Tracey Getson was nominated by her colleague, Jennifer Tirado.
Mrs. Getson has been touching the lives of students for the last ten years at Everglades Elementary School. She is an extremely creative teacher who has an extraordinary passion for kids!
Mrs. Getson integrates social studies standards and AVID strategies into her literacy block. Students regularly participate in project-based learning. Students take focused notes, create one pagers, and write their own higher order questions.
Mrs. Getson often dresses up in character during her social studies lessons to engage students in the content. Recently, she dressed up as Betsy Ross, and students engaged in a variety of Colonial Times games and activities. She engages students in book clubs and deep book conversations. She inspires kids to love to read!
Mrs. Getson makes meaningful connections with her students. Her classroom environment is positive and upbeat. She and her students created a Class Constitution of expectations, and they meet daily for “Family Meetings." The students at Everglades look forward to having her as a teacher, and her former students come back to visit her. Students often reach out to her about books they have read together or connections they make to things they learned about. She truly makes a difference in their lives!
Mrs. Getson continues to have a growth mindset as a teacher. She attended the AVID Summer Institute School-wide Writing Across Content Areas last summer and brought back great ideas to share with the fifth grade team and the AVID Site Team.
Mrs. Getson serves as teacher leader for Green School Initiatives. She meets monthly with the Green Teacher Committee to support the initiatives that make Everglades Elementary a "Green School of Excellence." She also has a garden club of fifth grade students who meet regularly to take care of the hydroponic garden. This year, Mrs. Getson also organized the Leaders of Tomorrow program, where fifth grade students support kindergarten through second grade teachers and students in the classroom.
Mrs. Getson is definitely a LifeChanger!
