LifeChanger of the Year Nominee Profile

Jason Keeler was nominated by his friend, Heather Deighton.

Upon the retirement of Mr. Keeler, Marion High School will be losing a valuable member of the staff and Marion school family.  He's a teacher who pushes his students to think outside of the box. He is a huge motivator who wants his students and athletes to reach their potential. His energy is contagious and lights up the mood of any room or classroom.

Mr. Keeler has been teaching sciences for 20+ years with Marion Public Schools, not only during the regular school day, but in after-school enrichment programs. The administration recognizes his highly qualified teaching status in annual evaluations. Through the years, Mr. Keeler has served as the building representative for the teacher's union and a member of the school improvement team.  He is the most frequently mentioned teacher in commencement speeches made by students.    

Some of his fellow teachers say that he is wise. He always wants his students to succeed and his colleagues to rise above and do better. He's helpful and willing to share his knowledge. Mr. Keeler participates in school and community events and is an active member of his town.  In addition, others have said he doesn't settle into a status quo. He is always open to learning and growing. 

Along with the staff, the students of MHS have great memories with Mr. Keeler. His cross country athletes, many of whom were recruited by his leadership alone, remember team camps in the summer. This included team bonding, crazy events and competitions, and volunteering to help our environment and national parks. Mr. Keeler was joyfully willing to be duct-taped to the gym wall by MHS students during a student group fundraiser.  His room has been a popular lunch or afterschool hangout because he has built solid relationship with his pupils, even those who did not excel academically.

When Mr. Keeler joined the MHS community, he had a positive effect from the start. Some of his many contributions include fundraising for a local cancer center, coaching community soccer teams, serving DALMAC cyclists that pass through Marion in the summer, and sharing his knowledge of beekeeping with the elementary summer program and other interested kids.  He is environmentally conscious and an active recycler. He has blessed his community with his influence.

"Reflecting on our examples above, this is a pale comparison to the Jason Keeler we know and hold dear-- live and in-action," said Deighton. "Words cannot describe what an amazing member of our Marion family he is.  A void will exist in our school building that will not be easily filled."
