Music that Describes John
John Garner was nominated by Colleen Shedd, the parent of a student.
"Mr. Garner went above and beyond to help my child as he struggled in school," said Shedd. "He stayed during lunch to tutor my child and give him the extra boost he needed. He has also kept in contact any time my child started to fall behind again. Mr. Garner's also a coach at school, and he is liked by everyone he influences. I know he has made a major change in my child's life, as well as many others."
You are amazing! You have gave these kids so much fight! You are a true hero.
I first met John last year as the Coach who asked my 8th grade son to join the wrestling team. Since then I have come to know him as not only a wonderful Coach, but a fantastic Teacher and someone I call a friend. Last year my son had no interest in any sport and was struggling with his grades in all classes. I will never forget the day Scotty came home and said he wanted to join the wrestling team. He could not stop talking about Coach Garner. He was SO excited!
Scotty is now a freshman in high school will all A’s, a member of the National History Club and a varsity wrestler who qualified for State. The excitement in Scotty is all over the place now! All this is possible with the firm guidance and encouragement from his teaching-coach, Coach Garner!
I appreciate how John stays connected to me as the parent and will help when my boy needs a little extra push or encouragement that he just doesn’t want to hear come from my mouth.
Scotty has mentioned more than once that Coach Garner is his favorite teacher. John is by far my favorite teacher of Scotty’s because the support doesn’t only stay in the classroom or wrestling room. He goes above and beyond to encourage Scotty and me as his parent to be better at everything in life.
I can’t think of a more deserving person for this award! Congratulations on your nomination!
While I have only known Mr. Garner for about a year, I can say I am a better teacher and person because of him. John is dedicated and encouraging, and will support you no matter what. If at any time I have been unsure of myself, John is always there to reassure me and to help however he can. He has inspired me by his love his content and students. He has reaffirmed my love for Social Studies (which is not my content area) and is a role model for the type of teacher I wish to become. I cannot think of anyone more deserving.
I can’t think of anyone more deserving! He’s had a passion for teaching for as long as I can remember.
I have been able to work with John now for nearly a decade, as his schools have been part of the National History Club. His enthusiasm and dedication to this job is second to none, and his Club has now won our national History Club of the Year award six straight years! Every year --- regardless of the challenges --- John has a History Club made up of new and returning members. The activities that they participate in run the gamut, and they constantly keep the students engaged and excited in history. John has my strongest recommendation for this award!
I have personally known John Garner for 7 plus years. I have known of John Garner for a lot longer. I had the fortunate opportunity to work with John for 5 years at Newnan High School in Coweta County. John is the most motivated and energetic person I have ever met or worked with. He does not waste a single minute of any day because he has so much going on in his schedule. This is largely due to the fact he does not know how to say no. He has so many incredible talents that he shares with anyone willing to ask. How he does, what he does with wrestling, teaching, history club, professional development, extracurricular activities while fathering 5 children and maintaining a relationship with his wife, I have no clue. I have been fortunate enough to watch him influence the lives of many children, while being able to learn and grow from his influence myself. I am beyond lucky to have had John Garner as a friend and colleague.
Coach Garner has been amazing coach to my son Tristan. He recruited him to wrestling program during an high school orientation. Since then my son admire Garner during his years at Newnan High School. He still looks up to him as he continue his career path. I am grateful for all he has done for my son. Know that he not only works hard to help his students but deeply cares for them as well.
I had the pleasure of working with John Garner at Newnan High School where we were History Club sponsors as well as sponsors of the History Bee and Bowl team. John is always striving to do more as an educator & bring history alive for his students. He consistently creates innovative opportunities for students to engage in history in the classroom and encourages students to find ways of experiencing history outside of the classroom as well. He is high-energy and believes that nothing is impossible! I have learned so much by working alongside him and am proud to call him a friend. If anyone exemplifies what it means to be a "life-changer", it is definitely John Garner!
Mr. Garner is such a caring teacher with such a unique and fun energy!! Even now, years later I remember his class as a middle schooler. He deserves the best! :)
Coach garner, was my son's history teacher and wrestling coach. I knew first hand how passionate he is about teaching and coaching. Through the 15 reminds I got a day. Reminding me of what assignments my son has and when they were due. He always went the extra mile for his students and wrestlers. Making sure they did their work and making sure they had rides to practice. John truly cares for his students and wants them to succeed in anything they do. I was sad to hear of his leaving Mason creek. Temple high gained a great teacher and coach. His a true leader, teacher and, coach. Congratulations! on the nomination. You deserve it.
John Garner has always been a teacher/coach that cares about each and every student. He is an award winning teacher for a reason. We need more educators who are dedicated to and thoroughly enjoy educating students the way Mr. Garner does!
I have known JC Garner for many many years, since he was in elementary school. His mom and i worked together and my daughter was friends with his sisters. My heart explodes at seeing him bloom more and more every year! He has really come a long way baby! Keep inspiring!!!
Great person and very deserving! I had The pleasure of attending Lincoln’s Conference with him at Ford’s theaters and just in a short time of being around him, it was very obvious he was very passionate about history!
Anyone that coach garner knew, automatically became one of his own. He would go out of his way for anyone!
Garner is one of the most sweetest teacher/ coach ever! Never looked at anyone different. Always positive and made everyone else feel welcome and loved.
John Garner is one of those teachers and colleagues that you will never forget. He is an extraordinary teacher and human being. He brings History to life. Is amazing the projects, field trips, History Club projects that he has done and of course Wrestling. He has been a mentor for many students and role model. The students learn new ways to learn History. Mr.Garner or Coach Garner always leaves a mark wherever he goes. I am very proud of him and his accomplishments.
Coach Garner is one of the hardest working Coaches/Teacher/Life Mentors I’ve had in my life.
Till this day I still use motivation I’ve was given by him with his power of words he gave me in HS/ Middle School! He’s the man!
He was my daughter’s teacher at Newnan High when she was a freshman. She loved being in his classroom because he made History fun, he challenged his students, and made them feel like one of his own. He deserves the best in life!
I had coach garner as my social studies teacher in middle school at Rockmart. He was the best teacher I’ve ever had, he was super enthusiastic. He always made sure that every student unterstood the lesson he was teaching us. I hope many more amazing things come to him and his family!
Couldn't have chosen a more deserving person! John's love for his students shines in his words and his actions. The extra efforts he takes to bring History to life in a meaningful way is a rare gift for his students!
I had the pleasure of having Coach Garner as my track coach and as a history teacher while in middle school. He is very passionate about what he teaches and brought history alive! I couldn’t think of anyone else who deserves this award!
John Garner is a wonderful teacher with an enormous passion for education and is also a very positive role model for students.
He will forever have a positive impact on my sons lives. I can say that he had had a genuine concern for each student. John is very dedicated and compassionate in his teaching and coaching as well. I greatly appreciate his enthusiasm and profound respect for people. From my experience with having raised two children in the public school system, John Garner ranks among the highest. It is no doubt that he has received such a high nomination and I totally support him for this nomination. Congratulations John Garner. Well deserved.
John is one of the hardest working, busiest, dedicated, teachers I’ve ever seen. He loves his job and it shows!
I have been friends with John and his wife for many years. His dedication to his family, students, and athletes is unsurpassed. He always invests everything he has into teaching and coaching, and still has time and energy to devote to his children and family. Honored to call him a friend!
I had the pleasure of know how passionate John Garner, was as a teacher and a coach. He was my son's history teacher and wrestling coach. He always went the extra mile for his students. John, truly cares for his students and it shows through the 15 reminds I got a day letting me know. what assignments were due and when. My kids never had a teacher that kept me informed as he did. He is a true leader, teacher, and a coach. I recommend him for this recognition. Congratulations! coach.
I have know John Garner for quite some time, all the way back to his high school days. You will not find a more genuine and caring person. I love seeing what he does with his students. He goes above and beyond every day. He is truly changing lives.
I've had the pleasure of seeing John in person demonstrate his care and dedication for his students, athletes and the school. He is intense, dedicated and knows no limits on what he will do to reach a student. He is one of the most passionate educators I've come across in my 64 years. I wish we had 100s more like him. Im available to go into detail please feel free to contact me.
John is so committed to his students and is a mentor to younger volunteers within the groups that he works with
This is so amazing! I can’t think of anyone who deserves it more than you! Congratulations!!
Oh wow, where do I even start! First off, congrats coach! Coach Garner was not only a great teacher but also an amazing coach! He fought for me to be able to wrestle and took me under his wing! He encouraged me on and off the mats in school work, real life and anything you needed! A can’t think of anybody else more deserving for this!!
I’ve been fortunate to meet John during a summer seminar for history teachers. During our time together, it was easy to see his passion for history and his enthusiasm for his students. I’ve been lucky enough to maintain a cross country friendship with him, where we still have opportunities to collaborate and share resources. It is with great honor that I recommend him for this recognition.
I had pleasure of coaching volleyball with John Garner, a sport he was unfamiliar with at the time. It took him no time to quickly adapt to the game and become confident in leading a group of young women through a successful season. His energy and passion for learning new things is evident and felt by those around him. During our time together, I also got to know about another passion of his, history. He would often talk about his love for history and how engaging students with real life history experiences was a calling he had. Since moving his career to another school, I am still able to keep up with him through social media where he continues to encourage and inspire me and those around him.
I have had the pleasure of knowing coach Garner for 3-4 years. I also had the pleasure of coaching along side him with Newnan High School in the 2018-2019 wrestling season. Without the help of Coach Garner, I would not be running the very same wrestling program today. Aside from being a great friend, he was an even better mentor. He taught me how to navigate a wrestling season, raise funds for the program, and form relationships with those who filled the wrestling community. John Garner went above and beyond to make sure he taught me what I needed to know. He impacted my life in a way that I will not soon forget. Congrats on the nomination coach.
As a fellow teacher and coach, I fully understand the time, commitment, and sacrifice that it takes to be able to reach and teach all students. John is an excellent example of a true teacher, both in the classroom and on the wrestling mat. His drive to engage all students and athletes is what all teachers and coaches hope to have and the level of connection he makes with them leaves no doubt as to where his talents truly lie. I am honored to know and to share the profession with such a great example of an exemplary educator.
Congrats John....you are an outstanding teacher, club advisor and leader!
John Garner plays a huge role in bringing history alive everywhere he goes. He meets the kids where they are and helps them build from there.
Congratulations on your nomination! Your energy and passion inspire your colleagues as well as your students!
I've only had the pleasure of knowing Coach Garner for a few weeks, but in this short time I have been blown away by his energy and his commitment to positively impacting his students and athletes at THS. He attacks every day with the same energy, and this energy is infectious not only to his students, but also his colleagues. He makes me want to be better every day!
I want to support John Garner as a candidate for Life Changer of the Year. In his role as a teacher and a mentor he has been a profound influence in the life of my son Ryan Potts. Mr. Garner has a much-deserved reputation as a stellar teacher, coach, and mentor for his students. Mr. Garner brings history to life for his students. He makes history an exciting and interesting subject about real people and events, instead of being a list of important dates and events. Because he brings it to life for the students, they get personally involved in a way that influences them for the rest of their lives. They can see current events as history in the making, connected to events of the past. History is not just a subject: it is the story of the lives of real people who have created our world through their actions.
My son Ryan did not have Mr. Garner as a teacher, but his connection through the History Bowl had perhaps an even more important impact on Ryan. As a member of the History Bowl team, Ryan went to Washington DC three times for Nationals, and those trips were important for Ryan. In the competition, Ryan won a gold medal for Newnan High School in Sports and Entertainment. Because he wants to be a sports journalist, that accomplishment is significant for my son. In addition to the experience of the competition at Nationals, Mr. Garner brought history to life for the students, taking them to Philadelphia while they were there. He took the students to Independence Hall. He also took them to run up the steps that Rocky ran in the film, an event that students are sure to remember. Mr. Garner also took his students to Plains, Georgia to meet President Jimmy Carter and to see him teaching Sunday School. All of those events are sure to be lifelong memories for Mr. Garner’s students, events that remind them of the real significance of the study of history and social studies, not just as subjects but as the study of the events that affect our lives on a daily basis. Teachers such as Mr. Garner are rare. The saying that teachers affect eternity is certainly true in the case of John Garner. All students should be fortunate to be exposed to educators such as John Garner. He certainly is worthy of the honor for which he has been nominated, and I highly recommend him for this recognition.
John Garner is one of the most active people I know in education. He is a strong believer in experiencing history using all five senses. He goes above and beyond for his students so that they can truly have as close to a first-hand account as possible of the history he teaches. I was lucky to study with him in college and share our thoughts on how to best advocate for students and for preserving and sharing the history of our nation with others.
Although, I never had Coach Garner as a teacher and saw him more in his element as a wrestling coach. He was always capable of making kids try and do their best on the mat as well as in the classroom. He has a huge heart for the underdog and a knack for making everybody feel special in even the most minor roles. He is a true leader, teacher, and coach.
Mr. Garner was a huge part in two of my children’s lives. We had just moved back to Georgia all the way from my home town of Salt Lake City, Utah. I was looking to hopefully make some positive changes in a couple of my kids lives who were struggling. Mr. Garner looking for recruits for the School wrestling team, found my eldest son who was struggling tremendously at his young age getting involved with the wrong crowd. Garner learned while speaking with him that he had a younger brother who was wrestling in school prior to moving. Garner approached him with enthusiasm and high hopes of getting him on his team and encouraging him to convince his older brother that it could help him and show him some structure, dedication, and hopefully help him see his better self. Garner was successful at getting them both to commit. He became someone that my kids along with so many other children depended on to hold them accountable for not only their responsibilities as a team mate but their decisions scholastically, (being a great History teacher AND coach at the time) and personal decisions that would affect them graduating high school and becoming a successful citizen of our community. I watched Garner engage with his student for 4 years. I saw Garner always hold up each child to the best of their abilities and pushing them to be the best each one was capable of and reminding them of their potential. I would hear him speak to the kids letting them know if they ever needed anything that they could count on him. Whether it be help with school or just someone to talk to, his door was always open. I myself had to ask Garner for some guidance and help when my child needed a little extra push or encouragement that a boy just was not willing to hear it come from a mothers mouth. He truly cares about his students. I think he is a great nominee as I have clearly seen the impact and dedication that Garner has Had with his students and continues to do so.
I met John a few years ago at a Ford's Theater sponsored teacher's workshop. He is one of the most exuberant teachers of American History I have ever had the fortune to meet. He is a wealth of knowledge in history and loves sharing his insights. He was supportive of other teachers, listening respectfully to their opinions and thoughts about the topics we were discussing: the post Civil War and Reconstruction era and the controversial discussions people are having over Confederate Memorials and the legacy of the Civil War. In the years since, John and I have kept up our connection and I'm always impressed by the activities he shares online from his classes. He obviously cares about his students both academically and in the social/emotional development known as adolescence! He works tirelessly to bring history alive to his students. He reaches out to members of his community and in the larger US area, often having live interactions with the people who were there when it happened. Nothing can make US history come alive more than to have our current students talk with members of the Greatest Generation. John is a passionate wrestling coach and I know that has made an impact on hundreds of his former and current athletes in his care. Most importantly, John is devoted to his family. His wife and children are lucky to have him. In closing, I am glad to know John and his enthusiasm inspires me in my role as an eighth grade social studies teacher. My only question, when does John sleep? Thank you for reading this, Kathryn Doherty
John Garner helped to instill in my son a discipline to go out and experience history firsthand. John is driven, and organized. He wants his students to not just read about what happened on a particular date in American history, but to walk the path of those who created history.
As an example, John brought the Newnan High School history bowl team to Nationals in Washington. He understood Philadelphia was close by, and many of the students had never been there, nor would they likely go on their own. He made sure to get the entire team (by rail) to see Independence Hall and other important historical monuments.
John gives his students the experiences they will take with them through their lives, and for that, I am most grateful.
Coach Garner has made such an impact on both of my daughters, he has inspired them whether it be in the class room or during history bowl. He fueled a passion for history in both of them, he went the extra mile and pushed my daughter out of her comfort zone in the classroom and it made her a better person because of it. He is a amazing teacher and deserves to be recognized for this. He truly cares for all of his students. John Garner is definitely a life changer.
Mr. Garner is one of the teachers that has fueled my passion for learning, and he is also one of the best teachers I've ever had. He is a phenomenal teacher and coach who is endlessly dedicated to his profession, students, and athletes. Coach Garner is always willing to spend extra time working with his students to make sure that they strive in his classes; he invests so much time in making a lesson plan to fit every students' needs. He will always be one of the teachers I look back upon and remember all of the amazing memories in his classes, and how he made every student feel like family.
I was a volunteer for the high school wrestling program and had the honor to work with Coach Garner for four years. Garner went above and beyond not only on the mat but off the mat. He spent many hours over summer breaks, after practices and after tournaments working to build the program to provide wrestlers everything they needed to be successful. He always reached out to any wrestler, manager, or parent that was struggling whether it was on the mat, in the class room or outside of school. He led with enthusiasm and was able to make a connection with each wrestler and manager. He supported and encouraged wrestlers after losses. He celebrated victories in ways the team will never forget whether it was some goofy dance or allowing the team to paint his face!! Over the years I have seen Garner's energy, drive and dedication change so many young lives.
John Garner is the teacher everyone strives to be. He has set the bar really high for all teachers that are lucky to know him. His love of teaching only seems to be rivaled by his love of history and geography. I met John through the Geography Bee that was held at Newnan High School a couple of years ago. He did a wonderful job organizing the event. John has an amazing gift of bringing history to life for his students. When he's teaching about the Holocaust, he interviews survivors or hosts them at his school. The impact he has had on students can be seen through the number of students that joined his newly created History Club at Mason Creek Middle School and the AP Human Geography group at Newnan High School. John also supports teachers through Facebook groups. He brought a renewed energy to our "Georgia Studies Teachers" FB group by sharing ideas, lesson plans, and field trip ideas. John is definitely worthy of the title Lifechanger of the Year.
John Garner is a very dedicated and active teacher and someone who will never give up on his students. I've personally witnessed his teaching and seen not only someone with a passion for teaching, but someone with a passion for people. Not only does he provide firm guidance for his students, he forms relationships that last longer than the class period. With extreme professionalism everywhere, from the classroom to field trips to interpersonal relationships, John Garner is a leader by example, and he is someone I am proud to know.
Coach Garner was definitely one of my idols growing up. While going to school at Rockmart coach kept me on my toes, he always pushed me to strive for my dreams. When I did wrong he was always there to correct me an showed me the right path.... I believe I can speak for Brandon Morris also! Thank you coach garner for always being an inspiration to me..

John Garner is a wonderful Coach,Teacher and friend. He truly cares for his students. He taught and Coached two of my boys. Coach Garner invested his time, encouraged their success and showed them how to handle adversity. He will always be like family.
John Garner is a truly dedicated history teacher and educator who is passionate about instilling a love of learning in his students. I am always in awe about the steps he takes to bring in guest speakers to his class and history club to bring history to life for his students and engage them in conversation. I am so lucky to have him as a member of my professional learning network as he is a great asset and friend.
Indefatigable. Inexorable. Extraordinary. The superlatives go on and on for John Garner, who might just well be the single-most dedicated history teacher in the USA. As the founder and Executive Director of the National History Bee, National History Bowl, and International History Olympiad, I have had the privilege of getting to know well over a thousand teachers over the past decade on a personal basis. There is not a single one who matches, nay, comes close to matching John's example. How he does it, with 5 kids of his own and a newly minted master's degree is beyond logical explanation. Every day on his Facebook page, I see news of some new field trip, some new guest speaker, some new coaching win for the wrestling team, some new win for the History Bowl team, some new accolade for his History Club, some new immersive lesson plan that makes history come to life. This man literally cold-called me to ask me to let him staff the inaugural International History Olympiad (this was how I first got to know him). He was from Day 1 an integral part of the Olympiad's success, and I have enjoyed every minute of working together with him over the past five years that I have known him. His nomination for the Lifechanger of the Year Award has my highest possible recommendation.
John Garner definitely has an influence like none I have ever witnessed. I have seen him take students that do not enjoy history in the least, and cause them to be excited about history and going to class. He employees many methods to include all of his students, causing them to want to engage, do homework, and excel in his classes. My daughter is one such student. She did not really like history and thought it was not relevant to her in 2018. She began to talk about her history class, and became excited to the point that she now wants to be a history professor at a college level. Additionally, he is a huge supporter of our military, and encourages his students to do the same.
John hosted history bowls, a history club and was a coach for the Newnan High wresting team. He encouraged my daughter to try out for the wresting team, by discussing the possibility of a college scholarship, as many females do not wrestle. Therefore, his encouragement is not only in the classroom for his class. He wants to see students develop into scholars, and leaders.
The history club has sponsored many speakers to come and speak to students and parents on many different topics, from the civil rights movement and the Freedom riders, a WW II fighter pilot, members of the civil rights movement, Vietnam Veterans.
Even after graduation, he has former students to come back and speak, especially those in the military. To say Mr. Garner has been a positive influence on the lives of his students is an understatement. He is an excellent teacher, coach and mentor.
Standing on the outside of a club or classroom but looking in is sometimes the best vantage point for seeing what is truly happening inside. My children did not have the pleasure of being in John Garner's class, but one served as History Club President and Vice-President under his leadership. He provided excellent opportunity for students to lead and stepped in to make the club stronger when needed.
As a teacher at Newnan High School, I saw the caliber events and speakers he brought to all of the community. Outside of the school day, I was thrilled to see our auditorium filled to hear veteran speakers. These walking historians are folks he met in his frequent travels around the country as he was involved in summer classes.
John brought enthusiasm to his classes and to our entire history department. I could always count on him, and still do, for a listening ear, a helping hand, and a huge smile when I need it most. John Garner has changed lives not just in Newnan, Georgia, but wherever he travels. He is truly a representative of the teaching profession and a life changer for the people he encounters in and out of class.
John Garner was my social studies teacher in middle school . He is a great teacher and has always showed his passion for teaching and having a positive impact on people’s lives . I remember him being involved in so many school activities and he always had a smile on his face while being there . I’m proud to be able to say I learned from him !
John Garner taught me history in middle school. At this time he was also the wrestling coach. He showed great dedication to teaching students both within the classroom and in sport. He not only cared for what his students learned about history, but about life lessons. Mr. Garner was one of the most caring and influential teachers I have ever had. He always made class fun and showed that he was there for his students.
I had the privilege of knowing Mr. Garner during his time at Mason Creek Middle School, where I was one of the assistant principals. Mr. Garner was like a jolt of electricity to our school's history program, going far above and beyond the minimum and instead helping to bring history to life for the students. He volunteered his time and effort to provide regular field trip experiences, brought in guest speakers, both live and virtually, and built the school's history club from scratch. In it's first year, the club was named National History Club chapter of the year, in large part because of Mr. Garner's dedication.
Mr. Garner has a bright future ahead of him as an educator and I have no doubt that his infectious enthusiasm will continue to inspire young minds!
I met John Garner several years ago while he was serving as assistant wrestling coach at Newnan High School. I was asked to volunteer at an upcoming youth wrestling tournament. Organizing this type of tournament is no easy task. Coach Garner handled it with ease while also supervising the wrestling team and assigning their duties. After that tournament, I continued to observe him at other wrestling functions. He didn’t demand respect from the team. He earned it. He taught them, supported them, guided them, and set an example
Of what good sportsmanship looks like. The team knew Coach Garner was in their corner on and off the mat. He formed relationships with each individual team member. He knew the struggles they faced at home and at school. He was always there in their corner to lend the hug in victory and defeat. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this award. He is truly a positive life changer.
John Garner has made such an impact on my life. He showed me that no matter what the odds are, victory can be achieved. When I was struggling in multiple classes and messing up at practice, he showed me ways to manage my time and ways to work through the tough times. He goes above and beyond to help his student, colleagues, and family. His childhood stories give me hope that anything is possible. John Garner is a man of strong ethics and genuinely cares for his students' success both academically and in life skills.
Coach John Garner is truly one of the most outstanding teachers our family has ever experienced. Not only does he have an exceptional passion for the history he teaches, but he also recognizes his responsibility to each of his students as individuals with unique intellects, characters, opportunities, weaknesses, and family situations. We are especially grateful to Coach Garner for recognizing that our son would fall through academic cracks in the system without a teacher's intervention. He both supported our son academically and drew him into positive extracurricular and social activities at school. In giving our son those experiences, Coach unwittingly prepared our son for the next unexpected chapter in our life, when we moved to another state. In those first few months at the new school, I was daily thankful for the influence of this teacher on our son as he adjusted better than we expected. In addition, having traveled with an academic team lead by Coach Garner, I know he consistently "goes the extra mile" with phone calls, personal interactions, sincere interest, smiles, laughter, and, of course, an infectious love for what his profession, his community, his world, and the people immediately within his sphere of influence.
Mr. Garner is more than just a teacher. He is a role model and someone that the kids look to for guidance. His passion for teaching shows in everything he does for his kids. He makes kids want to learn and be engaged. My son who has struggled in the past did so much better this year because of Mr. Garner. His communication to the parents was always great, even calling to check on my son if he thought something may be wrong. I am so thankful that my son got to have him as his teacher.
I’ve known John since he was a very young teenager and have watched him grow into an eager and goal minded adult. He has a passion of learning and teaching what he knows. Always pushing himself to be a better example to all those around him. He’s a involved father, husband, teacher and friend . There are not many like him in this world and I am honored to know him .

Coach John Garner was a good influence to his students and his athletes. I was both a student of his and one of his wrestlers through high school. He made a big impact on how well I did in his class and in competition. I wouldn’t have pushed myself as hard as I did if it weren’t for him.
John is an amazing man who taught me a lot from right and wrong as a coach in high school. Coach was someone who pushed you to a breaking point but was right there to pick you up. He knew how to get the best out of you. John wanted you to be the best and he was there to help you every step of the way.
Although, I never had Coach Garner as a teacher and saw him more in his element as a wrestling coach. Mr. Garner was my favorite teacher. He was my history teacher, my track coach and I was apart of the history club that he led. I always looked forward to going on history club trips and to his class. He always made class interesting. He went out of his way to make sure that we learned and understood the material that he was teaching and he always pushed us to be the best that we could be. He is the reason that I love history so much today.
My husband and I have come to know Mr. Garner this school year through the Mason Creek Middle School History Club. This is the first year Mason Creek has had a History Club, which Mr. Garner pioneered and successfully ran throughout the school year, even during the COVID-19 pandemic when schools were forced to go to digital learning. My son has always loved history and Mr. Garner has a way of bringing history alive and engaging the students in a way that allowed them to see history through a lens that helped them understand how important the past is and how it is ingrained in the present. Mr Garner took the time and effort to go out of his way to invest in his students, even on weekends (a huge thank you to his family for supporting him). He organized local field trips to museums, battlefields and historical monuments, encouraging his students to soak up the knowledge and fully appreciate all history has to offer. My husband was able to go an a few of the field trips and was so impressed with how Mr. Garner gave his attention to all the students on the trip and got them energized and excited about history. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr. Garner continued club meetings online, provided information for virtual field trips to some of the most popular historical sites in our nation and continued to get guest speakers for online meetings. Mr. Garner is passionate about history and he loves his students, which is rare to find in the school system today, and it shows in his dedication, perseverance in difficult learning times and eagerness to pave the way for his students to love history as much as he does. Mr. Garner is an inspiration to all students, parents and teachers and I am so very thankful my son had the wonderful opportunity to get to know Mr. Garner and be a member of the Mason Creek Middle School History Club. He truly cares for each and every student and strives to make a difference in their life. I wish he would move to our local high school so my son could have him again!!
Coach Garner influences help my son Yates strive to be the best he could be, helped him accomplish being a freshman varsity wrestler who went on to win county, region, and made it to state his first year ever wrestling. With his guidance and teaching of self discipline Yates was able to bring all his grades up and be up to par as he should be.
On July 1, 2019 my son Yates was killed in a car accident. Mr. Garner being one of the first people to reach out and give us support also held a beautiful memorial for Yates that included the wrestling team that we call family. He never gave up on Yates and not only supported him but us as well. His kindness will never be forgotten and his guidance gave my son some beautiful and exciting moments in his short life that he was So Proud of! We are forever grateful for Mr. Garner- Coach Garner and we are so pleased to hear of this nominee because he is definitely most deserving of the award!
We know John as Coach Garner and what a great coach he is! There are many facets to being a coach; such as, teacher, therapist, cheerleader, mentor and sometimes even cheffuer. Coach Garner does them all extremely well. His ability to connect with and motivate his athletes day in and day out is impressive. Thank you Coach for all the hours you put into making Nick a better young man!!
There are three words that describe Mr. John Garner: Leader, Inspirer, Educator. I knew Mr. Garner for approximately three years while I was a member of the Newnan High School History Club and Newnan High School History Bowl. In this time, I never seen a man so passionate or so thoughtful as John Garner. Mr. Garner sparked my love for history along with the rest of the Newnan High History Department and a year later I was in D.C. with him and the rest of the bowl competing in the National History Bee and Bowl Championship. It was Mr. Garner’s hardwork, dedication, and selfless service to duty that inspired us high-schoolers to put in the effort and discipline required to compete at such a level. John Garner is the type of man to make you say: “wow, I wanna be like him.” He’s a bright sun on a cloudy day, an orifice of knowledge for an open mind, and a strong, compassionate leader. John Garner, is a life changer, and that is why I believe he would be a pristine candidate for this award.
Mr.Garnar is a great person he has impact my son eight grade year so many always, he would always demand the best out of my son.
Mr,Garnar Would not settle for less,
He would always keep me informed about my son academic and his behavior. He really tried his very best to prepare my son for the future and everyday life situations.
Phenomenal teacher .
Mr.Garner was my freshman year civics teacher. I was always happy to step into the classroom. He was an exceptional teacher with an inspiring dedication to history and his students. Now, as a freshman in college, he continues to encourage me in my studies as I am still close with him and his family. I am forever thankful for his kind words and encouragement over the years!
He was one of my best 9th grade teachers and he was a great coach for the History Bowl team
My son was taught by Mr. Garner over a year ago and his name continues in my household. My son was positively impacted by his teachings, his passionate efforts, and his supporting friendship. My son was and has been reminded by Mr. Garner of his capabilities and his worth. My family saw the selfless spirit that Mr. Garner has. He continued to show us his passion for each child’s education time and time again. I had the opportunity to witness Mr. Garner’s leadership capabilities during my son’s freshman year in two different subjects, a field trip, and extra curricular activities at the high school. My son and his other classmates have continued to talk about how much they miss him as their teacher and how they wish they had him all through high school! They all said, his class is tough but he was an awesome teacher and it was worth it. I can’t think of anyone more deserving! Our next generation needs more people like Mr. Garner leading them!
Mr. Garner
A great teacher. When the pandemic began i can definitely say that he keeps our students on the right track. Always have encouraging my son and letting them know not to give up and that they can do it. He makes sure that any student that he knows has potential to do or be great. Mr. Garner brings that out of my chid. He is awesome!
I have worked in education for the last three years and by far you are one of the best educators I’ve met. Thank you for your dedication and commitment to our schools, our teachers and staff, and students! We appreciate your professionalism, compassion, and commitment to your profession.
I've known John for a number of years. My family first met him through the National History Bee. At the time, he was one of the volunteer leaders who was helping coordinate the tournament events in Chicago. Over the years, John has been a source of inspiration and encouragement for both myself and for my son. John's dedication and absolute passion for learning is just incredible. John is an extraordinary person. If a school principal, administrator or head master could write the description of their "perfect" teacher, employee and student mentor----John Garner would meet it and then take it to an entirely new level. He goes above and beyond and puts 200% into everything he takes on. I've watched him mentor hundreds of kids, spark their passions in history and literally, make a huge difference in their lives. It is personal for him. He cares. He is that rare person, teacher and friend that deeply touches those around him. He has and continues to make a difference in their lives and in this world. I highly recommend him. He is more than deserving and I can't say enough great things about John and his work.
Coach Garner always went above and beyond for me. He pushed me to be my best and motivated me every step of the way. He taught me many lessons that I’ll hold onto forever. I’m so thankful I can say he was my teacher :)
Coach John Garner, changed how was I was as a student in high school. Until I had his classes I really didn’t apply myself at all. Coach Garner, pushed me to be the best student I could possibly be. He was the biggest influence I had as a teacher!
Coach Garner is a remarkable teacher and influence on the students at Mason Creek. I have witnessed first hand how he interacts with the students and parents with the time he dedicates to the students as well as his family and peers. Coach Garner takes the time teach and prepare the kids for life challenges by demonstrating integrity, self pride, self determination, hardwork and being a team player. He takes time to plan and take the students on field trips to expose them to new adventures and life skills. I'm in awe of how one person has so much time to dedicate time to others when having a family of his own, while continuing his higher degree of education along with participating in sports and other community wide activities. I appreciate him oh so much and respect him to the highest in regards to the time he has spent with my child and what my son has learned from him. If hadn't known I would have thought he was a solider because of his dedication and loyalty to the school of Mason Creek eventhough he didn't serve he is still a fellow soldier to me. It has been a pleasure and a honor to simply meet him. Anything and anytime he asked I always tried to go out of my way to help in anyway with classroom needs simply because he would go out of his way for the students. Thank you Coach Garner you "Rock". Congratulations on your nomination.
I honestly can’t say enough . Mr Garner goes above and beyond to make sure each child is thriving! My grand daughter has learned so much her 8th grade yr but she also now has pride, goals, self esteem, happiness, confidence, and all because 1 teacher believed in her and showed her not only was she smart but she matters.
Thank you for everything Mr Garner
Mr. Garner is a phenomenal teacher. He is highly knowledgeable in the subject he teaches while making it fun and enjoyable to learn. He goes above and beyond by personally getting to know each and every student and caring for them.
I met John several years ago when we were both attending a teachers' workshop hosted by Ford's Theatre. He is quite charismatic and likable and we became friends. I have observed John as he interacts with his students and confer with him frequently sharing ideas and resources. He certainly has impacted my life and I say with confidence that he impacts everyone with whom he comes in contact.
I met Mr. Garner in a professional capacity, and from my encounters, he always seems more than willing to go above and beyond to ensure the enrichment of himself, his family, his community, and most importantly his students. I first encountered him visiting a special programming series at the Georgia State Capitol, where we discussed ways he could integrate some of our material into his lessons and advised us on how we could be best serving our students. I also discovered we were both a part of an Icivics educator network, where we helped ensure comprehension of civics concepts through action and gamification. His eagerness to make an impact will always stay with me.
John Garner is an outstanding individual. No matter what he does, it is with the utmost integrity, energy and enthusiasm. I admire the way he involves his students in history. John introduces his students to a wide array of people who, because they know John, give their personal time to come to John's classroom to meet with his students.
John's brain is constantly on the move thinking of ways to motivate his students so that they will be life long learners. John's students are not glued to the textbook but are presented with a wide variety of primary sources which allow them to use the inquiry method to learn.
For the rest of his life, John will see former students who will say, "Mr. Garner, I remember when we met______ in your classroom." Or, "I remember when we visited _____ on a fieldtrip in your classroom." Or most importantly, "I remember when I was having problems, but you always took time to help and encourage me."
John Garner was an amazing teacher, inside and outside of the class room. He was always someone I could rely on and talk to when I didn't have anywhere else. He would tell stories of his personal regrets when I would ask and helped me move in the right direction. He's not perfect by any means, I mean have you seen his haircut, but he is a great person inside and out. He forever inspired me with a love a history and passion to do the right thing. He will forever be loved and remembered in my heart.
Wow, where to start Mr.Garner is a teacher that makes it his daily mission to make sure students are excelling, not just in his class but all their classes. His communication skills with parents and students is phenomenal. After school tutoring during lunch tutoring whatever it takes to help students. My son in years past has struggled to do well but thanks to the extra time and effort put in my Mr.Garner he totally excelled this year.
Mr. Garner always made class interesting. He went out of his way to make sure we learned and understood the material he was teaching. He was one of my favorite teachers during school. I always looked forward to going into his classroom!
Coach Garner always goes above and beyond for his students. They aren’t just students to him, especially when they’re on his team, they become his family. Coach Garner brings positive energy anywhere he goes and gives so much for his students. He will always have a great impact on my life!
Since I have known Mr. Garner, he has exhibited a genuine passion and interest in his students and athletes. I had the honor of having Mr. Garner as a track coach in middle school. At every practice and meet, he was there pushing and encouraging us to do our best. He also took the time to help us grow and make our best even better. I was a cheerleader in high school and we practiced next to the wrestlers when their season started. Although Mr. Garner wasn’t coaching me in that particular setting, I could still see his leadership and passion for helping his athletes, just like he showed my team when he coached us. I believe that I can speak for many when I say that Mr. Garner has had a lasting impact on both myself and the communities that he has been a part of.
Mr. Garner always goes above and beyond to make sure his students succeed. I am honored to be one of his former students.
As a teacher, Mr. Garner sparked a thirst for humanitarianism, altruism, and determinism in my son. As a coach, Mr. Garner instilled a sense of confidence in my child that has been matched by only by his courage. As a man, Mr. Garner nurtured the development of personal integrity, commitment to "family first", and a healthy sense of self and adventure. As a result, my son has achieved far more than he believed was possible. He serves our country as a critical care combat nurse (Iraq) and has earned a plethora of accolades, honors, and awards. He runs for charity and invests in the future, creates opportunities for growth, contributes to communities within in his realm of influence, and stands ready for life's next steps. The most life changing aspect of our experience with Mr. Garner has been that his influence did not stop in the classroom, in the gym, or on the playing field. Mr. Garner's influence continues to shine through our son's own mission to live his life in service to others in ways that leave a positive legacy of empowerment for those who stand beside him, walk behind him, and have gone before him. Mr. Garner has never been a mere spectator in anything his hands touch. Regardless of the arena, he is a real player, a partner; indeed, he is a life changer.
John was the US History Teacher who worked across the hall from me for 4 years and we were sponsors of the History Club together at Newnan HS. On a daily basis I would see how John changed the lives of both the students and teachers by injecting energy into their day. From the solid hello and high five to the dynamic classroom activities the students always had a positive outlook on school as well as the day in his classroom. This went beyond the classroom in that John took an active role in many students lives in the athletic realm as well as in their personal lives. Most students from this era at Newnan HS could tell you without a doubt that Mr. Garner was one that they could depend on no matter what the circumstances.
John Garner has affected my life more than he will ever know. My whole life I was a small guy who was picked on and bullied for my small stature. In 8th grade I battled depression and many dark thoughts throughout the year. When I was about to start high school, I expected more of the same. I'll never forget the first conversation I had with Coach Garner. He was my advisor throughout my high school career and the first time I met him his first words to me were, "How much do you weigh?". I told him I was only 99 lbs at the time and he told me that was going to change, and I was going to come wrestle for him. Without Coach Garner's belief and faith in me throughout my years under his tutelage I might still be in that dark place today. He was like another father figure to me and he always believed I could do better than I thought I could. He pushed me to strive for greatness and gave me the family I desperately needed at school to keep me grounded and looking up through life. He knew how to communicate with me like no one else did and I can honestly describe him as a great friend now that I have graduated. he always knew what to say and would try his best to help those in need. I'll never forget winning my final match to go to state and him just running up to me crying as he gave me one of the biggest bear hugs of my life. He has touched so many lives and I believe he deserves the recognition. No one deserves this more than him. I believe whole heartedly in him because he never had anything but faith in me.
I had John Garner as my 8th grade science teacher and wrestling coach and I can genuinely say that this man has left a lifelong impact on my life. Watching the way by which he cares for his students, and family, and the intentions behind his interactions with others has been an inspiration. He goes above and beyond when it comes to getting a job done and is always there to lend a helping hand or to have an open ear. He is one of the most hardworking men I know and takes his role as a teacher and coach very seriously. He is part of the reason I am proud to be who I am today and why i was able to achieve my state title in wrestling in 2018. I have seen his impact, not only in my life, but in the lives of so many of my fellow teammates and classmates alike. I am blessed and honored to call him a friend, mentor, and role model in my life.
Mr. Garner taught my son in his 9th grade year for AP Human Geography. He was very positive and influential in my son's first year of high school; he was challenging, fun, interesting and involved. Mr. Garner wore several hats, including coaching our school's History Bowl Team, taking them to Nationals in Washington, D.C. It's one of my son's favorite experiences, largely a result of the investment made in these students. Mr. Garner has a love of history and learning that is enthusiastic and undeniable; glad to see his nomination as a life changer, it is well deserved.
As a reporter working for the local newspaper, I first met Coach John Garner back in November 2018 when I interviewed him and several members of the history club at Mason Creek Middle School. Upon meeting his students and learning about the history club, I could immediately see the impact he was creating in each student. He spoke of the importance of bringing history alive for students, rather than sitting in a classroom learning from a book. He often spoke of how excited he was when students wanted to take control of their education.
John is passionate about teaching children history, which can be seen through the experiences he plans for his students. From learning flag protocol from a dress Marine to visiting museums, hosting veterans on Veterans Day, and even hosting an original member of the Freedom Riders at the school. Furthermore, he is not afraid to tackle difficult topics and events. I’ll never forget how he explained that history is often “written by the victors”—as well as the struggle we face with preconceived notions.
“We are at a point in time in our humanity and approach to history that we’re reevaluating. It’s our job as educators to provide them with facts, knowledge, and open their minds so they can make their own decisions about the legacy of the country, including the Trail of Tears, the Civil Rights Movement, and more,” he said to me.
John Garner is an amazing teacher who genuinely cares for his students and his interactions with his students reflect that. I admire the commitment he displays to his students and the resulting impact it has on their educational development. It’s teachers like John Garner that make learning fun and worthwhile. The kind of teacher always going the extra mile (or five) to support students and give them all the needed tools for success and growth. That kind of impact is both an immeasurable value and a major influence on the future of the next generation.
Coach Garner isn't just the normal teacher or coach that a typical student has in their life, he is also a mentor of life itself. He has taught me plenty life lessons about moral values, character and proper etiquette that I still use till this day. He's compassionate about every single student that walks in his classroom or on the wrestling mat and I can say he's one of the great mentors that I've had in my life to shape me up to the man I am today. Thank you Coach!
Mr Garner was my sons wrestling coach at Carrollton schools. He was a great teacher and someone the kids looked up to. I feel he really did a great job with the boys there. Helping them to become better teenagers. I know my son was helped by him and we missed him when he changed schools.
I have so many memories with Mr. Garner from when I was in middle school. He was a major influence for me and he encouraged me in so many ways! I will never forget his class or our history club field trips!
I worked very closely with Mr. Garner in the wrestling program at Newnan High School. He was a very strong influence on so many of the young boys and girls during his time there. He worked countless hours mentoring them as well as making sure that they were fed, clothed, and loved. I highly recommend him for this award. He has a tremendous love and dedication for every child that he comes in contact with. Thank you Coach for everything that you have done for all of these kids that you have come in contact with. Congratulations!!
John Garner has a natural charisma that demands attention; students gravitate towards his passion for history and wrestling. Coach Garner does not accept excuses and teaches his students to set achievable goals. John doesn't just motivate students/wrestlers, he also provides them with the support to reach the goals he helps them set. John is selfless in sharing his time whether it be tutoring, coaching, or mentoring. My favorite character attribute of Coach Garner is his ability to make all people feel like they belong. He is a life changer.
Mr. Garner goes above and beyond as a middle school teacher to reach out to parents of his students. Very early in the school year, he personally called me just to tell me about my daughter's high test grade. He continued to reach out throughout the year making sure that parents were always informed and involved!
I am personally a huge fan if Coach Garner. He we one of the best wrestling coaches that I cane across in highschool. Still to this day, I am mighty grateful to of been apart of his team and to have him in my life. He initialized team work with in me, and showed me how important it was to be a member of a team. Not even with just wrestling, he is a brilliant teacher in many aspects. All in all, seeing him have a family. Being a coach and a teacher. Showed me what kind of hard working man that he was and how well of a great family man he is.
Thank you for everything you've taught me ! Love ya coach.
Mr. Garner is one of the most caring teachers I came across in Mason Creek middle school, you can tell he cares about his students and their education. He goes above and beyond for his students, he even stays after school to give them the extra help they need to succeed in his class. Mr. Garner is a great communicator any problems he doesn't mind reaching out to the parents. I wish all the teachers was like Mr. Garner. Communication and teamwork is the key to our students success. I will miss you Mr. Garner sorry for the late night texts and waking up the baby. Have a great, safe and blessed summer. I appreciate you.
How could I ever ask for a better professional to walk through life with my family and Daughter. Through the toughest times and honorable situations Mr. Gardner has been there to help and assist in ways beyond imaginable! He definitely is someone you can count on. Wether it’s a weekday or weekend anytime he was there and my family thanks him with our whole hearts! Keep Pushing Coach we’re watching!
The Cooley Family
Coach Garner as we all know him in Newnan. He was my sons wrestling coach for 4 years in High School and an influence for my daughter who was also a part of the wrestling team. Coach Garner is about education, no doubt, but what you don't see today is an educator also teaching life lessons that can affect you in the future. My son has a learning disability and isnt the easiest to work with especially when a temper flares. Most would throw the towel in and be done with him and he would push Coach Garner to where I thought he had truly lost his hair due to Brandon. Coach Garner impacted Brandon's life so much he had dreams of one day becoming a wrestling coach. He taught Brandon patience and respect. He taught Brandon that you have to work for things you want and its not always easy. Coach Garner led by example.
We were saddened the day we learned he wouldn't be a part of Newnan High School any longer, Newnan wasnt the same, the wrestling team hasn't been the same. How could we be so selfish to keep such a great person all to ourselves. He touched so many of our kids lives here it was only fair to wish him the best and proceed on a journey making a difference in other kids lives as I see writing this he continues to do. I thank him dearly for everything!
Coach Garner was always one of my absolute favorite teachers! He was the type who you knew you could joke around with, but he has a sternness about him that you knew when not to push his buttons, but had a soft side as well when you needed life advice or advice.
John Garner was my wrestling Coach for four years at Newnan High school. As a coach, he helped me develop day by day until I was a varsity starter. He was relentless in his pursuit of assisting both his students and my teammates in becoming a better version of ourselves. I am now at the United States Naval Academy pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering due to the lessons that Coach John Garner has taught me. He has coached me to face my problems head on and to accept both my victories and defeats in a gracious manner.
I have personally witnessed John Garner bring history alive for his students while a teacher at Newnan High School. I have worked with him on multiple projects in our community to help make his students become more engaged with historical events. I have seen how he connects with his students and if a student doesn’t understand something he helps explain it. I have seen how passionate he is about history and making sure we as Americans never forget what happened to bring us to this point as a nation.
John was my wrestling coach my freshman and sophomore year in high school. His dedication to his job and coaching is astonishing and far beyond the average joe. He loves what he does and goes all in. He has really impacted my life in high school and I will always be greatul for him and the time I had the pleasure to call him my coach.
Coach John garner is a outstanding coach, teacher and person. He was a mentor to me throughout my school career and still to this day continues to be a role model In my life. I can call him at any given time and ask him anything and he is there for me. Outstanding person.
Coach Garner is an amazing motivator to kids and adults! When he was my sons wrestling coach he built a camaraderie among the kids and parents that to this day, 7 years later still holds strong. As a parent, this has been heart warming to watch and be a part of. At 20 years old, my son still has much respect and love for Coach Garner and they continue to stay in contact with each other.
I’m not sure Coach Garner even realizes how much of a positive impact he has on other kids around him..... my daughter grew up on the side of the wrestling mat with her brother, Coach Garner and the wrestling team. She was a part of that family as they all treated her as the “baby sister” Coach Garner and the guys encouraged her to follow her dream to wrestle and a few years later, she became the school systems FIRST female wrestler. Even though Coach Garner isn’t at my kids school any more he continues to motivate, encourage and be a huge part of their life. For these things and so much more I definitely think Coach Garner is the perfect nominee for the Life Changer Award.
Mr. John Garner is the acme of a collaborative educator. Despite a full-time teaching load, coaching the school's wrestling team, and being a devoted family man with young children, John is always offering his wisdom and creative energy to support his colleagues and enhance their practice...and his own! He is a top-one-percent teacher, an education thought leader with a national network, and, no doubt, a life changer to every student he encounters.
Coach Garner always supported me and helped me when i struggled in school. He would talk to me when i was having bad days and never gave up on me when i would struggle with the subject. He always worked with me in making sure my school work was done and making sure that i understood the topic to the full extent. He is also the reason for my fascination with WW2 which led to me joining the US Army. Coach Garner is the best teach i ever had and one of the most dedicated ones to his students.
Mr. Garner was a huge influence on me. Not only was he my history teacher 2/3 years of my middle school career, he was also my history club teacher. He was always making learning fun for me and everyone else in the class. Mr. Garner always went above and beyond for his students as far as helping them when they did not understand the material. I have been out of school now for five years and he has been the one teacher that has had a long lasting impression on me. I will forever be grateful I was able to be in his class.
I have been in a class with Coach Garner and I have to say he’s one of the best teachers I knew through all my years of school. He definitely made a life changing impact on my life. He is a great teacher. He holds great control over his class. And he is very stern but that’s one reason I respected him so much. He should receive this award every year because that’s how great he is. And I would personally like to say thank you Coach Garner for everything you have taught me! I hope that I’m half the teacher you are once I finish my college.
Mr. Garner was a teacher of mine back in middle school. He was always positive and passionate about his subject. He also hosted a History club at school, which I was a part of. This organization allowed me and several other 8th grade students at the time meet President Jimmy Carter. It was truly an unforgettable experience and I'll never forget the impact he has made on me.
John Garner was my wrestling coach when I was in 9th and 10th grade . He was a great coach and supporter because he saw me for what I could be not for what I was and help me reach my goals . He taught me to leak by example not by voice and that sticks with me to this day . He’s always been the kind of person that would help anyone in anyway if possible and not ask what’s in it for me .
Mr. Garner played a large role in the life of my teenage son. As a single mom, it meant so much to me that when I realized my son had mad a few poor choices I knew just who to turn to! Mr. Garner could have helped me by coming down hard on my son at wrestling practice, but instead chose to invite him to his classroom for lunch. He then, used positive affirmations and gentle nudging to help my son understand that his mama was right! I will forever be thankful for him being in my son’s life at that time and for his discernment in how to handle the delicate situation. He is absolutely deserving of this reward!
Coach John Garner has changed my life in many ways. Not only because he’s a good role model, but he understands and can see what your going through. He has always tried to make sure that I was giving my best. Whenever I was ever down he was there to check on me, or joke with me and make me laugh and brighten up. As a wrestler he taught me to never give up. He taught me to always go 100% every match. With that being said he would make sure not only on the mat I did my best but off the mat too. He would call anytime of the day or night, to make sure everything is going good personally, and with grades. Overall from coach John Garner I learned hard work, respect for others, Self respect, and to never give up! I’ll very thankful.
I write in support of John Garner. He has been my student, off and on, for ten years, now completing his EdS. He has a huge family and lived through a preemie episode with his last child last year. Loving father and husband. Volunteers for everything related to school, including coaching. Always learning. Tech teacher extraordinaire.
In his young career, he has received many awards saved, typically, for much more tenured faculty. He is so dynamic and seems to be everywhere from professional development to taking kids on field trips on Saturdays. He can't help but be on any short list for honors. He teaches students to organize, to appreciate those who have gone before them by having them talk to Civil Rights Freedom riders, for example.
After teleconferencing with a 9/11 survivor, the students raised money to bring him to their little town in Georgia. They spent the day with him. Mr. Garner helped them organize a town-wide event that night so that the local firemen and policemen could meet him as the students and town honored their own at a picnic. The students did all of the planning, working with the local government, newspaper, caterer, firemen, and they had to keep the books and write thank yous.
History is a live subject in his classroom. So, is character. He is a game changer for his students, his athletes, and we professionals who judge competitions and attend professional meetings with him. I am retiring after 50 years of teaching, 25 of those preparing new teachers. He not only teaches me every day, he brings a smile to my face and joy to my educator heart.
Coach Garner has forever changed my families lives for the better. He came into our lives when my family was struggling. I was in active addiction for over 18 years and was new to recovery. He never judged us, he stuck with us and helped mold my children as well as myself. Not only did he train my children as a coach in sports he allowed me to coach beside him. There were days that knowing I had a purpose kept me sober that day. He not only have my family purpose and treated us with respect he did that with every family and child. He told us about his life and what he had experienced. He is more than a teacher and a coach he is a mentor a inspiration to others to strive to greatness. Coach Garner will forever be a top human in my book
