Nancy Smith was nominated by her colleague, Maryann McConnell.
Ms. Smith provides exemplary leadership to the mentoring program at Highlands Elementary School. Her team of community mentors touches the lives of elementary school children throughout the school year. Her leadership skills include recruitment, positive role modeling, compassion, and organization. She goes out of her way to pair mentors with students. She bridges the gaps between teachers and students. This year, she spearheaded a holiday drive to benefit several Highlands families. She collaborates with school staff to ensure children who need a mentor are matched. She does little things to show appreciation to the mentors and staff. Ms. Smith is an unsung hero at her small community school.

My mother has dedicated her life to teaching, mentoring, and being a positive influence in the lives of children in Delaware. Over the years students have remained in her life due to the impact she had on them as children. Her students children also visit! Her job as Creative Mentoring leader for Highlands Elementary school not only helps the children but gives her purpose and allows her to use her many talents to benefit others. I have always known that my mom is a life changer; I have seen it time and again over many years. I hope in this recognition for her, it inspires other teachers and leaders to follow in her footsteps to improve the lives of children in need. I am very proud to share my mom with whoever needs her; she has endless love, compassion, and knowledge for anyone in need.

Nancy has a big heart for both students, teachers, staff and mentors. She is always focused on others and how she can best help them. She understands that many students need more emotional support and she makes sure they get it.
