Carrie Covell was nominated by a colleague who wishes to remain anonymous.

It is often said, "The person who greets you in the morning, sets the tone for the day." Carrie Covell is the example of how it should work. She handles whatever comes her way with grace and a smile

Bowman Continuation School is one of the smallest schools in the Hart District.  Its population, which consists of at risk students in grades 11 and 12, is collected from all over the school district.  The only true common denominator between them is that they need school credits to graduate.

"It is our job to to keep students connected to a system that many feel has left them down, while creating academic scenarios the students feel are attainable," the nominator said. "All 500+ students get individualized academic plans to utilize their unique skills and strengthen their shortcomings. Roughly 70 of these students are enrolled in special education"

Having Ms. Covell as the first face students see in the mornings makes all the difference. Within a few seconds of conversation, she notices who is having a bad day, who is later than usual, and who is in the same clothes they wore yesterday. She directs these students to the staff member who can best assist them. This triage before the start of class helps support students before they have a chance to fall asleep in class, act out or give up.

Ms. Covell's desk faces any student who is waiting to see the principal. The nominator has overheard several quiet conversations where she encourages students to take responsibility for their actions, accept the consequences, and learn from their mistakes.

'Students have shared they were ready to give up and drop out before meeting Ms. Covell," the nominator said. "They changed their minds becuase they feel like she really cares about them. She has been at Bowman for over 15 years, and in this time, she has made a difference in countless lives."

Carrie Covell really cares about the students and staff at Bowman High School. She treats everyone with kindness and compassion and ensures that students who need extra attention or services get support. She helps families feel comfortable attending our school and always has money for bus fare for students who need it. She encourages students to do their best, and is a wonderful listener to those kids who need a compassionate ear. Carrie is intelligent, organized, and an excellent multi-tasker. But her biggest gift is the compassion and commitment she demonstrates daily to "at risk" kids who need to feel a connection to our school so that they can move forward in their lives. Carrie Covell is very deserving of this recognition and makes a profound difference in the lives of students and staff at Bowman High School.
