Music that Describes Laura

Laura Martin was nominated by her colleague, Christine Saggese.

Mrs. Martin is an outstanding first-grade teacher. Her love of teaching is apparent each and every day in the quality of her lessons, in her rapport with each individual student, and in the enthusiasm she brings to the classroom, both in-person and remote. Mrs. Martin has been involved in the pilot of standards-based grading. She's also a member of the Sunshine Committee and Cooke Service Committee, and she has worked with the Social Studies Curriculum leader to create first grade SS lessons for the district.

Mrs. Martin is an advocate for all of her students. She will do whatever it takes to make sure that each child's unique needs are being met and that each child will be successful. Each year, she creates an environment where students feel accepted, important, and seen. She is inclusive of her students' cultures and identities and creates a classroom community where students feel confident and comfortable. Mrs. Martin's passion for education is contagious and the true meaning of what teachers should aspire to be.

Mrs. Martin is a life changer for sure! We were so incredibly lucky to have her as our daughter’s first grade teacher last year. She instills a love of learning, and teaches the importance of kindness. During the pandemic she stayed in touch with the kids, sent them notes of encouragement, and had fun and educational zoom meetings. She also went out of her way to support the healthcare community. I can’t say enough good things about her!

2020 as we all know has been such an awful, ugly, depressing, and sad year. My daughters first real school year as a kindergartener ended short due to covid and she was devastated. Leading up to this school year as a first grader, she was assigned to Mrs. Martin’s class. Since day one, Mrs. Martin has made my child feel secure, confident, loved, and smart! She has done an AMAZING job teaching her students both virtually and in person, always keeping my daughter engaged and excited to go learn even upstairs in her own bedroom. My daughter is doing so well in school and tells me everyday how much she loves her teacher and learning from her. I can’t say enough how blessed I am that my daughter has her as a teacher. Mrs. Martin, thank you so much for EVERYTHING that you do!
