Donna Katafias was nominated by her colleague, Michele Albright.

Ms. Katafias is a vibrant, energetic teacher who loves her students. She teaches American history with enthusiasm that makes the kids love her class. She relates events in history to what's happening today so the kids can get a better feel for how previous generations were feeling in the situations they were going through.

Ms. Katafias also reads and has the kids reflect on Chicken Soup for the Soul stories. This helps them to get in touch with what's going on in their personal lives. It also helps them build empathy and understand other sides of a situation they haven't thought of.

Her Enrichment classes have made gifts for homeless people, including flannel blankets and hats made of yarn. They also clean up the litter around the school to beautify it. This year, the Enrichment students are tie-dying pillow cases and putting them on pillows for homeless people. One place where these will be given is the Cherry Street Mission in Toledo, Ohio.

Ms. Katafias is always looking to help fellow teachers and students any way that she can.  She is a fun-loving history buff who is housed in a petite body with long red hair. The students absolutely adore her.

"I am proud to call her my colleague and friend," said Albright.
