This wonderful human happens to be my aunt. My parents tell me every now and then the story, about her coming everyday day at 5 am in the morning to see me (I was a baby). After that she would go to work. She has always been there for me, even though she was most of my life away from me (I lived most of my life in Honduras). At a distance she gave me advice, she scolded me when I needed it ;) and always motivated me to work hard and to reach my goals. Everyone who knows her can say that this woman works her *beep* off. Her life story is proof of that. She is a living example for anyone that ever wanted to achieve anything. She told me not long ago that she was nominated for "Life Changer of the Year" and I was not surprised. My aunt deserve this prize for what she does and how she does it. Even though I never took part in any of her classes, I know she inspired and motivated all those kids. I know this because she has inspired me, because she still does and because she did it while live countries away from me. She did it through her actions, and through all the good memories she left in Honduras. (Te quiero Tia)

I was blessed to have Mrs. Alvarez as a substitute teacher back when she was still studying for her degree and licensure. She was amazing then as a teacher and amazing now as a dear friend. Miriam has such a big heart. I know Miriam from Maryville College. We had the same Spanish classes together. She was one of the most hard working, studious, selfless persons when others needed help in their studies. She has a passion for helping others and has an eye for perfection in anything she does. In classes and out of classes, Miriam was a great friend and pier to all others around her. One large part of Maryville college's attractions is that everyone knows everyone on campus and it's a school community of support. Miriam was always in the library studying with others and even when she wasn't she would go out of her way to say hello to many who walked by her to see if they were having a good day. After 4 years at Maryville (and 4 years graduating later), Miriam still keeps up with me and my family to see how things are going. She has such a big heart. I looked up to her 8 years ago and still admire her friendship!

Miriam is my personal " superhero". I am the Director of the Early Childhood Program in Sevier County Schools TN, and have become a great supporter of Ms. Alvarez. After our fire in Gatlinburg and Sevier County, Miriam stepped up and helped me establish a pre k program at PBP Elementary School and actually went door to door with the principal to make sure the hispanic children knew of the program and how to get each parent to register their children, get them vaccinated, get physicals, and even find a place to live. She is there for us at each meeting checking on students, parents, and teachers to make sure all children have the same quality of life and know they are loved, cared for, and provided hot meals by our school system and especially PBP Elementary School.
I am so indepted to Ms Alvarez for our continous support and action as a "true super hero" for kids of all nationalities and levels of income. She is always upbeat, happy, and knows every child and parent by their first name and makes sure that if they need help that she goes beyond what anyone would do to help us all. Please consider her for the recognition. I am truly blessed to know and work with an angel that God has given me as my earthly super hero.

Being bilingual it's one of her many gifts. She translates for parents and students who does not know how to speak English. We have so much fun in Mrs. Alvarez's class. It is fun to work with her and for her in class. We don't feel it like it's work. All the kids love to work because she makes her class so diverse everyday. Miriam Alvarez Is an all-around life changer I had the opportunity to work with her twice and see the amount of passion and care she puts into her work. I work at a residential outdoor learning center and Miram worked tirelessly to make sure the English language learners were comfortable at Tremont. to provide a way to communicate with their families why it's important they be allowed to participate. she also Translated some of our activities to make sure her students and future students would be able to have a more impactful experience. She is truly committed to helping all her students be successful and was a lot of fun to work with.
Miriam Alvarez was an outstanding student at Walters State and Maryville College. She excelled in her academic studies while maintaining the additional responsibilities as a mother, spouse and part-time employee. She also participated in student organizations, like Phi Theta Kappa, and others, and often achieved highest awards of merit. Miriam loves teaching and she has an overwhelming ability to connect with students and help them maximize their talents and abilities. I observed evidence of these qualities in her son and the students at Pigeon Forge High School on a number of occasions.

Mrs. Alvarez is the hardest working teacher with which I have ever had the privilege of working. She puts her students’ needs first at the expense of her own time and energy. Her high standards carry over not only to her students but also their parents. I cannot imagine any teacher being more deserving, and I taught 38 years with very fine people, but Mrs. Alvarez stands above them all.
Several years ago, Miriam spent a little time at our school before she began her college courses and she was a big help to me several times. Miriam helped me communicate with several sets of parents in regard to a difficult start for Kindergarten students. I remember doing car door duty after school and she waited with me until the parents pulled up and we were able to ask to talk with them for a moment. Miriam did not hesitate and helped me to get some important points across to those parents that afternoon.
I never forgot how she was so helpful to our school then.

Miriam Alvarez is a perfect example of the American dream the countless immigrants have pursued for generations. She came here with very little, learned English, raised an awesome son, went to college to became a teacher, and is now a pillar of her community, helping others to follow in her footsteps. None of it was easy and the sailing has never been smooth, but she is persistent and passionate and doesn't let anyone or anything hold her down. Miriam serves as the Family and Community Engagement Chairperson for our Title 1 school. She's only held the position officially for two years, but has played a huge role in connecting our Spanish families to our school long before she even became a teacher. For those families, she is a bridge of help, understanding, and compassion to connect them with both school and community resources. Countless students and families owe at least a portion of their success in school and our community to Miriam's selfless dedication. She is a true servant leader, who's dedication to all of our students extends well beyond the school day. You can find her translating documents at 6 a.m. and texting parents to check on sick kids at 11 p.m. She is a truly remarkable Life Changer and her touch will be felt on our community for generations to come.
I had the privilege to meet Miriam several years ago when she was a substitute teacher and volunteered at Pi Beta Phi Elementary School. Over the years I got to know this special lady who has worked so hard and many long hours to further her education while teaching and volunteering to help others. She’s had several struggles along the way but she has only motivated others and showed that anything is possible if you do the work. She is always willing to help others. I’m blessed to call her my friend.

Miriam changes lives everyday at our school. She plays a key role in the well-being of all of our non-English speaking students. Miriam bridges the communication gap between our students and staff, and she is a tremendous problem solver for all of us. Miriam is a bridge between her ELL students' families and outdoor experiential education opportunities. Her tireless dedication to provide equitable opportunities of growth and access to resources is clear whenever she brings students on overnight trips to the Great Smoky Mountains. Whether it's translating guides or acting as interpreter for worried families at home, she seems to have endless energy to ensure her students and their communities feel safe and welcome in all environments. She's also a hilarious, powerful force of nature who is a role model to ALL members of our community.
I work at a non-profit organization, each year I work with thousands of students and hundreds of teachers from around the country. Miriam is a one of the most caring, passionate, and hilarious teachers. She volunteered her time to translate a lengthy teaching material for our students. She improved our ability to engage english language learners. I know that she does so much more for her community. She has changed our students lives. Very deserving of this award.
I had a wonderful experience with Miriam and the Pi Beta Phi students while they were at Tremont Institute (an overnight environmental education center). Miriam went above and beyond to ensure the parents were comfortable sending their kids to Tremont (for some students their first multiple night away from parent experience). I believe some of these kids would not have attended if Miriam hadn't worked so diligently with parents to make the parents feel comfortable. Miriam kept a positive attitude the entire time, made us laugh, and ensured that all students felt included in the activities often switching between Spanish and English while hiking. In my opinion, she enhanced the experience and changed the course of many lives by supporting positive social bonds between all students and adults.
Miriam is so special! She always has a smile that just brightens the room. Her passion our students and community is amazing. I am so proud to call her my friend!

Ms. Alvarez is one of the best teachers I’ve had. She has always worked hard to teach her students with integrity and has always been there to motivate and inspire individuals such as myself. She is what I consider to be a transformational leader. One of the many examples of her performance is that she helped me begin my journey to learn Spanish. There was plenty of times where she would have to stop and help me through a pronunciation to help me understand how to form the vowels. She pushed me to go beyond what I needed to by pushing me to learn more. Her dedication has helped me through my classes in college. I was lucky to have her as a teacher, and I hope that when I have future students; I’ll be able to serve and motivate them as she did.

Miram’s belief in the transformative power of education is evident in her life. I first came to know her when she was a substitute teacher where I teach. At that time, she was pursuing her own education and working with the ELL population in our schools as a volunteer. As she worked to improve her life, she was gaining a reputation as someone who was serious about the kids’ education. The more I got to know her, I learned that she was overcoming tremendous hurdles to pursue her education.
When she earned her degree and credentials, she proved to herself, women, and immigrants that fighting against tough odds may not be fair, but it doesn’t mean you give up. Mariam Alverez is one of the most hard working and selfless persons I have ever worked with . I had the pleasure of working with with her at Sevierville Intermediate School . She would do whatever she could , whenever she could ,to be of assistance to others. This was in addition to teaching her own class.
She was constantly called from the office and nurse ( and others) to help interpret . I was always amazed at her positive attitude and willingness to help.
Many days she was at school late because of the million interruptions she had throughout the day.
