Music that Describes Laura
Laura Mesa was nominated by Robert Rotunda, Executive Director of the New York State School Counselor Association (NYSSCA). The following profile is based off a letter of recommendation originally submitted for Ms. Mesa's NY School Counselor of the Year Nomination by her colleague, JoAnn Hundertmark.
"Laura has been a guidance counselor in the Valley Stream Central High School District for the past 17 years," said Hundertmark. "I have had the pleasure of working with Laura in the guidance department at Memorial Junior High School for several of those years. As colleagues, we have been able to collaborate on various student and family-centered situations together. Because I have worked so closely with Laura, I can state with the utmost surety that she is an exceptional guidance counselor."
Ms. Mesa is dynamic in her ability to make genuine, long-lasting connections with both the students and the families she works with. She is dynamic regarding her sense of professionalism and the innate caring nature that she displays daily. She goes above and beyond for the students and families she works with because she values their needs and has the desire to help in any way needed.
"I have witnessed on numerous occasions how connected and genuinely concerned Laura is when interacting with students and families," said Hundertmark. "I have been part of numerous parent meetings with Laura where she took the necessary time to cultivate a trusting relationship with the student, parents and family. Laura places great value on developing rapport with individuals so they can feel respected and heard. Developing this rapport has not only enabled Laura to work more closely with families, but has helped to put academic and emotionally-appropriate supports for students in place.
One of the most significant strengths Ms. Mesa possesses is her commitment to her position. She is committed to enhancing the general welfare of all the individuals she services. She has the ability as a counselor to truly see people for who they are and see where they are presently. Ms. Mesa connects with the students and families she works with because she takes the time to listen, displays patience, and seeks to validate the feelings of whomever she is assisting. Then, she makes a commitment to assist them in any way she can. Ms. Mesa is seen as a strong advocate for students' academic and social-emotional needs.
Ms. Mesa also acts as the advisor to a well-attended student club at Memorial, the ASPIRA Leadership Development Club. This club, which she initiated at the school and is the club advisor, engages and inspires students to become involved on the community level while striving to build leadership skills. Participating students develop a greater sense of themselves and work together to develop and implement school activities. Students also benefit from gaining a greater sense of confidence in their abilities and exercising what it takes to put ideas into action. There have been students who have benefited so much from this club, that when transitioning to Central High School, they have inquired about extending this club to the high school level, as well.
"This type of approach as a guidance counselor allows the families in the Valley Stream community to see the school as a direct extension of their community," said Hundertmark. "It allows for families to feel respected and more open to working with the school as a team approach. I believe strongly that Laura has made a direct, positive impact on the lives of many, many individuals and families within our school district."
I've had the pleasure of participating in my schools Youth Leadership club with Mrs. Mesa, and throughout the years, I have realized that Mrs. Mesa would do anything she could to help students and peers out. She will go out of her way to make sure all concerns are being addressed. We will have chats once in a while and she would make sure that I'm doing good and that everything is alright. She is an amazing guidance counselor, and goes above and beyond do to what's right. I'm glad to know someone like Mrs. Mesa and I'm extremely proud that she got nominated for this prestigious award.
This is my first year being in 3 different with Mrs. Mesa; SCSJ, PALS, and Youth Leadership. I have lots of fun being in those clubs and being able to get involved with others. I enjoy helping out Mrs. Mesa whenever she needs and she helps me out when I need it too! Although I hadn't met Mrs. Mesa in my 7th or 8th grade year meeting her now had made it feel like I've met her since the moment I've stepped into Memorial.
I have worked with Laura for a long time and I know her as a very hard worker and devoted counselor. Laura is always so helpful and willing to stop what she is doing to discuss student concerns and work together to make sure the well being of her students is addressed. Our school is very lucky to have Laura as a counselor and her nomination is well deserved.
My mother, Laura Mesa, is the most loving, compassionate, and hard working woman I know. She goes above and beyond the call of duty to do what she feels is right for others. When someone needs her to lend a hand, she gives them an arm. This not only makes her an amazing worker, but also the best mother I could ask for.
Congratulations on such a well-deserved nomination. As School Counselors, Laura and I have collaborated on several occasions and each and every interaction has been pleasant. She exudes positivity which is so important in our line of work. We are lucky to have you as colleagues and our families are even luckier. Good luck and best wishes!
Congratulations Ms. Mesa on your nomination. I have known Ms. Mesa for over 5 years, beginning when she was the assigned counselor for my oldest son. She is dedicated and passionate and is a constant advocate for her students. I am so fortunate that she is also my youngest son counselor. And even though my oldest son has left MJHS over 2 years, she still remembers and inquires about his progress.
I have known Laura for over 20 years, both as a co-worker and a parent of two of her students. As a co worker I see her dedication toward the children of Memorial Junior High every day. As a parent both my wife and I felt very lucky that both of our children had Laura in
their life to help guide their journey during their time at Memorial Junior High
Laura and I share almost two decades of collegiality. We work together to provide a safe, nurturing environment for our students. As the Advisor for the Leadership Development Club, Laura provides a opportunity for our students to become civic minded, active members of the community. This is an important component in continuing their journey to a successful future. Congratulations on your nomination, Laura !
I want to wish Laura Mesa a huge congratulations on her nomination. Over the years I have observed Laura with her students both as a guidance counselor and in the many clubs that she runs. I believe I have a very good relationship with the students at Memorial so we do have great conversations. The kids make me laugh because they are so honest sometimes. From these conversations I have learned just how admired and loved Miss Mesa is. This nomination is so very well deserved for Laura. It’s been an honor to work with her over the years and a privilege to call her my friend . Lisa
I had the pleasure in working with Laura when she first started her career as a Junior High Counselor at Valley Stream North. Laura's compassion and dedication was and is evident in all undertakes. Laura welcomes each individual with a warm smile and friendly spirit. Laura's counselees and their families are fortunate to have her guide their children in reaching their full potential. She is truly a counselor who advocates for each of her students and is able to assist each family during the process. As her colleague and friend it is a pleasure working and with her on various projects. Congratulations!!! .
Congratulations, Laura!!! So well deserved. Your passion and drive to help your students see themselves in the world is inspiring.
I feel so very fortunate to have accompanied years ago on one of your ASPIRA conference trips with our students. What a truly uplifting and educational experience these students would have missed if it wasn’t for you. One of the most treasured moments was when you ran into one of your former students who after graduation ended up becoming a mentor. There is no greater compliment!!
Congratulations, again!
Helen
It's a pleasure working with Laura. I admire her work ethic and how passionate she is to help everyone around her. I specifically remember collaborating with her during Hurricane Maria, her efforts and solidarity were key at a very challenging & sad time for Puerto Rico. She is a great asset to our school and I feel very lucky to have her as a coworker. Congratulations in this nomination! Best of lucks!
Congratulations to Laura Mesa on this prestigious honor. To advocate for our youth, act as a bridge between parents, students, and teachers, and impact the lives of students every day is not an easy task. Thank you for your dedication to our school and commitment to make it a better place each day.
I have had the pleasure of working with Laura Mesa for more than 18 years in the Counseling/PPS Center at Memorial Junior High School in Valley Stream, New York. Laura is not only an amazing School Counselor who goes above and beyond for all of her students, she is also a constant professional who leads by example and is a life-long learner. Any student lucky enough to have her as a counselor will tell you the same thing, she cares. Laura not only cares about each individual student, she cares about their families and the Valley Stream Community as well. When you meet Mrs. Mesa you know right away that she has a huge heart and wants to help as many people as she can. Laura truly makes everyone around her better and is exactly the type of person this world needs more of. I cannot thank her enough for being such an incredible School Counselor who has touched so many lives and has taught me how to be a better School Counselor each and every day.
I have had the pleasure of working along side Ms. Laura Mesa the past five years as a fellow school counselor in the VSCHSD. As my middle school counterpart, Ms. Mesa has been instrumental in helping ensure that our students transition successfully from the middle school to our high school building. She is kind, hardworking and truly knows her students. Congratulations on this wonderful nomination!
I have worked with Laura since I started working in Valley Stream in 2008. She has always been very friendly and helpful in regards to helping me with student concerns. She has dedicated countless hours helping students. She is not only concerned about their academics, but in their social and emotional well being. Her door is always open and I am honored to work with her. Congratulations on your nomination Laura!!
Laura Mesa is a true advocate for students. All of my conversations with her as they relate to world language courses center around the premise of doing what is best for students. Her concern for each student is evident in her approach and action. She is dedicated, compassionate and thoughtful, essential qualities that are reflected in her daily interaction with all students and staff at Valley Stream Memorial Junior High School. This nomination is well-deserved because it highlights the incredible impact that Laura Mesa has on each person in our school community.
I have known Laura Mesa for over 18 and was blessed to have her as a colleague in Valley Stream. (I retired as a School Counselor at Valley Stream South High School in 2019.) We were introduced by our District Director of Guidance with the intention of me mentoring Laura. Little did our director know, Laura would become a source of inspiration to me as well as a dear friend. Laura is a kind, compassionate, passionate, energetic, flexible, organized, intuitive, creative, "hands on" counselor and leader who always strives to support and assist her counselees, parents, colleagues and administrators in any way that is needed. Laura advocates for all of her counselees and is in constant pursuit of new innovative resources which she generously shares with her colleagues. This has enabled Laura to positively impact the lives of thousands of Valley Stream Central High School District students in addition to her direct counselees. Moreover, Laura always takes time to celebrate the accomplishments of her counselees, colleagues and administrators with genuine enthusiasm. Laura Mesa embodies the spirit of the LifeChanger Award by positively impacting the lives of countless individuals, changing each and every one of our lives for the better. I am proud to call Laura Mesa my friend!
Ms. Mesa has been my guidance counselor since I started Memorial. My first year in middle school I was extremely nervous not only for the change of environment but the change in people. Just from the first conversation we ever had she made me feel secure and heard. During these years with her she taught me not only about the importance of responsibility but also the importance of working to succeed not only to my parents goals for me, but my own that I have set for myself. Mrs. Mesa continuously reminds me of my potential and helped me grow my confidence not just within myself but in each and everything I accomplish. She has always given me great advice and always stops me in the hallway to check in. Mrs. Mesa made me feel like I have a second home at Memorial and that I will always have a safe space with her. She is a wonderful role model to many and takes the time to truly make everyone surronding her feel comfortable. Thank you Ms. Mesa for everything you do for me, you deserve this honor and everything good coming forward!
Mrs. Mesa is just a different type of educator and counselor. I have had the privelage of working with her as a parent for the past 7 years and an award like this is well deserved. She has worked with my daughter and now my neice in getting both of them ready for highschool but also ready for the requirements colleges look for. I see Mrs. Mesa continues to grow as counselor constantly looking for ways to connect with her students in her keen efforts to break students out of their shells and off to become bright leaders of tomorrow. I believe she is a great rolemodel for our student and she has shown this through her entire career as an educator. I am proud to say she continues to elevate the Aspira name as a alumni.
Mrs. Mesa is a trailblazer and a positive influence not only for the district she serves, but for the rest of the Valley Stream community. She's passionate about her work and is always looking for ways to help. She is also known for being a fierce advocate for her students and for securing equity and inclusion in the school community. I am grateful for the support she has given my family throughout the years. As a former Memorial JHS parent I can say without a doubt that our district is very lucky to have her as a guidance counselor. I look forward to having her once again as my second son's guidance counselor in September.
Mrs. Mesa was my guidance counselor from 7th to 9th grade. Mrs. Mesa is an amazing person and she rightfully deserves this award, she cares so much for students and she pushes to get what she believes in. Mrs. Mesa always strives for the best and she wants the best for her counselees. Mrs. Mesa is a powerful and expressive individual and she always advocates for change where it's due. I'm so glad to have had Mrs. Mesa as my guidance counselor because she instilled her willpower and her motivation into me. Seeing how great of a leader Mrs. Mesa is and looking at how she carries herself makes me look up to her. Mrs. Mesa is an inspirational figure for all students at Memorial and I hope that she continues to inspire other students to strive for the best and to advocate for what they believe in. Congrats Mrs. Mesa!!!
Ms. Mesa was our daughter's guidance counselor when she attended Memorial Junior High School from 2009 to 2011. The first time we met Ms. Mesa during a parent teacher conference I was amazed how familiar she was with our daughter. Her description was precise as if she had known her for years. Ms. Mesa guided Simone through her junior high school years with consistent, reliable, salient advice. During our daughter's tenure at Memorial we encouraged her to practice being her own advocate. Realizing we would not always be there, we wanted her to learn to respectfully speak up for herself when needed. At the graduation awards ceremony, as Ms. Mesa read the bio of the next award recipient, I knew from her comments it was our daughter. The very characteristics we were trying to instill she recognized and gave examples for. Ms. Mesa is spoken of in our house often. I'm so happy I have this opportunity to share publicly what we say privately at home. Ms. Mesa was instrumental in our daughter's future success. Her caring, loving nature and her ability to encourage and guide students during this critical phase in their lives are gifts Ms. Mesa uses wisely and liberally. My husband and I are so grateful she was our daughter's guidance counselor. She impacted our daughter's life and the lives of countless students of Memorial Junior High School for more than a decade. She embodies the spirit of this award because she truly is a life changer. It is for these reasons my husband and I enthusiastically recommend Ms. Mesa for the LifeChanger Award without reservation.
Congratulations to Ms. Mesa. I have known Ms. Mesa for about 10 years. She has been an excellent counselor for my three children. She is dedicated, trustworthy, hardworking and diligent. I could always count on her when matters arise. I am grateful to have had her throughout my children's educational journey. I am forever grateful for all her help and advise. Again, congratulation Ms. Laura Mesa.
As a prior student of the district, I have had many individuals who have contributed to my success. One of the individuals who was instrumental in my path was Ms. Mesa. Her constant engagement and support of students such as myself, challenged us to strive to become more than what we could have ever imagined. Ms. Mesa taught me not only about the importance of seeking excellence but the responsibility of setting a path for those behind me. Her continued engagement was the reason why I made time to return to the halls of Memorial Junior High to discuss my journey; and why I will continue to do so. As an Air Force veteran, recipient of the Charles Rangel International Fellowship, and soon to be diplomat; I attribute much of my accomplishments to counselors such as Ms. Mesa, who saw potential in me even when I did not see it in myself. I stand as a living testament to her incredible dedication to her students.
Caring, tireless, dedicated...these terms only begin to describe her. She is a credit to her profession. A well deserved honor for such an amazing woman.
Laura Mesa is an exceptional person. She is very dedicated to the students and their families. Laura puts the needs of the students first. Laura is concerned of their well being on a daily basis. She is heartwarming, caring and a very easy person to talk to and open up with. Laura has a heart of gold. I have had the pleasure of working with her for the past five years. Laura made me feel welcome from the first day we met. Her smile lights up a room and her laughter is contagious. She has dedicated her life to being the best counselor possible. Laura loves her career and it has been proven through her work with all the students and families she has helped. As a club advisor she has helped shaped the future of our beautiful country. Helping countless students reach their potential and never letting them give up on their dreams. This is a well deserved nomination for Ms. Laura Mesa. Laura will continue to shine and pass on that brightness to all her students, families and colleagues.
I have know Laura Mesa for over 35 years. Laura has been an amazingly loyal and committed friend who I have seen through the years build excellent rapport with people. She has an extraordinary ability to connect with people and inspire them to put their best effort. I can think of no one more deserving of the award then Laura Mesa.
Very well deserved. It is obvious that Mrs. Mesa truly cares about the students.
Mrs.Mesa is an excellent counselor, advisor, and excels at her work. Although I didn't personally have her as my counselor, I enjoyed working with her and speaking with her in the PALS Tutoring program. She puts the students interests ahead and is always striving to help students achieve. She definetly deserves this nomination.
Congratulations on your nomination!! I remeber when you were my daughter's Ariana Bazile Guidance Counselor and the encouragement you gave her while in memorial. Now Ariana is a freshman in college. Thank you for helping her along the way. Best wishes and we are here rooting for you!!
Reflecting again on such a well-deserved nomination!!! Laura and I started working together almost twenty years ago!! We bonded right from the start because our goals and vision were aligned for all of our students...and we also bonded through laughter and the joy of food and sharing our lunches!! She is caring, nurturing, insightful, dedicated, humble, empowering to our students, sincere, loyal, “real”...a true “life-changer”

I remain honored to have her as my colleague on our PPS team!! I often tell her she has “Spidey-senses” (Spider-Man); and those senses emerge when faced with some challenging work situations. She always comes through with a plan and does NOT stop until she sees it through!!! Those “Spidey-senses” is yet another skill that makes her the extraordinary counselor that she is! Bravo Bravo!!! to my “Chica”. Proud and happy to have her as my colleague on our PPS team. Laura Mesa became...and is my friend, my “framily” (friends who become family) and is an AWESOME School Counselor #LCOY
It is my pleasure to write on behalf of Laura Mesa, who I have worked with for the past 10 years as a colleague in the PPS department. Laura is an exceptional and fierce advocate who goes above and beyond for her students. I have had the opportunity to collaborate with Laura frequently throughout the
years. Laura always seeks to find a deep level of understanding of all problems that surface so the solutions can be specific and action oriented. Laura takes her time to establish strong relationships with her students so that she can meet them where they are and help them accomplish their goals.
It would be hard to speak about Laura and not mention all the wonderful contributions she brings to the school community as an advisor for numerous clubs. Laura brings such a positive energy to the activities
she leads, which is directly reflected in the smiles and excitement of the students she works with. It is not unusual to find a group of students enthusiastically waiting in the guidance office to meet with Laura to share their progress on a collaborative project. Laura has guided her students in bringing their passions and visions to life through these extracurricular activities. In the end, that is what school is all
about for so many of our kids; the opportunity to socialize and collaborate with peers on shared
interests. It is often that I recommend a student to join one of her clubs knowing they will be welcomed by Laura and her students. Laura tries to celebrate the strengths and accomplishments of everyone
around her including the students and staff. It is thanks to Laura’s that we had a “celebration bell” installed in the guidance office. When that bell rings, we know that there is an achievement we must all come together to applaud and celebrate. In a time of so much uncertainty, I am thankful to have Laura as a colleague and a friend.
What can I say about Mrs. Mesa? There are so many things to mention, she is the most humble, patient, understanding, kind and dedicated, counselor that I've had the pleasure of working with. Mrs. Mesa goes above and beyond for students and staff, most evenings staying late to assist others as well as running her afterschool clubs. It is guaranteed to hear her signature heels speeding down the halls during the day ensuring that her students have all that they require. She is a wonderful person over all. Congratulations Mrs. Mesa on your nomination, this award is befitting to your character.

Congratulations to Laura Mesa! Well deserving of such a nomination. In my 8 years at Memorial Junior High School, I have witnessed Ms. Mesa's commitment to her students and their families. She is always there to ensure that her students are able to express their concerns and needs. Ms. Mesa is comforting and professional in guiding her students. She is involved, intense and always gets the job done. We are very lucky to have her working at Memorial.
This year I am new to Memorial Junior High School, however, my interactions with Laura this year have been nothing short of helpful. I had a situation where one of Mrs. Mesa's students confided in me about something that required being reported to the school. During this process, Mrs. Mesa demonstrated how well she knows her students and their families, and her innate passion, concern, and compassion. She was patient with me while walking me through the process, and over time, was able to mend the relationship between myself and the student. I could not appreciate more the time that she takes to meet with me whenever I demonstrate concern for a student, and the dedication she shows for hew work. Congratulation Mrs. Mesa, you certainly deserve this award.
Laura Mesa is one of the most passionate people I have ever met. She deeply cares about not only her students, but her staff as well. She is always smiling and it’s so inviting. Anyone can feel comfortable speaking with her. It makes sense all the sense in the world why she is being recognized for her efforts!
Mrs. Mesa has been an amazing guidance counselor and role model for thousands of students over the years. Her dedication, perseverance and work ethic has been extremely instrumental in the development and growth of each of these students that have crossed her path, In addition to providing academic guidance, she has offered her expertise in many extracurricular activities and after-school clubs. Mrs. Mesa realizes that the students self-esteem and self-confidence needs to be established well beyond when "the bell rings" to go home. Therefore, she effortlessly establishes and maintains contact with many community-based agencies so that her students can be empowered to participate in various fundraisers and events. These experiences often encourage boys and girls to formulate their own beliefs and interests in each of these unique collaborative efforts with the school. As a Founder/Director of a Non-profit agency called Chapters Community Support Services, I am thoroughly humbled by our ongoing collaborative efforts to "pay it forward" and promote positivity over the last 8 years. I am so excited about the prospects of our work together in the future and look forward to see the the continued success of all her students. Mrs. Mesa is a hidden gem within the large Valley Stream School District. Her efforts during this global pandemic has brought stability and leadership to all. She offers hope to so many young people that are struggling with isolation or many of life's challenges. She unconditionally gives hope, vision and passion to their young lives .These attributes will help mold them in their future educational years and their lifelong journey. Mrs. Mesa has been a hero for so many years and continues to lead by example in so many ways. She is providing a platform for all the rising stars to shine.
The first thing that comes to mind when I think of Laura Mesa is her dedication to the students. In the nine years I have known Mrs. Mesa, she has worked tireless with, and for, the students. Mrs. Mesa runs several clubs for the advancement and leadership of the students. Even after junior high school students graduate to high school, I often see them returning to the building to continue participating in her leadership club. Mrs. Mesa regularly stays late hours, and not once have I heard her complain or regret the hard work she puts into her students. Mrs. Mesa is a well deserved recipient of this award.
I’ve had the pleasure of working with Laura Mesa for about 4 years now and she is one of the kindest, classiest, wears her heart on her sleeve, hardworking, genuine person I have encountered at MJHS. Congratulations to my cousin Laura Mesa for all of your accomplishments and support to everyone that you have worked with. You are such a wonderful and caring person to your family and others. Working with young minds is a A challenge but with you on the their side helping them each and every day is an awesome thing to do and no one can do it as well as you can. We are so very proud of you from the family here in Florida and the family in New Jersey we do really love you and we are so proud of you. Congratulations.
Laura Mesa, My youngest sister, whom I truly admire for consistency with her love and guidance in all who enter her life.
I start off when we were kids growing up and how we'd always play teacher, I of course always wanted to be the teacher and so did she, so we would compromise and I'd make her my assistant, where at times she'd play along nicely, but not without giving me a lecture or questioning why she couldn't be the teacher.. Laura was always very eager to be an achiever and learn all that she could, and listen carefully to everything that was told and taught to her.. The years then passed us by and I then got married had 2 beautiful twin girls whom she was very much there for in every aspect of the word, she became their mentors as they accomplished all that they did through their schooling and college careers..
My sister is definitely a go getter in everything from family, friends, and her kids, they are number one.. if you need someone to listen, fight for you, lead you to your future she is definitely the leader that you want by your side.. I am fortunate to have her as my sister and I am so proud of all her lifelong achievements and the more to come.. so thank you so much for considering her for this Great Life Changer award..
Laura Mesa is a woman with the upmost wisdom and knowledge that I know.. She is one of my best friends and listener .. I love her for all she does and is.
I am living testament to the amazing LOVE, CARE, and PASSION she has for her work; Laura is my LIFE CHANGER. I met Ms. Mesa when I attended Morris High School in the South Bronx. I transferred to the school when we became homeless and and failed out of Art & Design High School, I had to go to my zone school. My mom was a single mother who managed to take care of 4 children in our new home within the NYC Housing Association development across the street from Morris High School. I joined the ASPIRA Leadership Development Club and immediately Laura saw something in me that I didn't see in myself; she saw a Leader. She calls me her "Fearless Lion" as I played The Lion in the musical "The Wiz"; this was made possible because of and arts for education program ASPIRA had with the school. She was relentless in her support of me and encouraged me to apply to colleges; I did and became the first graduate in my family to earn a college degree! I continued to use the stage and performed in various productions in the Tri-State area; even on a TV show and movies! While in college, I eventually moved on and became a leader in HIV /AIDS Education. I was then devastated to learn of the achievement gap for Black and Brown Students in NYC and I was determined to make a change. Subsequently, I joined the Teaching Fellows Program and earned my Master's Degree in Education and became a teacher, Lead Teacher, and Eventually a Master Teacher. My Assistant Principal encouraged me to get and advanced certificate in Educational Leadership and I swear I could hear Laura's voice in my head "Heriberto you better do it, I don't want to hear no for an answer". I earned my School Building Leader Certificate. I currently work for the Bronx District and an Instructional Coach in Math for High Schools. I am also an entrepreneur for my own business as well. Had Laura Mesa not been the life changer she has and continues to be I know that my life would have not ended well. When I meet with my peers, we always reminisce about how all that we have accomplished is because Laura Mesa believed in us. When I walk down the graduation aisle to "Pomp and Circumstance" and obtain my Doctorate, Laura will be one of persons that I will give thanks for; she is my LIFE CHANGER!
I have worked with Laura for almost a year now, but it only took a couple of days for me to realize how committed Laura is to people. I specifically use the word 'people' because the extent of Laura's devotion and commitment extends beyond her students - she is equally devoted and committed to anyone that has the pleasure of crossing paths with her. The more I have gotten to know Laura, the more I have witnessed her passion to counsel others and help them to bring out their true potential. Laura strives everyday to instill a sense of confidence, strength, and compassion within her students - skills that will take them far no matter where they choose to go in life. She genuinely has a desire for anyone and everyone she meets to exceed their own expectations, and will go out of her way to be a helping hand in their journey. Moreover, she has an eagerness to continue learning herself - she never shies away from asking questions and making sure she comprehends something new so that she can do it on her own. In summary, she is a wonderful person and an incredible counselor, I feel blessed to be working with her and learning from her.
I was introduced to Laura some 10+ years ago and can say that she is one of the most dedicated guidance counselors that I know.
Many general conversations that we have had include her students. Without divulging confidentiality, I heard was the many ways she has supported them and without taking credit, what I heard was at times how she made difficult calls to parents regarding sensitive subjects... Laura made the conversations palatable and productive for both parents and children- resulting in positive outcomes.
Anyone would be happy to have Laura in their corner.
When reflecting on people who have been a “life changer” to me, Laura Mesa comes to mind. I had the pleasure of having Laura as my internship site supervisor for an entire academic school year. She had immediately took me under her wing, with pride and grace. Laura taught me so much about the counseling profession, and exposed me to strategies and techniques that went beyond what I was learning in my classes. The knowledge she has bestowed upon me, as well as the impact that she has left on my life, is the reason that I am the counselor that I am today. Laura is truly a compassionate, empathetic, dedicated counselor. She is an advocate for students and families, her colleagues, and school community. Laura truly pours her heart and soul into her career, and for that she is the most deserving of this nomination. Congratulations, Laura, for being a life changer to every person who has had the honor or working with you!
I have the pleasure of knowing Laura for 52 years! I will try to keep it short but I am struggling to do so since I have so many fond memories. She is one of the most caring and giving people I know.Always extending a helping hand wrapped with great advice to assist you with whatever is troubling you.She never turns it off and we sometimes have a bit of fun at her expense..Here comes the counselor (ha)but the truth is ..we wouldn’t want her any other way!Funny and smart with a tremendous heart!Truly Selfless and I have the great fortune of having two more sister’s with those wonderful traits...thanks to the wonderful Mom we share!
Hi it's my honor to support my sister Laura Mesa which was given the nomination for life changer of the year. I KNOW that she will continue to devote her time with her colleagues, and students for that is what she loves when I first heard about the good news of her nomination I was over the moon and off course proud .to know that my youngest sister has Achieve the recognition well deserved. IN her 17yrs of being a guidance counselor. Once again she has decided her love, hard work, and God knows lots of patience, and commitment to her students and colleagues and others outside her job. LAURA. MESA has the heart that keeps on ticking and giving may GOD give her the strength and love and those around her for she is one special woman that I LOVE AND ADMIRE ALWAYS!!!!
Ms Mesa is a professional, nice counselor. Always ready to help. We started the new school on the middle of the pandemic and any time we have a question, concerns or need help she’s been with us. Thanks Ms Mesa. Well deserved nomination
I have had the pleasure of knowing Laura as both a co-worker and the Guidance Counselor for each of my 3 children. My children have benefited from Laura’s advice and she was always available for them to go to for support and knowing that she would do right by them. And even though they are in college now, she still makes personal connections with them. And being her co- worker has allowed me to gain an invaluable friend.
Ms. Mesa's commitment to empowering students, cultivating an inclusive community, and transforming the experiences of those who are vulnerable to the oppressive systems within our larger education system is simply unparalleled at every scale. As a former student under her care, and now as a college student who works with Ms. Mesa in some of her student leadership initiatives, I can truly say that she is an Lifechanger in every meaning of the term. I've been through difficult personal moments, and she has consistently been there for me as a supporter and advocate, in and beyond my time at Memorial. I know that I am not the only case, yet just one example of her enduring optimism and belief in the potential of young people. She is most deserving of this nomination for all of the work she does. Thank you Ms. Mesa!
Mrs. Mesa truly believes in the capability and success of each an every student. Throughout my years of being under her guidance, she has always pushed me to go out of my comfort zone and discover new talents. This only benefited me, furthering the development of many skills I now use daily. She has guided me into becoming the leader I've always dreamed of being. Not only has she given me guidance, but she has instilled me with words of wisdom that I can now share with others. Her confidence and intellect are awe-inspiring. Her genuine interest in the betterment of all students is evident immediately when conversing with her. She is a necessity to our community.
Ms. Mesa, my guidance counselor, Youth Leadership Club director, and PALS tutoring mentor, has made my middle school experience better in many ways. She continuously encourages me, as well as many others, to step out of our comfort zones and explore new areas in our school lives. Ms. Mesa makes me feel confident in myself, and I feel like if anything is bothering me, I can go to her, and she will listen to me and help me in any way that she can. Although the current times are tough, working with Ms. Mesa in the Leadership and PALS clubs is enjoyable, and I truly believe that in time she will help me blossom into the best, strongest person I can be, and I've already begun. I thank Ms. Mesa for everything she's done and does for all of her students, and I look forward to our time together for the rest of my middle school experience.
At my time at Memorial, Ms.Mesa truly Helped me to get accustomed to how the school is operated and was truly a guidance counselor I could count on whenever I was confused or needed any help. Ms.Mesa is truly a very nice person and is genuinely interested in helping the students whenever she can to help them strive for excellence. When I was in her Leadership club, she really taught us well on how to really be a leader and stand for your beliefs no matter what. She really gave me the courage that I have today and I truly believe that I wouldn’t be the same person today without her. Thank you Ms.Mesa!!
Mrs. Mesa truly believes that every student can strive to do their best. She always takes the time to help out another student whether it's just giving them advice or even helping them with a project. In my experience, she encourages all students to put in the work to get the best results, she is truly an inspiration. I have known Mrs. Mesa for about two years, and she has really gave me a bigger perspective of what I can do in my future. In her Leadership Club, she has taught us many lessons about how to be a leader. Not just that, but she once told me something that I will always remember is to "never do anything that will tarnish your reputation." Personally that really spoke to me and helped me when making decisions that can benefit my future. Overall, I know that Mrs. Mesa deserves this award for all of her hard work and effort that she put's in to what she does. Everything she does is truly done with perfection.
Congratulations to Mrs. Mesa on this well-deserved nomination! I am the English Chairperson at Memorial JHS and have worked with Laura for the past 8 years in various capacities--each and every time Memorial's students' well-being and growth is at the center of her beliefs and actions. This has led her to reach much success in both big and small forums, from helping students voice their ideas and concerns to facilitating student-led activities and clubs. It doesn't take long to realize how much dedication Mrs. Mesa has to her role as a guidance counselor and she truly is a life-changer in our community!
Ms. Mesa is a strong, amazing, talented guidance counselor. She is always inclined to helping anyone who needs it, whether it be a student or another adult. She builds extraordinary relationships that last a lifetime. Her commitment to making her community and the world a better place is so evident in her daily interactions. Having her as a guidance counselor in junior high school has shaped the person I have become today!
Ms. Mesa is such a hard working teacher to our whole school. She is so kind and helpful. Ms. Mesa runs the leadership club at MJHS and all of the kids in the club are learning from her and are having fun too. I'm in 8th grade and a part of the club since 7th and Ms. Mesa has been so wonderful! She gives great advice and truly cares for her students like they were her own. She does everything in her power to try to help anyone who needs it. Thank you Ms. Mesa for everything, you are so deserving of this honor!
I have known Laura since High School and when she told me she was going to study to become a School Counselor, I said to her, “you already are one.” Laura was always the “go to person”, when it came to giving advice, being empathetic and supportive; not only with me but with everyone who knew her. It was more than evident she picked the right profession. This is due to who she is as a person, a mother, and my wife. Laura has seldom arrived home from work before 5pm since she first became a school counselor. Her job technically ends before 3 p.m. but I can count the days she has arrived home before 4pm. When Laura gets home, she instantly goes into full gear and focuses on her family. She leaves no stone unturned and truly enjoys sitting together at the dinner table to enjoy home cooked meals prepared with love & care. Occasionally, I like to surprise and make a favorite recipe; especially after a long day, her big smile is priceless.
She aims to be there for us 100% no matter what type of day she may have had. We don’t put those demands on Laura, she genuinely wants to, because of her heart. It does not end there, she is extremely attentive to her mom, entire family and friends. Also actively involved at our children schools and PTA. Devotes her time to countless volunteering & community service events. Laura is truly selfless! Frankly, I really don’t understand how she is able to do what she does and manages to make family feel top of her list! I am blessed to be married to “Law “and wholeheartedly feel that this is an award she definitely deserves. It would be a true honor to see her receive such recognition for her calling.
I will never forget the hardwork and dedication that Ms. Mesa put into Memorial. I am currently in the NYU Silver graduate program and after all these years, Ms. Mesa’s advice still holds true for me. Thank you for being such a positive lifechanger for me!
I have worked with Mrs. Mesa at Memorial Junior High School for almost twenty years and she has always demonstrated a sincere dedication and compassion to the diverse community that makes up our school. Her professionalism and commitment are evident in the time and energy she exerts in meeting the needs of her students and their parents. I have witnessed her interacting with our students in ways that encourage and bolster their self esteem and confidence. Her optimism and passion are contagious. Laura is an asset to our school community and so deserving of this honor.
When I think of my aunt, Laura Mesa, and why I admire her, “Life Changer” as a phrase is a natural fit. I grew up spending a lot of time with her and know for a fact that she has greatly impacted my personality and who I am as a woman. I’ve witnessed my whole life how dedicated she is to education (the first in her immediate family to graduate from college, gaining her advanced degree while raising and taking care of her family), her profession, and of course her students. I have very clear and fond memories growing up and hearing the rapport she had with many of her students and feeling proud that I am her niece. Seeing how hard she’s worked (and continues to) at home making sure she’s on top of everything, and hearing the pure joy and concern she has when speaking about her students are part of what make her who she is in my eyes. Whether she wins this tangible award or not (and believe us all when we say she deserves it), she’s impacted so many lives and is already a winner to all of us. Congratulations again Titi- you deserve it all! Thank you for being such an incredible role model to me my whole life.
Was this award created with my aunt, Ms. “LifeChanger” Laura Mesa, in mind? I’m fortunate to have grown up closely with my aunt and know for a fact that she has made a lasting impression on contributing to who I am as a person- so much so in fact, my mother, her sister, often mixes us up and calls me by Laura’s name. When I think of my aunt and why I admire her so, I think of family, love, loyalty, silliness, strength, sincerity, toughness, a willingness to be vulnerable, a person who appreciates knowledge, and a fighter (especially for her family, her students, and for a cause she believes in). I’d like to think that my mom sees even a fraction of any of these traits in me and that’s why she confuses us. Whether my aunt receives this tangible award or not (and believe all of us when we say she’s deserving), she IS a life changer because she’s certainly changed my life- and changed my life for the better. Thank you Titi and congratulations on this nomination!
It has been a great pleasure having a front row seat to Laura’s indelible impact on student lives enabling and opening career paths and opportunities that would otherwise not be available to them. Many years ago, I recruited Laura to work at ASPIRA of New York, an organization fighting to improve education in black and brown communities. I immediately began to see the qualities that make her exceptional in her profession. The first is her dedication to her students, secondly her empathy for students and the issues that impact their daily lives. I remember a time where her dedication was boarder line obsession. There wasn’t an issue that did not have a solution. Laura understood that in order for students to succeed, all must be well in their home environment. Many time’s Laura would present an issue not easily solved, yet it was during these times the Laura would be at her best, making a list, calling on all and any community base organizations or government institutions to intervene and assist. Her empathy was her motivator, not taking no as an answer was a given, her realization that without her assistance a possibility existed in losing the student to dropping out of school and forever changing the path of their education and lives. It has been remarkable seeing Laura’s professional growth. I know Laura would never say this so I will; I am extremely proud to see Laura getting the recognition she richly deserves but more importantly I am proud that her chosen profession is something she truly loves.
My Titi Laura is a one of a kind person. She goes above and beyond to make sure everyone is reaching for their goals and their greatest potential. She is more than deserving of this nomination. All her students are truly blessed to have her as their guidance counselor and more, I am grateful to have her as my aunt.
Where do I begin? I met this amazing girl in the seventh grade who grew into a phenomenal woman. I’ve witnessed her touch so many lives, including mine, in such a vigorous manner. Ms. Mesa has encouraged, supported, sheltered and made each one of us feel special without being judgmental. Her true confidence and high self esteem motivates all, who are lucky enough to cross her path, to succeed.
Laura is a caring and thoughtful person. I met Laura through one of my closest friends and had an instant connection with her. During a career transition, she was very supportive of me and gave me practical advise on steps I could take to explore my options. I am so happy to see her being recognized for her contributions to the field of counseling.
I’m a custodian from Memorial Junior HS and I’ve known Mrs. Mesa for over 8 years. In my time working at this school, i have seen time and time again how she has cared for the students. She is always so happy to help others and very deserving of this award!
I am one of Mrs. Mesa's student and she is an amazing guidance counselor and one of my best mentors! She is always pushing me to be my best self, and teaching other students how to be a leader. Mrs. Mesa always sees the potential we have and encourages us to step out of our comfort zones. She has helped me grow so much in these 2 years and I couldn't have done it without her cheering me on! One student had an idea for a club, and Mrs. Mesa helped make that a reality. Students Committed to Social Justice is founded by Solomon Akaeze and is run by Mrs. Mesa. She also runs PALS, a peer tutoring service, and Youth Leadership Academy, which is affiliated with ASPIRA. Mrs. Mesa is very reliable and I am so lucky that she is always in my corner! Even though she isn't officially my guidance counselor, she very much is. If she hadn't tried to encourage me, I wouldn't be where I am today. Mrs. Mesa really is the best candidate for Lifechanger of the Year!
I have had the pleasure of working with Laura Mesa and observing her interactions with students, families, and her colleagues. Laura is kind and supportive, the ultimate student advocate and supporter. She is very deserving of all recognition for her dedication to the school counseling practice, her students, and the whole Valley Stream community.
I have known Laura for over 15 years. She was my son Matthew's Guidance Counselor when he attended MJHS and did a wonderful job. I also have the pleasure of working with Laura at MJHS. She is extremely compassionate, caring and nurturing to her students, families and coworkers. In our day to day lives it is very refreshing to find someone like Laura who actually really cares and gives 100% in what she does.
I have only known Laura for a few years, but I was immediately impressed with humility and passion for her students and the profession of shool counseling. I have been a school counseling administrator and a school counseling educator for many years. Listening to Laura speak about any topic is always a learning exerience for me. However, when she speaks about her students and her family, I want her to be my school counselor and to be adopted into her family. She is a loving, talented professional, and I am proud to offer my support for Laura's nomination for this award!
I have had the pleasure of working in Memorial JHS with Mrs. Mesa for the past 7 years. Mrs. Mesa is a caring, respectful, and dedicated guidance counselor. We know guidance counselors are a vital part of the school building. They are a bridge for teachers to students and parents, They work with students and can help prevent at risk behaviors/poor choices and can help to literally save lives with their front line counseling skills. Laura fulfills all of these qualities and more. She is a student advocate and works tirelessly to protect our students and families everyday. I just want to say thank you Laura Mesa for doing all that you do! Congratulations on this nomination, it is well deserved!
Laura Mesa is a dedicated guidance counselor, who supports, guides and provides new opportunities not only to her students but her co-workers and the VS community as well. When Laura is in the district office she always has a smile on her face & his eager to help all. This honor is truly well deserved, I wish her all the best. ~District Guidance Secretary
Hi! My name is Victoria Salisan, I am a sophomore at Valley Stream Central High School. In 7th grade I got the pleasure of meeting Ms. Mesa. Although not my guidance counselor, she always made me feel welcomed and comfortable enough to come to her if I ever needed anything. She is such a supportive and encouraging figure and really helped make the hard transition from elementary school to middle school much easier. She also helped during a very hard time last year around the of rise the BLM movement. Not only did she reach out to her students, but she also found a way to support us in making a difference in our school community. Ms.Mesa aided in founding the club SCSJ (students committed to social justice) at Valley Stream Memorial Jr High, where we talk about topics revolving around social injustices in a safe and constructive manner. She helped Solomon Akaeze, the president, and me, the vice president, to creates such a necessary and positive club.
Ms. Mesa has worked in our district for over eighteen years and in that time she has consistently demonstrated exceptional professionalism. She is a true student advocate and dedicated guidance counselor who serves as a key support for all of the students in Memorial JHS. Ms. Mesa clearly cares about her students and actively engages in her own professional growth and development so that she can continue to serve as an invaluable resource to students, colleagues and families. Her support and compassion has absolutely helped to make a difference in the lives of countless students over the years. She is certainly deserving of this recognition.
It is with pleasure that I write this letter for Laura Mesa. For many years, I had the opportunity to work with Laura to prepare the Nassau County delegation of students for the Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute. She provided countless students the foundation they needed to succeed in the program as they pursued their educational goals as well as providing them with the tools required to ultimately grow into productive and caring members of their communities. One of her greatest strengths is her compassion and empathy toward all students and her sensitivity to their cultural needs. Her genuine concern for their progress and achievement is evident in her efforts to motivate and encourage students.
I highly recommend Laura Mesa for the LIFECHANGER OF THE YEAR award. She is so deserving of this recognition! I am proud to say that she is my colleague and friend. I am confident in her unwavering dedication to her students and their families. More importantly, her work is a reflection of the genuine, heartfelt love she has for all.
Hi! Im Ms. Mesa’s prior student, I had her as a guidance counselor for 3 years throughout junior high however she has remained a very active presence and mentor in my life. Her experience and guidance has been instrumental in my growth and achievements; leading me to now where I have lead an initiative resulting in a committee being formed in my school district and having my very own club founded, both of which are hinged on social justice in our school district for the benefit of the student body. Ms. Mesa has always said she sees the potential in every one of the students she meets and makes it her job to help them realize it, this couldnt have been more true for me. Walking into junior high as a timid, unsure, anxious 7th grader, ms mesa has went out of her way to welcome me into the school community and given me opportunities to grow as a leader and as a person. My freshman year I was voted President of the ASPIRA Leadership Club and enjoyed being a head tutor at her Peer Assisted Learning Services (PALS) club. Even now as a sophomore in high-school I am still using the lessons she has taught me daily. If there is one thing im sure of, without the guidance and mentorship of Ms.Mesa I know I would not be in the position that I am right now.
Ms. Mesa was not my son's guidance counselor but it seemed like she was. He was involved in a club with her and she put him under her wing. She is a kind and compassionate person and was very supportive to my son while he was a student at Memorial. I believe that she is definitely deserving of this honor. They say that true character is when you do nice things when no one is watching, Ms. Mesa exemplifies this ethic. As a former school board member and parent, I was impressed with her work ethic, compassion for her students and how hard she worked to ensure students had access to educational and social programming. From that premise, I endorse this nomination for a truly selfless and loving guidance counselor.
As an Assistant Principal it has been a pleasure getting to know Laura and work with her for the past five months. Laura is a professional, passionate and dedicated school counselor who is committed to her students social, emotional and academic development. She goes above and beyond for her students and is well deserving of this nomination.
I can honestly say that Ms. Mesa displays the true characteristics of a proverbs 31 woman, for her worth is far more than rubies, and those who sit under her counsel lack nothing of value.
Ms. Mesa is a gem at Memorial Junior High who sees the best in each of her students. I can genuinely say that my son has been a beneficiary of her great leadership qualities. Ms. Mesa brings out the best in everyone and gives them an opportunity to excel to the full potential. I credit much of my sons success today to Ms. Mesa. Ms. Mesa Professionalism, honesty, and genuine love towards others is a beacon of light. Thank you Ms. Mesa, You have been a blessing not only to my son but my entire family. I’m honored to say we sat under your counsel.
I have had the pleasure of working closely with Mrs. Mesa for nine years. Five as her Assistant Principal and four as Principal. Throughout this time Mrs. Mesa stands out as a consistent and fierce student advocate who will do whatever is necessary to support our students and steer them on a path of success. Mrs. Mesa is never afraid to ask tough questions and think outside of the box to generate ideas in order to assist students. Like most schools, this past year has been especially challenging for our students and staff. In response to our school closing in March, Mrs. Mesa was a key contributor in supporting our students during this difficult time. Her leadership club posted weekly videos providing support and self help tips for our students. Additionally, she took part in providing virtual peer tutoring for our students throughout the school closure in order to assist our students in staying connected while out of school. This practice has continued during hybrid instruction, as Mrs. Mesa's Peer Tutoring club continues to meet, despite the challenges of socially distanced instruction. It is an honor and privilege to work closely with Mrs. Mesa and I am proud to support her nomination.
Mrs Mesa is one of the most encouraging guidance counselor that I’ve ever met. She uplifts every person that has any idea to promote happiness and positive energy to any place. I am grateful for her love and support and I thank her for all she’s done.
Ms. Mesa is really a special person. My son was a recipient of her professionalism and kindness. She always went out of her way to be helpful and encouraging. Even after he graduated from high school she reached out to stay in touch and offer him support and guidance. She is one of a kind. The ultimate professional and a warm and loving person.
I am interning under Laura Mesa and I feel so lucky to be learning from her. From the moment I met her it was obvious how warm and caring she was to all of the students. One of my first events at the school was a nighttime event, I met Laura there and she was surrounded by the students of her leadership club, you could see the love they had for her. Following the event students and parents flocked to her and she gave each and everyone of them her time. She stayed beyond the event to listen all of their questions and concerns. Laura Mesa is genuine and an amazing advocate for her students. She goes above and beyond for all. She is so dedicated and is so deserving of this accolade.
Praise The Lord! I am honor to write this comment on behalf of Mrs. Messa! Mrs. Messa was my son's Guidance Counselor when he attended Memorial. (2009) He is now a student at NYU Silver School of Social Work. Talking about an impact, Mrs. Messa spent lots of time with my son. She was always very encouraging to him. She believed in him so much. I remember one day my son came home and told me that his Guidance Counselor helped him to clean out his locker. I was like for real, who does that and he had a bottom locker, Mrs. Messa encouraged him to attend the Ambassadors Leadership Program. And some of those same leadership skill he is using now. (Also receive an A in his Leadership class this semester) Because of Mrs, Mesa and all the love and support she showed my son over those years, I do believe is what helped him to chose a career in Social Work. She is a life change for sure. And deserve to be recognized for her great leadership. Mrs. Messa is an exceptional, loving, kind, dedicated, thoughtful, amazing Guidance Counselor. And I’m very grateful to God that she was there at Memorial when my son attended. May God continue to bless Mrs, Messa and her family. I pray this for her in the name of Jesus. Min Yvonne Canada
I would not be who I am or where I am today without the help of Mrs.Mesa. Growing up I had a variety of difficult trials and decisions that I was faced with, but not one of these trials I had to face alone. Mrs.Mesa was always by my side. Doing above and beyond to make sure myself, just one student out of a probable 300 of hers was doing the right thing and staying on track. Not only has Mrs.Mesa built my character and turned me in to the profound leader I am today, She was also able to show me what’s family, what it feels like to be apart of the community and having school pride. Recommending me to many clubs, activities and community service events i helped learn what it meant to be an active role player in the community. You can tell when someone genuinely wants to see you thrive, and that’s how Mrs.Mesa is for all of her students. Being a Counselor is not just an occupation to her, it’s an opportunity to wake up every morning to help guide and change peoples lives for the better. She works so hard at what she does and always maintains to keep a smile on her face. As a former student of hers I am proud to say that she was my counselor.
I have had the luxury of knowing Mrs. Mesa since I was in the 7th grade. Now that I am a senior, her impact on me has been tremendous. While in Memorial I worked close with her and was able to gain so much valuable experience. She is dedicated to what she does and prides herself in helping all students. She goes above and beyond to teach students what they need to know and inspire them to make a change. By making valuable learning experiences, she sends every student off prepared and ready to face the challenges of the world. From my first day meeting her, she helped bring out potential in me and helped me become a leader. Mrs. Mesa has changed so many lives including mine making her a prime candidate for this award!
I would like to start off by saying this nomination is well deserved. I consider myself truly lucky to have crossed paths with Mrs. Mesa. Although she wasn't my guidance counselor, she played a huge part in the shaping of my high school career. When I met Mrs. Mesa, I was an 8th grader who had recently joined her ASPIRA Leadership Development Club. I instantly connected with her overflowing passion for helping students. It was clear that she truly enjoyed her career and was determined to have an impact on those she encountered. I grew much closer to Mrs. Mesa in 9th grade when I became the President of ASPIRA Leadership Club and the Vice President of PALS Tutoring, another club that she ran. During this time I was able to see her work ethic up close. Mrs. Mesa is a strong woman, who is willing to stand up for what she believes in no matter what. She takes her job very seriously and strives to ensure it is done to the best of her ability. Through my experiences with her, I have learned more about myself, as well as life as a whole. She has helped open the doors to many opportunities for me, as well as my fellow classmates. I am proud to call Mrs. Mesa a mentor of mine. She is genuinely an amazing women and I truly believe she is an ideal candidate for this award.
I met Laura about 9 years ago while working with some amazing NYC high school students who get up on Saturday mornings to polish their debate skills and participate in a mock assembly in the NYS Capitol every March. I saw Laura connect with these young people in a way I have seen very few people do in my 20 years in the NYCDOE. She was consistently available to the students for guidance and it amazed me the level of trust that was established over the course of 8 weeks.
As a colleague, Laura was a person I came to rely on. She is the first to offer assistance and is thoughtful, reflective and is always thinking of how to improve things. She helped me supervise nearly 100 students every year and was integral in making sure we never had one incident.
I look forward every year to be able to work with her and hope that our professional and personal paths continue to cross in the coming years.
She is most deserving of this nomination and I hope she is fully recognized for the amazing student leader she is.
Laura Mesa give her full commitment to wherever she undertakes .She is a mother, wife and counselor. She achieved her masters degree while being a fantastic homemaker. A real wonder woman. She is loyal, resourceful and countless energy. But most importantly generosity of sprit and empathy which makes her an excellent counselor and all around human being. She has an aura of calm while being fierce less. Her life is full because she works at making happen. Nothing was given she has earned it. A true warrior!!
This is a well deserved honor! Laura has been instrumental in the growth of her local community by endlessly working to better the life of students around her.
For the last 2+ years Laura has worked with students at her school, to volunteer their time to help children abroad. Thanks to her hard work and efforts, new schools and computer labs were built in Africa and Central America, and now multiple generations of children will receive a proper education, and educational tools/resources that will allow them to have a chance for prosperity in their lives. Children in the most impoverished and underdeveloped communities in the world were touched by Laura and she made it all happen from the confines of the middle school where she works.
Laura Mesa is a person that I could never thank enough with just words. An award like this one is just the beginning of what she deserves.

There are those who enjoy what they do and some who feel genuinely connected to their line of work; this special spark differentiates a career from a calling. I have watched my mother go above and beyond to inspire, support, and motivate her students—a fierce advocate not only for their academic success but for their character development as well. I've had the pleasure of meeting several of her students over the years. Each conversation is unique and inspiring but almost always ends with "you are so lucky to have Mrs. Mesa as a mom," and I couldn't agree more. My mom's unwavering dedication to her students inspired me to pursue a career centered on youth development. I truly feel she is an ideal candidate for the LifeChanger of the Year award because that's what mom does; she changes lives.
As Laura’s District Director of Guidance and as the President Elect Elect of NYSSCA I can say that Laura embodies all the characteristics of an amazing school counselor. Her dedication to her students is life changing and her ability to teach them to find the best part of themselves and advocate for their own success is inspiring. She is an example to all school counseling interns of why the role of school counselor is such an important and vital part of a school system and child’s education. Having worked with her for the past three years, I can say without a doubt that she has positively impacted not only the students that she works with, but her colleagues and administration as well. She is truly a prime candidate for this award.

This is a well deserved nomination!!
One of the most caring people I have ever come across. She genuinely cares deeply for those that look up to her.
I was lucky enough to have Laura Mesa as my school counseling internship supervisor while I was in grad school a few years back. From the moment I saw her interact with students, staff and families, I knew I was going to learn a lot from her. Ms. Mesa is the counselor whose door is always open and is always willing to stop what she is doing and put everything aside if a student needs her. She has undoubtedly helped shape me into the school counselor I am today. Ms. Mesa is a remarkable school counselor and I am so happy to have her as a lifelong friend and mentor. I would love nothing more than to see her win this prestigious and well deserved accolade!
Mrs.Mesa was one of the most influential people in my High School School career. She is an amazing guidance counselor and leader. She helped me push myself further than I thought I could and blossom into an extraordinary student and person. Without her I would have been less involved in school and with my peers. Im thankful for her pushing me forward and helping me grow. Thank you so much.
Mrs. Laura Mesa is an exceptional counselor who works tirelessly for the benefit of all students (and their families) and not just the students in her caseload...
ALL students! She is warm and nurturing, yet firm as she strives to make our students accountable, as well as, strong academically, emotionally and socially. She is a colleague who is also an awesome collaborator for various programs, school building and district-wide events. She is so well deserving of this accolade!! Bravo Mrs. Mesa!
Mrs. Mesa is an amazing leader in the Valley Stream community! She helped me tremendously throughout middle school and high school. Whether it was being more active in our school or towns community, as her student I always felt pushed to be the leader I am today. I very much attribute some of my leadership skills to Mrs. Mesa! She helped me get into one of the most influential organizations in my life called PRYHLI. I loved and love that experience and what I got from it. As someone who knew her, and has seen her work in action, has learned from her undeniably, I can say she is absolutely an influential leader in this community and definitely a life changer, she changed mine!
Mrs. Mesa is a kind and truth worthy person and I was very grateful to have met her and had her as a counselor.
A well-deserving award nomination for a more deserving person! Mrs. Mesa’s commitment to the students is impeccable. Her passion for her work shines through in word and deed. Her supportive approach to each student is evident in how her students thrive. There couldn’t be a more deserving individual for this award!
Having the opportunity to intern under Laura, I was amazed by her ability to multi-task and constantly keep a charismatic ability to bring about positive changes in her students lives. It was easy to know when Laura walked into a room because smiles and laughter tended to follow afterwards. Laura is very supportive and is able to keep composed while wearing the many hats that she holds at work. I love looking back at the experiences I had working under Laura and I’m pleased to see the continual impact she continues to make on those around her.
Ms. Laura Mesa was the 2019 New York State School Counselor of the Year. As Past President of NYSSCA, it gives me great pleasure and privilege to write about Ms. Mesa. She is passionate and dedicated to changing the lives of her students and young people. Her goal and mission is to make sure all students are successful in reaching their dreams and aspirations. She is changing lives while encouraging students, who have to work remotely from home and in school, that success is around the corner.
Ms. Mesa was appointed Chairperson of NYSSCA's Membership Committee. She leads with dignity, motivation, and respect. She has an infectious smile when motivating school counselors to become members of NYSCCA. In addition to being Chair of the Membership Committee, Ms. Mesa is also on NYSSCA's Professional Development committee, where she is instrumental in promoting workshops to empower and support school counselors, in this COVID-19 pandemic.
Because of Ms. Mesa's tireless efforts to bring about change through her work, I highly support Ms. Mesa's nomination for the Life Changer of the Year.

Laura Mesa is truly a kindhearted, down to earth woman that cares truly about her students and the school community. She gives her all in to everything she does and won’t stop till the job is done. She was my ASPIRA Leadership Development club advisor in junior high school and provided me with tons of opportunities to better myself, that I still hold close to my heart today.
