Brian Copes was nominated by his colleague, Donald Elswick and multiple students.

"The innovation and learning that Mr. Copes brings to his instruction isn't limited to poorer countries. Other projects include the development of inexpensive aquatic wheelchairs for special needs students, developing a side-by-side bicycle that allows a handicapped student to ride beside an adult, and establishing a high-tech green energy competition in Alabama known as Electrathon. Forty teams from four states participate in the Alabama Electrathon.  He has also developed a 501c3 non-profit organization named SKY (Skilled Knowledgeable Youth) to expand STEM programs," said Elswick.

"He is the owner of Team Life Savers and he has given people many prosthetics in the past. He uses up his time making more and more prosthetics for others around the globe. Note that he doesn't just think of himself but he chooses to help these people in need and not many people would think of doing this," said one of his students.
