Music that Describes Courtney
Courtney Rodriguez Sales was nominated by Bloom Academy Board member, Sarah Ibrahim.
Mrs. Sales is highly qualified, passionate, driven, and results-oriented. She is a fellow of Building Excellent Schools (BES). BES is a national nonprofit organization committed to improving the academic achievement of underserved students in the nation’s urban centers. BES accomplishes this by training leaders to take on the work of establishing high-achieving, college preparatory charter schools.
It is extremely difficult to become a BES fellow. In fact, BES receives over 2,000 inquiries for ten to twelve fellowships per year. The criteria to become a BES fellow is incredibly selective. BES requires the fellow to be a leader who believes that all children can learn. It requires each fellow to be extremely intelligent, which enables fellows to not only have the intelligence to create a high-achieving school, but the ability to execute a lasting, high-achieving charter school. BES only selects leaders who will do whatever it takes to get the job done. BES looks for natural-born leaders who will use every minute possible to close the achievement gap. The BES application has high standards and requires extensive essays, an education background, stellar recommendations, and strong professional accomplishments. Then, applicants must face multiple rounds of interviews. In addition, candidates evaluate classroom instruction and are asked to do multiple written data analysis. BES only selects 1-3 percent of its applicants a year. After meeting Ms. Sales, it is clear why BES selected her as a fellow. She is a natural-born leader with amazing grit and the intellectual capacity and compassion necessary to build a high performing school in Houston, Texas.
Ms. Sales is a graduate of Pennsylvania State University and Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University. She is a licensed attorney and a certified educator. She was on the Dean’s List for six semesters at Pennsylvania State University. In law school, she was a Child and Family Advocacy Fellow, which is a highly competitive program that offers tuition remission for graduates who commit to careers in public service work for families with children. After her undergraduate education, Ms. Sales became a Teach For America Corps Member. Teach For America has an acceptance rate of less than 11-15 percent. Teach For America is highly selective and only chooses the best applicants. She spent two years at PS 385 The Performance School in the Bronx, New York. As a product of the Bronx, Ms. Sales was inspired to give back to the community that raised her. She planned rigorous literacy and math curricula. She led classes to average over two years of reading growth in one school year. The New York City Teacher Data Reports listed her as achieving a high achievement level in English and above-average achievement level in Math. Her ability as a high-performing educator is proven.
After her time as a teacher, Ms. Sales decided to attend law school. During law school, she received multiple awards including the National Action Network “Woman of Excellence” Award, the Sari M. Friedman Endowed Family Law Honors Scholarship, and the Stephanie E. Kupferman Juvenile Justice Endowed Scholarship. In law school, her commitment to education remained as evidenced by her multiple presentations:
- Hunter College, New York, NY & Bronx Community College, Bronx, NY: “So You Want to Go to Law School: What Students of Color Should Know About Law School”;
- Hofstra Law School, Hempstead, NY: “Saving the Nation’s Expendable Children: A Proposed Moratorium on Student Suspensions”;
- P.S. 385 The Performance School, Bronx, NY, “College Bound Scholars: How to Change School Culture and Engage Students.
In addition, she published a nationwide paper on “Amending State Education Laws to Encourage Keeping Students in Schools.” Her commitment to education is indisputable and strong. She also helped establish Hofstra Law’s first Juvenile Justice Clinic and was the managing editor of the Family Court Review Journal. Her academic service during law school focused on youth, including volunteering for the Nassau County Youth Court and the Youth Advocacy Center.
As a legal intern, Ms. Sales demonstrated her commitment to public service. She spent a summer as a Court Appointed Special Advocate in the Brooklyn Family Courts. She spent the following summer at The Legal Aid Society in Staten Island Family Court and managed both juvenile delinquency and child protective cases. Ms. Sales also interned with the New York Civil Liberties Union to develop a strategic plan to address high levels of suspension and expulsions in schools in Nassau County. After becoming a licensed Pennsylvania Attorney in October 2013, Ms. Sales joined the Allegheny County Office of the Public Defender in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She represented indigent adult clients and was quickly promoted to the Juvenile Division, where she represented children at all phases of the Juvenile Court process.
Then, she decided to move her professional focus solely on education. She spent two years as a Project Manager in the Department of Professional Development at the Pittsburgh Board of Education. She was responsible for managing cross-functional teams and implemented a number of plans and programs. During that time, she also was a member of three community service organizations, including Big Brothers Big Sisters, Attorney Advisor at Barack Obama Academy of International Studies, and a member of the Youth Court Initiative of Western Pennsylvania. She also received the Barack Obama Academy of Internal Studies “Community Partner Award.”
Ms. Sales is clearly a leader with a strong background in education. She has demonstrated her abilities since her time in college and throughout her entire professional career. Her knowledge of education spans from inside the classroom to professional development and even juvenile justice. This broad range of knowledge made Ms. Sales superbly qualified to be Superintendent of Bloom Academy Charter School. She wouldn't have received all the accolades, certifications, and fellowships if it weren't for her passion and commitment to education. She believes all children should learn, and all children have the capacity to do so with the proper support. Ms. Sales has done whatever is necessary to create a high achieving, lasting charter school in Houston.
As a BES Fellow, Ms. Sales went through a year-long, comprehensive, rigorous training program in urban charter school creation and leadership. She traveled to schools around the nation studying high-performing schools. She spent this time creating the footwork for Bloom Academy. Ms. Sales has been continuously selected by high performing education organizations such as Teach For America and BES. Both programs have highly selective recruitment, and the Board agrees that Ms. Sales is a strong Superintendent.
"As a Board, we took the time to study her background and have had many conversations about her commitment to creating a high-performing charter school. It is evident that she demonstrates the intellectual capacity and tenacity to be the our superintendent," said Ibrahim. "As a Board, we believe that Courtney is a LifeChanger...Since Bloom Academy Charter School has opened, Courtney has proven that she has the ability to not only make a beneficial difference in the lives of students, but to permanently impact their quality of life. Parents have raved about Courtney and the loving but demanding learning environment she cultivates at Bloom. Teachers have stated that she is a great leader and an amazing teacher developer. Lastly, we as a Board, know that Courtney will make a life-changing impact for her students, parents and the community."
It is hard to describe someone that has given you so much in so little time. Courtney Sales is passionate, driven and team oriented. I have known her for under a year yet she has given me a boost in so many aspects of my life. Helping me to become an effective leader for those around me, giving me the opportunity to change the lives of the children in this community, and she shown a true interest in the things going on within my personal life. I do not know a better person that has done more for those around her then Mrs. Sales. She is true gift to those that know her!
Ms. Sales is an amazing leader and Lifechanger!
Courtney is simply awesome! I am a family friend from Chicago. I grew up in the Chicago public school system so I understand the value and importance of teachers. Without some Very Special Teachers, Educators and Counselors, I would have never made it out of the inner city. I am older than Courtney, but I admire HER! She is a future leader, NO, make that a Current Leader and she deserves to be recognized and honored. I am so impressed by what she has accomplished and given the proper platform she will accomplish even more.
Ms Sales is an extraordinary soul. Her drive for excellence encourages the best in everyone that she encounters.
Mrs. Sales is a beautiful energy that loves children in a way that will help them thrive under her leadership. Her charter school structure is a portal for learning that will lay a foundation to greatness in our children. I AM Grateful to have met her and to allow her to shower my son with Love, insight, knowledge, trust and understanding.
Ms. Sales is a firm believer in the adage service is the rent we pay for living. She is a dedicated professional and community member who unapologetically believes when given access to the appropriate resources and tools, every child has the right, and the capacity to perform at his or her highest level.
She uses the full measure of her personal experiences, high standards of excellence, grit, achievement, and keen sense of justice and equality to serve others. In all her endeavors, her goal to instill a sense of hope, higher purpose and achievement in those she serves.
It is no surprise when Ms. Sales did not see a school congruent with her vision for academic excellence, she created Bloom Academy. Using the full measure of her talent, heart and passion, she is empowering each child and his or her family with the strong understanding, a high quality education is their right.
In her rigorous approach to education and leadership, Ms. Sales not only plants the seeds of success in her young students, she ignites the light of high achieving scholars. She is also creating a strong foundation for productive community members and empowered life changers of tomorrow. Ms. Sales is a wise, passionate, compassionate, life changer to many. Her love for both the work she is doing and the children she serves is the definition of a life changer. She is very deserving of this award

Ms. Sales is the type of person that we should all aspire to be like, even if just a little bit.
Courtney was my coworker when I first started teaching. Although she was just starting off as well, she exuded this confidence in everything she did that was magical. Her easygoing yet serious rapport with her students stood out for me as well. I am not surprised that she is doing great things!
Mrs. Sales is the definition of hard work. Everything that Mrs. Sales has ever told me she was going to make happen she has made happen. From becoming a teacher, to being a lawyer, to becoming the fearless Leader of Bloom Academy. The determination I have seen from this one individual that I am so lucky to call my friend has been unparalleled. For Bloom Academy to succeed and flourish funding is necessary whatever is given to this establishment would be used to help children from all walks of life get the education they need enforced by Mrs Sales encouragement to change our world.

Courtney is the epitome of selfless. She is the most caring, giving & understanding person anyone will ever meet. She is going to leave a HUGE impact on this world, her students & will continue to change lives forever.
Courtney is a phenomenal educator and has made many positive impacts on numerous students in New York, Pennsylvania, and now Texas. The morals and education that Courtney and her team are instilling in the students at Bloom Charter Academy will carry them through academically for a lifetime. The best thing about her though is that she truly loves all of her students and each one of them hold a special place in her heart. No one is more deserving of recognition for their hard work than her.
I have watched this amazing educator in action with the Bloom Academy students, parents and staff. She has set high expectations and I have no doubt that all members of the school community will bloom under her leadership.
Mrs. Sales grew up in a era of knowing what hard work is, and working smart was second nature. She sacrificed her summers as a child, investing in herself academically, and never gave up. Making history is the only path towards a natural born leader who will implant seeds into the youth of today into future flowers of tomorrow. The garden of youth has been founded by Mrs. Sales, and its a resemblance of what shes started those summer days of sacrifice.life changer isnt something she disciplined herself to be. It's a lifestyle and she is just that inside and outside her duties.Im eager to see her shine onto the future leaders, and watch them BLOOM!
As a parent of the children that she empowers everyday, I have to say Mrs Sales is a phenomenal educator, leader, and an amazing role model! Everyday, she shows dedication and passion for what she does for the children in her community. She is the true embodiment of a lifechanger!
Courtney is the definition of a life changer. She has always been passionate about making a difference in the lives of children even before I met her in law school. She has a natural caring spirit that is obvious from the moment you meet her. For anyone else opening a school would be a daunting task. But Courtney knew the risks, she knew the obstacles that lied ahead but put everything she had into it because the outcome would be well worth it. She loves the children in her school as if they are her own. She makes them feel seen and heard and her impact on their lives is priceless.
Wow you are also the founder of Bloom Academy! This is amazing, we need more leaders like you.
Ms Rodriguez is someone who really cares about the youth. She helps so much in many different ways just to get kids the proper education they need. I’ve never met anyone so dedicated and passionate about what they do. She deserves everything she wants and needs to make bloom academy the best school it can be.

We are so proud of your accomplishments. Keep on fighting the good fight.
Courtney Sales is a person that gives nothing but the best of herself in support of the community. Whether her time as a defense attorney or her forming Bloom Academy in defense of a child's education and growth, Courtney moves with heart and conscience to amplify the achievements of the lives she touches.
Courtney is and always will be a great leader and role model for her peers, she has been a life long educator throughout the urban community and dedicated her life to helping those in need to succeed. She will do whatever it takes to break down barriers so that bloom will continue to thrive to the top. She brings so much joy to her staff and student body.
Pretty Girl.
You have ALWAYS been amazing! You never accepted that you couldn't do what you wanted to do; that tenacity has taken you everywhere you decided to go, and even into places and spaces that weren't on your radar. To say that you are a role model does not give justice to your total greatness! Many people accomplish a multiplicity of things in their lives but do not dedicate themselves to ensuring that others, especially our children, are afforded the opportunity to do the same. Your life's work, YOU, should be the norm, not the exception!
In the immortal words of the great Maya Angelou, you are a PHENOMENAL WOMAN, and when I grow up, I want to be just like you!

No one is more deserving of LifeChanger of the Year than Courtney Rodriguez Sales! Since she could talk she always expressed that she would make a difference in the world. Courtney's passion for hard work and dedication to children is evident in all that she does. Excellence is what she expects from herself and instills in others. My daughter has blossomed into the phenomenal woman she promised herself she would become!
I’ve known Courtney for over 20 years and her passion for positively impacting children is unrivaled. We miss her in NY but know she is doing what’s best for children in Houston.
Courtney is one of the most ambitious, caring, and thoughtful individuals I've ever had the pleasure to meet. We initially connected in law school over our passion for justice and quality education for all children, and our friendship bloomed with our shared sense of humor. I have rooted for Courtney on every step she has taken on this journey and continually find myself in awe of how much she has poured her heart and soul into this school. She's an absolute rock star of a leader, a friend, and a human being.
