Music that Describes Steve

Steve Alexander was nominated by his district's director of secondary education, Dana Fernandez-Flores.

Mr. Alexander is a difference maker and a LifeChanger! He dedicates every minute of every day to ensure his scholars have every opportunity to be successful within his school and beyond. To accomplish this, he builds strong, authentic, lasting relationships. He talks straight to his students, setting high expectations while displaying compassion and empathy.

Mr. Alexander intuitively knows the needs of his students and has championed many important school initiatives to support them. Some examples of his leadership include: individual plans of study, internships, increasing CTE pathways from 9 to 26, student-led parent teacher conferences, increasing enrollment in dual credit college classes (over 700 duplicated students completed over 2150 hours last year), expanding AP class offerings from 4 to 8, social-emotional learning, digital citizenship, and expanding the master schedule to allow students to take one additional class each semester and provide 40 minutes each day for academic support and social-emotional lessons.

Mr. Alexander is also a rock for his colleagues when they're dealing with tough situations with their students. He's always ready to listen to the adults and assist in finding solutions to challenging student situations. His ability to see multiple perspectives promotes a positive, student-centered climate and deepens the connections between faculty and students.

Mr. Alexander is a trusted counselor for SHS staff. Over the years, numerous faculty members have gone to him to share their personal situations of joy and grief. The staff trusts that Mr. Alexander will listen closely and not judge them when confiding in him. His compassion for his colleagues is evident by the close relationships and bonds of friendship that he experiences with so many members of the staff. His caring, compassionate nature is exemplified on a daily basis, year in and year out. His laugh, without a doubt, is contagious and guaranteed to bring a smile to someone’s face.

As the Seaman High School girl’s basketball coach, Mr. Alexander not only motivates his players to become better athletes, but he inspires them to be better people. He leads by example, and the players truly feel like part of a family where he is always going to be there for them and care about them unconditionally.  Over the course of his coaching career, he has impacted many lives and continues to do so, not only in his coaching position, but his counseling position, as well.

"Steve makes Seaman High School a wonderful place and has changed the lives of many students and teachers for the better. He is one of the main reasons our school is #SeamanStrong," said Fernandez-Flores. "Everyone at our school knows that Steve truly cares about them and wants the absolute best for them and our school community. It is for these reasons that we believe Steve Alexander is a LifeChanger."

Mr. Alexander is so deserving of this award. Four years ago we were new to the Seaman District and even though he was not my son’s primary counselor he was happy to help us when trying to decide where to start with classes. I also had a wonderful experience with him when we were hosting an exchange student from Italy. We met with him and he helped her figure out what would be the best classes for her! He went above and beyond to help her have the best experience possible! The world needs more educators like Mr. Alexander.

Alex is a wonderful counselor and human being. He does a wonderful job of working with students, staff, and administration. He is the glue that keeps SHS stuck together. The amount of time, energy, and effort he puts in to developing the master schedule of classes is amazing. He makes sure students are able to get into the classes that they need and takes into consideration teachers needs as well. He brightens my day when I see him and I believe he is a LifeChanger.

Mr. Alexander makes sure to know everyone's name even if he is not their counselor. He always makes it a point to ask how you are doing if you see him in this hallway or walk by his room. He is relaxed in stressful situations and always ready to help when you need it. There is no more deserving than Mr. Alexander!

Mr. Alexander has helped my daughter Naomi several times since we started here her sophomore year. She speaks very highly of him and says she goes to him instead of her own councilor because he was free and no one ,else was when we first started when she had a problem and that started a bond between them and she trust him not that her councilor is not a good one. He has helped her figure out where to go and what to do to get to be where she needs to to end up where she wants to be by graduation day.

Steve is our hero when my son was coming to seaman during the middle of his high school career. We knew Steve from before so I was grateful that he was our counselor. He helped in so many ways that I can’t list them all. He always made suggestions for the better whether changing courses, to options when he was ill etc. There needs to be more counselors exactly like Steve!

Mr. Alexander wasn’t my designated school counselor during high school but I went to him because he was always caring and was the person I would tell everything. I trusted him with things I couldn’t even tell my parents. He was my biggest cheerleader and my shoulder to cry on. He made a huge impact on the person I am today and I thank him for all he did for me!
