Kim Peters was nominated by her former principal, Tammy Jackson.
"In my 32 years of public education, I had the privilege to work with countless quality educators. None contributed more to the safety and well-being of students than Kim Peters," said Jackson. "Kim spent her entire teaching career working with students whose disabilities impacted the way they learned. Her students required extra support mentally, emotionally, and physically to be successful. Kim not only made accommodations so her students could be successful, but she also advocated that others did, too."
For some students, Ms. Peters was much more than a teacher. She provided them with a safe place to land. She was the reason they came to school. Long after students graduate, they keep in touch with Ms. Peters and often seek advice and support. For too many students, she was the mother they needed to keep them motivated and moving forward. She created social-emotional learning long before it gained a title.
"Without a doubt, Kim is the hardest working teacher I know," said Jackson. "She was often the first to arrive at school and the last to leave. She found a way to support the culture of the building by supporting students who would never walk into one of her classes. Kim was a class advisor, dance chaperone, field trip planner, school spirit participant, and attendee of countless extracurricular events."
"When I think of a person who lives a moral and ethical life, I think of Kim," said Jackson. "It doesn't matter where she is or what she is doing; she conducts herself with integrity and grace. I've seen Kim cry for her students' pain and smile when they achieved beyond their imagination. She is unassuming and not motivated by recognition."
"Kim will leave an empty spot on the staff at her school. one that won't easily fill. Her legacy will live within the hundreds of students that she touched," said Jackson. "I wish the best for her as she gracefully exits the world of education, yet continues to make our world a better place to live."
Kim is a bundle of positive energy and motherly care. We have worked closely together for many years having co-taught Algebra 2, Pre-Algebra and Personal Finance. We have all co-advised classes. She is an amazing support to all students in the classroom and understands how to connect with, motivate, and care for kids. I am always impressed with how well she knows each student. Kim’s work goes beyond the classroom as well. For example, it is a joy to hear her talk about the “social club” where she facilities students getting together to have a variety of experiences such as dinner out, going to the movies, a game night, and the like. She is a champion for students and for the power and purpose of public education. It has been an absolute pleasure to serve with Kim.
Kim, your unwavering dedication to your students in school and beyond is incredible. Anyone who works with you, knows you, or has been taught by you is incredibly blessed. Congratulations!

I was given the opportunity to work closely with Kim during my first year of teaching. I am so grateful for the support, guidance, and encouragement she gave me throughout that year. I really couldn't have done it without her! Kim is an amazing person who genuinely cares about those around her. Not only has she changed the lives of many students, but also of her co-workers.

Kim always holds her students accountable and has high expectations for them to achieve, not just academically, but as responsible young men and women. She always is willing to go the extra mile to talk with her colleagues to find out what is best for her students. I would call it "tough love." I am very fortunate to have worked with Kim! I am happy for her and will miss her.
Kim Peters has made life changing impacts on the lives of not only her students but of staff members, parents and those she comes in contact with. She is positive, endearing and non-judgmental. She has advocated for each and every student regardless of their abilities. She advocates for not only for their academic success but for her students inclusion and involvement in co-curricular activities. Shen ensures that any and every opportunity available for students to be involved in is made known to "her kids" and encourages and supports their involvement -- all the while holding them accountable with a positive demeanor. Kim didn't just encourage the kids to participate -- you would always find her and her husband in the stands cheering them on.
In addition to her classroom connections you will find Kim assisting in any capacity needed. It was my pleasure to work beside Kim and her husband as they volunteered weekly making student lunches during the COVID shutdown last spring, seeing her at band concerts as well as providing much needed positive support to staff members when she can see and sense the need.
Kim is irreplaceable and will be sorely missed by the staff and students at East Jordan Public Schools.

There has never been a teacher more dedicated to fairness, inclusion and pushing students, parents, and the entire world to expect more from our kids - don't give them a pass because they are different. Expect more and they will achieve. Her dedication to the kids and families through school and beyond is amazing. She works hard to prepare them for their next phase of life. She has also offered advice and expertise to families outside the district that has truly changed lives. Special ed takes a serious hit when we lose a teacher like Kim. Love you dear friend and so proud of the person you are.
I have had the privilege of working with Kim for the past 15 years. She is an absolutely phenomenal teacher who goes above and beyond for her students. Whether it is creating a game club for students to have fun alternative after school, helping out with after hours events, or reaching out to each of her students parents several times a week, Kim pours her heart, soul, sweat and tears to help her students feel included and find success. East Jordan will just not be the same without Kim next year. Although I am excited for her, I will miss her dearly!
