LifeChanger of the Year Nominee Profile

Carolyn Hernandez was nominated by her principal, Denise Goulart.

Ms. Hernandez is an outstanding educator and human being. Her ability to connect with everyone she meets goes unmatched. She touches hearts and minds on a daily basis. She is the first teacher at work and the last teacher to leave, and always has time to share a friendly story, listen to a concern, or be a shoulder to lean on. Her students gravitate to her kindness and thrive in her engaging classroom. Quite often, you will see students performing hands-on experiments, learning to become stronger readers by engaging in collaborative literature circles, and approaching all subject areas with an inquiry perspective. Her classroom is alive with bubbling conversation and the excitement her lessons bring.

In her spare time, Ms. Hernandez invests countless hours to Next Generation Science training, and is one of a few teachers in California selected to pilot an early implementer's science program. In addition, Ms. Hernandez has become a trainer of trainers to better help her school delve deeper into science investigations. She helps students familiarize themselves with science-related professions at the elementary level to better prepare them for the future.  

Ms. Hernandez is also a former student of Pacific Beach Elementary. It is extraordinary to think that she is now walking the halls and teaching in the same classrooms where she was once a student. Additionally, she often volunteers at school, where she is a strong voice for students and makes sure that her school continues to progress.
