Captain Ted McMurtrie was nominated by an anonymous parent of a student.
Captain McMurtrie is a great man who has done well with the NJROTC program at Chapel Hill High School. He has been with the program since its inception. So many cadets have passed through the program over the past 10 years, and they grew during their time in the program because of his encouragement and guidance. Captain McMurtrie instills honor, courage, and commitment to the cadets in the program, and he molds them into great adults. His cadets are always willing to do community service around the county, and they are all eager to learn.
At the end of their journey with the program, so many cadets will write letters of thanks and appreciation to Captain McMurtrie because they recognize what he did for them over the years they spent in the program. He has an open door policy for the cadets, and they all know they could come to him for help with school work, personal issues, and guidance for their future. Captain McMurtrie always gives open, honest communication, and he guides cadets down the road to success. He has been known to help students who aren't in the program, as well.
Captain McMurtrie will come into school early and stay late to tutor those who need help in any subject, especially math and science. He takes the cadets on field trips to different military establishments to build teamwork and instill knowledge of U.S. History. Captain McMurtrie also ensures that cadets have the opportunity to participate in drill meets, drone meets, physical fitness events, and much more. He sacrifices family time to be with his cadets before, during, and after school, and even on weekends. Cadets will often come to him for letters of recommendation to colleges across the country, which has led to several scholarships distributed to the cadets.
Captain McMurtrie was the Douglas County High School Teacher of the Year for the 2018-2019 school year and was also a Southwest Advantage Impact teacher finalist in 2019.
"I know from my personal experience that Captain helped mold my daughter into the great Navy Sailor she is today," said his nominator. "Without Captain's guidance and encouragement of life activities, she may not be where she is today, and for that, I am grateful. He's a kind, caring, and smart individual who goes above and beyond the call of duty to ensure all of his students strive to be the best that they can be."
I wholeheartedly agree with this nomination. Captain McMurtrie is dedicated to seeing the cadets succeed. He looks for strengths in those who come through his doors and works to help them be the best people that can be both academically and personally. He goes out of his way to support students even after they graduate. He takes pride in their successes wherever they land. His dedication in early mornings and late afternoons tutoring and mentoring cadets speak to his own strength of character and heart for students. Many thanks for the years he invested in our son. He saw potential in him and worked tirelessly to see him excel.
Captain is a role model, supporter, educator, and has helped develop and encourage hundreds of leaders in his career. He enriched our son’s life immensely!
Captain McMurtrie is an amazing instructor and leader. Everything he has put together in the Chapel Hill NJROTC program was there to help students grow and evaluate their life and help them decide what direction they want to take. He has spent countless hours of his own time to help his students in every way possible. As a parent who went to most of the parent support group meetings and saw first hand the options he was giving to students from military, collegiate, trade school, straight into the workforce was amazing. I know of students that have gone to college with the preparation needed to succeed. I have see him help students with the highest expectations going into the military to get scholarships into West Point and US Naval Academy. But most importantly I watched him try to help all of his students grow and mature into the best citizens they could be, leaving the program with confidence and a plan for what they want to be in life. Over the 6 plus years I have known Captain McMurtrie he has lead by example and shows what it means to be an "Officer and a Gentleman." I am proud to call him friend. #LOCY
Captain has been an important part of my son's education at Chapel Hill High School since entering last year. I appreciate all of the communication with students and parents. He built a family and fostered a community within the program and that's extremely valuable in today's education system. We have been in attendance for two years and I have valued everything. His open door policy for the students, endless volunteer opportunities, opportunities to engage in field experiences has been abundant. He will truly be missed as a valuable asset to Chapel Hill, students, parents and the program. I wish he could stay around for two more years until my son graduates!

Captain McMurtrie is very deserving of this nomination. He has a passion for instilling traits in his students to make them successful in life, not just to pass his class. He works countless hours and almost every weekend pouring into the NJROTC students. My son would not be the Navy Sailor he is without the guidance of Captain. He’s more than a teacher, he’s a mentor and a friend.

You have been an amazing teacher and mentor to them. I’m sad to see you go but happy for this next chapter of your life. You so deserve it! Captain McMurtrie is one of the most generous, gracious, and selfless humans I know. He has inspired so many people young and old. He helped so many kids find purpose and direction in their lives. Captain has given his heart and time to this program and he deserves this award to show all of our appreciation for it.
I will be relieving Captain as the Senior Naval Science Instructor at Chapel Hill High School. I have huge shoes to fill by replacing him there because I have witnessed him in action during their Area Manager’s Inspection. His unit was incredible in every phase of the inspection! Their military bearing during the personnel inspection was second to none! When they briefed the Area Manager, each cadet was well prepared and extremely professional! The performance and pass and review phase was truly amazing and totally impressive! All of these phases were a testament to how well the Captain trained, mentored, and led this unit to a successful inspection! The entire day was fantastic but all the hard work in the previous months was where all the preparation and long hours Captain and his team put forth which made the inspection a success! He is well deserving of the life changer award because he has put his whole heart into helping these young people and the other thousands in prior years he has helped!

I can’t think of a better way to honor Captain McMurtrie for his many years of dedication to his students. He is a man that models the behavior he expects. He is intelligent , caring, compassionate, honorable, loyal, and so much more. I was happy to have my son be a cadet in NJROTC under Captain’s guidance. I told my son many times that Captain is a man to model yourself after. He will be missed at “the Hill” but, I am so happy for his well deserved retirement. I hope he is chosen to receive this recognition.
I can't think of anyone more deserving. Captain helped get the NJROTC program to where it is today at CHHS and has impacted so many many young lives over the years through this program and his general support and encouragement of the cadets in the program. He's a retired Captain so he didn't need the money from this job. He did it because he wanted to encourage young people to become leaders in their school, community, and workplace. He lit a fire of excitement in my daughter from the the beginning when she went to orientation camp her first year in the program and made her believe in herself and her abilities. He encouraged her transformation from a shy, young girl lacking confidence to the courageous, confident leader she is today. On many occasions, we saw Captain pour his own money into the program so the kids weren't limited by the funds raised by parents and kids through fundraisers. He worked all week at the school and spent most weekends chaperoning some competition event (orienteering, drone, academic, athletic, drill, etc.) or educational experience for the cadets. He is definitely a life changer, and we will never forget the impact he had on our daughter.

I've had the pleasure of watching Captain McMurtrie come into our school ten years ago and have seen firsthand the incredible positive influence he has impacted on our campus, faculty and students. There was never a time he was not at school before me or staying after me. Captain has a service heart, a work horse mentality, and an include everyone in the fun type of attitude. Chapel Hill will miss him immensely. I will miss him, too.

Captain McMurtrie is always at our school. I get there early and he is there. I leave late he is there. I go to a football game and he is there...baseball game he is there. He is there supporting not only his ROTC kids but ALL of the kids. He is the epitome of what selfless service looks like.
The Captain is the smartest, hardest working, and most committed man I know. I am proud to have worked with him and consider him an outstanding person.
Captain McMurtrie has been a blessing to me personally throughout all the years that we have worked together at Chapel Hill High School. Captain McMurtrie has helped me tremendously with the projects that Key Club has completed throughout the years. Captain has been an encouragement to me as he and his cadets have worked tirelessly on our community service projects. Captain has gone above and beyond in his work at Chapel Hill High School. He always comes in early and stays late and helps his students as well as teachers alike. He is a man of integrity and his cadets look up to him and admire him for his dedication, skill and expertise that he has displayed throughout the years at Chapel Hill High School. I have been there the entire time that he has been at our school and I can say that his program was a major contributor to the overall success of Key Club. I knew that I could always count on Captain and his cadets to be there to help me with anything that I needed help with. Captain McMurtrie's life and service at Chapel Hill High School needs to be celebrated to the highest degree. He is deserving of the highest award that can be given to a person who has put their heart and soul into their work and into the lives of others. I am happy that he has reached this great milestone in his life but I will miss him tremendously and really hate to think of him not being there next year. I know that he will never be able to count the lives that he has touched and influenced but one thing is for sure, Captain McMurtrie has left his mark at Chapel Hill High School.

Captain McMurtrie is not only an amazing teacher but also an amazing person! I've worked with him for several years and have always been in awe of his dedication to the NJROTC program, his students and our school. Captain Ted McMurtrie is indeed a Lifechanger. For seven years that I’ve been at Chapel Hill High School I have become accustomed to the Captain arriving at school before other teachers and not leaving the school until hours after the last bell has rung. He has devoted school days and weekends to his Cadets as he prepared them for the real world, and many of these students are now members of our military as a result of his efforts. These students are impressive, disciplined, responsible, reliable and respectful to their peers, their teachers, and the administrators at CHHS, as well as being active in our community. They are a reflection of the character of Captain McMurtrie and his genuine dedication to them. Captain McMurtrie and Chief Potter are incredible, inspirational role models to the students they train. Congratulations, Captain, for being Nominated as a Lifechanger to the students you have taught for so many years.
