Marshell Norris was nominated by her colleague, Tomi Rues.
"Mrs. Norris is one of the most devoted, caring, generous, unselfish educators I have had the privilege of working with," said Rues. "She is a rock star! She is most definitely a LifeChanger in our community."
Mrs. Norris meets each and every student where they are. From the first day of school, she sets the intention of truly making a difference in her students' lives. She wants her students to grow, and she becomes their greatest cheerleader. Mrs. Norris loves reading and goes above and beyond to foster a love of reading in her students. Again, she meets each student where they are.
She wholeheartedly creates a positive school atmosphere! Whether she is spearheading the school homecoming float or raising money at the football tailgating dinner, she is always contributing to her school. Her classroom is full of positive quotes, displays showcasing the students, and book club projects. She is always working on a display or project to create a positive atmosphere. She even put posters up in the bathroom!
When it comes to leadership, Mrs. Norris can't help but step up and help! It's her nature. She helps with student council, spirit week, box tops competitions, etc. She is always leading and giving.
Without being asked to, Mrs. Norris went back to school to get her Masters in Instructional Reading. She was commuting to her full-time teaching position, working hard as a single parent to two children, and getting her Masters all at the same time. She knew she wanted to be a Title 1 specialist someday. However, she didn't know how quickly a position would become available. When asked if she wanted it, she declined because her work in the classroom wasn't done yet.
When you're around Mrs. Norris, you can feel her nurturing demeanor, whether you're in her classroom or just in her presence. She truly wants what is best for everyone. She also cares enough to show up really early to school. Her commute is at least 30 minutes, but she cares enough to show up and be ready for the day.
Finally, Mrs. Norris is aware that teaching is much more than just the curriculum. She is always teaching students about morality and ethics. She is preparing them for middle school and beyond. Mrs. Norris shows up and does the right thing by being an example to her students.
"Mrs. Norris is humble and well-deserving of this award," said Rues.
