Joe Flanagan was nominated by his colleague, Diane McMurry.

If you know Mr. Flanagan, you understand what a “Flanaganism” is. He's never without a smile, a joke, or some wisdom to share. Standing 6’7” tall, he is never one to be overlooked, but it’s not just about his stature.
Since 1981, Mr. Flanagan has been collecting life experiences as an educator. He has worked with students all the way from elementary to adult education. He has been a teacher, a band director, an assistant principal, a principal, and a district director. It's not Mr. Flanagan's impressive resume that makes his impact so vast, however. It's the level of commitment he has applied throughout his life that has impacted so many students and teachers over the years.
Mr. Flanagan is an advocate. He is passionate in his beliefs, but more importantly, he is a man of action. Mr. Flanagan participates in seven non-profit organizations that are committed to helping the youth of the community. Never one to take the easy way, he says, “You do what it takes because it’s the right thing to do.” And that is what he does.
Most people head into retirement wondering how they will spend their days. Not Mr. Flanagan. He plans to spend his retirement advocating and improving the opportunities for youth within his community. By creating opportunities for tactically skilled students who may be struggling learners, Mr. Flanagan is impacting the lives of students who many people have already given up on. His greatest joy is seeing those kids, who are now grown up, as successful adults.
"If you're walking around Stuart, Florida and you hear a sharp whistle, turn and look. You will probably see Joe Flanagan," said McMurry. "While his whistle is meant to grab your attention, don’t be distracted. Rest assured Joe is still working as a LifeChanger, and we are all the better for it."
I always say I would not have survived high school without band. But now as an adult and having been in bands with other instructors and having a daughter participate in her high school band, I can say with certainty it was not just band: it was Mr. Flanagan's band. As an instructor Mr. Flanagan expected you to excel and work hard, but he expected the same of himself. He was fair and consistent. He provided opportunities for learning and growth beyond the norm. He was an advocate for the "growth mindset" before that was any kind of common parlance. A life changer for me without a doubt. Thank you, Mr. Flanagan.
Joe was a classmate of mine in high school. A really nice guy. So proud of this accomplishment for you Joe. Well deserved!
Congrats Joe. I don't think they could have selected anyone more deserving than you. You've dedicated your entire career to making an impact on students and I am certain along the way that you brought your humor into play for the benefit of all. At 6'7", you were destined to standout and make an impact and you certainly have. Enjoy your retirement and thanks for representing for the LHS Dreadnaughts!

There's a movie out there called Mr. Hollands Opus. It's about students who went to high school and they had a band instructor, Mr Holland. There's a scene where all the students are grown up and a near retired Holland leads the students to one last performance. A movie that could be, what I would love to believe, inspired my Mr Flanagan. I have known Mr Flanagan since my high school days at South Fork. I am going to miss him, his deep voice and I'll be seeing you around Sandsprit Park!

Mr. Flanagan will be missed at AMS. He always gave the best advice to me as a parent no matter what it was. Both of my daughters went to AMS. They had trust in him and always knew he was there for ANYTHING! His consistent presence was encouraging. Not to mention, his AWESOME support of the Girls Volleyball Team!

Congratulations Mr. Flanagan. I had the opportunity to be around you a few times in which you taught me valuable lessons. Thank you for always showing that you genuinely care and being a great role model of a true servant leader.
Honor, motivation, charisma, humility, kindhearted, paternal, optimistic leader, tough love, amazingly wonderful...so much more I can say about Mr. Flanagan, but I would have to write a book. I will never forget how welcoming his greeting would be each and every day. His positive attitude was contagious and he knew exactly how and when to help those in need. He loves the students and never loses focus because he knows they are our sole purpose in and outside the classroom. Mr. Flanagan makes everyone feel loved, especially our kiddos and he gives back waiting for nothing in return, which is why he is truly blessed. May your new journey be as or more fulfilling than the one you have created for all those who had the honor of working by your side and know how special you are. Best wishes today and always!
Gave me a very warm welcoming as an Asst Mgr. for FNS, as I assisted that program there.
First time I "saw" him was because I turned around to see who the heck was speaking so LOUDLY at Anderson's parent drop-off lane! Well, he definitely got my attention then and has my gratitude forever. Mr. Flanagan has such compassion, respect and true love for all students and the beauty of it is that these kids know it. He takes the time to make each child relevant, heard, and validated without seeking ANY recognition for his actions. When my daughter played volleyball in middle-school, her grandparents were never able to attend her games and she missed not having family around. I don't know how Mr. F found out but he shared it with his parents, both of which attended every home game. Soon after the season started, Mr. F and his parents would make it a point to come up to my daughter and share something positive about the way she had played that day. My daughter is now in high school but we continue to feel his presence and actions. Just last week, she attended a #BlackLivesMatter protest, and the first thing she shared when she got home was, "Guess who was at the protest?" You continue to serve this community and for that we are truly grateful and lucky. Enjoy your time off but I know we will still see you around!
I have had the absolute honor of knowing and working at CLE with Joe, back when I started in the Martin County School District, 20 some years ago. I read the comments below and every one of them is spot on. Yes, Joe is hard to miss with his 6'7 frame. (Sorry about the photoshop picture of you as "mini-me".) But, there is so much more to Joe that is also hard to miss. The man consistently shows integrity in everything he does. He is a refreshing sign of hope in these times. He is committed to his community. Whether it is " Music In Our Schools", "The Stuart Community Band", "Project Graduation", "Children Emergency Resources" and I'm sure others I'm not aware of. He is genuine. The warmth and caring he displays cannot be missed - it is from the heart. I have felt courage knowing that Joe was standing behind me. It is going to be hard to miss his absence in the Martin County School System. Blessings for your new beginning.

We were fortunate to meet Mr Flanagan when my 2020 SFHS grad started kindergarten at CLE; later we reunited at AMS where I had the pleasure of his insight and no-nonsense approach during SAC meetings. Thank you for all you’ve given my students and so many in our community! Best Wishes
I am impressed by Joe Flanagan's ability to be that source of positive energy and constant "CAN DO" attitude. Always a cheerleader, Joe Flanagan was an unforgettable support in the beginning of my teaching career, and I am sure many more students and staff were uplifted by his positive mindset. Congratulations on this new milestone!
We all look at how tall Mr.Flanagan is, but that height is only superceded by the depth of all he encompasses as a great teacher, leader, administrator, friend and as a human being. There are many lessons he has taught- not by words- but by example. We would all be better people if we put to action even half of the lessons he has LIVED. He has most certainly touched many lives and those of us are better by having crossed his path. I treasure him for all he projects to the world. My life has been enriched observing him in action for over 30 years. He truly is a LIFECHANGER!!!

I am forever thankful for your attention to knowing and supporting every child and adult on the AMS campus, being a constant positive visual on campus helping everyone, model example of open door policy even when you were busy and caught off guard, and welcoming questions all day every day even after hours. Most importantly, thank you Joe for being someone that anyone can turn to to ask questions or talk to without judgement. You said you will always be present in the community even after retirement from education. This is not goodbye but a thank you and I will talk to you always ( I have your number hahaha)
I will forever be grateful for your passion energy friendly visits and your truly caring nature. In the past 5 years that I worked at AMS I looked forward to hearing your voice. You are the reason I got up and came to work every day even in the toughest times. You motivated me to be the best person I could be. Every day that I got to spend quality time with you was priceless. Your forever ending book of knowledge is simply amazing and where you keep all that knowledge is beyond me. The lessons you taught the students will always forever be engrained in their heads. The way you spoke to each and every student and gave them the ability to make the right choices. The students you helped along the way that any one would have gave up on. You have left a lasting impression on every one at AMS. Please go do big thing and make a difference in the world if anybody can do it you can. Most of all know that you are an inspiration and an a leader with more to give than the world has to offer to each and every person you meet along the way. Reading this made my heart so happy! Even though SFHS class of 2002 band members only got to spend 2 years with you as our fearless leader, it was clear to me that you were meant for bigger a better things. Other student's deserved to experience the warmth, encouragement, and guidance that we did. I was lucky enough to see first-hand what a great administrator you would become when we worked together at your first "gig", fittingly called The Dizzy Gilespie School for Fine and Performing Arts. I'm so thankful and blessed to have had him as a band director for 2 short years, my freshman and sophomore year at South Fork High School. He was sorely missed my Junior and Senior years!
Mr. Flanagan is the epitomy of integrity. He instilled in his students the importance of doing the right thing when no one is looking. He lead by example and took pride in doing so. He showed us how to work hard and play hard. He always had funny stories, jokes, and Flanaganisms to share, inspire and laugh.
He is a role model and has certainly changed many lives!
Mr.Flanagan has forever impacted my life. Growing up in a home with no consistent male role model, the male teachers in my life filled in the gaps. Three years of consistency and with Mr. Flanigan gave me what I needed in those formative years. I certainly didn't realize it as a kid, but i greatly appreciate it as an adult. I know my Mom appreciated it too. The discipline and kindness I received from his teachings will be with me forever. Thank you so much Mr. Flanigan! To me, you have already won the award.
I feel privileged at having been a student of yours for four short years. It’s amazing to look back 20+ years and vaguely remember things that you’re sure were earth shattering at the time but now are just a dim, inconsequential memory. But the memories from band - in class, after school, over the summer, in a parade, at a game, during the rush of competition - these are vivid memories for me and have absolutely shaped the way I approach each day. You pushed me past self imposed limits and doubts only to let me realize that it was already there and within reach. Thank you, Flanagan, for all that you’ve done, for all that you are, and for all the things that you’ve still got on your radar to tackle. We are all better people for having the pleasure of knowing you.
When you meet Mr. Flanagan, the first thing you notice his huge presence and not just from his height. Mr. Flanagan was my high school band director and I had the honor of working with him as a substitute teacher at AMS several years ago. Mr. Flanagan always encouraged you to do better and try new things. In band, I played a number of instruments for him and anytime I wanted to try something new he was always ready to listen. Always encouraging my creativity and love of band. Mr. Flanagan is a wonderful man, leader, friend & mentor to everyone. No one is ever excluded, no one feels unwanted or unloved and no one ever has to feel scared or embarrassed around Joe Flanagan. I believe he walks into every room with a goal and that goal is to let everyone know that he is there for you if you need anything, so just ask. Joe is the teacher I wish everyone could have at least once in their lives, he is a great role model. Congratulations on your nomination and enjoy your much-deserved retirement.
A few days ago, I, too was nominated for this same award, and am truly humbled by the nomination. However, Joe, is one of those people, you are forever grateful to have crossed paths with. This is clear by all of the comments left on this page.
Joe embodies the spirit of this award in every way! He is confident, but not arrogant. He is fatherly, supportive, and protective. He is authentic and genuine. He is selfless, not self-serving. He is supportive, never demeaning. He is charismatic, but not attention-seeking. He is wise. He has character, vision, and focus. All of these qualities make Joe the perfect recipient of this award. And I’m forever glad my path crossed his.
I worked w Joe at SFHS when our personal children were young. He had his students’ interests at heart. He was fun and collegial. His retirement is our loss, but I wish him all the best.
I had the privilege to know him from 1989-1992. 1989 was his first year at South Fork High School and it was a period of transition for many of us. Freshman you were just starting out and Seniors you had lost their previous mentor and band directors.
It is hard to identify any specific instance or way Mr. Flanagan influenced my life. I remember he cared about us as if we were his own children. Below is a list of "Flanaganisms" I recall from those years:
"If one person does it, it is stupid. If 150 people do it, it is creative and fun" Speaking to us wearing neckties on our heads for a Pep Rally.
"When the opportunity arises, you must be prepared" Illustrated by karate chopping one hand into the other when he said prepared.
"Look around right now. Never in your life will you be able to call 150 people your friends" Speaking to us during class one day.
Again, I can't identify any specific instance or way he influenced my life, I just feel I am a better person for having known him during my formative years.
Thank you for all you did for me, all you did for my classmates, and all you have done for the students that followed. Enjoy your retirement. I hope you will have more time for the fishing you so love!
Mr. Flanagan was my band director at SFHS from 1995-1999. He is the educator you never forget. He so positively impacted my life (and the lives of so many), I still use his wisdom and “Flanaganisms” in my own life over 20 years later. I cannot think of anyone who could motivate teenagers to run laps in 100 degrees or march through mud with a smiles on their faces than this man. There is nobody more deserving of this award than Joe Flanagan. Congrats and happy retirement!
Had it not been for Joe Flanagan, my life would have gone a very different direction. We lived in poverty. I didn't know my father, and the step-father I knew was a violent alcoholic who was in and out of prison. By the time I met Joe Flanagan as a high school student, my past and current circumstances were clearly laying out a path to a very dark place in the future. I had no guidance and trusted no one. I had been betrayed by so many people that I did not respect anyone enough to allow them to offer me guidance. I was a huge burning ball of anger, sarcasm, and self-loathing. Joe Flanagan changed my life. I had no understanding of how the world worked or how I was supposed to find a place in it. If Mr. Flanagan knew of my home life situation, he never let me know. He somehow knew how humiliating it was for me . He treated me like a normal person. No. That’s not accurate. He treated me differently. He let me know that he expected more out of me and made me start thinking that I should expect more out of myself. He expected more out of me. He was one of the first to recognize potential in me that I didn't recognize in myself. He didn't make me want to be like him, although I have spent much of my life trying to be more like him. He made me want to be the man that he knew I could be. Life since then has been full of ups and downs, but I was better prepared to face them. Joe Flanagan never gave up on me. Decades later, he was still there for me, even when I graduated from law school. If ever there was a man who is truly a life changer, it is Joe Flanagan.

Mr. Flanagan was my band Director in the late 90’s. I wasn’t an easy or talented band student, but he inspired excellence in all of us. He is more than deserving of this award. Congratulations on your retirement!
It was summer of 1990, me going into my freshman year of High School. I was very nervous because I was so tall (6'5) and didn't think I would fit into any of the band uniforms. Then...I saw you, taller than I and stood straight up as I, and without missing a beat spoke, and the commanding voice that csme out of your mouth frighten me and I forgot all about not bring sble to fit the uniform. LOL. In 1993, my senior year I decided to try out for drummajor. Thinking I wad too big, I tried out anyways. I won the audit9and my life changed. You mentored me through all my trials and got me to where I can lead without a second thought. You didn't know this at all.....but being that I had no father, you were the father figure to me and I really appreciated EVERYTHING you have ever done for me AND said to me. There is nothing I could do in this lifetime that can make up for all that you've taught me. I will never forget you for as long as I walk this earth Mr Flanagan. I love you like the father I never had. Always! Thank You
Dear Mr. Flanagan,
I write this with a tear in my eye because I am sad for me. You have been a HUGE part of my life since I was 14 years old. (32 years if you're counting). I've already expressed to you how much of an influence you were to me in my teenage years, but I have not expressed to you what you did for me this past year. This year I took the biggest leap of faith and took a teaching job that I thought was so much bigger than me, but somehow knowing that you were there on the same campus, I knew that I would be ok. You had me throughout the year. When I needed guidance you were there, when I needed tough love, you were there. When I needed a kick in the ass you were there. Most importantly you were there when I was successful and you let me know that you were proud.
I will truly miss you being "there" down stairs and in your office or just a push of a button away on my phone in class or a holler across the campus. I will also miss the Tom Brady razing. Well, maybe not.
So with all that said, Thank you!! Thank you for your support and love throughout the years and also for showing that same love and support to my own children even though they go to the other school ?? My twins have a clear understanding of why I respect and love you so much.

I want to start by saying my favorite "Flanniganism"... "Remember, you're unique, just like everyone else". He really has a way of making every person feel important yet humbled. He was the reason we all were even in band. Every day was on and ready to go. I will say no single person from that time in my life has influenced me more to become the person I am today. Life changer... Absolutely!
I had the pleasure of having Mr. Flanagan as a band director at South Fork High School in 1999. I still find myself in moments of frustration walking around saying “I love a parade”! Then when my son got to know you when he got to middle school...he now has ‘Flanaganisms’ of his own. You have touched so many people with your warm heart and authoritative presents. Everyone always talks about that one teacher. The one that made such a lasting impression, the impact of which carries well into adulthood. Joe Flanagan is that one teacher to more of my peers than I can count. Never before or after had there been someone who taught me to be proud but humble, competitive but a good sportsman, to have confidence in yourself while always pushing to be better than you are today, and—of course—sharp as a tack with relentless sense of humor. Thank you Flanny, from me and countless others. No one deserves this title more than you!!
I met you almost 15 years ago when my daughter started Kindergarten at Crystal Lake, I remember feeling confident that my child would be in good hands, and the same was true for middle school. I've been lucky enough to know you as a parent and a colleague. I'm glad I was fortunate enough to have had the chance to work with you at Anderson these past few years. I've learned a lot from you and have seen how caring and fair you are with students and staff. Thank you for your support both professional and personal, you always have the right words, it has been much appreciated. I wish you ALL THE BEST in your "retirement" I know you won't sit still, you will be missed. Your successor (as there is no replacement), will have big shoes to fill.

Thank you for all of the roles you have filled (including Chief Bottle Washer and Custodian at Dizzie Gilespie- I have fond memories of that time) both formally and informally to benefit the Martin County community. Your honesty, dedication, genuine care for all people, and your willingness to put your heart and soul into everything for kids is what I will remember most about your time in education. Joe Flanagan, the man, the myth, the legend. It was a pleasure and distinct honor working with you in various capacities since my arrival in Martin County. I will fondly cherish our many conversations both on and off the record, but always with great intentions of doing what is in the best interest of kids. I will miss the phone ringing randomly and that genuine and distinguished voice on the other end saying, “Let me run something by you.” Wishing you great days of fishing in retirement but, also realize you will continue to champion the processes and programs that make our community better for our kids today than it was yesterday. Joe Flanagan has impacted many students and parents as well. He is a devoted husband, father and educator; a man of great character. It is a privilege to know him. Thank you for your positive influence on us all. You deserve this.
I 1st met Mr Flanagan in summer of '85 as a rising junior the Eagles might describe as a "New Kid In Town". It was obvious from the first moment this was no ordinary man let alone teacher (let alone band director). He had incredibly high standards for which he would accept nothing less, was tough but fair, consistent & led from the front! He is blessed w/a physically commanding presence & voice tempered with the wisdom & compassion to know if he does his job right (which he almost always does) they're rarely necessary. He is the kind of teacher to whom compliance/obedience is an act of respect born of fear of disappointing him vs consequences (though disappointing him usually carried those too <3). He is the kind of leader for whom 100 kids age 12-18 (VHS was 8th-12th), young men & women (sorry, it was the 80s :D), black & white (in a town which then still had segregated proms at time) would literally snap to attention to work together for each other! While it is common for graduating classes to have milestone reunions "we" (VHS band alums of his tenure) spontaneously organized a "Flanaband" reunion in 2011 when we learned he(/Brenda) would be traveling through Vidalia to share our memories of those special years with him & each other! When I reflect back upon my first half-century he remains to this day on a short list of people with whom I credit anything I do right as a poor attempt to imitate (the bad stuff's all me).
TLDR - he is the kind of teacher for whom one stands on their desk & proclaims: "OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN!!!"
A Positive attitude, dedication, and hard work are only a few of the things you have shared with us every day. Even on the bad days, you managed to make me smile and turn every problem into a solution. I know you will continue to do wonderful things even in your retirement. Thank you for all of the support and for all the laughs. You are very appreciated and will be deeply missed! Congratulations!

It has been wonderful working with you these past couple of years at Anderson. I don't believe I every told you this story. I remember my first time seeing you at the bus loop when you were the Director of Transportation. I thought to myself, "Wow he talks really loud." Then that next year you came to Anderson. Your dedication to everything you do is amazing and appreciated! Thank you for all of your stories and words of wisdom. I was always listening. I am going to miss seeing out on the court yard. I know your mission to help the people of Martin County will continue. Now you will be able to concentrate on that full time. Congratulations on your retirement! Enjoy!

It shouldn't be a surprise that you are the first person I connected with when Ross and I moved to Stuart. Your personality and southern hospitality makes everyone feel comfortable and welcome. I will never forget the stories you've told me at least 10 times each, or how you taught me how to use a sabiki (which is still my favorite thing to do). I have learned so much from you in the 4 short years I've been at AMS, thank you for all of that knowledge- some useful, some not so much! Thank you for being the person I knew I could count on for help anytime I needed it! I appreciate that more than you know. I will miss your whistling coming down the hall, and your voice on the radio every 5 minutes!!!! You have been a great boss and an even better friend. Enjoy every second of your retirement (and send me pics of all the fish you catch), and try not to aggravate Brenda!

I would wager that Joe Flanagan has made larger impacts on more lives than nearly anyone else in Martin County. We all know the ”Flanaganisms”. He has a saying, an anecdote, or a joke for nearly any situation. While his height may be the most recognizable feature of Mr. Flanagan, his most endearing quality is the fact that he excludes nobody. I knew him as a high school band director and teacher. Every day he would walk the halls of South Fork High School and speak to any and every person that he came across - from teachers and students to janitorial staff and cafeteria workers. We all knew Joe Flanagan, and he knew all of us. I can think of no one else more deserving of an award such as this. Thank you, Mr. Flanagan, for being you and making us all the best versions of ourselves.
We have always enjoyed seeing your positive influences on the students from our days at CLE through High School band.

As a retired Deputy Sheriff School Resource Officer for 22 years I had the opportunity to work together with Mr. Flanagan for 6 years at Anderson Middle School. I cannot think of anybody I worked with that was more caring and compassionate with the students and staff at Anderson. As the Assistant Principal we worked very closely on a daily basis. The only way to describe my expierence with Mr. Flanagan was it was my honor and pleasure to have had that opportunity. Happy Retirement.
Mr. Flanagan was the band teacher when I was a custodian, Lead custodian and then Plant Operator at SFHS. He was the first person to tell me Teachers learn to make friends first with your Plant Operator because they and especially their staff are the backbone of the schools, and he is right. He also would say I will take care of it, not one to help out or just do it himself because he wanted to do. He is a true and caring person and no matter who you are or where you are he will recognize you in front of everyone. Everyone is equal to Mr. Joe Flanagan.

Both of my boys attended Anderson Middle and have a lot of respect for Mr. Flanagan. He has been awesome for that age group. So very glad to see him nominated for this award!

So very well deserved. I was fortunate enough to have Mr. Flanagan as my Band Director. I honestly believe I am who I am because of him. He instilled pride, compassion, dedication, work ethic and the importance of being on time into every student who crossed his path. He believed in his students but most importantly he taught us to believe in ourselves... and to keep moving forward. To this day I still look up literally and figuratively to this man. He was, is, and will always be a life changer to so many in our community.

I am going to miss your drop in visits and words of wisdom. It has been comforting to see you on campus--you instill a confidence in everyone around you.
I hope that you fully enjoy your retirement. I know you still have big plans and will continue to be a big influence, but I hope you catch lots of fish, too!

Great guy. Shared many good jokes. He was the guy that knew the answers. If I had a question about anything , he had the answer.
Students were his focus and they were receptive to him. The old saying , “it’s not what you say, but how you say it “ was Joe Flanagan all the way.

Mr. Flanagan is one of the first educators I met upon moving to Stuart, Florida as a freshman in high school. He was the South Fork High School band director at that time. He was quick with an ice breaker and always a joke, making this newcomer feel more at home. Traveling with the flag/dance team and band is always a great memory. Bus trips, competitions... he was so much fun but also kept expectations high and inspired us to be our best. After high school, life moved forward- college, work, marriage, kids. I’m happy to say that I returned to Martin County to raise a family and my oldest daughter got to have Mr. Flanagan as her assistant principal at Anderson Middle School for all of her three years there. She did well academically and was kept safe, during very different times than when I graduated in 1994. He was always present and spirited at all her sporting events. My mother, a retired educator in Palm Beach and Martin Counties, was also happy to have worked with him as a substitute after her retirement. She had so much respect for him and how he managed the students at Anderson Middle. Mr. Flanagan has been a blessing to Martin County schools. Thank you for all you have done for generations of students!

I only met you for the first time when I started my campaign for Martin County Property Appraiser and you took me under your wing and helped me when you didn’t even know me! He was band director at South Fork High School when we met him. The students were rrspindind very well to him. My husband and I wanted to help at the home football games but had a prior commitment. He came up with us showing up after the game to clean the stadium and we were all happy. He is a great leader. He sets a great example for our young people. I think he is outstanding.
I can’t think of a more deserving person than Joe. He is truly an inspiration!
I’ve had the honor to work with Joe as a parent and community partner.
Joe had the daunting task of have 3 of my boys in his school at once. They learned real fast that it wasn’t his first time at the rodeo. He knew how to steer them and guide them to be the adults they are today.
I’ve also have the honor of working with him through our nonprofit Elev8hope. Partnering together meeting the needs of students in and out of school. Several calls are exchanged daily as we navigate many social issues, food insecurities , mental health and sadly death. We work like a fine oiled machine.
The Legend is ready to retire but this man will never stop advocating for students. We will be seeing and hearing from him more than ever once her steps down.
Joe thanks for the partnership and for loving these kids as much as you do. You NEVER had your finger off their pulse.
Elev8hope loves you and always has an empty desk for you if you should miss the office setting. Roll up your sleeves and jump in. Lunch will always be on me.

Joe Flanagan is a staple at Dr. David L. Anderson middle school. Next year will definitely not be the same without him. He is such an intricate part of our school and he will be missed by everyone! He is always willing to help and does so with a smile on his face. In my three years of working with Joe, I have never seen him in a bad mood. He lives life to the fullest and is always looking for solutions and ways to lend a helping hand to anyone who needs it. We are going to miss you! Come back and visit in 365 days! haha
Joe has been a friend and colleague for over 30 years. Although I am also honored to be a nominee for this award this year, and would love to win, I would also love to see Joe win. He has been a true life changer in many ways, for many many students and colleagues throughout every phase of his career. He can always be counted upon to do whatever is in the best interest of any student he comes in contact with. And I don’t believe that will change when Joe retires. I imagine we will see him keep right on changing lives as an educator emeritus.

First , to the person that wrote this, I feel like I know you. You were spot on. I’m a past student of Mr. Flanagan’s and graduated in 1999. He was my band director and mentor. Without his discipline and his repetitive demand to give it my best, There is no doubt I wouldn’t have made it through and graduated. This life changer of the year award is very deserving and I’m proud to have been guided by him. I’m 39 years old and and am proud to call him a friend. Congrats on this Mr. Flanagan , you were a life changer back in 1999 too.
In my short time knowing Mr. Flanagan I was immediately struck with his presence on campus. His positive relationships with the staff, the kids, and families is truly inspiring. His influence reaches beyond his own campus and helps shape our community. Thank you for supporting me and offering guidance during my first year teaching. I always felt supported and empowered!
Mr. Flanagan THANK YOU for all that you have done and especially the work you do behind the scenes. People would never know the way you help students in need. You never look for any acclaim or acknowledgment for the services you help our students and their families find. I am grateful to have learned from you and to have you as a friend! What can you not say about Mr. Flanagan?! He's done it all!!! He has deffinitley lived up to the legend I heard about over the years. It has been a pleasure working with you these past two years. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving me the opportunity to strengthen my craft as a teacher. You provided me with clear guidance and believed in my character, professionalism, and ethics. You gave me a chance and opportunity to utilize these traits throughout the campus. Your support with students and families has been tremendous. I wish you a long and happy retirement. But, somehow, I don't feel you will completely sail into the sunset/sunrise!!! There are bigger fish out there!!!
There are so many stories, or "Flanaganism" as Mrs. McMurry noted, that it is impossible to pick one to share. But...since I must...it is the feeling that you, Mr. Flanagan, always had my back and wanted to make sure even when you picked a different solution than I would have picked, it was good.
The first time you introduced yourself to the Anderson Middle School family, you talked for a bit longer than the allotted time. After, you walked to the back of the auditorium and sat down besides me on those uncomfortable lunch tables, asking, "How did that go?" I summed it up honestly saying your chat may not be liked by everyone but they understood you were coming from a place of love. That place, one where you truly tried to find a solution to each and every problem, was as much of who you are as your long winded, hilarious story-telling skills.
It is why when I had a challenging student, I knew you would move them to a better environment, and I need not be afraid. It was when I contemplated leaving Anderson Middle School and you went out of your way to help me talk to other administrators so I could explore those options. It was when you were mulling over how to present a solution to some school committee, you asked my opinion and then told me why I was wrong.
I will miss those chats, those times of a word or two, or more...but like all great educators, you will forever be a voice in my head, offering an alternative solution. In that, I know I am not the only one to have heard your tenor; the reverberations of your being will be felt at Anderson Middle School for years to come.

Your guidance, knowledge and friendship will be sorely missed. Your commitment to our school is unparalleled. You truly do the "dirty work" while always keeping a positive attitude. It should come as no surprise that we will miss you.
Yet, as certain as your retirement is, I am equally certain that our paths will cross again. I have no doubt you will stay active in our community for a long time to come.

Joe is always someone who would stop and talk things over with you if you need the guidance or insight. He's a phenomenal net worker and great at keeping people connected and involved. I will miss his singing out bursts in the courtyard!
I am not great at putting things into words sometimes, so let me just say... it has been an honor to work with you these 5 years. You have made such a difference in countless students' lives, both at Anderson and beyond in our community. To say you will be missed is an understatement-- who else can whistle like that or be heard across campus without even trying?! In all seriousness, I thank you for your mentorship and for everything you taught me. There will be a big empty space at AMS next year. We appreciate you and will miss your presence on campus daily. Oh my Joe Joe...There is a squirrel chasing a cat and the cat just jumped on a baby goat and....... You have definitely made may last few years fun. I will miss you as my counter part and trying to keep you focused ( or at least out of trouble). You have blessed many students with your variety of teachable moments and the many job titles you have filled. Stay safe , stay focused and stay fishing - I am sure I will see you around town.
