Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Clifton Canoy was nominated by his colleague, Jessica Rainey.
LTC Canoy has served as D’iberville High School’s JROTC senior army instructor for the past 20 years. LTC Canoy has not only grown D’iberville’s JROTC program, but he has increased his students' volunteer efforts due to his personal contributions to the community. He is not only devoted to improving his student’s lives, but to teaching and showing them the importance of serving their local community.
Within the past 12 months, LTC Canoy has taken an active part in Coastal Clean-up, the D’iberville Veteran’s Day parade, numerous Color Guard presentations, and The Last Call of Remembrance at the VA Hospital. He was instrumental in organizing D’iberville’s Veteran’s Day breakfast, which is a community outreach program to recognize local veterans and show appreciation for their service.
LTC Canoy leads by example. He is always the first one to arrive at school and the last one to leave. He has devoted his life to the betterment of others. As LTC Canoy retires from the JROTC instructor position this year, he leaves behind an extraordinary imprint on the lives of hundreds of students and the D’iberville Community.
LTC Canoy has been an awesome inspiration, shoulder, and ear in my life! During high School he was a great mentor and leader. Seeing him as an adult, he gets just as excited now as he did then when he asks what’s new in my life. My son has had the opportunity to meet and work with him while volunteering and thinks just as highly of him as I do. It’s literally been a “life time” of support and excitement of accomplishments and figuring out how to navigate failures. Congrats Col!

My heart swells with pride as I think back on all the AWARDS & HONORS my Son Cliff has earned during his careers both in the Military and Academically !
There were so many Family gatherings he missed due to his commitments, but he never complained, it was all part of the duty he felt to the PROFESSIONS he had chosen! GOD, FAMILY, COUNTRY, my Son has chosen well !
LTC Canoy is extremely generous with his time to help support all students. He is a great example of lending a helping hand especially when it’s need. He is greatly appreciated and admired.
I am the leader I am today because of the four years I was able to be mentored and trained up by Colonel Canoy.
To this day, I miss him and constantly remember small things he taught me about leadership.
He pushed me and stretched me.
I love to see him up for such a prestigious award!
