LifeChanger of the Year Nominee Profile

Luis Torres was nominated by an anonymous colleague.

Mr. Torres is a former Marine and graduate of the Leadership Academy, New York City's fast-track training program for principals. Since 2005, he has been a part of the PS 55 community, where he has been changing the lives of teachers, students, and staff.

Mr. Torres has worked very hard to provide a positive, secure, and stable environment for those around him. Every year, he makes sure that all of his students receive a backpack full of school supplies, as well as gifts for Christmas. This isn't something many others would do, but Mr. Torres knows the struggles that many of his students and families face.

"Mr. Torres exemplifies his devotion, compassion, perseverance, and commitment to his students, teachers, staff, community, and families," said his nominator. "I would thank Mr. Torres for all his hard work and dedication. I would thank him for his support, and for allowing us to be the best that we could be. His leadership has allowed me to find my voice in teaching. He always finds time to speak with me and encourages me to make my vision happen. Mr. Torres is an amazing principal."
