Jose Nino was nominated by a former student who wishes to remain anonymous.
Mr. Nino is a first generation American who has been teaching at Corona High School his entire career. In his 48 years, he has taught his nominator's father, mother, two sisters and a handful of his aunts. He has taught countless generations in his small town as well. He raised two sons and put them through schooling with his teacher salary. Both are successful, upstanding citizens, just like their father.
Mr. Nino teaches photography and is the head coach for the Corona High tennis program. He has led his teams to several league championships and coached several individual CIF champion student athletes. In his time in Corona, he has become the most sought after individual tennis trainer and leads the most successful girls tennis program in the district. He always holds students to the highest standard and provides them with an equal, equitable opportunity to succeed. There are countless students that come from humble beginnings at Corona High, and they cannot afford the necessary tools to succeed with photography or tennis, which can be expensive hobbies. Mr. Nino loans cameras, film, tennis racquets and tennis shoes so that cost is never a deterrent for success. He will even re-string his players' tennis racquets in his spare time so they do not have to pay a professional to do it for them. Needless to say, his nurturing attitude does not go unnoticed on campus, as he is widely held as a favorite amongst the students and his fellow teachers.
Recently, Mr. Nino's wife suffered a major set-back with her health. He has been pulled in many different directions in his life, but none as challenging as this. His fellow students and faculty have all rallied behind him and donated funds or health care materials that can aid him and his family in this difficult time.
"Just as he poured his heart and soul into his students all those years, we want to return the favor to him and nominate him for this award," the nominator said. "We honor his love for all the students. We cherish his steadfast commitment to the moral standards he instills in the school and his community. And we stand behind him in these tough times."
He was my photo shop teacher all I can say AWESOME TEACHER from class of 1985.
I am so glad that he won this award. He has touched and changed so many lives and yet he asks for nothing in return. This award is something to show how his hard work of generations has paid off. From having him as a coach, I am a better person, along with my peers and teachers. I have not yet met anyone who did not like Niño. He is not only a Corona High Legend, but the best person out there who could have possibly won and exceeded the limits and expectations of the recipient. Mr.. Nino was my Spanish teach 71, 72, 73. His classes were great. No the typical Spanish class, he made the class fun all the while teaching us Spanish. Thank you Mr. Nino and congrats..
Mr. Nino is the most inspiring teacher I've had the pleasure of learning from. He encouraged people to pursue passions and think and be different. As a 1982 grad and a teacher for 20+ years, I am happy to affirm Mr. Nino for this award. I can still hear his voice in my memory as he taught our photography class and I remember it as one of my best classes in high school.

Mr. Nino was my Spanish teacher in the late 70's. He was always very nice to us and we still have a relationship even today. When I went to school there was a definite separation of students. Students would only hang out with those that they associated with which would cause fights. Mr. Nino would talk to us and try to make us understand that we were all alike. He was a life changer in my life.
Quality human being. Would give you the shirt off his back if he had to. Always going the extra mile for his students and will always be a pillar of our Community. Our city owes him our gratitude for a job well done!

What at the find seemed like a small thing - has/was a major step into where I am today.
Mr. Nino was my photography teacher from 1980-1983 and helped me excel in tennis. He is a truly multi-disciplined teacher who, in an average morning before school, would have several students in his classroom seeking help with spanish, photography, calculus, english, etc.
He is loved, admired and respected by everyone he comes into contact with. He's an educator who tirelessly works to make a difference in the lives of every student and has been a huge advocate for those in need. I am proud to nominate Jose Nino for this award!
I had Mr. Nino for Spanish one year. I don't think he typically taught Spanish, but I was lucky enough to be his student that year. I was immediately a fan of his passionate, funny, and kind-hearted soul. He immediately leaves a lasting impression and he is one of those teachers you remember for a lifetime. My aunt also was coached by him for tennis when she immigrated here from Vietnam in the 70's and she always shared stories with me about him. He is truly an amazing person and definitely deserving of this.

Mr. Niño is a great teacher... not just at photography, but with everything! He was my teacher about 15 years ago, and I still remember all the caring, compassion, and kindness he showed all of his students. A great person!
I met Nino when I was 8 years old and learning to play tennis. He was so much more than just a tennis coach - he was a mentor and a friend. Over the years and through high school, he was an extended member of the family - someone I could always talk to, someone who encouraged and pushed me farther than I ever would have gone alone.
I never had Mr. Nino as a teacher, but members of my family did and they enjoyed him as a teacher. Most of all, he was a great mentor to many students and to the great community of Corona, California.
He’s absulutly the greatest teacher I’ve ever known! He was my photography teacher. He taught class very well and took his time with each student. He was a very supportive teacher, always had great advice for everyone. He’s the best!

Mr. Nino was my photography teacher for 3 years out of my 4 years at Corona High, I learned so much from him. He inspired me to reach for the stars and while I didn't become a photographer I ended up marrying one and we both share the passion, beauty, and art photography brings to the world. Mr. Nino, is amazing. He was my moms, aunts and my teacher. To this day if I see him at the store he remembers me gives me a hug and asks about the family. I graduated in 2002 and to this day I still sing praises about him.
Mr. Nino was always so supportive as a teacher. He always encouraged us and made us feel that what we were doing was important. High school was quite a long time ago, but I distinctly remember a lot from photography class. His treatment of his students leaves a very lasting impression.
You were a wonderful and kind teacher. I had you for Spanish and I remember that we had to be on our toes and answer in espanol. I can still recite some of the the lines for the dialogues that we had to memorize - and that was 40+ years ago. You taught us well!

It is really hard to put into words the impact that Jose had on me as a student, over 40 years ago, as well as the thousands of students he has taught and mentored.
Although I only officially had Jose as a Spanish teacher, my hobby has always been photography and he supported that passion then and at least once a year visits my business to get the latest photos I have taken. Tennis is one of his big passions, and I was able to improve my game a bit with Jose's help, I just have not had time to play any tennis in years.
But the real person Jose has been to his "students" is not so much a teacher, but someone who is able to connect to each and every person he had in his classroom, picking out the "special" aptitude they had and encouraging their talents.
Another gift Jose possess is the ability to remember EVERYONE's name, their spouse's name, even if the spouse was not a student, and the special talent each person has.
Jose has been a gift to Corona High and the community of Corona!
Sr. Nino was my Spanish teacher and tennis teacher in the early 1972,73,74. All of us who got to know him felt lucky to have him as our teacher. He spoke to each student with kindness and respect and as such we all actually listened to him. He has a great sense of humor and the pure talent to take a situation that might have gone sideways and make it be ok and a learning experience - That was not an easy task with teenagers. He personally connected with each of his students whether they were best in class or struggling to keep up. All of us mattered to him. At least for me, that connection lingers because I remember him as one of the best teachers I ever had. He deserves this honor and more.
Mr. Niño is an inspiration to students, athletes, and co-workers, but he has also made very valuable contributions to our English Learner department, especially in supporting our parents. He has conducted meetings with parents by donating his time and knowledge to serve our community. Mr. Niño is humble at heart and shares his story of sacrifice when he and his family immigrated to the United States. He shows care for our families and concern for our students struggling with the language. Mr. Niño speaks to our families with the heart, and he can relate to the many challenges that our population faces. Mr. Niño is very deserving of this award. He is definitely a life changer for entire families!
Mr. Niño is by far one of my favorite teachers throughout the years. He has such a fun sense of humor and one of the kindest hearts. His passion for photography (and as a tennis coach) has helped so many struggling students to find the motivation to work harder and find success along the way.
He truly wants his students to succeed in photography (and tennis) and in life. He is not one of those faceless teachers who gives endless amounts of homwork, but one who is willing to sit down with his students and figure out how to help them thrive. I continually found him talking with students who suffered with depression, difficult home lives, the death of a loved one, and those who were just having one of those days. After my grandpa died, he just listened and that was what I needed.
In my class, he noticed one of his students struggled understanding the basics in how to create good photographs. So he took it upon himself to find someone to help her in the kindest way possible. It was my "mission" to be her friend and not her tutor or teacher. He knew that the best way for this struggling student to learn was not from an instructor, but from a peer. At the end of the year, this new friend of mine was able to take a decent photograph and develop it in the dark room.
Mr. Niño has also shown to be just as caring to others even when faced with such a trial as his wife's health. He asked me to let him know if there was ANYTHING he could do for his students while he was away with his wife. I can still remember the day that we discovered of his new struggle. I had him for 1st period and he had left that afternoon after hearing of his wife's health. The next day, we were in amazement that our very punctual teacher was not there, for he had normally told us in advance if he was not to attend. You can really tell how great of a teacher Mr. Niño is by the outpouring of gifts and notes his students brought in for him. Many of his students, myself included, also found even more motivation to do well in his class while he was away. We wanted for him to be proud of us. Many of us became more responsible and independent students.
I am glad I was able to know Mr. Niño, for he truly is a friend I will always cherish. He not only change statistics of his students, he changes their lives.
He is one of the kindest person/teacher that I have ever met. My favorite memory of Mr. Niño is him taking me and several of my classmates to the Senior Dinner Dance. You see my parents were extremely strict when I was growing up and they would not let me go to any school dance or function. Mr. Niño came over to my house and asked my parents permission to take me to the dance. He promised all of our parents that he would take care of us and make sure we would be safe. It was the one and only dance I got to go to and I will never forget forget him doing this for me.
Wonderful man and teacher. Mr. Nino has been a important mentor in so many you people’s education experience.
Mr. Nino a coach, teacher but most of all a friend to all. Someone who pours his passion for life, education and tennis to all. My daughter and our family Met Coach Nino through tennis her freshman year, and he quite frankly was a life changer for her.... he instilled Dedication, love of the game and all around fantastic work ethics...Ashley always tried to impress him and in turn he impresses us at every turn!

I personally have not had Mr. Niño but i have heard great things from him. This year i am taking class but we have a sub because of the current health condition but i would really like to have him back in the class. He's really a devoted and caring person that deserves this award more than anyone out there.
I very much respect his countless contributions to the continued validity of our school. In particular, his performance as a teacher to the Corona High Photography class has been absolutely phenomenal.
Mr. Niño is a major part of what Corona High is. He is the heart and soul of Corona High now and has been for many years before any of us got here. He has such a kind heart and all he does is for the students at Corona. He teaches more than what is on his syllabus. He gives so many life lessons to all he meets.

I met Coach Nino 12 years ago. He was one of the first teachers who introduced himself to me. I remember thinking how cool it was for this veteran teacher/coach to make time for the new guy on campus and to make me feel so welcomed. Jose Nino is a Corona High institution. Everyone who knows him respects him. He is the most genuine, friendly and caring person anyone could imagine. I have many fond memories of Jose, but one I would like to share involves my father. Over 25 years ago, my father taught adult education classes here at Corona High. One night he lost his wallet. My father dropped it as he was getting into his car in the main parking lot. Jose found the wallet and delivered it to Corona Jr. High, where my dad taught during the day. Its nice to know that their are still honest people in the world. That is how my father met Jose and many years later, when I became a staff member at CHS, Jose told me the story and I shared it with my father. Jose Nino has touched many generations on this campus and in this community.
He is a sweetheart. He does many things around this school out of the kindest of his heart for us. We all truly appreciate everything him for his sweet actions.

Mr. Niño has taught so many students over the years. He's a very inspirational teacher. Mr. Niño works very hard at his job to help students. He's changed our lives for the better. He would always say "Proud of you" to his students. It is one of his favorite things to say. He has giving aid to student whether is was Financially or Mentally or physically, he always there to lend help to us students. Mr. Nino is a very kind person. He did his best to help people and did many good things for people. I didn't have the chance to meet him, but reading all these comments from people that know him, makes him seem like a very up lifting , and encouraging person.

I have never had the privilege to meet Jose throughout my first year at Corona but after reading about his story I really want to get to know more about this man. As this man, dedicates is life and time into everything he does with the tennis group to Photography to his wife. “It’s cinchy.” Is a phrase Mr. Nino told me more times than I can remember in the year he was my photography teacher. When I was down on myself, when I wanted to give up, when I didn’t understand, “It’s cinchy”, he would say.
A few years passed and I spotted him at the store. He stopped to say hi. I introduced him to my mom. We chatted for a few minutes.
“It’s cinchy,” he told me, before walking way.
“What is?” I called out.
“Life!”
I can’t think of a more deserving teacher.
One of the most genuinely carrying and loving people anyone will ever have the pleasure to interact with! His unique humor and sarcasm was without a doubt contagious. He made you feel so welcome, as if you were the only person in class he was teaching. Even though there was 20-30 other students in class.

Where to begin, this amazing person was not only a favorite of mine but helped to inspire hope and make his class the best out of the rest. He is a superb man who makes his classes fun and worth going to, even more than my college classes. He taught me to love photography and keep a keen eye on the world around us, both in its beauty and ever changing self. He is simply deserving of the highest rewards possible for all the hearts he has touched in his long tenure as one of the best teachers Corona High has to offer.
Niño may be the most amazing man I will ever come across in this life. He is the most encouring, uplifting, and supportive man. Niño always knew what was on my mind before I even had to say anything to him and he always helped me find a way to figure out whatever problem I was facing. He taught me more than any teacher I’ve ever had. I am so blessed I have the opportunity to know such a wonderful man. He is my biggest inspiration and I’m sure so many others will agree without a doubt.
Jose was a great mentor and teacher for my kids back in the 70's, and was the photographer at their weddings. He contributed so much to the Corona Tennis club when they were getting reorganized. He provided lessons for youngsters free of charge on Saturday mornings. If racquets or shoes were needed, he made sure that they had them. Jose worked long hours when the Corona Tennis tournaments were held, not only was he the Director, he found time to play. His dedication to the sport is an inspiration to all. Despite his long hours teaching,whether it be Tennis, Photography, or Spanish, his family always came first. Jose is deserving go this award. I had Mr. Nino for Spanish class and during the year there was a school day that was cancelled due to flooding. At the end of the year they added the day back and most teacher's told us we didn't have to show up, except Mr. Nino. He told us we would flunk if we didn't show up. So, I think Mr. Nino's class was about the only full class that day! Now being older (won't say how much older), I get the message and I can say I follow things thru to the end, not because I have to but because it is what you should do. I agree with the other comments, he not only taught the subject matter, he taught life lessons. Amazing teacher!

My whole family was devastated to hear about his wife, but we supported him as much as we could. Mr. Nino was a first generation that teached at Corona High School. He taught for 48 years at Corona High. He was a head coach of the tennis team. His team went to the championships several times.

Mr. Nino is one of the most respected and hardworking teachers on campus. He is a sincere man who cares for everyone on campus and wants to help as many as he can to be the best students they can be. H has dedicated much of his time in and outside of school for no reward other than the student's benefit. Because of this he deserves this award for his humble ways and his impact on so man lives on Corona's campus.

Mr. Niño is such a charismatic person, that he can make your day better by just smiling at you. He did that to me many times. When I would arrive to zero period in a bad mood, he would always be by the clock tower just talking to other teachers. He would smile and say "good morning" and his happiness would transmit to me. Although he was never my teacher, I do have great appreciation toward him. Actually, my parents absolutely love Mr. Niño, due to the fact that he was my dad's photo teacher and my mom's tennis teacher. I saw how he was so involved in my friend's life and how caring he was towards them , that i decided to take photography. Unfortunately, A long-term sub would be teaching the course due to his absence. So I decided to drop photography because for the past three years I had been anxiously waiting to learn Photography from him. And despite the fact that if he comes back this year he wont be my teacher I still hope to meet him.

Mr. Nino is the heart of Corona High. My sister took his photography class in the 1980's, I took his class in 1990, and my niece and nephew took his class in the 2000's. We all love Mr. Nino, and we were truly blessed to have him as our teacher. As time passes, memories fade and our high school experience becomes blurred. But a few pictures in our mind remain bright and vivid. Going to Nino's class is one of those bright spots. Caring, funny, invested, professional, loyal, humble, and loved by all. I had Mr. Nino first for Spanish 1, during my freshman year at Corona High in 1992. He never spoke any English, encouraging all students to embrace and learn the language. He was a superb teacher.
After having him for Spanish, I pursued his photography elective--more than one semester. He always told me I should invest in a nice camera 2nd ause he said I had an eye for it. He also said the best photos are taken at 6 am.
My younger sister and I were in his photography class together, and years later, our little brother had him for photography.

Mr.Nino is the person any student can go to on a rainy day. As a player under Nino’s team, he always put his heart out for what he did and never underestimated anyones talent, if anything he overestimated and he never failed to see someone’s potential. As an alumni from CHS there has been nothing but good word going around from the time I came in, to the time I left. One of the most important messages Nino taught was that we should never underestimate ourselves, and that we can always push ourselves to do “one more”. I am grateful to be able to have such a great person be my coach for my four years at Corona.
Mr. Nino is truly exceptional. An amazing spirit whose huge and ever present smile I still fondly remember. He was my photo teacher, and Spanish as well since if you wanted to use the photo lab during his Spanish classes you were only allowed to speak Spanish, and photographer for many family & friend's weddings. His commitment to, and the impact on, the students of Corona High is immeasurable.
I am a special education teacher, and Mr. Nino has helped me with many of my students. When one of my students decided to drop out of school during his senior year, I told Mr. Nino about the student. Mr. Nino went to the student's home and talked to the student and his parents. The student returned to school, and graduated with his class. One act of kindness that changed a child's life path.

I was lucky enough to have Mr. Niño as a teacher for my junior year in photography, and sadly, due to his wife being ill he was not able to be on campus physically, but it is evident that he still is very impactful in the photography class this year. He continues to be in contact with the sub but also his former students to ensure the classes this year leave highschool with a greater understanding and knowledge of film photography. His heart cares so much for the students gaining and showing our knowledge, not only in photography, but in very aspect of life. I have had the pleasure working with Jose for the past 12 years at Corona High School in addition to 5 years when I coached tennis at Centennial. He is the most dedicated teacher I have met during my career. He conducts himself with such professionalism and connects with students and staff as well. His love for the game of tennis is evident when he is on the courts. His players are constantly learning and improving. When I was a new coach in CNUSD, Jose helped me immensely even though I coached at a rival high school. I will never forget the kindness he showed me during that time. He is a class act and such an asset to our campus!

I worked with Coach Nino for 6 years at Corona High from 2000-2006. Not only is he an outstanding teacher, he also serves as a mentor to new educators. He never hesitated to offer advice or guidance whenever it was needed or asked for. Coach always has a smile on his face and thoroughly enjoys his job. I am a special education teacher and many students on my caseload were mainstreamed into Coach's class. He made sure that all accommodations/modifications for these students were followed and the majority of them thrived in his classes. The students absolutely enjoyed his class. If you ask any Corona High student from the past several decades about Mr. Nino, they’ll likely tell you about the positive impact that he made on them. I had Mr. Nino through all four years of high school, both as my tennis coach and photography teacher, where he taught me how to perform well on game days and take amazing pictures. However, the most important lesson he taught me was how to lead by example. He truly cares about his students' improvement, both in the classroom and on the tennis court. This, in turn, encourages his students to care just as much about the work and practice that they put in. He also exemplifies class and dignity. He never cheers for an opponent’s mistake, a practice that always rubs off on his players. He never gets angry with his players after a loss. Win or lose, he never changes his attitude; he is always focused on improving for the next match. My favorite aspect about him as a coach is that he is always thinking and searching for new methods and practices for the team. He and I had several discussions about crazy ways we could improve our chances to win matches. Even if our plans didn’t work the way we wanted, his mind is focused on the next possibility. His strong character, wisdom, and leadership have allowed countless students to succeed and enjoy their time in high school, leading to success post-graduation. I am blessed to have Mr. Nino as a mentor and role model, and am a better person thanks to everything that he has taught me.

What a sweet man! He has made a difference in my daughter's life. She has had many wonderful teachers, but she loves this man and learned so much in his class. While she understands that he must be with his wife, she is bummed not to have him on campus her senior year. I look back over the past three years of my high school career to find that I owe many of my successes to one man, Jose Niño. I have had the privilege to know the man as both a coach and a teacher and I can truly say that he is the most influential person in my life. Jose Niño is an excellent example of what is means to be selfless, kind, and resourceful. There was never a dull moment with Niño and he always made his love and passion evident for those who surrounded him. I was Mr. Nino's student in the 1970s. He was an amazing Spanish teacher, who not only taught content well but passed on life lessons on a daily basis. Additionally, Mr. Nino always had a great sense of humor in the classroom, which made students feel comfortable and welcome every day in the classroom setting. In Mr. Nino's class, students were always able to voice our opinions, no matter how controversial they might have been. Although over 40 years have gone by, he continues to be the teacher that today's students respect, appreciate, and love. Jose is the greatest gift to the people of Corona. He has personally impacted multiple generations of students with his positive outlook on life and his ability to create lifelong relationships. What a great man! I am honored to know him.
I attended Corona High graduating in 1995. Although I did not have Coach Niño as a teacher, I knew many who did. He is a teacher that everyone knew and liked on campus. You could see the love and passion he had for teaching and you knew that he cared about all students.
Jose and I were colleagues at Corona High. I was also privileged to have have taught his two sons, Chris and Derek. I cannot think of another teacher who has been a truly positive influence on all of his students than Jose. He was nominated Teacher of the Year more times than I can remember, but he never accepted the honor. He is truly one of God’s angels on earth. I was a very good teacher, and I know I influenced the lives of students, but my accomplishments pale when compared to Jose’s. Every child should have had the grace of being his student. May he live long, and may his legacy, when it is time, live in the lives he has touched, including mine.
Jose is a lifechanger! The number of lives he has touched is impossible to count since it exponentially grows out from each person he directly impacted. He is the reason many students decided to live and not take their own life, because he was ALWAYS there to listen...ALWAYS.
I can't think of anyone better to receive this honor! He was my Spanish teacher and was patient with me as I jumped to his more rigorous program. As a colleague, he is loving and encouraging and always has time to have a conversation! I wish more teachers were like him!
Jose Niño has made such an impact in my life in the short time of four years. He never gives up, he never stops encouraging you (in his own way), he never leaves anyone behind and he’s inspiring.. even motivating.

I work for evening adult ed classes at CHS campus. I've met Mr. Nino at 3 occasions when he brought adults looking for our office so they could register for the adult ESL classes. Mr.Nino has always been very genuinely caring to whomever he met, willing to help with a friendly smile. He is a wonderful gentleman!
Coach Nino is definitely one Coach and teacher to remember while I was a student in Corona High. I never did have the pleasure of having Coach Nino as a teacher or a coach in class, but I knew him because I was simply a student in Corona High. You see, he has this great aura about him that everyone was his friend...And well, everyone Was his friend. In the four years I studied in Corona High, my dad, mom, 2 brothers and sister got to know this funny, friendly, fun, fantastic man whom we all know as Coach Nino. About 5 so years ago, I have had the pleasure of seeing Coach Nino in Home Depot, and he was the same caring man as I remembered him. He asked about my dad, and my whole family. It must’ve been 18 years ago since last time I’ve seen him before that. Coach Nino has a big heart and my family is simply one amongst gazillion families who Coach Nino has taken as part of his heart. With that said, the Regalado family simply have Coach Nino in our hearts always.
Mr. Niño was not only a great teacher to me, but also a great friend. He used to come into the restaurant I worked at for breakfast all the time, even after I graduated, just to say hi. He deserves this.
All former graduates of Corona High ask "Mr. Niño is still here!?" They're surprised to see this kind man keep changing the life of fellow students and the adults that work with and around him
Coach Niño is a wonderful man!! My son had him for tennis all four years in high school and even years later he is someone my son looks up to. We are so thankful we had the opportunity to get to know him. He’s someone that can always make you smile!
Coach Niño, you taught me how to hold a racket and you taught me how to swing one properly. Every 6th period was something I looked forward to after a hard day's work of math, science, and English. You're a very patient person and when it came to coaching, your methods were very unorthodoxed. You did not pressure me much, I think you just kind of knew that if person really wanted to do well in tennis they would pick up the slack for themselves. I think that's what made the environment on the team so good. When I did make mistakes, we would work on fixing them. Failure is something is something an individual can always learn from and it shouldn't be something that people should avoid. It's all a part of the journey. I can't thank you enough for your patient attitude and wisdom of the practicalities of everyday life. All the differences you have made over the many years you have taught have accumulated and have had such a positive effect on this community. I say what I know and I mean what I say. Mr. Niño has demonstrated himself as both an experienced and great man. As a student in his photography class, I am eager to see him return, and have him live up to the wonderful expectations set forth before him. From what I've heard, Mr. Niño is an amazing person. I have not met him personally, but when my sister was in high school, she would talk about how he was one of the best teahers on campus. It's so fascinating to me that his past students still remember him, it shows that he truly is an inspiration to many.

Jose Niño is the most inspiring person I've ever come across. He has been my coach and role model for 4 years now and I feel so lucky to have had the chance to know someone as humble and loving as him. Getting to know Niño has been the highlight of my high school career without a doubt.
When I was in elementary school my mom took tennis lessons from Coach Niño. She loved him and sometimes I got to hang out and watch. This was my first introduction to tennis and even though I'm terrible at tennis, I am an avid fan of the sport. We moved away for several years and it wasn't until my senior year that my family moved again. I went to finish high school in Corona and lived with my grandparents. It was kind of a difficult time for me, but I enrolled in Spanish and was surprised that Coach Niño was also Señor Niño, my new Spanish teacher. People have been mentioning his amazing memory and it's true. I told him that my mom had taken lessons from him and he not only remembered my mom, but also remembered that my sisters and I often came to the courts to watch. Niño, as we called him, was an amazing teacher and for the first time I began to actually gain a grasp of the language and it made me want to learn more. His class was my favorite time of the day because it was such a welcoming environment and made a shy girl feel safe. He taught by the natural approach, like we use today, rather than by rote memorization. It was amazing and I eventually studied Bilingual Education and Latin American studies in college. Frequently, when I'm using my Spanish, either with my students, their parents, friends, or just traveling in Latin America, I think about Niño and wonder if I would be doing what I do without his influence. I truly believe I would not be where I am today if Jose Nino had not been a part of my life. I owe so much to this man that it goes far beyond what can be expressed in words. It is obvious he has touched the lives of many. He is without a doubt the most humble man I have ever met in my life! He has accomplished much more than what many aware. After teaching himself to play tennis he was offered a full scholarship to play tennis at CSUF where he was one of the top players in the state. He is also one of the top high school coaches in the state. There is so much more to share, but I know I may get in trouble. He never feels the need to talk about his success, he thrives off motivating others. "Keep it classy Corona."

Mr. Nino was my Corona High School Spanish teacher for three years (between 1973 and 1976). He was different from most of my teachers. He created a positive classroom environment that engaged the whole class. He had a sense of humor, but also had a very strict side to him, that let you know he had high expectations for his students. One of his often-used phrases was, "That don't make no difference." He used that when students tried to make up excuses when they did not turn in their homework assignments. Since it was fun to learn Spanish, I became pretty fluent by the time I graduated from high school. I ended up continuing my formal studies in Spanish in college and obtained a double major in Spanish and Communicative Disorders. I am so grateful for the foundation he gave me. I would not have continued to study Spanish except that I'd gained a soild foundation and confidence through my high school experience.
I am now employed as a bilingual Speech-Language Pathologist at Garretson Elementary School, located in Corona. Several of my colleagues also attended Corona High School. We were talking a few months ago, and I learned that each one of us thought we were Mr. Nino's favorite student!!! I just need to add one more thing...Mr. Nino was the photographer for my wedding. That's how much I loved, admired and trusted him.
Mr. Nino is one of the nicest and most genuine people that I know. His dedication and selfless demeanor are what makes him an amazing person and what has made him an amazing teacher and coach. I had the pleasure of teaching with him at Corona High School. Everyone who comes in contact with Mr. Nino loves the guy. Mr Nino is a household name in our family. He was my brothers Photography teacher, my sister, my husband and my sister in-law's Tennis Coach and my wedding photographer. When we got married my husband worked with one of Mr. Nino's sons and we had invited him to the wedding. I am unsure as to how Mr. Nino knew we didn't have a professional photographer, but some how he knew. He showed up with his equipment and took pictures of all of our family together and individually with us. Then he developed them and gave us the pictures and negatives. This was a gift that can never be repaid. We will always have beautiful wedding pictures, and I am forever grateful.

I returned to visit Niño a few years after I graduated figuring he wouldn't remember me. He saw me and got a huge smile on his face and gave me the biggest hug. Mr. Nino was first my tennis coach then my photography teacher. He was my coach while I played for the city. He taught me to like a sport. Mr Nino was very nurturing and kind. He's a genuine man with a big heart for everyone he becomes in contact with. He deserves this award for than anyone.
It's been over 20 years since my high school days and Mr. Nino is the only faculty member whom I can say I remember after all these years. Not only because he instilled a love and appreciation for photography but he also taught me responsibility and formed a bond without even realizing it. He posted pictures of puppies from a stray dog he found in his yard during class one day and asked if anyone was willing to take on the joys of caring for a puppy. I showed interest in one and he and his son brought her over to my house one morning. A friendship was formed that lasted over 13 years. So many fond memories with my dog and everytime I come across a picture of her I think of that morning that changed my life when Mr. Nino brought her to me.
Mr.Niño deserves the world and even more. He's loved by everyone that's ever met him. He's such an amazing teacher and even greater person. His heart is so big. Niño has helped students in so many ways. He's not just been a teacher but also someone to talk to. Always willing to help his students and listen to them with whatever the situation is. Everybody knows and loves Mr. Niño! I have grown up knowing who Mr. Niño is. He played tennis with my grandparents and always asks me how they are doing. He gave me my first tennis lesson. He knows so many people in our community and is always getting stopped by people to say hello. And he always takes the time to stop and smile and chat and makes sure that the person knows that they are important and valued. I have taught at Corona High with him for 18 years and that sounds pretty impressive until you realize he's been teaching almost three times as long! The first time I met Nino in 2014 (of course, I had heard of him before then) he asked my maiden name since he knew I was a "Panther". When I told him, he asked if my brother's name was David and if he played football here at Corona High. That man has an amazing memory! My brother went to Corona High in the mid 70's! Since then, I see why he is a "legend". I've had many opportunities to spend time with him. His outlook on life is motivating to anyone. Even though he is always moving fast, he will always take the time to make you laugh and feel interesting and important! His life stories of overcoming the challenges and prejudices of the changing times are so inspiring. The way that he invests a little of himself into every person he meets is what makes him a "Life Changer". You walk away for the better having him as your friend. Hands down, he's a true winner!!

Mr. Nino is a big presence on our campus. His passion for teaching, his care for the students, his positive energy for the staff...Corona High School would not be the same without him. Mr. Niño is one of the most recognized teachers at Corona High. He puts so much care towards the students in campus and he is one that will put students as his priorities. Unfortunately, his wife recently had a set back with her health. Due to the constant care his wife needs, Mr. Niño has been out of his classroom. Even though his photography classes have substitute teachers, he is constantly communicating with them over the phone to make sure that his new students still have a pleasurable photography experience and even goes as far as to recording videos of himself giving mini lessons for the substitutes teachers to play for his students. Even with his major setbacks, Mr. Niño still fights towards having students at Corona High have an enjoyable experience.

I was Mr. Niño's aid for a photography class my senior year of high school and while I remember that he got "passionate" sometimes, he always reverted back to his always-on smile. He should have kept me busy with work but early on in the semester he noticed that if he didn't give me work I would sit there an read and I think he chose to nurture my reading habit because I finished a lot of books in his class. In January of this year I moved to Orange. One afternoon on my way home from work I pulled over to take a phone call and happened to run into him. Apparently I stopped near where his wife was staying. He had just left after visiting her and I saw him walking across the parking lot. He looked somber. I hesitated at first, but still yelled "Mr. Niño!" and he looked up and came over to say hi and immediately put on a smile. He mentioned his wife's condition, and that she was recovering, and while I imagine that it was not a comfortable position for him he still took the time to ask how I was doing, all while keeping that smile going. Thank you Mr. Niño for letting me read instead of making me work, it helped make me an avid reader and it certainly had a part in making me who I am today, and thank you for always keeping a smile on your face! It makes the world a better place for the rest of us and you should know that it doesn't go unnoticed! Mr. Nino was the grandfather I never had. To say that he wasn’t one of the closest people to me during my childhood would be an understatement. He has been my coach since I was 11 years old and during that time he not only taught me things about tennis but also who I have the ability to be. I am now a mother and I couldn’t be more thankful for all of his guidance. Selfless, loving, and effortlessly a social influencer.
Nino will always have a place in my heart. I met him before high school and ended up playing on his girls tennis team all four years of high school. I also had the pleasure of being in his photography class. Nino is one of the most caring, loving, and selfless men I have ever met. He was always there for me when I needed words of encouragement. He was always rooting for his students and went above and beyond to make sure his students were sucessful even when they didn't want success for themselves. He most definitely deserves this award.
I loved Mr. Nino ! He was one of my favorite teachers. He helped my family do a slide show for my grandparents 50th wedding Anniversary party and we'll never forget that. I played volleyball and we would always share a bus for away games with girls tennis. He would always make a point to see how we did or come watch us if they finished early. I had Mr. Nino as a photographer teacher for several years of high school (2003-2005). More than ten years later, I can still proudly say, without doubt, that he is one of the best educators I've ever had the pleasure of learning from. Not only is he successful as a teacher and as an amazing tennis coach, but he has always gone above and beyond as being a shining light for all students, of all genders, races, sexual orientations, religion, and any other identity. He is a person who is always encouraging and always motivating, but his no nonsense personality (with a HUGE dose of funny) assures that every student feels compelled to do their best. Many of the best educators in the world have the unique ability to make students feel like their own successes or failures are also the successes and failures of their teacher. Mr. Nino is one of those educators. What I've known from the many friends and fellow students who were lucky enough to learn from him, whether they were 4.0 students or 2.0 students, is that no one ever wanted to let him down. No one wanted to disappoint because he is a man who commands respect and honor from doing nothing more than giving his all to his career as a teacher. I can't imagine how many thousands of students have had their lives positively changed by Mr. Nino, and the thousands more people who have experienced the positive ripple effects from those inspired by him, but I know the numbers are great. I know many of us carry around a great sense of wisdom, knowledge and humor that we were extremely lucky to pick up from this man who treats every student like one of his own children.
Jose Nino has been a huge ally and friend of the Puente Program. He is a man who has mentored and shaped our fellow students. He has helped to organize guest speakers and has presented his own powerful story. He is an inspiration to many.
I agree that he deserves recognition. José Niño is a pillar in our community! He is very personable and it is evident that he is genuine and cares about all his students.
Mr. Nino was my high school photography teacher and I remember going into that class excited because I had heard so many great things about him. I had no idea how to process film or even compose a photo, but by the end of that year I could somewhat roll my own film in a black bag and almost met his tough criteria when it came to composing a photograph. Despite all that I learned about the art of film photography, those lessons aren't what stuck with me most when I graduated. What stuck with me was the way Mr. Nino had made me feel as a student. He made me feel like I could accomplish anything in and out of his classroom. When I messed up a project he would tease me, but then send me back into the dark room and tell me to try again. He never discouraged me or any of the other students in his class. He is one of the teachers that I would come back to visit even into my second year of college. The environment he created for us in his classroom allowed us to express ourselves creatively and learn lessons that we could take with us beyond the realm of photography. I am forever grateful for all that Mr. Nino gave to me as a student and will never forget how much light he brought to my senior year of high school.
Mr. Nino is the most humble and dedicated man I know. He taught during my parents tenure when they were students at Corona High School, and to this day they have nothing but exceptional comments to say about him. I have known him for over 15 years myself and replicate my parents thoughts and comments. Jose Nino is well deserving of this award!!!

Jose Nino is an extraordinary person in many respects. He has always been friendly to me a co-worker. A greatly desired teacher by students. Students wanted to be in his classes even though he had very high expectations for them to meet. He is admired by his peers and a great example to them of faithful and loyal service to the students of Corona High School for decades.
I have NEVER met a more PAWSITIVE(Corona High term) teacher in my life and I am a 3rd generation teacher!!! Mr Nino is 100% behind each and every student that walks onto this campus. He goes above and beyond anything required of a teacher in order to ensure success for the students of Corona High by being available for ALL students during each moment of his "free" time which includes weekends. Mr. Nino has helped students with job applications, college applications, ASVAB testing, Financial Aid forms, and just plain ol' figuring out what to do after high school. He is always the 1st to volunteer any help to many of our homeless and poverty level students. I have been on the Corona High campus for 13 years and I know for a fact that Mr. Nino is the MOST respected faculty member continually from year to year. Jose Nino is deserving of ALL and EVERY award that he is being considered for. And if there is an award that will help him with his current situation, Mr. Nino is the right choice as the recipient.
Jose Nino is my peer at Corona High School. He knew his students on a personal level and that connection helped many students who did not have a mentor in thir life. He helped motivate those students who did not feel school was important, and helped encourage students to excell by getting them involved in sports or photography.

This man was my daughter’s tennis coach during high school. He cared about his athletes so much. He cared about the parents so much. He is the reason why she did tennis. He is an amazing man. Years later, when we see him, he is still so interested in her life. There is no one who deserves this more than this man.

Mr Nino has had a big influence on me class of 84. I was surprised he is still teaching after all these years not surprised at all he has such big influences on others. A very kind and nurturing man. I still remember him to this day. Love his Spanish class he make learning fun

Mr. Nino is someone who I consider my hero. I was on the Corona High girls tennis team for four years and still keep in contact with Mr. Nino since my graduation in 2016. Mr. Nino is the most caring, forgiving, and kind soul I have ever met. Even though difficult times, Mr. Nino is still committed to the students at Corona High and keeping the tennis team alive. I have been so blessed to have been a student of Mr. Nino, and I hope that the love he has given out to the Corona community will be received through this recognition.
Mr. Nino is an amazing man. My youngest daughter played tennis for him and also took his photography class. I got to know him through going to tennis matches. An amazing teacher and coach with an incredible sense of humor, Nino has found a way to stay motivated and energetic for so many years in a profession that can make that difficult. As a teacher and coach myself, he is one of my role models. Nino's positive outlook and willingness to be a mentor for students all of these years are blessings so many students from Corona High are grateful for. My admiration for him is boundless and I feel privileged to know him.

Mr. Niño was my high school tennis coach and even though I had never played a day in my life, he saw potential in me. If it weren't for him I would have gone through high school without the new found love for tennis. He was encouraging on and off the courts. I was also a student in his photography class. Tennis and photography are two of Niños passions, and he was able to share them with countless students over the years. He has made a very positive impact on my life and has shown me never to give up. He really did change my life for the better. He is an awesome coach, teacher and above all friend. I never had the pleasure of having Mr. Niño as a teacher in high school but I recognize the difference he has made in the Corona community. Whenever I saw him around school he always had a big smile on his face, he inspires so many around him!

Nino was the best coach, teacher, and mentor. All of the students respected him on campus because he actually cared and made it known. He would remember the smallest detail about every student and his or her family (whether he had them in his class or not), never ceasing to make students feel special and important. Nino definitely is a life-changer and he has proven to be throughout his many, many years of teaching!

I had him as a tenis coach.....years ago. I graduated in 1975. He was so encouraging to me. At the time I was very heavy. He was so motivating that I lost weight and continued to play the game. He would always make us run U's and W's. I taught the game to my autistic son hand he made it to first on the ladder in High School. Can't say enough about Mr. Nino and the game of tennis
I have been blessed to not only learn from this man, but to have my children learn from him as well. Coach Nino has a keen eye for talent in the world of photography and has a very encouraging way of teaching. He not only instructs as a photographer, but as a model of creative and positive thinking. He coaches in such a way, that if the student/athlete does not succeed, they feel as though they will be expected to learn from failure and further prepare to succeed to express their respect and affection for their coach and to enjoy the intrinsic rewards of their success. As one of Jose's favorite sayings "Proud of you" flows from his mouth, one can only feel rewarded, but, still motivated to continue to work hard for this man's respect. As a teacher who emulates Mr. Nino's positive influence on students, I continue to strive to learn from him. I send cell phone photos daily for critique and instruction to further 'see' the world through the eyes of a master. Although thus far, I have shown only average success, I feel confident in my ability to improve and in turn, succeed, and hear those wonderful words of encouragement from Nino, " Proud of you". As Jose continues to be challenged by new responsibilities, I have no doubt he will continue to succeed and "master" his task at hand, as in his humble way he may claim he is doing his best but can be better, I would borrow a favorite Nino response and say " of course".
Mr Nino has touched the lives of every member of my family and has become a part of our everyday lives since his wives unfortunate decline in health. He coached myself and my 2 daughters tennis, he taught myself, my son and daughter photography, and he worked with my husband for more than a decade. He is so inspirational to the students whose lives he has touched on the tennis court and in the classroom. Now his dedication to his wife is truly phenomenal. Since she has transitioned back home after suffering a stroke and remains unable to walk, he has been her sole caregiver. She has never had a need to return to the hospital since. This fact alone is remarkable if you have any experience with people who have such a drastic change in their lives. He has suspended the end of his career to take care of her 24/7. That means also taking on all the household chores and sleeping 4-6 hours of interrupted sleep a day. All with a smile still of his face and gratitude for the ability to provide what his wife needs.

I remember I had Mr. Nino back in the day. I was a horrible photographer but he was nice to me anyways. I grew up in Foster Care but having a caring teacher like him gave me good childhood memories.I Have nothing but fond memories of him. Good guy.
Sr. Nino has placed a forever stamp on the lives of so many. Personally, his work ethic has been a shining example in my life.
Mr. Nino was by far the greatest teacher I ever had. He could give you an F and he'd still be your favorite teacher. I graduated in 2002 and can still hear him say, "don't trip, you might fall." I looked forward to his class everyday and learned so much. To this day, I apply techniques that I learned in his class to taking photos of my kids with an iPhone. All around great man!

Jose Nino is so much more than a teacher and coach, he is a mentor through both word and action. His love for others is displayed consistently through his selflessness. His humor is unmatched and brings light to all of those around him. There really aren’t words to convey what a truly remarkable man he is. His passion for tennis and photography has impacted so many lives, including mine. Because of Jose and his investment in my life, I went on to be a successful college athlete and I am now a high school teacher. I have been blessed to have Jose in my life as both a coach and co-worker and he continues to inspire me personally and professionally. Nino is an amazing teacher, an amazing coach and an amazing man.

Mr.Nino has been an important man in my life. From childhood (tennis and leadership) to adulthood (photography and wisdom), he has shaped me for the better. Cannot think of a teacher more deserving of this award. However, I know he wouldn't trade this this award for 1 student relationship, even me.
Truly a great teacher, everything he does is from the heart. I had so much fun in his class, because everything we did was hands on. He cared about student lives, what we did on the weekend and who is dating who. He has touched so many lives in a positive way. He lives and breathes for his family and students. This would be awesome to see him accept this award, he deserves it.

Me. Nino was my photography teacher, I graduated in 2011. If I was ever proud of anything I did in an art driven class it was always shot down by a teacher who didn't agree but not Mr. Nino. He believed me and the work that I did and I was lucky enough to get two photographs on his wall of photos. I've visited him since graduation and am due to visit again soon. Not only is he an amazing teacher but he's an all around great person which isn't easy to come by. This man made a huge difference in my life and is responsible for a good amount of the confidence I have now. Anyone who comes across him for a even a short moment in time to will be grateful.
I had the pleasure of having Mr. Nino as my photography teacher my senior year at corona high and never have I seen someone spend so much time making sure his students enjoyed his class and retained the information he presented to them. I’m not sure if he remembers me as he’s had so many students throughout his career but I remember him and often think about how amazing he was when I’m reminiscing about high school. His class was the one I looked forward to most that year and whenever I come in contact with newer students I always ask if they have him as their teacher and if they hadn’t had him I always recommend they take his class if given the opportunity. He is an amazing man and truly deserves this award.

Nino was such a phenomenal teacher and coach. I took him for Spanish I and had him as a coach at the same time. He refused to speak English to me and coached me in Spanish. It was such a great way to teach me, make me laugh, and get me just mad enough to learn my Spanish.

As any former CHS students knows, Mr Nino’s class was always the hardest to get into; he was that highly requested. Not only was he a phenomenal photography teacher, he was an inspiring human being always supporting his students dreams. Every time I walked into his class I would drastically change into a good mood. He brought so much laughter and positivity to the class, everyone loved him. You could talk to him about anything; academic, family, relationships, sports, etc. and he never judged. He always offered great, caring advice.
Yes, there are tons of amazing and inspiring teachers out there but Mr Nino was more than amazing, he was/is a life changer. Cheers to you Mr Nino in all your accomplishments. You will forever be my most memeorsble and favorite teacher.
