Music that Describes Guillermo
Guillermo González was nominated by his friend, Indra Arango.
Mr. González was born on April 11, 1973 to Jose and Vicia González in the humble Güinera neighborhood of the Arroyo Naranajo municipality of Havana, Cuba. He has two older brothers and one younger sister. They lived a very simple, but full life.
In 1980, the U.S. opened its doors to all Cubans. His parents didn’t think twice and boarded a shrimp boat (The Ocean Clipper) along with 250 others and began their journey to a better place. The voyage of 90 miles took almost two days due to the number of people aboard the shrimp boat. It was a trip he would never forget.
After landing in Key West, Mr. González and his family made their way up to Miami, where his paternal grandmother lived since 1959. Three months later, his father was able to find a house for rent in Miami Gardens. The family remains in the same neighborhood today.
Living in Miami Gardens was unique in so many ways, mostly because the majority of residents were non-Hispanic. This fact turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Mr. González and his siblings quickly adapted and were speaking English fluently in no time. He made friends quickly and found his way in his new surroundings.
At the age of 12, he started playing baseball, and it quickly became a fixture in his life. Through baseball, he found discipline, structure, and passion. He earned many accolades in high school such as All-County and All-State. These achievements would normally earn a high school athlete a college scholarship, but this was not the case for Mr. González. At this moment, he realized he had two paths to choose from. He could accept defeat and walk away, or he could face adversity and find a way to get to where he wanted to go. He chose the latter.
Knowing that his parents could not afford a college tuition, Mr. González decided to walk-on at Tallahassee Community College. On his 19th birthday, he, his father, and his older brother, Carlos, all drove to Tallahassee for an open tryout. Mr. González shined and was offered a spot on the team, but he still didn't have a scholarship. He accepted the opportunity and assured Coach McCleod he would earn a scholarship. Although he received financial aid, he still had to work full-time while going to school full-time just to be able to pay his rent and have enough for food. His job was to wash and dry his teammates' uniforms after every practice and game. This only made him hungrier and more focused.
After his freshman year, Mr. González posted leading stats in most power categories in the conference. Before his sophomore year, he was offered a full scholarship. Goal achieved. Now what? He knew there was much more to his story and legacy.
His plan was to become a MLB (Major League Baseball) player, but he knew the odds were not in his favor. He knew he would be better off leaving his mark in a different fashion, perhaps with children. Plan B was put in motion. By now, he was becoming a better scholar and had gained valuable academic skills and confidence. The plan was to get as much from baseball as possible, and the rest was up to him.
His sophomore year was off to a great start, and he decided to write letters of interest to ten highly respected and rated universities. One of those was University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Little did Mr. González know that this personal letter would lead to great opportunities for him and others, too. The coach from UNC was intrigued by the letter and drove down to see Mr. González play. That day, Mr. González not only drilled a double off the left field fence and walked, but he also smashed a 425-foot homerun.
After the game, the UNC coach approached Mr. González and offered him a full scholarship. It was like a made-for-television story. Mr. González accepted. Shortly after that, he learned that because of his letter, the coach decided to offer scholarships to junior college players for the first time in his career. Along with Mr. González, four other junior college players were also offered scholarships.
On Mother’s Day of 1996, Mr. González became the first of his family to graduate from college. After graduation, he played professional baseball for two years and earned his Master’s in Bilingual Special Education at the same time. In 1998, he began teaching at Holmes Elementary School in Liberty City. For the next 10 years, he worked at several schools as a special education teacher and department chairperson. During that time, he earned his Educational Specialist's degree in Education Leadership. In 2009, he felt that greater opportunity was elsewhere. Chicago was the destination. He remained in Chicago for seven years. This turned out to be a great decision. During this time, he achieved his goal of becoming an assistant principal, gained a wealth of knowledge that defines who he is today, and most importantly, cemented himself as a great leader.
His time in Chicago wasn't always perfect. There were many lessons along the way, but Mr. González never veered from the goal at hand. Family has always been instrumental and the core in his life. In 2016, he decided to return to Miami to be closer to family and continue his journey. Now, with almost 20 years of experience, he felt as if he was starting all over again. Palm Beach County offered him an interim assistant principal position, and he jumped on it. Even though he had a 75 mile commute each day to and from work, he needed a way in somewhere. The rest was up to him.
Mr. González remained in this position for eight months before deciding to separate himself from the county to focus on attaining a principal position in Dade-County. About halfway through those eight months, something truly remarkable happened to him. It was January 8, 2017. While Mr. González was at a party, he ran into an old friend he dated over 15 years ago. They looked at each other knowing they knew one another, but couldn’t put it together. Finally, they spoke, and as they thought, they knew one another. As they say, “the rest is history.”
Mr. González inadvertently ran into the man who would ultimately become the love of his life, Ariel. This coming together was true destiny. On June 11th, Mr. González accepted his first principalship with BridgePrep Academy. The school year began in August, and on October 28th (his father’s birthday), Mr. González and Ariel got married. He had achieved his greatest professional and personal goals, but there was still much work to do. He thought, “I achieved my goal. I am a principal. Now what?”
Mr. González took over a small charter school of about 175 students in Little Havana. The school was on solid ground, earning a B from the state the previous two years, but it had never been an A+ status school. After the first year of hard lessons, triumphs and disappointments, the school remained a B status school. Mr. González believed it was less about reaching a goal and more about getting better each time out.
The second year begun with a more focused vision and relentless attitude to be the very best. This year was full of firsts for the school. Mr. González initiated a culture and climate that included everyone from custodians to the teachers. He believes in greeting his students, staff and guest every day. He wrote the school creed, and every day, two different students come to the office to recite the creed to the whole school through the PA. Every day, Mr. González will ask those two students for a robust word. The goal is to make sure the students hear 360 words and their meanings by the end of the school year.
Mr. González, also known as Mr. G, recognizes teachers, staff, and students on a monthly basis. He holds Cafecito with Mr. G on the last Friday of every month, affording parents the opportunity to sit down and discuss openly and freely with the school’s leader. He instilled a scholarly environment with teachers via book study groups. For the first time in his life, he took up gardening and created a school garden, where the students learned about vegetables, fruits, and maintaining plants. Ultimately, a podcast was created by the Florida Charter School Alliance to recognize all of the students involved. The best part of it all is that at the end, the students and Mr. G were able to pick what they sowed and eat a phenomenally healthy salad. These are just some of the everyday pieces that Mr. G threads through his school every day.
Through his leadership and guidance, Mr. G deeply respects, admires, and values his team. He calls them his soldiers; without them, nothing can get done. Most importantly, Mr. G values and invests in his teachers and building and maintaining relationships. This attitude and dedication led to BridgePrep Academy InterAmerican earning an A+ status for the first time in the history of the school during the 2018-19 school year.
"Guillermo is not the savviest statistician or most seasoned reading specialist, but he moves people from the core," said Arango. "People believe in him and follow him wherever he is at or goes. This is what it is all about. Twenty-two years in, and he's still going strong and hungrier than ever. He will do this for many years to come. He will continue to lead and guide the future, making it a better place for all."
I have 2 children at Bridgeprep Academy. I will tell you the story of how I met Mr. G for the first time and how strong of an impact he had on our lives. It was August 2017, first day at a new school for us.It was also a very difficult time for our family as my husband was fighting and losing a battle with brain cancer. (He passed away in Oct 2017). I was literally feeling like I was caring the world on my shoulders. First day of school, I was trying to get this huge box of supplies from my car and all of a sudden somebody approached me from the back and told me’Let me get that for you’. I later learned he was Mr. Gonzales, the new principal. That second when another person took a heavy load from my hands made me stop in my tracks, I just stood in the parking lot, watching him walking away with my box and I felt like crying. I felt some of that heaviness on my shoulders lifting away. I never told him this story and he probably doesn’t even remember it. It’s a small thing he did (right?!), not thinking much about it probably, but that made an impact on me. He is warm, caring, strict but loving, funny, always open for suggestions and conversations. My kids thrived in his school’s environment and we all think the world of Mr. G.
Words cannot express how big of a heart Guillermo has. All around genuine human being who always puts others first. The type of individual that breathes in confidence and excellence and exhales fear and doubt. Congratulations on being nominated. You truly are a life changer. I expect nothing less from you and I know the best is yet to come.
Principal Guillermo M. Gonzalez is well-deserving of this nomination as well as the final award. He is a strong example of leadership that his students would do well to emulate in their own lives. He is a compassionate person who takes those extra steps to ensure that his students know they are worthy and well-capable of succeeding in all that they do. The wonderful energy that he brings to his position can be felt as you listen to him talk about his students and his school.
Congratulations Principal Gonzalez on this marvelous nomination.
In my opinion one of the values that best represents Mr. Gonzales its his humbleness. A successful leader is humble. Self-effacing and appreciative, they recognize they can’t do it alone—and they’d never want to. They are thankful in knowing the value of their team and genuinely grateful for the contributions of the people they lead. Their leadership is centered on their recognition that success is shared. It is also important to highlight his intelligence and charisma.

Mr. Gonzalez is in fact a life changer. My brother attends the school that Mr. Gonzalez is in charge of, and if it wasn't for the opportunity that Mr. Gonzalez gave me of volunteering I wouldn't have found what I was truly passionate about. Mr. Gonzalez knows his students, his staff, his students families, and the community. He knows each and every member because he cares. He is always trying to help everyone reach their full potential just because he enjoys seeing everyone in his community successful. He is the boss that everyone wants to have! Any time I needed help with techniques or I had questions on how to improve he would take the time no matter how busy he was to help me figure out a solution or give me advice on how I may improve. He goes to every extent to ensure he is positively impacting his students. He has created gardens in the school and worked along the sides of his students to take care of the gardens all while teaching the students to take care of their community and how to be a team player. He is a leader to look up to. He took a chance on me by giving me the opportunity to not only volunteer at the school but to work at it too. If it wasn't for these opportunities I would not be pursuing my degree in education. Thank you for the life changing opportunities not only in my career but with my community and family.
It is a pleasure and honor to know Mr. Gonzalez! I am very grateful and thankful for his outstanding leadership in this community. My family and I are looking forward to see Mr. Gonzalez receive this award. There are not enough words to describe the impact he has achieved in our students. He has created a loving respectful environment. He is always motivated and excited to accomplish a new goal. It is wonderful seeing a true go getter. He is approachable and by far the best team player as well he has the ability to unify everyone.
You can tell the level of commitment that Guillermo has for each and every member of the community within the first moments of meeting him. He has his students and teachers in mind with every decision and is a great model of a culture-driven leader.
You truly go above and beyond when it comes to your goals as an educator and leader! I am so proud of you and all your hard work, you are nothing short of life changing!
In working with Guillermo, it is clear that he creates and fosters a culture of support and positivity for his staff and community.
Always amazed at your selfless leadership and unwavering commitment to education and to impacting the lives of others. You’re the consummate professional and your passion radiates with every little thing that you do. Stay encouraged and continue to shine as the exceptional leader that you are. You are loved and appreciated by many.
Always amazed at your selfless leadership and unwavering commitment to education and to impacting the lives of others. You are loved and appreciated by many.
Congratulations! Your resolve and commitment to being the best leader you can be, along with having the unmitigated daily discipline to continue improving in what you are most passionate about shows that you are deserving of the recognition. Wish you the best!

Mr. Gonzalez welcomed me on my very first day, during my very first PD with our company, and has been there ever since. He made me feel welcome and quelled all the nerves I had as a first-year Principal. He has had the grace to answer every and all of the questions that I have and has given me advice that has proved to invaluable as I maneuver having my own staff. His school loves him!!!! He is definitely deserving of that love and adoration. He leads with patience, understanding, and compassion. He is the embodiment of a true leader, colleague, and friend.
Mr. Guillermo Gonzalez has many outstanding professional qualities. As his principal over 14 years ago, I found him to be extremely effective when working with the Exceptional Ed. students and staff. He successfully demonstrated leadership abilities and skills. In addition Mr. Gonzalez showed sincere dedication to students and a concern for the improvement of the educational program he worked with.
Congrats Uncle G ! You truly are a live changer, thank you for everything you have done for me & my family (: you are a great person, i know you will win this. we love you very much ! <3
"G", What can I say that hasn't already been said about you? You are the REAL deal. I knew it the day I met you and you offered to help me move my things into my classroom. On an extremely humid Chicago summer day, the assistant principal in shorts and a t-shirt was moving furniture, boxes, and what not, to get the school ready for "his kids". I had no idea who you were or what your role at the school was. All I knew was that a kind soul with a smile from ear to ear was offering me help and was welcoming me to my new school. You showed me that day and every day since, that you are genuine and you truly care, not only about the kids, but about EVERYONE in the school, teachers, custodial staff, clerks, parents. You make every single person you meet and interact with feel important and included. I don't know if you know how rare and precious that is in the world today. I am not at all surprised by this and any future accolades that you receive. You deserve this recognition and much more. I am proud to say that you were my administrator and even more fortunate to say that you are my friend. Keep transforming and touching lives...you were put on this earth for it.
It has been an honor getting to know Mr. Gonzalez these past few years! His passion for the lives of the youth in our community shines bright! Congratulations on all that you have achieved!

Principal Guillermo González or Mr. G as most of his students and parents call him, is a true example of what a great leader is. He makes it a point every morning to go classroom by classroom to greet his students and teachers. His commitment to professionalism and productivity, along with his positive attitude (and sense of humor)make him a role model for his students and staff. Mr. Gonzalez always made himself available at all times whenever anyone needed him. He has a commanding presence yet he has a warm, kind, welcoming manner. He puts his heart and soul into his profession, and it shows. He has high expectations of his students and staff, and is there every step of the way guiding and providing support. He is totally invested in their success! Mr. Gonzalez goes out of his way to help everyone. He is always trying new ideas to empower teachers as well as students. I can go on and on about Mr. G’s virtues. I just want to say that I consider my children blessed to have had such a genuine, inspirational mentor in their elementary school years. Thank you Mr. G for all you’ve done and continue doing with such love and dedication for your students.
Mr. Gonzalez is an amazing principal, son, husband, brother and friend! He wins everyone’s heart with his compassion and support. He truly is passionate for what he does and will make sure to give his best everyday inspiring others along the way. I’m proud of you Mr. G!
As a first-year Principal, Mr. Guillermo Gonzalez has done nothing short of serve as my rock. He encourages me always and makes me feel like a rockstar. He leads his school with absolute dedication and integrity and never shies away from offering support to his students, faculty, and staff as well as friends. He is everything that a leader should be; supportive, compassionate, and impartial. Thank you for all that you do and will continue to do.
Mr. G! A well deserved nomination.
My children have been so fortunate to have you as their Principal.
You put long hours, hard work and dedication to make sure our children’s educational and emotional needs are always met, as well as those of your teachers and staff. You are always seeking new ways to improve our school. You are kind and caring and you pour your heart out for our school. You have certainly fostered tender memories in my girls’ life.

Mr. Guillermo Gonzalez, leads with goals which are transferred into a sequence of visualizations that leads to his implementation. As a leader he has been able to win the hearts of all that work for him. One can not deny his ability and strategies to maintain a group of talented educators who follow his every lead. He is supportive, caring and he makes his team/students know that they are his number one priority. Students know Mr. G as Mr. G knows all of his students! A principal who knows his or her students is a principal that CARES!!
Congrats on so many accomplishments!! You brought so much positivity to Stevenson in Chicago. I am so happy that you are enjoying all your successes in work and life. Much love to you. Come visit us some day! ??

I am honored to be part of his team at BridgePrep Academy IA because he carries the qualities of a life changer and always goes above and beyond for everyone around him and the students at our school. Continue to be YOU and never change!!! Very proud of you G!!!
Congratulations I’m so proud of you ?????? Great JoB
Mr Guillermo González aka Mr.G is one of the most dedicated individuales Ive ever known, when he sets his mind on something he doesnt stop until he accomplishes it..He's been this way his whole life , and it is why he is where he is today..Iam very proud of him and also feel blessed to have him as my younger brother..Keep up the great work Mr.G !!
Great leader who is inspirational in so many ways. When I first joined the organization, he was the first to say hello and offer sound advice while we sat at the gate ready to board a plane to the National Charter School Conference. I have discovered that he has a great sense of humor, he is grounded and he is humble. I believe what makes him great is his emotional intelligence, he communicates effectively and is able to empathize with others. His willingness to share knowledge and resources, but also receive and compliment the work of others, makes him stand out from the crowd of school leaders. We crossed professional paths two years ago on that fateful trip to Austin, Texas, but I will always know Guillermo to be more than a respected colleague, he is my friend.

Congratulations Guillermo! Such a deserved nomination. Who know you is aware of your devotion for the education and wellbeing of our community. You have always struggled for the future of our kids, with such an admirable and perfect combination of professionalism, leadership and heart.
I think of Guillermo and automatically his school comes to mind, which he names in every talk and always with beautiful words, it is an example of commitment and dedication, this shows that when things are done from the heart they make a difference !!
It is with great enthusiasm that I write these comments about Mr Guillermo Gonzalez.
Mr. Gonzalez is a wonderful teacher and outstanding principal. He is a very kind and friendly and also cares for our community
making a difference for many, special the less fortunate around him. Mr Gonzalez has been a real blessing not only for Bridgeprep Academy' its families and the children, but also to the Ministry of St. Matthew's. It is a real blessing to have him as a friend and co-worker. He truly deserve to be the LifeChanger of the Year. I wholeheartedly recommend him.
Congrats Guillermo!. Well deserved recognition. I was extremely moved by the story of your life. This year I had the opportunity to work with an amazing leader and an excellent professional.
example of perseverance and persistence in the face of life's adversities.
Great leader and excellent builder of projects that are evident in your daily work and in your life dedicated to education.
it is a pride to count you among my great affections
Mr. Gonzalez has been an amazing support for me as a school leader. He has always shared, encouraged, and guided me since I started in this position three years ago. Mr. Gonzalez has such a positive attitude and is truly the best example of a school leader. I could not be more proud of him and his hard work. This is such a well deserved honor.
Guillermo is truly deserving of this recognition. I have known him personally and professionally for over 15 years and without a doubt, he is a great person all around.

Oh my! Congratulations wondering what you’ve been up to my friend Mr G. And so happy to hear your life is going well! I miss our chat and laughs. Best of everything!!!
Congratulations G for your amazing work! You are an excellent principal, very passionate in everything you do. You deserve all the best.
Congratulations on a job well done. Your commitment, dedication and hard work are evident in your school's success.
I cannot be happier for you! I always appreciated and enjoyed working for you. Now you’ve been able to do it your way and obviously it works. Congratulations on all of your accomplishments. A friend from Stevenson in Chicago. I’ve missed you. “Who’s our favorite? Who’s our favorite? Mr.G! Mr. G! Mr. G rocks, Mr. G Rocks! He is Awesome, He is awesome!” Melody to Where is Thumbkin. I know you’re singing it right?! ??????
Congratulations Mr. Gonzalez on being nominated for this honor! It is not surprising as your hard work and dedication to your students is evident.
I can confidently say, in addition to receiving accolades for the academic success of your students, perhaps the greatest thing you’ve done for them is to lead by example. You’ve demonstrated that someone who looks just like them, came from a background as they do, love your arroz con habichuelas y ropa vieja like they do and has English as their second language like they do can overcome every obstacle and succeed. That in itself is one of the most empowering and encouraging experiences for any minority student! You teach them to celebrate and be proud of their heritage, the beauty in their ethnicity and their language.
You are a wonderful person in all areas of your life and I am so proud to call you my friend!
Congratulations Mr. Gonzalez you are the best and we love you!
Me G is an A principal. Always empowering his team, and his students. He is friendly and sincere with his comments and always with the aim to help other achieve their goal. You rock Mr G!
I am a witness of Mr. G’s compassion, constant drive, and motivation. Just as the article states “... he moves people from the core.” His hard work and amazing personality can make anyone see that this is all true! We are so proud of you!
Mr.Gonzalez is someone that I look up to and always motivates me to grow to my full potential. I am honored to be part of his team at BridgePrep Academy IA because he carries the qualities of a life changer and always goes above and beyond for everyone around him and the students at our school. Continue to be YOU and never change!!! Very proud of you G!!!
Mr Gonzalez, or Guille as I call him every day, is a very special person in many ways. Professionally, he is the vivid image of that phrase that reads" do what you love, and you will never work a day in your life". That takes love, integrity, and consistency among other things but certainly those are some of the adjectives anyone who knows him well will use to describe Guillermo. His integrity doesn't allow him to deliver anything incomplete, even if it takes some of his weekends, or nights away. This is when I see that he is enjoying his career choice. His consistency is such, that through the years it can be seen as an established routine or goal to achieve, except for diets?? And the love just glues everything together. it is hard to see what aspect of his career he loves the most, if it is the professional growth of his staff, the development of the students, the joy of the parents, of his own growth since he is always curious for more. I haven't had the pleasure to work for him, but I’m sure he is the type of leader that will leave a mark in people's life.
On a personal level I get to see everyday someone who's true essence has never been altered by the surroundings. His values are rich and intact, his approach is always honest and caring, and his commitment is nothing short to a legal contract. I do have the pleasure to know him better in this aspect, and I feel very proud to call him my husband, and I can vow that he has already changed my life.
I am a witness of Mr. G’s compassion, constant drive, and motivation. Just as the article states “... he moves people from the core.” His hard work and amazing personality can make anyone see that this is all true! We are so proud of you!
I have lived together 10 days under the same roof and I have realized that you feel for your school and its members, what a great father feels for his family. If I have to define you in one word, I would say that you are fascinating. !!!!
I have been lucky enough to have worked with and know you since 2007, you’re truly an inspiring colleague and friend. Your mindset is that of others first and with nothing but joy and charisma for every day situations. I am immensely proud of you and your growth. The qualities you have of compassionate strictness is admirable, even being able to visit and see you in Chicago in a different light, facing new challenges with a warm smile. The education system is a step brighter with you in it, changing the course for many students to come.
I met Mr. Gonzalez back in 2003 when my son attended Nautilus Middle School he gave me a call that my son was going to get in trouble little did I know that Mr. Gonzales will change my sons life forever. My son was heading through the wrong path just like his two oldest brothers.
Mr. Gonzalez refused he got my son in his baseball team later in wrestling attended all of his games since his dad was incarcerated most of my sons life, finally my son won medals after medals in wrestling tournament, graduated high school later went to college he’s married to his high school sweetheart and expecting a child in September. I’m almost certain my son would of been dead or in prison if Mr. Gonzalez didn’t intervene and fought for my sons life with so much love , education most of all dedication. He truly deserves the Life Changer of The Year Award !!!!!
I’m lucky enough to call Mr. Gonzalez my ‘panino’, that’s what I’ve called him since I was a baby and couldn’t say ‘padrino’.

Seldom will you find a person with your compassion, drive and dedication in this world. You're an amazing human being, a fantastic leader and I couldn't be prouder of you.
Mr. G is a unique, fun, intelligent and passionate soul. He takes on challenges with determination and with a competitive drive, even if his only competition is his own thoughts and imagination. He places a positive impression on anyone he interacts with and carries joy with him. He changes lives no matter if you’re a student, colleague, friend, family member or a stranger with a fleeting moment to personally interact with him. His positive attitude, calm approach and thoughtful solutions to any problem leave the memory that you will reflect on many times again. He’s loved and loves back unconditionally.
Seldom will this world find a person as compassionate, driven and dedicated as you. Your greatest reward will most definitely be the molding of young lives, watching them grow up to change this world. I couldn't be prouder of your successes and to call you my brother/cousin! Love you G!

Couldn’t be prouder to part of such a wonderful family Mr. Gonzalez has created at Bridgepep.
