LifeChanger of the Year Nominee Profile

Leena Hall-Young was nominated by her superintendent, Diana Greene.

Ms. Hall truly lives by her mission to provide a sense of compassion, commitment, and courage in her students. Her students consistently perform above the school and district average on key state and national assessments. 

Ms. Hall also serves as the English department chair, providing instructional leadership and enhancing articulation regarding curriculum alignment with standards.  She also works with teachers to provide effective instructional strategies that most appropriately meet the needs of students.

One of Ms. Hall’s most outstanding qualities is her ability to create a safe, nurturing classroom.  When students step into her classroom, it feels like they are coming into a warm, safe space.  The room is draped in soft lighting.  Blankets and jackets are available for students who are cold.  She has created a snack zone for students who arrive to school hungry. 

In addition to the physical space, she has created a safe space for students to be an active participant in their learning.  Students regularly debate, give presentations, state their opinion, and actively learn from the teacher and from one another.  Students in Ms. Hall’s class are engaged and excited to participate.
