LifeChanger of the Year Nominee Profile

Opal Ferron was nominated by an anonymous parent of a student.

Ms. Ferron began teaching in Broward County in 2005. In 2008, Ms. Ferron earned her Educational Specialist Degree in Reading from Nova Southeastern University. Her tenure at Broward County Public Schools has afforded her opportunities to teach middle and high school students at Rickards Middle, McArthur High, and, since 2014, at Plantation High School.

Ms. Ferron is currently Plantation High’s Literacy Coach. She's responsible for creating a learning environment for students that promotes reading, writing, and literacy across curriculum. Ms. Ferron is a leader amongst her peers by mentoring and collaborating with her colleagues. She also facilitates lessons that meet the diverse needs of Plantation High School students. Ms. Ferron is an advocate for children and believes that family involvement in education is an essential part of a student's success.  She believes in order for a student to be successful, the whole student's needs must be met. Her learning environment is set up for this model.
