Music that Describes Diane

Diane Barton was nominated by her friend, Anne-Marie Bobay.

Ms. Barton is a Fort Wayne native who received her Bachelor’s in music education from Ball State and her Master’s in education from Indiana Wesleyan. She has one sister and cares for her 93-year old mother at home.

Ms. Barton was named as one of the top four educators in 2016 by the Northwest Allen Country Schools. This was based upon nominations from parents, students and staff. Then, a committee evaluates the nominations and chooses the teachers or counselors to be honored.

Some of her proudest professional accomplishments are being named the Sweetwater Sound Teacher of the Year, and the Northwest Allen County Schools Teacher of the Year twice. She has also been awarded the Keegan Award from Arts United of Allen County. Ms. Barton is pleased to mentor new teachers and serve as a leader teacher for student teachers, many of whom are now teaching colleagues. Most of all, she enjoys bringing the joy of music making to her students!

Ms. Barton is also on the Executive Committee of FAME (Foundation for Art and Music in Education) and is a Past President of the organization. The mission of FAME is to foster and perpetuate creativity through multicultural arts education:

“We believe in the value and power of the arts to kindle the imagination, encourage creative thinking and enhance human development.”

FAME’s Vision statement is:

  • Empower teachers to nurture artistic creativity;
  • Celebrate the artist in every child and develop pathways to explore the arts;
  • Understand and appreciate diverse cultures through experiences with indigenous art forms

"I spent my high school years in band, orchestra and choir with Diane," said Bobay. "She was an outstanding musician and leader in all aspects of the music department. Diane has spent her teaching career continuing that passion for music by paying it forward and sharing this important creative learning experience with children in the Fort Wayne community."

Ms. Barton was a music teacher for my older siblings and myself at Perry Hill Elementary and I was thrilled to see that she was still teaching when my daughter began school at Hickory Center and then again when my son also began at Hickory Center. My sister, myself and my daughter all went on to participate in middle school choir and show choir in high school. I wouldn't be surprised if my son follows in these steps as well. Ms. Barton made music fun and exciting at a young age and led my family to have a lifelong love of, and appreciation for, music. I am grateful for the commitment and love she has for our students!

My son benefited greatly from the years he had Ms. Barton as a music instructor at Perry Hill Elementary. He remained active in marching, jazz & show choir band (where in the latter, he met his future wife). Ms. Barton's love of music is infectious and she has been a treasure to many children and to NWACS for years. A well deserved nomination. - Carolyn

My son is in Diane's class. He tells me constantly how much he enjoys her class and is happy to have her as his music teacher. I don't know a lot about her, personally, but I will say that the love and respect the entire Hickory Center school has for her is palpable.

Mrs. Barton has taught the love of music to all three of the Armstrong children. Sam, Jordan and Payton. Jordan is now in the middle school jazz band and Payton wants to learn the trumpet! Thanks for being a great teacher!

Diane, Thank you for all you do! Whether it is working on a music program, band performance, play, music classes, choir classes (new this year because you have so much time on your hand;), FAME festival, and so much more (especially taking the time to coordinate caroling for a sick dear friend and printing 100 programs)...we love you and can’t thank you enough for all your effort and joy you put into your music! And whatever you do it is always with a smile! So proud to call you my kid’s music teacher. You are the reason they are still in band! We Love you! The Pack Family
