Mrs. Bennett has a proven ability to make a positive and beneficial difference in students' lives. She is the type of person who models how to treat everyone fairly and kind, even in moments of adversity. She is very patient and solicitous by always advocating relentlessly for both students and parents.
Mrs. Bennett is the epitome of an excellent, accomplished teacher. She's always seeking truth and equity so that she separates fact from fiction and that her students have the necessary resources they need to learn and thrive. Mrs. Bennett never abdicates from uncomfortable issues in special education, especially issues surrounding policy, curriculum access, and services. She makes sure parents know their rights and that her students learn how to positively advocate for themselves. Former parents and students continue to communicate with her to offer a thank you or say hello.
Mrs. Bennett has designed her classroom in such a way that all students and parents feel safe and welcomed. Before the closing of schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she would celebrate parents and students by hosting programs at school that she created with the collaborative help of paraprofessionals within her classroom. She also makes sure everyone feels comfortable in her presence, from related service providers, to cooking and custodial staff. One time, Mrs. Bennett taught her students how to code and had Code.org volunteers to come speak to her class. One of the guest speakers was a representative from NASA. As you can see, she sets high expectations for each of her students so that they are competitive with their non-disabled peers. She always reminds each of them that they are extraordinary and that their disability does not define who they are; their grit does.
As far as leadership, Mrs. Bennett is the lead Academic and Functional Skills teacher in her classroom. She is an Exceptional Needs Specialist candidate for the National Board of Certified Teachers (NBCT), a guild member of the Urban League of New Orleans, and an active member of the United Teachers of New Orleans (UTNO). She is also the Founder and CEO of the Reed-Bennett Institute of Alternative Learning (R-BIAL) in which she is redesigning at this very moment. Additionally, she's a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
Mrs. Bennett is a Master Teacher of both Economics and Entrepreneurship, and she has endorsements in Special Education, Music Education, and English. She also holds a degree in Mass Communications and is currently working towards her Master’s in e-Learning. Mrs. Bennett is a life-long learner who uses all of her knowledge and experiences to make a positive impact inside the classroom. She continues to use data and evidence to help her students grow, both academically and functionally. Her students’ success record speaks for itself. Every tenth of an increase is a huge gain inside her classroom. Every student's success is celebrated, no matter how big or small.
Mrs. Bennett occasionally offers music therapy by performing on either the alto or tenor saxophone for her students. She also uses music derived from Binaural beats with Alpha, Beta, Delta, or Gamma waves in the background. This is very soothing for students with autism. Mrs. Bennett promotes communication between learners who are verbal and non-verbal. Learning to either speak or sign the days of the week is one way both verbal and non-verbal students can communicate among teachers and each other. Along with the paraprofessionals in the class, Mrs. Bennett celebrates student success and offers encouragement during struggles and frustrations. She is empowering to those teachers and students while creating life-long bonds with families. Mrs. Bennett’s classroom is a place where mistakes are looked upon as a gateway to understanding and innovation. According to her, “mistakes are just misconceptions waiting to be understood and justified."
Mrs. Bennett adheres to high moral and ethical standards. She is honest and truthful, and she leads by example. She values what is right and what is wrong by being just, even when no one is watching. Mrs. Bennett is very courageous by speaking up, even when it is uncomfortable. She possesses generosity, tolerance, fidelity, integrity, self-control, and above all else, fairness. She models and teaches each of these characteristics to her students.

Ms. Bennett is one of the best teachers I have ever known. She teaches a self-contained class, yet she works so hard to make sure her students feel loved and included in the general school culture and curriculum. She is relentless in her advocacy for them, making sure they feel like they can do anything, despite their disabilities. We are blessed to have her be a part of our team and I learn so much from her every day.

Mrs.Latosha Bennett is deserving of this award and many more. It takes a dedicated and loving person to do what she does. She's been my daughter's teacher for a couple of years now and its been a pleasure to work with her for my daughter. It takes a special person to deal with Special needs children . She gives the kids the extra love and push they might need. This job requires lots of time and patience that so many educators aren't recognized for there hard work . I met Mrs. Bennett in 2017. We both taught at the same school. She is very knowledgeable of her content area and always go above and beyond to make sure her students have adequate access to instructional material. She is an asset to any Special Education program.

This comment is about a young lady whom I've known for several years. Mrs. LaTosha Bennett is not only a great mother, a quality that she brings into the classroom, but she is also a highly capable and dedicated educator. Her students are blessed to have a teacher who sees the potential in them from the start, and does all she can to bring those potentials and skills to the forefront.
In her capable hands, her students develop in ways they never even thought possible. That's what she does best in her calling... She Gives Hope. Oh my, where do I begin? My daughter is such a blessing in my life. She has always been a helpful person and always wanted to make everyone happy. Growing up, she never wanted to miss a day of school. She loved all of her teachers and they loved her. I can remember taking her to the library to participate in the summer reading program and she would retell the entire story that she read. The librarian would tell her, LaTosha you didn't have to give all the details. She has always been a very thorough person. Outside of her school work, she loved music and learning about how things worked. She has always been very gifted. Despite being diagnosed with Lupus, my baby continues to work hard every day to ensure that her students have the greatest education possible. Many nights I ask her how she is feeling and she justs says I'm ok mom, just researching or studying or reflecting on her day. I am glad to call Latosha my daughter.

Ms Bennett is a teacher that goes above and beyond for all students. No one can light the room with just a smile the way she does! She is incredibly selfless,kind, and always pursuing what is best for kids. She work tirelessly, without complaints, and is a sincere team player. My mom is the kind of mom that you can laugh and joke with, that will give you her last, and that will go above and beyond to make sure you are ok. I have never seen my mom be mean or say anything mean to anyone. She's always smiling or thinking or finding ways to help others. People always tell me I look like my dad, but I have my mom's eyes. That means so much to me because when I look into my mother's eyes, I see determination, motivation, strength, and courage. I love you mom to the moon and back. Thanks for being a positive, constant change in my life.
My mom is a huge inspiration in my life. She has taught me that it is ok to be different and it's ok to make mistakes. She is kind of like my superhero because she's always saving the day by helping change the world one student at a time. My mom was my 1st teacher and continues to coach me in those things that I may find a little difficult. Because of my mom's high expectations for me to do well, it groomed me to have a growth mindset. I have had many teachers, but my mom is the best! When I grow up, I want to be just like my mom. She is so gifted. She sings, plays the saxophones, is a jokester, created her own businesses, is super smart, and just very outgoing. Each of my mom's students are like older brothers and sisters to me. This is because she treats everyone like family. I don't think my mom has ever gone any where and hasn't made a new friend. She's just awesome like that!

Very Lovable, Loyal, Gifted, and Truly Dedicated
LaTosha has a go-getter attitude when it comes to improving her own teaching craft for the benefit of students. She is pursuing National Board certification and is always seeking ways to be better as well as share her knowledge with colleagues!
I have known LaTosha for over 20 years. I met her at Hinds CC, a Historically Black College in Utica, Mississippi, during my Freshman year. At that time she was the Student Government President as well as 1st runner-up to Miss Hinds. She also was very good at playing video games, so good, she actually ended up playing against me in a tournament. She was one of the smartest, enchanting, and exciting girl I had ever met. Whenever she wasn't in class, she was organizing events for campus life, at band/choir rehearsal, heading different groups and organizations on campus, and most of all, tutoring other college students or mentoring those in Upward Bound. You would have thought she was either a Political Science Major, or was studying to become a Special Education teacher, but she actually studied Computer Science and Music. She graduated with high honors and later enlisted in the military as well as enrolled in Jackson State University where she further studied Military Science, Music, and added Mass Communications to her examination.
Every moment with LaTosha is an interesting one. She has the ability to make those around her smile even when her day isn't going so well. She will give her last to help a person in need, and she has always gone above and beyond to make sure those around her are treated fairly. LaTosha made a positive impact on my life. She was my motivator and taught me many things when I did not understand. To this day she still sacrifices so much to help others. Currently, she teaches students with special needs. She is kind and patient and set high expectations for them. I am proud to call her my wife.
