Music that Describes Michelle

Michelle McKelvy was nominated by her colleague, Cathy Mitchell.

"Michelle is the most inspiring teacher I've ever known," said Mitchell. "She comes to work each day with the mindset that she's going to change lives for the better. Her passion for teaching high school English is obvious, and she goes above and beyond to get her students to enjoy reading and writing. The most remarkable thing about Michelle is that she helps her students and makes teachers perform better, too!"

"Michelle is known for buying books for her students according to their interests," said Mitchell. "During the quarantine of 2020, Michelle delivered books to hundreds of students at their homes, and they were able to continue reading books they enjoyed. While I don't place a lot of value in test scores, Michelle's students always test higher than others, and I believe it's due to her approach in doing whatever it takes to get her students to read."

Previously, Ms. McKelvy taught in Louisville, KY, where she was recognized as a Golden Oar recipient in 2016.  She was featured on WHAS-11 for her work with students and teachers. While being a leader for English teachers at her school, she also led many professional development offerings such as "Building a Classroom Community,” “Book Love: Developing Depth, Stamina, and Passion in Adolescent Readers,” and “Reeling in the Reluctant Reader."

"I wish everyone could have the pleasure of meeting Michelle, working with her, or having her for a teacher. She is a remarkable woman with a passion for life that is unmatched," said Mitchell.

My junior year of high school I started a new school didn’t know anyone my first day walking into our 8th period I knew right then and there I knew she was going to be a great teacher ! I was blessed to have her my junior year and throughout my senior year ! Through the cries and the laughs with this teacher she got me through the hard times and through graduation when I didn’t think I was ready she went above and beyond for all of her students and I am so blessed to be one of her students. Graduation rolled around and I reassured by her and supported she will always be “Mama M” to her 8th period class of 2021!

I can't think of a more deserving candidate! Being Mrs. McKelvy's husband, I have been blessed with a front row seat to her dedication to students and to the districts in which she serves. She works tirelessly at home and at school to make sure students have what they need to succeed not only in the classroom but in life. But honestly, her dedication to students goes beyond lesson plans. Mrs. McKelvy invests in students outside of the classroom as well. Our family has attended countless sporting events, academic events, graduation parties, birthday parties and more so that her students know "Mama Mack" supports and loves them. Way to go Michelle, we are so proud of you!
