Barbara Yarbrough was nominated by her colleague, David Cook.
Barbara Jean Bolden Yarbrough is a LifeChanger and an educator in the truest sense of the words. She’s the fairy godmother of South Elementary School, and an icon in Midland, TX, where she has served since 1959. She began at Carver Junior/Senior Colored High School, which was a segregated black high school, and continued to elementary school. From that point, she would have a storied career, impacting the lives of children and the community until 1996, when she “retired.” For Ms. Yarbrough, retirement actually meant transitioning from the classroom to the role of parent liaison, where she serves through the present day.
“In my 18 years serving as the counselor at South, I watched and participated with Ms. Yarbrough as she cared for children on their worst days and celebrated with them on their best days,” said Cook. “Ms. Yarbrough remembers people. She actually looks at them and into them, seeing the best person that they are in spite of whatever morass in which they might currently find themselves. She visits houses and sees people on the street.”
Ms. Yarbrough calls people by name - remembering them, sometimes, from a classroom 50 years ago - and asks about their lives and families. She remembers their parents, their families, and their triumphs and tragedies. People are valuable and important to her. Every former and current student and staff member knows that they can contact her when someone dies, when they’re in trouble, or when they have that special day. They call, and Ms. Yarbrough responds. She loves deeply and places that love into action each and every day, impacting this generation. At almost 86 years old, she greets children daily outside of her campus. She ensures that they have food in their house, clothing and shoes at the ready, and most importantly, an advocate who unconditionally supports and values them as they are.
“I eventually moved to serve at another school,” said Cook. “I will never leave the memories of, or the friendship with, my dear friend. She is a grandmother to my child (and many, many others), a mentor to myself and my wife, and a supporter of all things good in our city. Whether you are at South Elementary, Midland High School, or shopping at HEB, Barbara is visible, active, and involved in the life and blood of our city. She is essential. She is beloved. She is good. We in this city love her and are better for her.”
Ms. Yarbrough was born on August 29th, 1935 in Franklin, Louisiana. She struggled throughout her childhood. Her mother entered the hospital when she was eight and died when she was nine years old. Her father was grief-stricken and became an alcoholic.
“I understood later why my father was labeled, back then, as a wino,” said Yarbrough. “At the time, however, I knew only that I had to care for my brother’s basic needs, as well as my own.”
As a result of her mother’s hospitalization and death, Ms. Yarbrough and her brother became homeless. They lived on the street after this, looking for food and shelter. They remained homeless for five years, spending either the night or short periods of time in thirteen places. One of those places was with her grandfather and his sister, Sarah.
“My grandfather was an apprentice to the blacksmith on a slave plantation (but he was never a slave),” said Yarbrough. “Sarah was a former house slave, and she taught me to read.”
Although this time was challenging, Ms. Yarbrough felt grateful because her mother, her father’s aunt (Sarah), and her father’s oldest sister stressed the importance of education. This would drive her to learn, even through the barest times on the street. According to Ms. Yarbrough, school has always been the most exciting place to spend her day, from her time on the street to the present day.
“School saved me,” said Yarbrough. “It was always the same. It had the structure that I needed. School had the kind of teachers who reached past my dirty body and past my anger to reach Barbara, and they wouldn’t let go.”
During her childhood, Ms. Yarbrough was an avid softball player, bowler, and cook. Her brother played with B.B. King as the band leader, and she not only made food for the band when they came to town, but she often drove or flew to tour locations to cook for them.
After graduating high school, Ms. Yarbrough would go on to attend Texas Southern University, graduating in 1959 with a Bachelor’s degree in art education. She went to work at Carver Junior/Senior Colored High School for several years as an art teacher. During this time, she served as a coach for the girls’ tennis and boys’ basketball teams. She also served as band chaperone and a sponsor for the junior class.
In 1966, she transitioned to elementary education and taught preschool and first grade for several years. During this time, she also completed her graduate studies at the University of Texas, Texas Tech, and Sul-Ross State University. She received training in content mastery and the Accelerated Schools model.
In 1972, she went back into the art education field, taking on the role of art teacher at Ben Milam Elementary School. A year later, she moved to Pease/South Elementary to serve as a sixth grade art teacher. Ms. Yarbrough stayed in this role until her “retirement” in 1996.

At the school level, Ms. Yarbrough’s a PASS Class group leader and CEIC member at Midland Freshman High School. She also presents training on Shaken Baby/SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) for teenage mothers at Coleman High School.
Out of all her commitments, there are a few that Ms.Yarbrough’s is most proud of. Since 1977, she has volunteered for her district’s Friday Night Football games as a ticket taker, badge checker, and elevator guard. Only authorized personnel are allowed to take the elevator, and Ms. Yarbrough takes her role seriously.
Ms. Yarbrough has also run the Beans with Barbara young adult mentoring group since 1998. Finally, she is the owner and operator of Ask Barbara.
Outside of work and volunteering, Ms. Yarbrough loves to spend time with her family, which includes a son, Frank, and three grandchildren, Ember, Frank, and Shawntal. She’s also a proud cancer survivor.
For all her achievements, Ms. Yarbrough had an elementary school in Midland ISD named after her in 2015.

I am one of the many lucky students that had the pleasure of having Barbara Yarbrough as a teacher. She was truly one of my favorite teachers and really cared about her students. Both of my parents are/were also teachers in Midland and they, too, hold her in high regard. I was in her class in the mid 1980's and still have fond memories of being in her classroom. I am a software engineer today and at the time in her class I got to learn alot by helping her setup and use some of the first computers she had begun using in her classroom. To this day, I still use tips and tricks that I learned throughout my schooling in Midland. I am sooooo proud of Barbara for continuing to serve the Midland community for all these years. I met her the 1977-1978 school year. I was in 6th grade and was bussed to South elementary. She wasn’t my teacher but has remembered me ever since.
Many years later I taught at Abel Junior high and she would stop in on my class occasionally when she was at Abel. Even the kids then loved her and would get really excited to see her. She probably impacted more students lives than any teacher I ever had or worked with. Truly amazing lady.

Unfortunately for me, I was the only one in my immediate family to not be one of her students, but that never stopped her from taking a special interest in me. To this day, she is a much trusted mentor for me as a music educator and civil rights advocate in Midland. There are very few long-time Midlanders who have not been impacted in some way by Barbara Yarbrough. Considering the scope of this award, I cannot imagine anyone more worthy of such an honor than Mrs. Barbara Yarbrough!

Standing next to a legend...you can feel the love and reputation of Ms. Yarbrough. She is so humble but honest. I have had the pleasure of interacting with her many times in MISD. Her wisdom is one you want to capture and keep for the hard days. She has stamina and grit. She has chosen education as a life path. She continues to serve and love the students at South Elementary. That support does not stop there. She will talk to and support any educator who want to learn from her. The world needs more Ms. Yarbroughs.
I met Mrs. Yarbrough when I moved to Midland in 2006 to work as the Fine Arts Director for the school district. She was friendly, opinionated and FULL of information about the history and development of Midland ISD. I found her to be a valuable resource and a fount of enthusiasm. She continues to inspire me and give me hope.
In public education, people talk a lot about doing what’s “best for kids.” And yet we see decisions made repeatedly based on what is easiest for adults, rather what is actually “best for kids.” Mrs. Yarbrough does not tolerate on this issue. She walks the walk and talks the talk when it comes to words and actions that are truly “best for kids.” Her “kids” have included mayors, congressmen, business men and educators. She will tell any and all of us what we need to hear. She has influence in this district and in this community and she wields it with authority and compassion. She tells it like it is.
I am proud to call her my friend. I am proud to know someone with the kind of loyalty, integrity and grit that she exhibits every day in every way. She is a voice of reason and a voice of revolution. We need both.

Ms. Yarbrough is not only a fixture in Midland ISD she is what every educator should strive to be. She has a heart for kids and a passion for learning. She understands the value of education and will not be deterred in her quest to make sure every child in her sphere of influence receives the education they deserve to be successful. Her dedication is unmatched and she will not tolerate excuses or allow obstacles to get in her way of achieving her goals for students. What can you say about an amazing /educator/friend/ master teacher.....that hasn't been said already? Ms. Yarbrough has been a shining light in our district. The love and care she has for students speaks volumes of her character and role as an educator. What I love about Barbra is she is not afraid to speak her mind to protect the youth or our district. I first met Ms. Yarbrough as the silent identical twin student in Pre-K/Kindergarten at Crockett Elementary. Her commitment held true to not only my education advancement, but for me to understand my value and voice in a world of uncertainty. Ms. Yarbrough made it was evident to me as a 4-5 year old that my life mattered. Something as simple as bringing newspaper to cover the puddle when I had wet my pants to that sound of love in her strong voice later established my self worth in a world that said the opposite. I came from a low social economical family of love yet my early years with Ms. Yarbrough gave me a peek at a bigger world. When she looked at me with those eyes of determination I knew I could depend on her and everyday I would learn more, accomplish more and be more than I could imagine. Mrs. Yarbrough is an inspiration to many educators in our community, including me. She has dedicated her life to educating the children in our community and began her career when Midland was just beginning to desegregate its schools. One award that I did not see mentioned is the naming of one of our newest elementary schools after her. Not many teachers have schools named after them, but Mrs. Yarbrough does.

Barbara knows everyone in our town, and stops to greet each and everyone as though they were a beloved former student. Not one person is outside her realm of love. She is a winner in the hearts of all, and all are a winner in her heart.
I first met Miss Yarbrough through my husbands delightful stories of her. He would talk about her all the time. Then i finally met her face to face through a company i used to work for when we did teacher appreciation luncheons for South Elementary. Once she found out who my husband was she told me stories of him in school LOL. She is such an amazing woman so full of life and history. She came to our; Church Greater Ideal Baptist Church, and spoke , it was Awe inspiring everyone was truly listening to what she had to say. I love listening to her stories it tells of her character and strength. I had not seen her in a while and had the chance to be in her presence again during the height of the pandemic I volunteered to help with a food pantry. She, I and another friend were talking and she asked what did I do, I told her I like working with computers. She said, " come work for the school district." I actually thought nothing of it at the time because my thinking was I need a degree of which I did not have. I finally just applied and low and behold i am here working for MISD because of Ms Yarbrough. Love her dearly.

Mrs. Yarbrough was one of my professors at UTPB. I was in the Education Department and I wanted to be a teacher. She taught practical information on how to do the job. The amazing thing is her college class never ended. I have been teaching for almost 2 decades.. Every time I see Barbara around Midland she stops to listen to any classroom problem I may be having and offers practical ideas on how to love and teach students effectively. She then asks what is going well and we celebrate the wins! She is an amazing educator and an even more amazing person! My career, all the students I have taught, and my life have been blessed by her love and support.!
I was blessed to get to work with Mrs. Yarbrough. I have never met another educator who has her influence. She has the respect of several generations of families. Her love for the kids and families is beyond anyone I have met.
If a student needs support she knows someone in the community who can make it happen. If a family needs help she can make it happen.
She is also very supportive of the classroom teachers. She provides guidance from her years of experience.
The students and families are so blessed to have her in their life. All schools need a Mrs. Yarbrough.
My husband, kids, and I moved to Midland in 2014. We were walking into a high school football game when Ms. Yarbrough came up to us and said, "What's your name? You're new here!" She was right, we were! We visited with her and left her presence realizing she was someone special in this community. That's all it took, one night at a football game to feel like we were friends. From that point on, we stop and visit every time we see her out and about. I love that she knows everyone and makes you feel valued. She is definitely deserving of this award!
Mrs. Yarbrough is an amazing woman. I've had the pleasure to talk with her and see her in action at South Elementary during Summer School. She is always present and has a way with people. I admire her drive and dedication! There is no one more deserving to receive this award than Barbara.

You are truly an inspiration to the students and staff of MISD. Throughout the years you have touched the lives of those with a never ending attitude that is second to none. As a parent and an employee you touched my own children in a way they will never forget. You touched my parents as well. Burnet Elementary is where I first met you with both my daughters having you as a teacher. Your influence has reigned true throughout their lives. Your never changing attitude towards the betterment of a child's life and their education is astounding. Your positive attitude has made such an impact not only in the students but all the staff whose lives you touched. It's an honor to have met such a loving and caring lady such as you. I wouldn't have wanted a more caring and loving person in my childrens lives. Strict AMEN! Mrs. Yarbrough became a big part of my family not only to my children but to myself and my parents. Ms. Yarbrough is an amazing educator! I had the pleasure of working with her for 6 years at South Elementary. I can truly say that she knew her "Why" for teaching children. It takes a very special type of person to dedicate their life to teaching children of all ages. She has set a high standard for all educators to live up to. We need more educators like Ms. Yarbrough teaching our kids and grandkids. A true God sent Inspiration!!

Mrs. Yarbrough is a giver to our kids and to our community. She is a treasure! I have been employed with the district for many years and although I have never had the pleasure of working with her at any of the campuses but have known her for many of the years that I have been employed with MISD. I mentored a student that attended South a couple of years and I got to see her every week, in the halls talking to the students, advising them, making sure they were getting to their classes. She made her presence known and it was obvious the students loved her and respected her "tell it like it is" authority, who is a role model for all and a difference maker!

Ms. Yarbrough has positively impacted the lives of thousands of students and parents in MISD for over 40 years. It is hard to think of anyone more deserving of this honor.
Miss Yarbrough, was my neighbor for many year's her and my mother were really good friends before my mother passed. Still to this day she calls me "Little Baby" which is the name she gave me early on, even still to this day she gives me wisdom and we work every close on home visits and getting students to attend school who have attendance issues. Myself and a couple of friends many years ago would go to Miss Yarbrough's house for "Beans with Barbara' where she would talk with us on how to conduct ourselves in the public. She is my inspiration to keep pushing forward.
Ms. Yarbrough is truly a one of a kind! She has left an immeasurable mark on the lives of the children and community of Midland for over 40 years. I can think of no other that is more deserving than she for this honor.
I did not begin my 6th grade year in Mrs. Yarbrough's class. Six weeks into the school year, things were not working out with my current teacher. My mother, wanting to make my 6th grade year the best it could be, began to ask around about the 6th grade teachers there at South Elementary. Mrs. Yarbrough's name continued to come up so my mom reached out. My mom talks about her fondest memory of Mrs. Yarbrough being the time when she went up to the school (which was at dismissal) to speak to her about moving me into her class. Not missing a beat, Mrs. Yarbrough held an impromptu parent conference right there in the crosswalk as she directed bus traffic. The next Monday, I was placed in her class and it was the absolute best decision that could of been made for me as a student. Not only was it my best academic year but Mrs. Yarbrough is the reason I myself wanted to become a teacher. I now get to honor her everyday as I work at the school, Yarbrough Elementary. Mrs. Yarbrough made an everlasting impression on my life and is my all time favorite teacher!

There we were, the first year “Cluster Kids” climbing onto the bus on the first day of school.
Not one of us knew what to expect as we traveled across town to our 6-grade school, South Elementary. In the bus monitor seat was a young woman who would change many of our lives forever.
Our year at South was an experience that that few could forget. We made so many new friends, as we were now mixed with two other schools. We also had new teachers, such as Barbara Yarbough (the young woman from our bus). Little did we know how much she and South Elementary would influence the choices we would make in life.
I learned that year that good character will get you far in life. The way you treat others tells a lot about your character, therefore I learned how to treat others well and to behave in school and in public because you never know who is watching.
It was that lone year I spent at South Elementary in the homeroom of Mrs. Yarbrough that I realized that I too, wanted to become a teacher in hopes of making a difference in young lives.
To this day, she calls, comes to the funerals of her former students' family members, and occasionally pops in my classroom with stories for my students, even bringing her homemade butter biscuits.

Barbara has always been like family to us, she taught my kids and my grandkids, we worked together for 11 years at South Elem. We had such good times, she treated my kids like grandkids they loved her enough to call her grandma so did my grandkids. Barbara never forgets a name or a face. I know she made a difference in lots of kids lives. Love her.
Ms. Yarbrough is a true definition of a community hero! Since day one that I met her she showed me her firm character and that she stands up in what she believes in. On day one I crossed the street to the main entrance and she flagged me down and made me use the crosswalk, she did explain to why and I understood and respected her efforts. Over the last school year she has given me wisdom in every conversation I've had with her. I see her working all the time at South and staying active in community projects. I love how she waves at all the kids on a daily basis. She is a true role model for us all!!
Mrs. Yarbrough was my 6th grade teacher at South back in the 80’s. She taught my brothers as well. She is such an amazing lady and is so deserving of this award! Like everyone has said, she remembers your name and everyone else’s. She is a blessing to know and one of the reasons I became an educator myself. She makes you feel special and she’s such an inspirational woman. My family adores her!
If you have not had the pleasure of meeting this woman in person, do so. She is such an amazing person. She is "rough" around the edges but is by far the BEST thing that has ever happened to education since the 1960's when she started to teach. Her struggle and stories are so inspiring and should be published somewhere for future generations to admire.

6th grade year was one of my best and most influential years and I owe it to Mrs. Yarbrough. She understood what I needed to grow and gave me the freedom to, especially in art and literature. I will never forget her wisdom or her candid one on one talks of football games. I will never forget her walks. She is a blessing and we were all blessed to have her in our lives.

Mrs. Yarbrough is one of the best teachers I've ever had. She's not only a kind soul and a wonderful person but has been very influential in many people's lives, including mine. I remember the first day of class when she said "Ill show you the respect you show me" and she held true to that. To this day I regard her not only a mentor but also a good friend. I’ve been blessed to get to know Ms Yarborough working the high school football games and she’s an exceptional woman. She knows or has taught most of Midland and she lives them all! And everyone that has been taught or helped by this wonderful lady come by and speak to her and give her a hug. Her memory is way better than mine. She comes to work whether it’s rain or shine. I’m blessed to have gotten to know this woman!
Ms. Yarborough was my husband's teacher! He introduced me to her years ago, after we were married. To this day, even though I wasn't a student in her classroom, she remembers me by name and asks about him. We saw her in HEB one day and she just looked at our oldest and said, "Mmmhmm. Yep, that's Tommy Dulin's boy right there!" We gave her a Bible cover for her birthday one year. She tells me that she thinks of us every time she opens her bible! She remembers YOU and you definitely remember her! Just her name, if you ask most anyone that has grown up in Midland about her you'll get some stories that'll make you laugh and wish the world was like it used to be! She believes in discipline and compassion! She deserves this award because she's earned it!
Amazing person. I saw her at the grocery store this weekend. Ahead of me were three tweens/teens... she spoke to all three of them by name, they straightened their posture (not thatthey were misbehaving, but that's what you do when someone you admire speaks to you), called her by name, and everyone was all smiles. Then she looked at me, asked about my kids, my wife and then me. I straightened my posture and was all smiles too. There is not a place in this town where Ms Yarborough is not greeted by generations of people. I would almost think it would be exhausting, but for her it must be rewarding knowing how many lives she has touched. God bless Ms Yarborough.

Barbara was my favorite teacher in elementary school. She made learning fun and exciting for all kids. I struggled with learning due to epilepsy during the time she taught me with love and patience for all the students the same. I have seen her here and there since and she has met my son and always treats him like he is one of her students. I think she is a wonderful lady. She did nickname me in school “meany weanie”which my mother never had forgot, there was a sorry with that but it was in grade school. I wish Barbara all the Best she was a life changer for me and many others.
Love Mrs. Yarbrough! Meet her at South Elementary when I went there about 20+ years ago. Everyone in my family knows her, what a wonderful person she is, and all the wonderful things she has done for low income families and all of our community. She’s not only a roll model, but has a heart of gold for helping people in need.
Even though I attended South Elementary in 1953 before Barbara Yarbrough came to South I did not meet her until years later. I probably met her in the late ‘70’s in my retail office supply business in Midland. I met her again in the early 2000’s while she was having jury duty when I was a Bailiff for the 238th District Court in Midland. We both remembered each other and developed a long friendship. I became a substitute teacher for MISD after I retired from everything and went to South Elementary one morning to fill in for an absent teacher. My habit was to dress in a long sleeve dress shirt with a tie, a blazer sports coat, and a Panama hat. The first person I saw was Barbara Yarbrough and she smiled from ear to ear and was so happy to see me. Once I told her I was there as a substitute teacher she almost squealed with delight and hugged me. She told me that she was so happy to see a teacher dressed like me that is was simply refreshing. I explained that was the way teacher’s dressed when I was in school and that was why I was dressed up. She is and always has been a gem in a load of gravel!!! I am glad to call her my friend!!!

Lifechanger definitely embodies everything about this wonderful woman and more. There is no one more deserving that has ever given so much. I was in her 6th grade class at South, I am now 55 years old. I still carry to this day life lessons taught to us by this remarkable woman.. To this day she will still phone to check up on myself and other classmates. She was not only a teacher, but a friend, mentor and family.
I have known Ms. Yarbrough for over 30 years ??She was my teacher at the same school she helps out now. She really helped me and my parents with all of us as our parents struggled with the language barrier and with 7 kids. She calls me her daughter and I am very grateful to this special women ??She is best ??

Mrs. Yarbrough is definitely a life changer. Every since my first year as a teacher she has been a mentor, whether it be motivation, advice for the classroom, or having a come to Jesus meeting about what teaching is all about. Without Mrs Yarbrough I would not have made it this far or grew as much as I have professionally.
She is also very involved in community. As the nomination states she remembers people, both her students, their parents, and many others she meets and remembers them on a first name basis. When she is out and about she always takes time to stop and talk to those who come up to her.

I’ve known Mrs. Yarbrough for many years. Being a young teen mother and struggling I can recall all of the encouraging words to get me through the hardest of days. I don’t know how she knew I was struggling but I believe only her and God knew.
All three of my children have been extremely fortunate to have met and been mentored by her. She taught them the importance of education, respect and responsibilities. I no longer get to see her since I’ve moved out of Midland and my children are grown up but I will say she’s a beautiful and smart woman and I’m honored to nominate her as a Life Changer.
Definitely one of the biggest positive influence in my life. She was at South Elementary when I went in the early 70s. Ran into her a couple of years ago and she recognized me and called me by name. Truly an amazing lady well deserving of this honor
