Heidi Good was nominated by her principal, Douglas Pickett.
"Two years ago, Heidi approached me about a goal to bring STEM-based instruction to students at Blackhawk Christian Intermediate," said Pickett. "I told Heidi that we would love to have more STEM-based opportunities for our students, but funding a new role would be a challenge, and I would need her to lead the charge in developing the curriculum and acquiring materials to make improvements in STEM programming for our students. From December 2018 until May 2020, Heidi worked tirelessly to seek grant money and donations from businesses and individuals to make it happen."
"Today, we are finishing the first semester of our school year. Heidi has made it possible for all students in grades one through five to have in-depth, STEM-based lessons that will inspire future scientists, doctors, engineers, and designers," said Pickett. "The feedback from our students and parents has been incredibly positive. Some of our students consider their STEM-based lessons, which are co-taught by Mrs. Good and the homeroom teacher, the highlight of the week."
The atmosphere Mrs. Good has helped create for these weekly experiences is outstanding. The fruit of her labor is a highly engaged classroom, with students excited about science, math, and the rigor associated with those subjects. Her drive and commitment to pursuing her passion will alter lives in the years to come. The atmosphere she has created is nurturing a future generation of thinkers.
As far as adhering to high moral and ethical standards, the BCS community has witnessed her adhere to these standards for many years.
Mrs. Good took a 25% pay cut to make her passion and vision possible for BCS. She has a secure role as a second grade teacher at Blackhawk Christian Intermediate. She has experienced some financial hardship as a result of this move, but remains committed to maintaining this programming for BCS Mrs. Good is also the coordinator of a week-long Camp Invention opportunity that students experience every summer.
"We believe Heidi is changing the trajectory of young lives every day at BCS," said Pickett.
