Roxanne Hernandez was nominated by Stephanie Rosch, a parent of one of her students, Brennan.
According to Ms. Rosch, Brennan struggled with school in Kindergarten. Every morning would be a battle to get him to school without tears and frustrations, making it impossible to keep from worrying about her son and how his day was going. The battle was constant; he wouldn’t attend to tasks in class, and there was little to no differentiation for his specialized needs.
The 2016-17 year has been night and day, according to Ms. Rosch. Enter the fabulous Roxanne Hernandez. Ms. Hernandez has included Brennan in many different ways in the classroom. She uses multiple learning methods, gives him time to come to circle, lets him choose to enter the circle with the class to where now he comes every day, and uses restorative practices that truly make Brennan feel a part of the class and a valued learner.
Ms. Hernandez has let Brennan come into the classroom before school to help acclimate to the day. The transitions have been wonderful; he helps put down chairs for the day, puts things away if needed, and has truly taken an interest in his school. Ms. Hernandez has come up with many creative solutions for any problem that arises. When Brennan struggles with speaking, she gives him a microphone. When Brennan struggles with writing, she lets him talk it through and then scribes for him.
"Ms. Hernandez has truly gone the extra mile every time I turn around to help my student learn." Rosch said. "This is the first year I can say that Brennan has received proficient scores on his assignments. This is the first year we’ve had little to no crying before school. Ms. Hernandez truly exemplifies our motto 'where learning is personal' going above and beyond every day to help Brennan be his best learner he can be."

My younger boy had issues going into kindergarten he would throe tantrums and didnt want to be there. She knew this going in when he was on her roster for the year and she made it so he enjoyed going! She helped him gain his strengths in school like my older son. She takes the time to actually get to know her students and help them grow. She recognizes their strengths amd plays on those to help them gain the confidence to tackle their academic struggles and struggles in their daily lives. I have come to know Ms. Hernandez as the School Resource Officer at Metz Elementary and I have been nothing but impressed with her! Every single moment she's with her kids, she's engaged in a teaching moment without feeling like one!
I had recently visited her classroom to just stop by to say 'Hi' and turned it into not just an introduction to the new students she had in class (most kids remembered me from last year), but turned it into a syllable lesson and a safety teaching!

I reached out to Metz and they immediately took him in. He changed because the way he was being treated changed. I had the pleasure of working with Roxanne Hernandez and it was WONDERFUL! She started everyday with a smile and a hello to everyone. She was kind to kids EVERY SINGLE day. I saw her with Brennan and her love was over flowing. I also saw Roxanne with another challenging kid that she would walk beside everyday for EVERY tranisition in order for that student to be successful in the hall. Roxanne does not teach for the money of the recognition of others, she teaches because this is her God given talent and she knows her gift is needed for her students.

Roxanne is a very strong determined person who never gives up. She carries that determination to her students as well as their parents, But never setting the bar too high so that it discourages rather than building. Along with regular classroom teaching ( which a lot of her techniques are not standard due to the backgrounds of her students ) she goes beyond just teaching reading writing and arithmetic. She instills life lessons both personal and community. She is dedicated not only to changing lives of students but also the life of her school and school's community. She has done fundraising for the school, she helps with the homeless shelter in her schools community. She's reaches out to the community to get involved with the school . She is totally dedicated to her students year around. Roxanne is a person who is super passionate about her work and education in general.
I've known Roxanne for over 20 years and I'm not surprised at the comments from parents and colleagues. She is creative in solving problems, empathetic to the individual, and always striving to learn more herself. Having come from a family of educators, I know these are all qualities of a great teacher.

Roxanne Hernandez is an amazing teacher, and friend, who shows character, poise and patience. And a deep passion for her profession.
Roxanne is passionate in her love for helping people and changing lives, in and out of the classroom.
Roxanne is a life-changing teacher because she cares about her kids and works very hard to make them successful. In her first year in the classroom at Metz she was given the "swing" kids (not the smart kids who for sure would move up nor the kids who for sure would be held back, but the kids who the teacher they had would make the difference). Many of these kids had significant issues (details omitted to protect identities). At least 2/3 of those kids moved up. This defines a life-changer, & Roxanne continues to make that same impact on her students everyday, not to mention the additional work she does in fund-raising to benefit the school, district and community.

Roxanne is the most amazing teacher I have ever come across! Not only does she teach her students subjects like Math and English but she teaches her students how to love themselves. I am a parent of a special needs child where transitions are extremely difficult. I have known Roxanne for many years. It brings my heart and soul great joy to know that she has made a child's life change with her efforts. Teaching in this day and age is very challenging for many reasons that are not known to the public. It's takes a special individual to recognize a child's needs and be able to assist them successfully in their environment. Kudos and many blessings to Ms. Hernandez!
