Karly Kanehiro was nominated by an anonymous former student.

"Mrs. Kanehiro is a LifeChanger in my community because of specific reasons," said the student. "She is the presence that encourages me to do well. She cares about her students and their education. Mrs. Kanehiro is outgoing and thoughtful, and always looks forward."

Mrs. Kanehiro is the definition of encouragement. She is someone who can motivate people just by being there. From the perspective of a student, having a substitute would bring down the motivation of others, but if she is there, she is the shepherd that leads the sheep. She is like a mother to all students. She cares for students, but will discipline them on what's wrong or right.

Mrs. Kanehiro cares about her students. She tells students to do their work when they need to do work. She has done outstanding work, such as by taking time out of her day during lunch to help out her students. Mrs. Kanehiro even stays after school to help out her students.

Mrs. Kanehiro goes above and beyond by not only caring for her students, but for those who haven't attended her class. For example, she awards her students for doing their best in work. She also pushes forward by creating activities, such as when she called different teachers and adults to conduct mock job interviews with students. She has brought in people to speak with students about the Japanese internement camps. Additionally, Mrs. Kanehiro mentors students who aren't her own. When they need emotional support, she teaches them about things they should know. If she hears that a student isn't feeling well, she'll email their counselor because she cares about their well being.

"In conclusion, Mrs. Kanehiro is an outstanding teacher," said the student. "If I had to grade her on a rubric from 1 (worst) to 4 (best), I would grade her as a 5 because she goes above and beyond. She even makes extra notes for students who try their best and want to strive for better grades. Overall, she is a LifeChanger to me. She changed the way I think about things in a positive way. If I had time in my classes, I would help and be her teacher assistant. That's how good of a teacher she is, to the point where one of her students would want to help her."

Ms.K is a great teacher. She respects us and tries her hardest to make a safe, fun and enjoyable learning environment. I appreciate everything she has done for both me and my classmates. She is one of the best teachers I’ve had.

In my opinion on how I feel about ms.k is, she is the best teacher I ever had and my reasons for this is because she helps me with not only school work but she teaches us life lessons and advice for the real world. Ms.k is an overall amazing teacher, she makes every student to give there 100% in every work and test she give us, she boosts up everyone's confidence by making positive comments and making everybody's day by just keeping students on task to finish there work. In conclusion this is how I feel about ms.K, she deserves all the hard work and dedication, and I thank her very much for helping me and my brother succeed in 9th grade.

Ms.K is the best teacher anyone can ever ask for. She’s a hard working teacher and she never gives up on her kids. If we was to ever need help she would help us and be by our side alwaysss. I can talk to her about anything that happens at home and it helps a lot because I can vent to someone that can help me a lot. I’m glad that she is our teacher and I wouldn’t want to have any other teachers.

The best teacher, always there for her students, treats her students as if we are her own kids and she is just the best teacher anyone could have.

If I would give this teacher a grade it would be a 10 out of 10. This teacher makes the class fun and makes guided notes so it make it easier to take notes. She also stays back late so kids that are behind in class can keep up. She is a nice teacher who really cares for our grade. AND THE JOKES ARE BLOODY AMAZING.

Aloha, Karly goes above and beyond to make sure her freshmen students passed her social studies class. As she stays late before sundown for tutoring and make up work. That’s an example of her care and concerns for her students. Karly is an awesome advisor for the Anime Club and Artist Alley. She make sure they complete field trip and fundraising forms for our club to perform community service and fundraising for events (Kawaii Kon) Anime Convention. Under High Stress of teaching her class, volunteering with the Cherry Blossum Festival and above all, preparing for her wedding, shows she can handle anything given to her... I wish her the best in life and a new page in her life ...marriage life with her future loving husband ...for life! Stay blessed!

When I first met Ms. K in my opinion she looked like a strict teacher. But when I got to know her as well as the class, it became a really fun and amazing class. This is one of the best class of my freshman year. Im happy I got Ms. K as a teacher. She is an amazing teacher and cares about all of our education and pushes us everyday to do the best we can. She only wants us to succeed and accomplish our goals. If she wasn't the teacher she is today, our class would be completely wack. She is able to make us understand whats needed to be done and try the best she can to be there for all of us. She is also one of the best teachers because she is constantly working. I hope she has another amazing class!

At first, I thought that Mrs. K's class will be a lot harder but it proved me wrong because Mrs. K would guide us and help us with our struggles. She's also an amazing teacher because she's been there for us through our ups and downs and she would do everything to make sure that we stay positive and forgot about worries. She put a lot of effort for us to make sure we get a good grade for her class and we also appreciate of how hard she worked. Mrs. K is like a mother to me because she cares about us and our well being too. Mrs. K, we love you and we miss you too!!

In this class, I was struggling a little bit until you and Mr.Lim helped me out. Both you and Mr.Lim are the best teachers in this team and I'm grateful that you both are here to help me pass your class. Since that I have you and Mr.Lim in this class, I'm passing your class with an A because of the way that you and Mr.Lim helped me throughout this year. Thank You for being a great teacher to me.

Kahana Gamble Posted over a year ago

In 9th grade, I didn't know a lot of people and was very closed off to other people. As time went on she showed that she will always make time to listen to her students if something was going on. Even if she had a lot of things on her plate, she would put it to the side and give the best advice she could possibly give. Whenever we needed help on a project she would stay after school for hours on end so students would be able to finish. She inspired students to push and get things done and I know all of her past students and future students greatly appreciate her for doing so.

Logan Choi Posted over a year ago

As a quiet, relatively shy person, I didn't have much of a place to belong. Then throughout my freshman year I found out that Mrs. Kanehiro, who was also my social studies teacher, was the advisor for the club I wanted to join. From then on she made it easier for me to open up to her and I had a place to be myself. Personally, it was a big help for my confidence. When I transferred schools and I would visit on occasion, Mrs. K always welcomed me back and made it feel like I never left. Mrs. K is one of the most influential people in my life and I can see that she is still helping her students and making them feel as welcome as I did. I wouldn't be who I am without her.

Danny Sugita Posted over a year ago

On the first day of school, I was very nervous since high school was a major step from middle school. I was scared of failing and struggling, then I met Ms. Kanehiro at first we all thought she was too energetic and weird. As time went on we all learned that she was always like that no matter how her day was. While being in her class I learned lots from her whether it was very simple things to things about how you can improve yourself as a person, like how to actually type out a email to a person, how to correctly write an essay with correct grammar and how you can help someone through tough times. She constantly strives to be the best teacher that can make a major impact on her students. As time goes on you realize that Ms. Kanehiro doesn't give up to help her students meaning, she will sacrifice her own time to help a student even if that means she doesn't get to eat her lunch until 4 and she doesn't get to go home until 6. When I was in her class she said " I don't care if i'm sleep deprived and i'm starving but as long as I get to see you guys walk on that stage for graduation, I know that I made a positive impact on you and that is worth more than winning the lottery." This personally showed me that she was very dedicated and very committed to her job and anything she puts her mind too she can and will accomplish it. Lastly, it has also showed me that Ms. Kanehiro will continue to strive until she is the best.

I struggled, not academically, but fitting in and how to be more open. She cared about my well-being and helped me grow into a better person. When I needed help whether it was school work or just in general, she was there to help me and gave me an advice. Whenever I'm down, I always feel welcome in her class, though I wish I wasn't so busy in life so that I can take the time to appreciate her, which is why I'm doing it through here. She has inspired many students and alumni in our school and we'll always be grateful, and I know she will continue to inspire more students as years come by.

Megumi Makino-Kanehiro Posted over a year ago

When I married Karly's brother, I was lucky to gain her as a sister-in-law and friend. Over the years, I have had an opportunity to talk to Karly about her work as a teacher. She is committed to continue to learn as much as she can and improve as an educator, in order to better serve her students. She strives to make history relevant and accessible, even being willing to dress up as Abraham Lincoln, which is slight stretch, given the vast height difference. Karly really commits to her role as an educator and is willing to do whatever it takes to reach her students because she really wants her students to learn and she believes in the potential of each and every student. She is hardworking, tireless, and often returns home late or takes time out on weekends to help coordinate club activities. As an academic advisor, I see the difference that having a caring teacher, having an inspirational teacher, or having an enthusiastic teacher can make in students' academic journeys. Karly Kanehiro manages to somehow be all three and I believe that as a result, she has been able to reach 3 times the number of students with her dedication and genuine desire to make a difference in student's lives.

Ms.k has taken out of her time to help us with anything we need help on and even being here after school if anybody needs help on anything. Ms.K is the best teacher any student can have because she explains everything to the T & she always ask's if we have any question about anything. She always has a smile on her face and she truly cares about us & the thing's we do.

Ms.Kanehiro has helped me grow as not only a student but as a person. She has taught me how important it is to stay true to myself and that I am capable of doing whatever i set my mind to. She has motivated me amongst many students and teens to push through the hard obstacles

Malia Posted over a year ago

I have known Ms. Kanehiro for three years and in that time I have seen changes in my son & attribute his growth to Ms Kanehiro. My son (among other students) spend time in her class after school & she always welcomes them, even sacrificing her own personal time. She has been a constant in my son's life by providing him guidance, offers him advice, & lends an ear whenever he needs someone to talk to. I also have the pleasure of working with her & I see how she interacts with both her students & co-workers. She always has a friendly smile to greet everyone. I appreciate all that she does & I feel we need more teachers like Ms Kanehiro!

Athan Simanu Posted over a year ago

Ms. K was always there for me when I needed it the most, she is one of the most caring teachers and I am very blessed to have her as a teacher. She makes sacrifices like staying in more hours after school then she needs to, and she does not get paid for the extra hours that she puts in. That is how you know she truly cares about our education. Even though a lot of us are hard head she never gives up on making sure we really understand what we are trying to learn. I am very thankful to have Ms. K as a teacher. Much love Ms. K

Izzy Posted over a year ago

She is one of the best teachers I have ever met. She is very sweet, funny, and able to sacrifice for her students to achieve. She is very empathetic to her club as well!

Justin Bergonio Posted over a year ago

Ms. Kanehiro goes above and beyond as a teacher. She creates a classroom culture of belonging and respect by really getting to know her students. She also makes learning come alive. Unlike my history teachers of yesteryear, Ms. Kanehiro continues to emphasize the important themes of history (power, control, perspective, etc) and finds multiple ways to have kids empathize with those of the past. She understands the delicate balance of supporting students of all various backgrounds and skill levels, while at the same time remembering that those supports need to raise them up and prepare them for the rigors that will come their way as they progress through their remaining three years of high school. Although teaching can seem like a thankless job at times, Ms. Kanehiro pushes through with the utmost resolve and purpose: to support and prepare the students of today and help them all grow into empowered and responsible citizens and leaders of tomorrow.

Oscar Spangler Posted over a year ago

I don't know how to start these kind of things lmao. Ms.K is someone who i feel, goes above and beyond, shes an absolute wonderful human being. During my freshman year of high school, she was my 1st period teacher, back then, she had absolutely no idea what to do because it was her first year teaching, but she managed to get through it. During my first year of high school, me and numerous other students would hang out in her classroom during lunch. As I went through my high school years, shes always been there to support me and help me get through high school. Whenever I needed help on something, she was always there to help me. She always stays after school to help students. She doesn't leave school till around 5 to 6. Students always go to her to talk about their personal problems. Shes always there for emotional support for students. A way that Ms.K personally helped me, was during senior year. At the start of senior year, my girlfriend broke up with me and i had no idea what to do, i had nobody to talk to, and nobody to vent to. Ms.K was there to listen to me and help me get over her. She was someone that I could talk to when i needed someone to talk to. I am eternally grateful for everything that she has done for me and for everything that she has done for the numerous students that she takes care of and treats like her own. The world doesn't deserve such an amazing aspiring person like her.

Ethan Hashimoto Posted over a year ago

Ms. K is a teacher that cares for her students and strives to make sure that they succeed more than anything else. As a former student of her class, I can say for certain that she is deserving of the title Life Changer. When Ms.K teaches her class, she treats the class with the same respect that she would expect from her class. She attempts to make class as entertaining as possible for the students so they enjoy each and every class period. Along with this she is willing to take the time to listen to all of her students when they need help or just someone to talk with and she will do whatever she can to help them. She constantly tries and pushes each student to their limits every day she teaches. Aside from teaching class during school. After school, she is a key and essential part her club by constantly being involved within all of the club´s activities. She always tries to attend the community services while trying to supply the club with all of it´s needs without ever expecting something in return. These are just a few reasons why I believe that Ms. K is a person deserving the title of Life Changer.

Cheyenne Manley Posted over a year ago

While I was in High school, I was in the JCHS Anime club that Ms.K advises for. I was an officer for the club for 4 years and her teacher's assistant for 2. While being in the club and working her classroom, Ms.K has taught and mentored to be the adult I am today. She is the person I look up and want to be. She has inspired me to be a teacher within my own classroom. We still talk to each other since my sisters are a part of the same club I was. She brightens my day when I am feeling down and puts her students first. She doesn't just do these things for me but she inspires and cares for all her students. Those that are currently in her classes and those that have graduated. She deserves this award because she is a lit candle in this hectic world. Thank you Ms.k.

Mylee Manley Posted over a year ago

Mrs. K is my club adviser. I have known her since middle school when my sister, the previous club president would bring me because she had nobody to watch her little sisters. I have always known her as a really nice adult that was easy to get along with and would make sure that we are safe and didn't do anything that is not so smart. Now that I am part of this club, I realize that her demeanor has not changed to any of her students. She watches over everyone and deals with what ever is thrown at her. She is especially worried about our well beings. I found this out when I had broken my ankle during a club activity. She made sure to walk me to my father's car and made sure that I had gone to the doctors to get my foot checked out. Mrs. K is the kind of adult I strive to be like when I grow up.

Ms.K is really one of the greatest teacher I've ever met. I was literally blessed to have her as a teacher for a whole year and was able to become a student in her class. I felt like meeting her was God bringing another mother figure into my life, someone I could rely on when I struggle the most at school. I've been through so much troubles and have seen others go through the toughest times in their lives and the first person everyone would go to would be Ms.K. She's not only our teacher or a club administrator she became our friend, our mother. Even if I'm not in her class anymore she still takes her times to ask if we're doing okay and if she's having a rough day she still finds a way to help us in our studies. She has sacrificed so much for us, more than people know and she deserves to be recognized of all the things she has done for us. She has given so much advice to me and got me through the ridiculous heartaches I've went through in high school. I love you so so so much more than you know! Like keep being you Ms.K <3

Despite not being in her class, I personally perceive Ms K to be the most caring, hard-working, coolest, and loving (plus SO MUCH MORE) teacher. She goes beyond that of a teacher and has become a ‘second mother figure’ to not only myself, but for all people that step foot into her class. She has become a symbol of hope for me and she represents the good in the world. She has helped me grow personally in so many ways and every moment with her is something to cherish. Thank you for everything, Ms K ??

Ms. Kanehiro is a great teacher. She isn`t like every other teacher who just gives you a textbook, paper, and say, "Take notes on page 300 to 321." Instead she gives us important information through a powerpoint with guided notes. Even if her students are missing work from a few weeks ago, she still try to encourage them to do the work that is needed. She stays after school for people who needs to do work, even if they don`t come. In other words she works way harder than a lot of teachers. I have more positive and great things to say, but it is too much to say.

Hinayana Utu Posted over a year ago

Ms. Kanehiro is like a second mom not to just me but to all her students and to her anime club students as well. Even when Ms. K is busy she still takes time to make sure that we are ok both mentally and physically. Ms. K has had a very inspirational motivational impact on me on where I want to become a teacher just like her because I have seen all her former students come back and thank her for being such a wonderful teacher and I looked up and thought to myself “wow I want to be just like that, have a impact on my students that they come back and thank me.” Ms. K is really like my second mother because since I barely had my own mother around Ms. K has taking me under her wing and has treated me like I was her own child since I was a freshman. I am very thankful for having Ms. K in my life and guiding me through my whole high school. Ms. K really be a real one and deserves more than just a recognition, words can’t describe on how much Ms. K has had huge impact on every student she had and including myself.

Ms.k should be nominated because she is a very hard working teacher and cares very much about her students and loves to be a very interactive teacher. She treats here students like her own and gives them all a opportunity to share their thoughts on life and on school. she will not give up on her students and will stay hour and hours after school to give her students the education they need in her class. She is very thoughtful of peoples decisions and life and that is the main reasons on why Ms.k should be nominated to teacher of the year.

As a Campbell High School parent, I can’t express how much I’ve appreciated the effort and hard work Ms. Karly Kaneshiro puts forth as an educator. A simple text message to remind of an upcoming project, or to let me know how well my son is doing in class or even just a positive note about something funny he did to brighten someone’s day. She doesn’t just serve her students, she supports us parents by reminding us that even in our busy lives, we’re still raising good humans and we’re all in this together. Sometimes, it’s just nice for parents to hear that. She is an amazing educator and I hope that as time goes by she never loses her love and passion for teaching because her hard work truly shines through her students. Congratulations on your nomination and good luck Ms. Karly. It is very well deserved.

I worked beside Karly in 2019 for a full semester. I witnessed first hand the positive impact she has on all her students. She is a very dedicated teacher who stays late after the school day to be there for anyone who may need extra help. Karly’s former students come visit her regularly all the way up to graduation for advice and assistance with whatever academic or life needs they have. The students respect and cherish her guidance as well as her ability to listen and comfort. I could not think of a better or more deserving candidate for “life changer” than Karly Kanehiro!

Mrs. Kanehiro is a wonderful teacher who truly cares about her student. My son is a special needs student and Mr.s Kahehiro makes sure that I have the necessary tools and information to follow up and keep him on track. It's difficult for my son to navigate high school, especially immersion classes, and I credit JCHS for making the necessary accommodation so that my son fits in. Having said that, I think Mrs. Kenehiro deserves extra mention because she takes that extra step up to coordinate with me to make sure my son does his work and turn them in on time. I am not surprised that she's nominated for this award because I know my son is in good hands! Thank you Mrs. Kanehiro - I hope you win!

She has always been there when I need questions on things I'm unsure of and have a hard time with the work, Ms. Kanehiro is such a wonderful teacher I'm extremely grateful to have her as my US History teacher. Always strives for us to do our best in the class, its an amazing safe space and learning enviorment I'm excited to come to school everyday at 2nd period since shes such a wonderful teacher with an amazing personality. Always working hard everyday until she leaves the school at 5 PM to make sure we get the help and work we need to pass her class, I wouldn't make it out of my stress if it wasn't for her. I'm excited for more to come in the next few years, I came into Campbell scared and anxious but the club she runs with another teacher helped me be more happier and secure that I have a group of people on my back when problems get worse over time throughout high school and an amazing teacher to support me along the way. I'm just so happy to have an amazing teacher for my 1st year that supports us students to succeed.

There are so many teachers who have changed my life but Ms. K was the first teacher who I can see as more than just a regular teacher and adviser. She is like my second mom; my best friend. If there were anything I would want to let out and let go, she would be the first teacher I would go to. She listened to hundreds upon hundreds stories - sad, happy, sappy - told by her students and I wonder if she realizes how much she means to us and how much we appreciate what she does for us. Most importantly, she and the rest of the bombastic inhabitants of the Anime Club taught me how to live a little. I have never shown my true, humorous and colorful personality until I met these guys. Thank you, Miss K, for teaching me how to truly express myself.

Unlike many other students in the JCHS Anime Club, I don't know Ms. Kanehiro that well. But in the short time that I've known her, I can almost certainly say that she is a life changer. Ms. Kanehiro (aka Ms. K or "Mom" as we call her) has run the Anime Club for more years than I know of, but I've only recently joined the club a couple of months ago. I joined because I wanted a place to hang out after school. With time, this club has not only become a hangout spot but also a second home. It's a second home for a lot of the other students too, especially those that barely have a first home. Some kids here have abusive parents or a family that won't accept them for their sexuality. Ms. K takes in all of them—gay kids, weird kids, socially awkward kids, kids who are way too obsessed with cosplay, etc. and gives them a place to stay in the wonderful safe haven of D-102. If they don't get enough love from friends or family, she'll hug them. If they're sad or upset, she'll take the time to talk to them outside and make sure they're okay. If they're hungry, she'll even make sure they get good. Even if it started as a nickname, she truly is a mom to all of us in anime club. She's a quirky, dorky, anime-obsessed nerd of a teacher with a shock of lipstick, dark hair and twenty-odd kids who love her.

Ms. K is absolutely one of the most important people in my life. She has helped me through a lot of troubles i go through in my life like me depression and anxiety. She listens to me like very few people do and always says the right things. She lets me hide in her classroom when I want to hide from ROTC. Even though she can get annoyed easily by her students and is really busy most of the time she is still one of the best people to confide in. She has helped me a lot these past few years and i am very grateful to know her and to know that I am always welcome in her classroom. She calls me her "Do i need to talk to your councilor" child. Even though it's meant to be a joke it always warms my heart to know that she has my best interest and mental in mind. When things get bad or i need to talk she is always there when i need her. She has changed my life for the better and i don't know how i would survive through high school without her. she is one of the few adults i know that actually listen to me and don't call me Olivia. she has seen my best and my worst and i always strive to make her proud. She is like another mother to me because she care very deeply, she helps me though my depression and when i feel like i just want to give up. I love her very deeply and care for her with all my heart!

Mrs. Kanehiro was my very first teacher at James Campbell and I was a part of her very first class. She helped us grow as people and is my favorite teacher that I've ever had in my school years. She helped us at every opportunity and was always there to listen to our problems in and out of the classroom. Mrs. Kanehiro is one of the few teachers that I feel, is able to connect with her students on a personal level, she does whatever she can to help her students succeed and be prepared for the next part of their life.

Mrs. Kanehiro is.. indescribable. She has so many good positive qualities about her. She can get real, like really real. You never really feel uncomfortable around her, because she's so open, and she understands what we're going through. Even if we are talking about something so dumb or unrelated to school, she will still be around to listen to your drama. She seriously cares about us students, and will do so much for us. Although she won't chase her kids down to do their work, she will try her best to get them to finish strong, and pass the class. Although Mrs. Kanehiro isn't my teacher, I still enjoy coming to her class afterschool for anime club. Because quite frankly, she is the BEST anime teacher and is so invested in the anime club. It's awesome to see how energized and happy all the anime club is, and it's all because of Mrs. Kanehiro

Miss Karly Kanehiro is a great teacher even though I never had her as my teacher. She is honest and passionate about her work and very true to her feelings and beliefs. I am extremely thankful that she is my club advisor and wish her a good luck and a good life.

Although I did not have Mrs. Kanehiro as a teacher, she has still done plenty for me as a club advisor. She has her classroom open for not only students but for club members too. It's probably the only place I like hanging out at because I can be myself without worrying too much about people judging me. She lets us vent to her and she really listens. I really appreciate everything she's done for me and the club.
