Music that Describes Shay

Shay Price was nominated by her colleague, Thomas Griffin.

“The person who says it cannot be done should not interrupt the person doing it” — Chinese Proverb

Fighting cancer, earning a doctoral degree, homeschooling an autistic daughter, and raising achievement in an urban high school offering hybrid instruction during COVID. Any one of these tasks could overwhelm the average person, but Dr. Price conquered them all this past school year. She continues to kick cancer to the curb while taking Maple Heights High School to the next level of success.

All too often, urban students are labeled as lazy, unmotivated, and helpless because of their demographic profiles. By bestowing high expectations and levels of trust upon her students, Dr. Price constantly reassures them that they have what it takes to achieve their goals and succeed in life. To those who doubt that one person can make a difference in the lives of countless students, stand back. Dr. Price has a whole generation of scholars who want to succeed, and she is busy helping them achieve it.

Helping students succeed has been Dr. Price's mission for over two decades as an educator. As an experienced high school principal in a urban district, she is constantly “marketing” education, not only to her own scholars, but to the entire community in which she resides. Dr. Price has increased countless achievement levels within her high school and has been instrumental in obtaining 100% industry credentials for numerous career-technical programs offered in her building. She has been powerful in motivating students to take their educational careers seriously by demanding high levels of respect and expectations from each scholar.

Dr. Price wears many hats simultaneously while leading an urban school to its highest level of success. As a strong leader, she sets the level of expectation for the entire organization. Her philosophy is that every student, regardless of their background, has the right to an education based on high standards and achievement. Unfortunately, too many schools are failing an entire generation of students who want to learn. As an educational leader, she not only makes sure that every student is given the education they're inherently due, but promotes an educational environment conducive to the facilitation of lifelong learning and critical thinking.

In addition to helping all students succeed, Dr. Price is imperative in her belief that the effective leader also supports and encourages her faculty and staff. Without her constant enthusiasm for life and dedication to the success of all students, teaching loses its vitality and, subsequently, its value. She is a dynamic and determined administrator who possess exemplary leadership skills defined by her ability to encourage teamwork, delegate responsibilities, and allow all participants in the process to see how their input and talents have affected the outcome. During COVID, while maintaining a full time job, battling cancer, and homeschooling her own autistic daughter, Dr. Price obtained her doctorate in education to meet both a personal goal and a professional one. It is important to Dr. Price that her students are aware that she values education – her own as well as theirs.

"I am confident that her success as a principal will allow her to continue accomplishing even more goals she has set for herself, her staff, and her students while making herself a viable component in the education of the democracy of the future. There is not another LifeChanger who would represent your award in a more positive manner. It is with great pleasure that I nominate to you, Dr. Shay Price," said Griffin.

I don’t even know where to begin! I just know that Shay is definitely a part of the reason I am where I am in my life today and I am the woman who am today. Next to my mom, she was the next best positive role model that I had to look up to and motivated me to strive for better. From the classroom to the dance field, Shay has helped mold me to be the woman that I wanted to become and saw for myself and for that, I am so grateful. She has always sacrificed her time, life, and own money at times to make sure her students were good and that we had what we need. Especially her dance girls. I’m so thankful to have met her and still have the opportunity to connect with her in this lifetime. She’s definitely a life changer.

There’s so much that can be said about this individual. Yes, everything written in the entry is correct. But even with all those wonderful things, there are so many more countless accolades that can be given. Being a principal, a mom, a leader, a sister, a daughter, a friend all seem to come easy to her. She has fought adversity, stereotypes and cancer with the kind of prowess that only a select few have. There’s never a moment in time where the well-being of someone else is not on her mind. So when they say, “the greatest of these is love” that’s the MOST impressive attitude. A love for people. A love that drives everything she does, a love that surrounds everyone she comes in contact with. So if anyone asks why she deserves to be named with this prestigious honor, then it’s because of the love she has for humanity. A love so deep that she is willing to give so much of herself every single day to ensure that others’ lives are changed just by sheer connection.

I can think of no one more fitting for the title LifeChanger of the Year than Dr. Shay Price. Deserving is an understatement because her kind of excellence is uniquely embedded into her personality, and it shows up in her daily life and interactions with others. She became my mentor when I was fifteen years old, over fifteen years ago. She was my teacher and dance coach in Georgia. I value our relationship and how it has matured over the years knowing that personally or professionally, I have her support and love. I am not the only one by far. I've always been in awe of how many lives she touches and how many hats she wears. Somehow, she manages to give one hundred percent of herself to her friends, family, and community all at the same time. I've witnessed her phone ringing back-to-back while she's home with her family about putting out various fires, recommendations or advice, and even dealing with tragedy surrounding her students. She always answers the call. She is never off the clock as an ingrained and indispensable member of her community, and she meets that charge, as well as her personal battles, with unimaginable grace. It's not just who she is now, it's who she's always been -- caring, relatable, impactful, festive, fun, encouraging, generous, phenomenally woman, exceptionally human. I love her dearly.

Dr. Price is an amazing Educator! She gives hundred percent of her heart to the students and staff of Maple Heights High School! Her leadership and support has transformed the culture and climate of our school building. She is a Life-Changer!

Tommia Brookins Posted over a year ago

Dr. Price started as my mentor, but in her fashion, she became family. I met her in high school as an unmotivated sophomore with all the potential in the world, but no direction. She labored with me (yes labored because I was no easy task), & my life is forever changed due to her presence. She was the first person that noticed my gift of writing & now I’m a published author! A presence such as hers is what’s missing in so many of our children’s lives. I’m a living witness that parents can’t do it alone. Our schools need professionals that stand in the gaps that parents can’t, & she does just that. Her life’s work has inspired the work of so many others & I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this honor!

Corwyn Collier Posted over a year ago

I couldn’t imagine working for a better principal. Dr. Price is the spark of Maple Heights that burns with the passion of excellence. Keep being great and inspiring all those around you.

Karonda Foster Mitchell Posted over a year ago

I have the honor of being one of the mentees of Dr. Price. I met her in 2005 and my life hasn’t been the same. Dr. Price was my dance coach, educator, and mentor. She instilled values in me that I hold for a lifetime. My undaunted spirit was developed under her mentorship. The impact that she has on my life is invaluable; there is nothing I could every do to repay her. Dr. Price has always told me to “Pay it forward” and that’s what I intend to do. Upon completion of my Bachelor’s Degree in Math, I continued my education and obtained my masters & PhD in Curriculum & Instruction. I currently coach and mentor young ladies. The only way that I know to pay it forward is to give young ladies the same values that Dr. Price gave me!
