and grow with other educator. I'm excited to learn more from Chayanee through our PD course!
Ms. Brooks is a true teacher leader. She persevered through the process of earning National Board certification during the pandemic. Through this process she proved that she teaches to the highest standards in the teaching profession. In a blog recently, she shared the deep learning she gained in that process - reflecting on her teaching, assuring that she improved her teaching every day, making certain that each individual student received the care and attention they needed, driving equity across students who excelled and also those who had special learning needs. Voluntarily choosing to write a blog to help guide other teachers was a unique step that further helps Ms. Brooks to stand out from her peers. I commend her!
Mrs. Brooks has been the most outstanding teacher, roll model and inspiration for my daughter Morgan for the last two years. Chayanee's teaching style was very engaging, and truly challenged my daughter. I can honestly say that my child is a better student, and person due to her guidance. Morgan has commented that Mrs. Brooks is a teacher that she will remember fondly for the rest of her life.
I've worked with Chayanee as a colleague with the Hawaii State Teacher Fellows and every interaction with her has been inspiring. Her passion for the profession is evident in the work she does for the fellows and with her students. I enjoy listening to her speak as she brings in new insights and her experiences to the table. Chayanee is a true examples of a life long learner as she is constantly challenging and pushing herself so that she can provide the best experiences for her students. I enjoy learning from her.
I first met Chayanee when she was a new teacher in our complex area. Even then I could tell she would be an excellent teacher because of her passion for teaching and her ability to work with others. Through the years I have seen her grow into a teacher leader, taking part in creating and facilitating professional development and becoming a mentor for new teachers. I only see a bright future for this rising star!
We were fellow students in college, and throughout our time together Chayanee was an unfailingly bright and kind presence. Her determination also shone through as she graduated summa cum laude despite taking part in so many extracurricular activities. I'm very proud of her.
I met Chayanee through the Putlizer Center’s Teacher Fellowship, and she has been an amazing co-hort member. Through our weekly fellowship trainings, I have come to learn of her deep pedagogical knowledge and her commitment to her students. Chayanee consistently demonstrates what it means to be a life long learner and an educator who works for the best interests of her students.
I had the pleasure of working with Chayanee on multiple occasions, but the primary opportunity was with System 44- a pilot data analysis project language arts program.
I was extremely impressed with Chayanee’s professionalism by her organization and dedication to this undertaking. Chayanee displayed great success with both the technical and practical applications of the System 44 program with differentiated instruction targeted primarily to assist English-Language Learners. Furthermore, Chayanee utilized the program as an intervention tool to assist students enrolled in high school English classes requiring foundational reading skills, comprehension and writing instruction as well as through personalized learning technology.
Chayanee’s respect, dedication, compassion, and commitment for her students is demonstrated by her students’ academic and personal achievements.

As the Hawaii State Department of Education Specialist in charge of organizing and facilitating the Hawaii State Teacher Fellowship Program, I have had the honor of working with Chayanee Brooks since 2020. Chayanee was selected as a 2020-2022 fellow after a rigorous process of writing essays, submitting administrator and colleague recommendations, and engaging in an interview. Just by reading Chayanee's essays and interviewing her, I was immediately struck by her passion, dedication, and commitment to students, and her genuine desire to learn and collaborate with other educators to create authentic learning experiences for them.
After working closely with Chayanee for over a year, I have realized that in every space she's in, whether it be with students, teachers, legislators, or the superintendent, Chayanee brings curiosity, clarity, and expertise to the discussion. She asks the hard questions, brings in students' voices and perspectives, and advocates. Chayanee identifies challenges and impediments in our system and works actively to take action on solutions. For example, Chayanee noticed that secondary teachers needed more support in understanding Standards-Based grading and creating authentic assessment opportunities. She wrote and submitted a proposal for a 3-credit "Grading for Equity" course that teachers can take for reclassification (and a higher salary), and she will be teaching it this spring.
Chayanee is also a strong communicator and has written and published several education pieces in the last year. In her writing, she gives specific examples of strategies teachers can employ to make learning and assessment relevant. She has also led professional development sessions for beginning teachers across our state on how to support and grow critical thinking skills. Chayanee is constantly looking for opportunities to collaborate with others, stretch herself, and elevate student voice and experiences.
I was recently introduced to Chayanee and it was immediately apparent that she is the type of person who brings out the best in others. Her can-do attitude and attention to detail make a perfect combination to affect positive change.
Ms. Brooks' fresh pedagogical views about autonomous student-driven education was an eye-opener for a twenty-year veteran like me. When I questioned her about them, she was very clear and precise about exactly how to achieve successful outcomes, tailor-made for each individual student. Her insightful, innovative responses to my queries inspired me to challenge my own students to generate their own rubrics, demonstrate their utility, and hold them accountable. My supervising administrator was quite impressed with this new development and wrote a favorable evaluation about me on the Educator Effectiveness System. I am so grateful to Ms. Chayanee Brooks; thank you!
Mrs. Brooks is a thoughtful, sincere, and genuine teacher who cares about her students and their development as creative and passionate people both in and out of the classroom. As a lifelong learner, she continually engages in professional activities that enhance and improve her instructional methods to re-engage students in today's dynamic and challenging educational environment. She is a leader for our K-12 school, and currently serves as the Department Chair for grades 11-12, an instructional trainer in "Teaching on the Block," and leads our standards-based grading cohort. Additionally, she finds time to advise our Girls Who Code club and National Honor Society, and teaches traditional Thai dancing to interested students. In the classroom, you will always find her prepared and ready, and her students are engaged in important learning that is both meaningful and challenging. Most recently, one of her students presented to the entire school an amazing spoken word that she wrote in her native Spanish. There are so many more examples like this of her dedicated and passion to her students. Mrs. Brooks sets a great example for others to follow.

Being in the Fellows, I’ve only recently gotten to known Chayanee. Each interaction we have is inspiring and her passion for teaching, shines through the screen. She cares deeply about her students, but also about empowering other educators as well. Most recently, she invited me to take part in facilitating a course for educators. I never thought this would be something for me, but she’s given me the courage, ambition, and support to do so. You deserve this, girl! See you soon!

Chayanee has the family tradition of teaching in her heart. Her grandmother, who is now 93, was a teacher her whole career, and she is so proud of Chayanee's dedication and work on behalf of her students.

I am David Brooks's stepfather, and a retired educator from Washington State. I've known Chayanee Brooks since her marriage to David, and have always been impressed by the seriousness with which she approaches her career. She is always on the lookout for new things to incorporate into her classroom, and eager to discuss educational techniques with retired teachers like me and my wife. Her focus is always on helping her students grow. Teaching is not a job for Mrs. Brooks; it's an integral part of who she is.
Chayanee is spearheading a valuable professional learning opportunity for teachers that will positively affect thousands of students and has shown herself to be a creative and valuable teacher leader.
I've had the pleasure of working with Chayanee during the 2021-2022 school year (last year). Seeing how passionate she is about teaching and the commitment she has for her students. She is always there providing support and guidance to her students showing them that they are able to do the work. Reminding them to always do their best and ask for help when they need it. Chayanee lets her students know that her door is always open if they need anything. I've been able to witness that her students feel welcomed in entering her classroom (whether in person or on distance learning) and be able to express themselves freely. Her students were able to open up freely with their peers and with Mrs. Brooks to learn together as a class. The motivation , energy, and example she gives in the classroom shows that she really cares for each of her students and their success in school and also after high school.
Chayanee truly brings to life the phrase, “life long learner”. She is always looking for opportunities to grown and expand! She is a leader and a powerful student advocate!
I met Chayanee during the 2021-2022 school year when she contacted me for more information about our local Poetry Out Loud (POL) program. POL is a partnership of the National Endowment for the Arts, Poetry Foundation, and Hawai'i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and Honolulu Theatre for Youth that encourages high school students to learn about poetry by offering free educational materials and a dynamic recitation competition. Students select, memorize, and recite classic and contemporary poems, helping them to master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life.
It is rare to have a teacher contact us for more information, especially during pandemic school years. The fact that Chayanee took the initiative to get more information, stood out to me immediately. It is even more rare to have a teacher commit to running a POL contest at their classroom and/or school level, especially among our public school educators who have so much on their plates. We are thrilled that Chayanee will be working to organize an POL contest at Ka’u High School and sending their winner onto represent their school at this year's Hawai'i State finals!

Chayanee is deeply committed to her students and her profession. As her NBCT candidate support provider, I witnessed Chayanee?s diligence beyond the school day. She works hard to address her student?s individual needs, and those needs drive her instruction. She teaches with care and intention; her students are very fortunate to learn from her.
Ms. Chayanee Brooks takes her job as a teacher to heart. She kept me in the loop of my daughter's progress even during the very challenging Covid period. Her intervention played a significant role in getting my daughter back on track to graduate on time. I am very thankful for her assistance. She has demonstrated that she truly cares for her students and their success.
As far as I've known Mrs. Brooks, she has never once failed to push and encourage me to strive better during class. Whenever I would have a slightly difficult time on an assignment, Mrs. Brooks would take the time to talk it out with me and brainstorm ideas of ways that I could view the assignment differently. I personally have a very difficult time when it comes to the english subject, but when it comes to being in Mrs. Brooks' class, I would just like to thank her for influencing a slight change in my mindset of that subject. When I go to her class, I am always leaving with something new that we learned that day, along with many great memories. All in all Mrs. Brooks is a very enthusiastic person and does amazing at her job as a teacher.
As the AP Coordinator at Ka’u High School for over 5 years, I’ve had ample opportunity to observe Ms Brooks’ classroom and the performance of her students on end of year exams.
While nearly all students at this Title 1 school are native English speakers, pidgin English best describes their actual level of communication for the majority of our students. Through her example, as a non-native English speaker, her continuous demonstration of proper English grammar and vocabulary and love of reading, she has greatly elevated her students’ English skills, discussion and writing.
Chayanee is an exceedingly diligent person who carries that energy into the classroom when she is working at home as well as at school. I have see her work on online meeting and classes for hours on end with unwavering attention and engagement. She is super!
Chayanee has taught at Ka'u High for the past eight years. During that time, as the principal of the school, we have seen significant growth in our students and instructional practices across contents. Chayanee is a leader by modeling and sharing best practices. Her positive attitude and kindness promotes trust from students and her colleagues. Even if I had just met Mrs.Brooks this year I can see that she put's a lot of efforts into in her work and teaching my fellow classmates and I. She doesn't just pass out work and expect students to finish by themselves she makes sure her students fully understand the lessons. She drives and motivates her students to work their hardest. I had the privilege to work with Mrs. Brooks for a year at a small rural K-12 school. Chayanee and I began our Hawai'i teaching journey together as new teachers in the Kahua (culture-based comprehensive new teacher program). Over time I participated in several other rich professional development training opportunities with Chayanee. I always looked forward to hearing her feedback and insights. Throughout the school year, I observed Mrs. Brooks in her classroom on a few occasions. Chayanee routinely designs memorable learning experiences that genuinely empower students' voices as learners. Chayanee's instructional approach often integrates innovative ways for students to engage and grow as learners. As a teacher leader, Chayanee elevated the thinking of others through her practice, often taking the lead as teacher and action researcher, sharing her journey in the pursuit of teaching mastery. Chayanee's contributions have helped reshape the role and title of "teacher," empowering her peers to take on a broader part of becoming both practitioner and leader. In her, work Chayanee has helped support and build the professional expertise our students need and deserve.
Mrs. Chayanee Brooks strives daily for her students to do the very best of their abilities. She presents a well-balanced classroom setting, with ideal amounts of leasure and hard work. She truly cares for the wellbeing of her students. She is an insperation to her students, and does not rest until she has ensured the understanding of the topic in question in every one of her students. Chayanee is part of the Pulitzer Center’s 2021-2022 Teacher Fellowship on Journalism and Justice: Elevating Underreported Stories in the Classroom, where I am her Fellowship advisor. I am consistently grateful for and impressed by Chayanee’s dedication to her students and willingness to go above and beyond to share meaningful, resonant resources that empower them to share their voices and perspectives.
I hired Jee to work at NIVA International School in Bangkok Thailand. During the two years Jee worked at NIVA I was the Head of School. NIVA is a small school and I had the opportunity to observe her work in the classroom and on many activities at the school. Jee is an outstanding young teacher who is very talented. She is always well prepared, focuses her teaching on students in a way that they each feel valued. She was always willing to do whatever was needed to improve the school and her own skills.
I’m very grateful for Mrs. Brooks for all of the thing that she taught to me. As a teacher she was able to inspire her students and I am on of those students. I’m so thankful for her because she always help me whenever I need help for my classes and to my problems. We had a very meaningful memories during our class. Mrs.Brooks is always motivated her students ,and My life changed in a nice way because all of the thing I’ve learned from Mrs. Brooks. I want to give a appreciation and say thank you to her .
Chayanee and I worked together for two years in a small international school in Thailand. I’ve always known her to be professional and continually striving to grow in her practice. While we haven’t worked together in quite some time, it has been great to see her publications and how she shows her full commitment to her students.
I have so much to thank Mrs. Brooks for being my teacher. I'm grateful for all the things she has taught me, the memories we've made in class, the opportunities she provided, and so much more. I feel like I owe her so much as the value of the things I've learned in her class, but all I can give back is a big thank you!!
Ms. Brooks has dedicated herself to her passion of teaching to improve and motivate her students to reach their potential. Her dedication has led to numerous awards and recognitions that she is most deserving of. As a student of Mrs. Brooks, I can say that she is a great person and a great teacher, one who motivates and inspires. On many occasions in my time in this country, in this school I have felt incapable even of doing many things as much as in class or at home, Mrs. Brooks has been a very great source of inspiration for perseverance and she has not let me believe that I can't do anything I propose to do. Having Mrs. Brooks as my teacher has motivated me to improve myself as a person and as a student, it has truly changed my life in a very positive way.
While in a district administrative position I had the opportunity to participate with Chayanee in a grading cohort of teachers focused on grading. The cohort researched, discussed, planed and implemented competency based grading practices in their classrooms using an action research model. Chayanee was a school leader in this work. Her commitment, insights and willingness to not only change her practices but share her struggles and successes with colleagues demonstrates her professionalism in shifting not only her practices but the growth mindset of students as well as staff.
Mrs.brooks have helped me throughout my high school year . She have really motivated me everyday and have always lifted my sprit up whenever I am feeling down. She is honestly every helpful and is always willing to help others to succeed. She has helped me to succeed in high school even now while I am in college . Because of her I want to say thank you !
