Dennis Walkup was nominated by his principal, Chris Mitchell.
Mr. Walkup chose education as a second career. After retiring from the Missouri Department of Health, he joined the Joplin Schools family to work with some of the district's most needy students as a behavior aide. His talents were recognized, and he was encouraged to seek teacher certification. He began working with his own special education caseload and has continued to do that until this year. He is retiring at age 73.
Mr. Walkup works well with faculty and students. Students at South Middle School are lucky to hear his presentations in student body assemblies each year commemorating Veteran's Day and 9-11. It's truly amazing to hear his presentations, which he modifies each year. His Veteran's Day presentation includes histories of various aspects of World War I. The 9-11 presentation is an insightful look at the events that led up to and transpired in our nation on that day.
Mr. Walkup also provided interesting military history lessons for students. He takes great pride in taking the students in classes out while dressed in period clothing and taking them through drills. The students recognize that Mr. Walkup is unique and should be respected in his role as an educator. His mild-mannered, quiet disposition seems to enhance the effect that he has on students and teachers.
Mr. Walkup's good sense of humor and teamwork was on display during his school's weekly news broadcast. He played the role of "The Most Interesting Man In the World," where he would offer funny advice or comment on current events at the school. Students and staff enjoyed his segment.
"Mr. Walkup is a model citizen and veteran. He works hard within his department to ensure the learning of the students on his caseload and others who he encounters," said Mitchell. "He encourages his peers and administration, and he's an example of persistence and dedication. He seldom misses work and fulfills all of his duties without question. Mr. Walkup is certainly a LifeChanger for any who have the good fortune to interact with him."
