Dr. Sameano Porchea Bond was nominated by Tanya Dooley, the parent of a student.
Dr. Porchea Bond inherited an entire group of eighth grade students who were woefully unprepared for Algebra. When the students were in seventh grade, their school struggled to find and retain solid math teachers. As a result, the students received little to no instruction or knowledge with regards to math. In came Dr. Porchea Bond. She listened to her students' parents and vowed to bridge the gap for the students. She did that and more!
"My son was a student who loved math and science until his seventh grade year," said Dooley. "Being bored in the classroom...caused him to lose interest in math. Dr. Porchea Bond helped him find his love for math again by encouraging him, praising him when appropriate, and never letting him quit or get discouraged."
Dr. Porchea Bond provided many incentives to keep her students motivated and interested. She taught the material in a variety of ways in an effort to reach each student, regardless of their learning style. She provided real-life situations so students could apply the mathematical concepts being taught. This is key because we often hear youth say they do not understand the importance of certain math concepts because they were not taught or introduced to the real-world application.
Lastly, Dr. Porchea Bond provided information on life after middle school, which included entrance criteria into certain high school programs, scholarship information, and careers which leveraged math. The information she shared with was greatly appreciated by the students and the parents.
"Dr. Porchea Bond demonstrated genuine care for the whole student," said Dooley. "The students not only felt that, but responded to it in a positive way."
Coming from a non safe environment my mother has loved and cherished me. Even though I’m not her biological son, I still feel like it. Yes we might have some hic-ups here or there, but I know she only wants the best from me. Growing up I’ve learned how to talk and deal with people, good and or bad. My mom changed my life for the greater good. If any person was to get this award it most definitely should be her. I remember when I was little my mom would try to get me into every summer camp around, every program around, every everything. Of course at the beginning I didn’t want to go, because “I don’t like art”, or “I don't like reading”. But being the mother she was and still is, she pushed me. Not in an evil, hit your kid kind of way; but by explaining why I should do things. Now I know a lot of parents aren’t perfect, not even mine. But I still believe that my mom is doing the best she can. She was a math teacher, then went to work for schools at a higher level, then went back to teaching. She always told me that she loved teaching, and I believe her (Knowing her 3 hour lectures). She taught me everything I know now. If you read the other letters you will see that my mom has changed many lives. As I said before I was born in a non friendly environment. At the age 4 she adopted me, and took me in. She would then go on and be my “mommy” for 10 more years. She has done a lot for me. She did get a better paying job elsewhere, but she stayed because I already had friends, and connections here in Maryland. She sacrificed a lot also. I’m happy God put me with her, and not anybody else. I didn’t know a lot of things for a long time, I thought that this world was nothing but sunshine and rainbows. But my mom was able to explain that that was not the truth. She did indeed try to hide the news, and the messed up things people did. But over time I got older and she wasn’t able to hide everything. I know this letter is crazy and all out of sorts but I can't explain my mother any other way. She is caring, loving, supportive, knowledgeable, amazing, and even courageous. I'm pretty sure that there are other mothers, and fathers, and teachers out there that changed people's lives as well, but I know for a fact that my mom is the best.
In 7th grade I really didn’t have a passion or interest in math , but in 8th grade when I had Dr.Sam as my math teacher she made math fun , she made it understanding and clear to me , she had many different ways to show math and make it fun , she was also a great person she had a nice heart and was funny and understandable of everything, she’s a great teacher that is hard to come pass!
Life Changer! If we still used dictionaries, Dr. Sam's photo would be there. The first time I recall Dr. Sam standing out was when a student "Dr. Sam taught me..." My response was who is Dr. Sam? In the field of education, educators typically are referred by their last name. Dr. Sam broke that stereotype. I have observed students eagerly engaged in Dr. Sam's classes. I would step in - just for fun, a break, or brush up on math skills myself. It always amazed me when Dr. Sam's students jumped at the chance to prove what they are learning. Dr. Sam incorporates the latest technology and relatable examples during her lessons. She utilizes her resources by networking with local businesses and the community to encourage financial support for her classes and the school. A prime example is a math book project she has been working on with students. This is obviously giving the students useful life skills. I cant' wait for my signed copy from Dr. Sam and her students!

Dr. Bond began teaching in the Math Department at my school 4 years ago, when she accepted a position as our 8th grade Math Teacher. She brought with her an extensive background in data analytics and the ability to use meaningful data to increase student achievement. Along with a positive attitude and an engaging personality.
Dr. Bond's thorough preparation and willingness to work diligently was evident from the outset. A variety of media were used within lessons, and tasks took many forms which accommodated students of varying abilities. High-level questioning techniques were employed to broaden the students’ thinking. In addition to encouraging students to reflect upon their learning, Dr. Bond herself regularly used her teaching experiences as opportunities for growth and skill refinement.
She still aspired to have her students achieve more by interacting with lessons in a highly engaging and innovative way. Dr. Bond sought out to work with local businesses to sponsor a technology grant and as a result she managed to secure a monthly grant to enhance the use of technology in her classroom.Through this grant she was able to purchase multiple 42 inch TVs, Apple TVs & iPads as well as student awards, certificates and trophies. Through these enhanced technology features Dr. Bond was able to reach even her most reluctant learners. Dr. Bond is truly a life changer!

I think my true love for not just education but for others began in the 7th grade in then Ms. Porchea’s class. Dr. Porchea Bond cared for me in a vital time in my life, took special interest in my life, and played a huge part in shaping my view of self. I looked forward to going to her class knowing that it was a safe place to learn, grow, and to be me. She shared a mutual respect for her students and pushed us to be better than we thought we could be. I count it a blessing and a privilege not just to have learned math under her but also life lessons that have stayed with me all my life.
Hmm, what can I say about Dr. Sameano Porchea Bond? Well fist off, I knew her as Ms. Porchea. She was my 7th grade math teacher. She was my favorite teacher at Sneed Middle School down in Florence, South Carolina. Such a outstanding human being and a inspiration to all. As a lost, insecure and troublesome teenager, she kept me in check. She saw something in me that I didn't see in myself. She never gave up on me and still to this day I owe her so much appreciation. I wouldn't be a successful business owner and mathematician if it wasn't for her.
As a middle school counselor, I had numerous opportunities to watch Dr. Bond teach by engaging her students. She encouraged them to compete with themselves, not other classmates. She instituted a self-monitoring tool by which students could mark their progress and recognize their strengths and weaknesses. She regularly praised and rewarded students, not for being the best, but rather for showing improvement. She is a great motivator. She kept parents informed and went to great lengths to make them part of the students' support circle. I personally witnessed the enthusiasm students had for her classes.
I had the honor of working with "Dr. Sam" in the last two years of my 35-year career in education. My role was as an assistant principal with supervisory responsibilities over her, so my comments may be different from most. There are many times in the life of an administrator that we get worn down by the many responsibilities we face in a day, some even thankless tasks that make us question, "Why am I here and I why am I doing this?" My solution when I encountered such doldrums was to go into a classroom of a teacher who I respected and one in which I knew learning and teaching was taking place! More often than not, I'd find myself in Dr. Sam's classroom watching her skillfully facilitate students in their own learning. I'd sit back in a strictly informal observing mode and bask in the reassurance that I was indeed in the right profession and that there are great teachers who can pull the best out of students. Dr. Sam infused technology into her lessons, effectively used stations, differentiated her lessons, and made sure the students held themselves accountable for their own learning. I'd be amazed that the students who had been disciplinary concerns in the hallway, cafeteria, or another class were fully engaged instructionally in her class. Many times as I entered the room I'd intuitively look for her behind her desk. Of course she'd not be there; she'd be in a group with the students! As impressive as her work with students was, her collaborative work with her colleagues was just as admirable. Her addition to our staff energized a mathematics department in need of a "fresh approach." I'd be remiss if I did not state how much parents loved the addition of Dr. Sam to our staff. Her transparency and open communication style via multiple streams were truly appreciated by them. Without hesitation or reservation, I recommend Dr. Sam for this very prestigious award as she truly and positively changed the lives of so many.
I have known Dr. Sameano Bond for the last 10 years. She is a consummate professional, wonderful mother and awesome friend. Dr. Sam is one of the most humble people I have encountered. She has a genuine desire to unselfishly help people to achieve and grow. She has made a significant difference in my life I am grateful for our connection. Dr. Sam's devote belief in God and moral and ethical beliefs are evident in all she does. I am proud to call Dr. Sam my friend and sister in Christ.
This Queen is one, if not my favorite pre-college teacher I had. She challenges you to achieve a higher level of greatness that we all possess. She knows how plus when to nurture her students, and she's a great disciplinarian if need be. This award could not have been given to a more deserving Teacher!
I have known Dr. Bond for the past 3 years. She is my colleague and friend. We have shared many moments of achievement, laughter, and some disappointments. I have told her before God has purposely made her just for people like me. She is honest, authentic and genuine. She strives to bring passion into every project, job, event, hobby, and relationship. She stretches her students to become more than just the limits of their textbook but to create something that has never been done before. She always sees the best in people, no matter their faults. I am so glad my colleague and friend is being recognized. She is the most selfless person I know.
I've known Dr. Porchea for 3 years, and it's been a pleasure to know and see her work. She's a great teacher and a great person to work with and know. She's a team player and wants all her students to be successful and do well in life. She's very easy to work with, approachable, compassionate, shows empathy has high expectations and standards for all her students. Of the students that she and I have shared they all respect her and know not to play games with her. She's dependable, honest, gives great common sense logical advice on life and just things in general. She definitely deserves this award without hesitation.
Dr. Porchea is an amazing mathematics teacher who makes the learning experience fun and exciting for her students. Students leave her course knowing that they can excel academically because of their new content knowledge, perseverance to solve real world problems and the ability to apply those new skills in a variety of integrated content areas!
Dr. Porchea Bond is an awesome teacher whom I have had the pleasure of working with for some time. She is that teacher that goes above and beyond for her students. She is able to integrate technology into her lessons, which gets the kids excited and interested to participate in learning. Dr. Bond is full of energy and innovative ideas that can shift any lesson into a full fledged hands on activity. Her style is seamless and inclusive of all students which results in students being totally engaged and enjoying learning. Aside from being a dynamic teacher she is an equally dynamic person that always have everyone's best interest in mind. She is very deserving of the lifer changer award and more for her levels of expertise and compassion for others.
I have had the honor of knowing Dr. Porchea for a very long time. We attended the same high school and same college for our undergraduate degree and our first master’s degree. During our first few years of teaching, we also worked at the same middle school.
Dr. Porchea has always had the drive to achieve and conquer any challenges that came her way. She was loved by students for her creativity and loved by staff for her willingness to assist others. I would not have made it through Statistics and Probability without her. When I would struggle with this graduate class, she became my unofficial tutor.
On a personal note, I’ve always admired my friend for her ambition and commitment to education. Dr. Porchea is a jewel. It has been pleasure to be her colleague and her friend. I wish for her the best!

I met Dr. Bond 3 years ago. She really cares about people and always look out for their best interest. She is very dedicated to the well being of not only her students, but to whomever she comes in contact with. She is very honest with you. What really impresses me the most is she will not hesitate to ask questions or help out others when it is needed. She always sees the good in everyone.
Dr. Sam has been a powerful influence within and outside the classroom. We’ve witness her dedication to not just our children, but the community at large.
My wife and I have engaged her on multiple occasions to seek guidance and advice on best way to proceed on educational matters with our children. She could have stopped at just a broad list of recommendations. However, she assisted and followed up with us.
She has proven herself worthy of not only this accolade, but many other honors associated with her profession
Dr. Sam is an extraordinary teacher! My son and many of his classmates struggled with eight grade math. During his seventh grade year, our school struggled to find and retain qualified math teachers. So the students were unprepared to move to the next level as they did not have a strong understanding of fundamental math principles and operations.
I met Dr. Sameano Porchea Bond in grad school back in 2001. She probably does not realize how much she changed my life. Even though I am older, a fact that she will not let me forget, she has helped me in ways that make me grateful I am her best friend, the sister I chose. While in school we often took classes together and her never give up attitude pulled me along until we both graduated with PhDs. Shortly after grad school, she moved out of town and began an adventure in the Midwest and because she did, I realized that I, too, could move away from my familiar. I have witnessed her experience trials and tribulations and I am in awe of her perseverance. Don’t misunderstand, I know there were times she wanted to give up, but she DID NOT. She kept putting one foot in front of the other. I know she does not realize the mark she continues to have on my life but my life is so much better because she is in it.
Hi, my name is Kinza. I had Dr. Porchea as a teacher in 8th grade and honestly i was so happy to hear about this nomination but i wasn’t surprised. Math was my weakest spot before I had her as a teacher. She gave me the opportunity to change that. But there is so much more to her. I don’t think I've had a teacher like her that I was able to really trust and connect to. She taught me so much more than just math, she taught me to see the better in any situation, she taught me to be ready, to tackle anything, or just to be ready for anything that life throws at me. So i knew that if i ever had a tough day i could go to her and trust her to completely change how i felt. But, even through those bad days, she saw so much in me and if it wasn’t for her i wouldn’t have had the experience of being in SGA. To be honest, I would be having a very different experience in highschool, but because of her it's so much more different than i imagined. She completely changed my mindset and I'm so thankful for that. Even though she was a big part of my life, I’m so glad I've had the chance to be a little part of hers. I don't know how i got lucky to have known such a special person, she changed my life in so many ways and im absolutely and entirely grateful to her for the <3 I miss you so much, thank you!!

What a amazing individual she has a heart so big it's amazing. I love her she took me under her wings in a time I needed someone, God allowed her to cross my path I'm so grateful. She is willing to help everybody. I can see why she is so concerned with students in the prince george system because she so serious about children education goals and life. This women of God is well deserve of all the reginition and praise given her. God will continue to take her to higher heights because she has so much love for people. She denostrate geniue care concern love for all she will go out of her way to help other, she will check up daily making sure or asking if everything ok.
Dr Sam, as the kids fondly call her, came into my life several years ago as a colleague. I cannot say enough about how inspiring she is as a teacher. I had the pleasure of working with her as a library media specialist. This gave me the unique opportunity to see how she implements curriculum while using me as a resource. She would use my suggestions to help motivate and Inspire our students and in return she would share her expertise with me. She is one of the few colleagues that I could speak openly with about curriculum,
behavior management and the day today management of our profession. I truly miss working with her and I know she is an asset in her current position. My comments only begin to describe her passion and love for teaching and I aspire to maintain my own passion for education at her level.

I've known Mena (What I call her) since I was a little girl and her brother is one of my best friends. I honestly can't say that she has changed much other than growing older and maturing into who some know as Dr. Bond. I knew YEARS ago and told her that she would go to school forever! Seeing her as a mom and now wife only adds to her versatility and resilience as she continues to be a vessel for all she intends to help and inspire. Congratulations!

I met Dr. Bond when I transferred to a new middle school. We taught the same subject- math??! As she spoke or asked it was always with the concern for students. She cared about hem as a person not just a body in her class. She is passionate about their learning the subject but also learning life skills. She is always thinking of ways to best serve to help them to grow academically. If we were to interview her students, they would say they knew she cared about them. Dr. Sam engages her students from day one. She guides her students daily to believe in themselves in a subject that many students in the nation struggle. She has applied for grants that make her classroom technologically advanced, leaving no stone unturned as to why her students are not successful.
She commands attention and focus and gives it. Her students understand where they stand in her class and within the curriculum. She meets with students individually and makes time beyond the school day to meet with families.
Personally she has raised an amazing life for her son. She has created a family bond (no pun intended) that may be “non traditional” but is an exemplary example of a parent who advocates for her son without devaluing educators and holds all educators accountable for their commitment to all students and the system protocols/ responsibilities. Dr. Sam holds herself to the same liability. No matter the situation, she has always been a part of the solution And stays positive.

As a foreign student moving to the United States, I was anxious about settling in the school system. The anxiety surrounded settling in a new environment and culture and also making sure I was my best in the classes I had. All my life I had hated math, it had proved too difficult for me to understand and even at school back in my home country, I always got put in the lower classes for math. This was a huge frustration for a me as I always excelled beyond and above in other subjects but never math. So I had built up this relationship of hate and resentment with it, because no matter how much I tried, I never seemed to get it.
Coming into Dr. Porchea class would dramatically change that for me. Not only did she welcome me and make our math class feel like a family. But for the first time in my life, I actually understood what math was about, it was so bizarre, I was actually looking forward to math class and what new methods she was going to teach us with. Not only that but I was becoming the person who could seat down with her math homework and before starting, not get frustrated. I was becoming the person who could help another person if they did not understand.
If someone had told me that would be about me two months earlier, I would have laughed in their face, and told them they were delusional. I could even explain math solutions and how I got there.
This class would prove to be very important and laid the foundation for the other math classes I would be going into in high school, instead of going in with a bad or “I will never understand it” attitude. I went in there ready to sit and listen and eager instead of frustrated to try over and over again if I didn’t understand it, instead of already tagging myself a failure.
I even remember back in eight grade when I would talk with friends in my class, and they would tell me they didn’t have a math teacher the last year and that they were catching up bu they all sang the same tune as mine, they had never had such an amazing and involved teacher.
Dr. Porchea almost always comes up whenever I’m discussing the most impactful teachers in my life. She was so kind, yet firm with us, always expected the best and only the best from us, gave us any and every resource she could to make sure we were our best, was always patient with us and rewarded us when we did give it our all. She stimulated our competitive spirits and gave us her all.
Because of Mrs. Porchea I can now contently pursue a career as either a Financial Analyst or Mechanical Engineer, because now I love math, no matter the type of future teachers I get or turmoils I come across, because of her I’ve built a love for it. I don’t have to hold myself back saying I’m not good at this or I’m not good with math in relation to both careers because I’ve built of a system of belief with math in which there is always a way to understand it.
Dr Sam molded my future, she is and will always be a life changer.
I believe and pray that Dr. Sameano Porchea Bond should win the LifeChanger of the year award because she is one of the most innovative teachers that I have ever seen. I have had the pleasure of seeing some of the work she has done in her classes at Benjamin Tasker. She reminded me of the teacher Erin Gruwell of Long Beach, California in which she was portrayed in the movie Freedom Writers. The exception was Dr. Bond taught Math while Ms. Gruwell taught English. She had several of her classes created a book on understanding math. She taught and engaged her students by using fun and new techniques. I think she is absolutely phenomenal. I truly wish that I had a math teacher like her when I was in school. I would have been much more excited about math. She is leading-edge, original and fresh! I truly believe that not only is she a life changer but a game changer as well.

Hands down one of the best teachers in my schooling. Kept us involved with unique activities and was extremely relatable to ALL students.
Dr. Sam provided instructional leadership to our entire staff. I was in awe of her ability to present her data analysis in a way that I, a language arts teacher, could completely reproduce. She inspired me to develop my own data progress monitoring sheet with my students, providing them ownership and participation in their academic progress. I am forever grateful for her knowledge and inspiration!
Just want to take a minute to make a huge shout out and give thanks to (formerly) Ms. Porchea aka Sameano Bond! The best friend I ever found in a teacher and probably the best teacher I've had in my life. She always has a way of getting your attention and making the learning process fun and easy to pick up! She always had that wonderful smile on everyday when you walked in, or past her classroom! Dr. Sam as he is affectionately called by her students and colleagues is truly an asset to us. She goes above and beyond for her students to make sure they have every tool they need to succeed in math. She partners with the community to help get the tools that she was not able to get through school funding. In speaking with her you knew she was humble. She never let the 'Dr' title go to her head. She has worked extremely hard and her students always came first. She has truly been a life changer to so many students and even her colleagues. She deserves this honor.
Math had always been a tough subject for me, but my eighth grade year was the hardest for me when it came to math.I was a new student at Benjamin Tasker Middle School before school ended. My old math teacher was difficult to understand and hard to work with.
Even though I have been at Tasker for a month or so, Dr. Porchea Bond is definitely one of the best teachers I've had in a while. She was easy to understand, open, tried new strategies in the classroom, asked us questions to test our understanding, showed that she cared about us, and was so much fun! She really helped me understand math concepts that i didn't get before. I could go back home and complete math assignments without stressing or constantly doubting my work. I am grateful for her hard work and I will not forget her. That is why I believe Dr. Porchea Bond is a Life Changer!
I met “Dr. Sam” 7 years ago when she was my boss for a brief time before she moved on as the head of a team of editors in the Measurement Services (= test development) division of the American Nurses Credentialing Center. She was candid, caring, committed, and passionate... all qualities that are essential to being a life-changing teacher and role model. For 30 years, I’ve lived with a high school teacher, so I know the level of self-sacrificing devotion it takes to succeed in this career.In addition, at age 60 now, ! still remember my middle school algebra teacher, who helped me understand, enjoy and feel confident about (at least that one corner of) math. Thank God for passionate teachers, who truly help shape the future.

Last year the morning of my birthday my car broke down on the highway on my way to work. I wrote a Facebook status about how my day started and almost instantly Mrs. Bond sent me a direct message. She told me how she values my job as a school counselor and offered me her car. At the time she had no idea I’d have her car for 2 months. She opted to car pool with her husband so that I can use her car to get to and from work. This by far was one of the most selfless generous acts of service someone has ever done for me. I am forever grateful as I was able to continue to commute to work and save tons of money because I didn’t have to rent a car. I am more than delighted to endorse Mrs. Bond for this award as she is truly deserving.
