Ambika Dani was nominated by her husband, Pranav Penninti. 

"As Ambika's husband, I've had the fortune of being a fly on the wall to her career in education," explains Penninit. "She started as a teacher at a public school in the Bronx. Later, she led the development of an SAT Math product at UWorld before moving on to her most recent and most extraordinary endeavor: founding Promesa Academy Charter School, a K-5 school in San Antonio, TX at the age of 29."

When she was 15, Mrs. Dani started a tutoring group for children in her hometown of Lagos, Nigeria. The group quickly swelled from a handful of kids to groups of 20+. From this point on, she always hoped to work towards changing the outcomes of children from disadvantaged backgrounds. She wanted to help reduce some of the inequity inherent in where a child is born. She truly believes that every child should have the opportunity to realize their academic ambitions. This has been the foundational pillar driving her work. She was adamant that she wanted to serve the most underserved area in San Antonio and opened her school in the poorest zip code in the city: 78207.

It's been incredible to see her growth as a leader in her roles as founder, superintendent, and principal since the inception of the school. She has navigated the numerous challenges of opening a school during an unprecedented pandemic with grace and aplomb. During the first year of Promesa, she was faced with the task of concurrently running a virtual school. She successfully developed a strong infrastructure for her virtual learners. At the start of the 2021-2022 school year, in the face of uncertainty of whether virtual learning would be funded by the state government, she made the decision to continue virtual learning for parents who opted to continue. Despite the risk of potentially losing government funding, she made this decision in order to support families who did not feel comfortable sending their children back to school in the current health climate. Every major decision that she has made when it comes to fundraising, grant applications, budgeting, and policy has always been done with the thought of her students first.

"Perhaps more important than these large-scale decisions are the lengths that she has gone to do the little things that have helped create the culture that permeates Promesa: one of love and unwavering support of her students, families, and teachers," said Penninti. "Far from being an administrative figure in the shadows, she shows up to campus every day and is always willing to do whatever is necessary to support her students and teachers. She is truly invested in each individual child’s success, both academically and emotionally. The majority of her day is spent in direct interaction with students in a multitude of different settings. Her administrative work is often left for when she comes home, where she works well into the night."

In a year of increasing burden on teachers with additional pandemic-related challenges, Mrs. Dani has sought to show how much she appreciates her staff through weekly self-paid team lunches, birthday presents for every teacher, and impromptu scavenger hunts/challenges, all in the spirit of celebrating her well-deserving team.

"Seeing what she has accomplished at such a young age, particularly in the past several years with the creation of Promesa, has been astounding. Her experiences through such varied roles in the education world have given her a unique perspective and skill set. They've allowed her to bring her vision of what education should look like for children in their most formative years to fruition. Above everything, she has created an environment where her children feel safe, loved, and valued, which is what she has always believed is the foundation for academic and personal growth. Her work at Promesa is reflective of the type of person she is in all aspects of her life. Ambika has changed so many lives over the last several years, and I can’t think of a more genuine, deserving individual to be recognized with this great award," said Penninti.
