Music that Describes Phyllis

Phyllis Yoder was nominated by her colleague, Karen Currie.

Most schools have a nurse who takes loving care of sick and injured children, but Ms. Yoder goes above and beyond in so many ways. She truly has been a LifeChanger for the Huron Learning Center and the Huron Intermediate School District.

The Huron Learning Center serves children with significant disabilities and challenges, including some who are medically fragile and have multiple medical complications. Ms. Yoder approaches each student, regardless of age or ability, with respect and compassion. She responds quickly to those in need, and her calm demeanor helps everyone to be reassured that the correct steps will be taken for each child's unique needs.

Ms. Yoder also coordinates her school's medical emergency response team. She plans unannounced, scenario-based drills that have helped this team to feel confident in their ability to respond to any emergency. Under her guidance, they have grown their skills.

In addition to all the typical tasks that a school nurse handles each week, Ms. Yoder also coordinates the Project Find/Build Up/Early On evaluations. She guides parents of young children through the process of determining if the child has special needs. It can be an emotionally difficult time for families, but Ms. Yoder's compassionate nature and wealth of knowledge about child development and service options is reassuring for families.

Ms. Yoder coordinates wellness activities for the staff and shares information on exercise, nutrition, healthy habits, vaccinations, and more. She models healthy living without being preachy or condescending. She is well-respected, and the staff value her perspective and knowledge. Her personality is enviable; she is fun, kind, compassionate, competent, and conscientious.

"I’ll end with an example that sums up Phyllis," said Currie. "Each spring, on School Nurse Appreciation Day, Phyllis cooks a lunch for our entire staff of about 100 people.  Instead of us thanking HER for all she does, she thanks all of us for the opportunity to be an integral part of the school community.  It’s always delicious, home-made, healthy, and served with a beaming smile and a sense of humor.  She has been a LifeChanger for the students and staff of the Huron Learning Center.

P.S - The playlist songs are all her daughter's band. She is their biggest fan!

I was fortunate enough to be part of the interviewing team when Phyllis applied for the school nurse position and it was obvious at that point that she would be one of the best hires this organization has made! Her skills go far beyond that of a school nurse and her value to our organization is immeasurable. She not only looks after the health and welfare of staff and students, she coordinates our early intervention program, is a partner in school safety issues/activities, provides CPR/First Aid training to staff, plans and executes emergency drills and is an overall trusted confidant to so many people. Phyllis never gets rattled. She is the calm in the storm and never judges people for their actions/words in a stressful moment. Throughout the year Phyllis is known for providing wonderful food/meals for staff-an example of her selflessness that supports a positive work culture. She is one of the most decent human beings I know and frankly, I aspire to be like her and feel so blessed to have worked with her for so many years. Phyllis has certainly been a positive "life changer" to this organization!

Phyllis has truly been a "life changer" for our school. She has been serving students and staff over 20 years with a joyful spirit and tremendous skill. I was a teacher at the Huron Learning Center, a school for students with significant disabilities, before a school nurse was hired to care for the unique medical needs of our students. Phyllis was the perfect person to serve children with disabilities and their families who were facing the reality of very challenging needs presented by their beloved children. Her service was transformational for the children, parents and teaching staff as well. Phyllis grew in this role, taking on professional development, mental health issues, training staff for emergency response and providing medical intake for infants and young children who are suspected of having a disability. Phyllis has shared her expertise with other school nurses within the county, and was selected by her colleagues to serve as the President of Michigan Association of School Nurses. Phyllis's most remarkable attribute is her upbeat personality and generous spirit. She gives her best to all, and even in times of crisis, those around her feel better because of her calm demeanor and medical competence. The trust families have in her and the respect she has earned through years of energetic service truly have been life changing to our entire district. She has made the school environment safer, healthier and averted crisis many times over through her dedication to student health.

Phyllis is such a kind and knowledgeable soul! She has been a great support during my 17 year career with HISD. I have worked with Phyllis professionally on school projects and also with my sons through the Early On Program as they were both NICU babies and experienced delays. Phyllis is always upbeat and gentle in her approach and acknowledges both sides of a situation when presenting options. I've also been blessed with her loved of cooking and scrapbooking and appreciate her down to earth personality. Phyllis is an amazing person to work with. While all of us mortals have "bad days" I have never seen Phyllis have one. She is always positive, has a smile on her face, is happy to help, and I haven't even mentioned her amazing cooking that she blesses all that work with her with. While I see her far less than I have in the past, it is always a pleasure to interact and work with her. She cares so deeply about the students and staff and it shows every single day with every single student or staff member!! Thank you Phyllis for everything you do!!

Jenni Trusock Posted over a year ago

Phyllis is amazing. I don't know all the things she does for students, except that she seems to be everywhere :-) Even though being school nurse in a building full of students with special needs, many medical, is a big job, Phyllis still goes above and beyond to care for the health and wellness of staff. She certifies staff in CPR, and she arranges with the health department each year to bring a flu shot clinic into the building so staff (and their adult family members) only need to walk down the hall. Phyllis came in early one day a week for all of last year to offer rapid-response COVID testing every Monday, and she continues to offer testing to staff on-site by appointment. Phyllis has done so many things over the year to care for staff health, depending on current needs. Sometimes she hosts Tabata exercise programs after school, some years she offers a Winter Wellness "Biggest Loser" weight loss challenge, and more recently, she's focused on sharing mental health and stress resources. And Phyllis has a great sense of humor. Blood-borne pathogen training is a staff requirement every year. Many of our trainings are online, but the administration rotates which trainings we get "live" each year. I always look forward to Phyllis's turn, because it's fun and interesting, like a race for teams to clean up a mock spill of bodily fluids. And we'll never forget that "If it's wet and sticky and it's not yours, don't touch it!" I always smile when I see Phyllis in the hallway, and I know it's going to be a good day if I walk into the break room and see a delicious and healthy snack made by Phyllis. Thanks, Phyllis, for everything you do!
